That s what SWABC is all about The Best Fishing Club in NJ The regular meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of the month, at 8:00P.M. The only meeting that is not held at the Legion Hall on Tuesday will be the night of the Past President Dinner. That month is March. A $5 fee is required, for non-members, this entitles them to the 50/50 drawing, refreshments, snacks, and some new tricks about fishing. Welcome all; we hope you enjoy the evening.

2 President s Corner Election time is here for our 2014 Board members. At our October meeting, I read the names of our Board members and the positions they presently occupy. These are elected positions and club members can run for any of these offices. At our November meeting, I will again read the Board positions and I will take names of any member who wants to run for them. The list of these positions and the members who are in them are listed in this newsletter. If you are interested in running for any of these positions and have questions about them, please see me at our November meeting or call me at (201) In our December newsletter, the names of our candidates running to be on our Board for 2014 will be published. At the December meeting, a vote will be taken on the slate of club members who want to be on the Board of officers running our club for December 17 th Meeting This is our Christmas meeting and no speakers are scheduled since we want to do just a little club business and then have a good time with our fishing friends and enjoy eating a lot of goodies and forgetting about any diets! Our club is ordering a nice tray of appetizers that include: prosciutto, salami, mozzarella, provolone, roasted peppers, grilled eggplant, artichokes and olives. Garlic bread and a tray of chicken Parmigiana are also ordered. Members can also bring their favorite food items. For example, Rich Bunger is bringing the chili he likes to make. Our members always bring a lot of food and we eat very well, and that is what we are supposed to do during the holidays! You can call John Piazza at (201) or Barry Paull at (201) and tell them what you are bringing so that we do not have duplicated food items. We will have an exchange of gifts and Santa Claus will hand them out. If you want to participate in the exchange of gifts, please bring an item (preferably a fishing-related one) that is approximately $10 in value. January 21 st Meeting We will start off the New Year with a very interesting speaker from the Division of Fish & Wildlife who is an expert on our state s fish hatcheries and stocking methods. Ron Jacobsen will give us a power point presentation on our state s program to enhance our state s fisheries. Many of us don t know it, but a lot of non-residents come to fish in our state because of the good fresh water fishing we have and a lot of this has to do with the stocking program that Ron will be talking about. This presentation is not about saltwater fishing, but you will find this presentation on fresh water fishing very interesting. Our club tries to have varied and interesting speakers and Ron will not disappoint us since he has a lot of experience in this field to share with us. October 15 th Meeting Speaker Captain John Kolias We had Captain John Kolias (Reel Fun Fishing) as our speaker to talk about catching striped bass and his talk covered how to catch them by live lining with eels, chunking and other techniques to improve our fishing skills to catch more of them. He also covered the best techniques how to properly handle striped bass that are caught so that they are put back into the water and survive. All too often, anglers unintentionally kill bass by not handling them properly and we have to protect this fishery that so much of us enjoy. Thank You Captain John! November 19 th Meeting Speaker Chris Lido Editor Fisherman Magazine Prior to this meeting and starting at 7:30 p.m., Captain John Piazza will be hosting a knot tying demonstration for blackfish and he will also talk about his techniques in catching them. John is very good at catching blackfish and this is a good opportunity for club members to get prepared for the upcoming blackfish season on November 16 th, when the blackfish limit will rise to 6 keepers. We will have Chris Lido as our guest speaker and he will talk about his techniques to catch a variety of fish and demonstrate the various knots he uses to catch them. Chris is a very avid fisherman and his columns are throughout the Fisherman magazine that many of us have a subscription with. Chris will have a lot of fishing tips and fishing stories to tell us. Chris may also be accompanied by John DeBona, the Fishermans Advertising Manager, and John handles our raffle during our Past Presidents Dinner. Also at this meeting, we will have our traditional turkey and ham raffle so that you can prepare for Thanksgiving by winning a nice turkey or ham. Our club will have cards on hand and you can simply write your name in a numbered box for a $1 dollar chance. At the end of the meeting, we will draw a number for each card and if you have the winning number you get to take home a turkey or a ham to start the holiday. It s that simple! If you pay your 2014 dues at this meeting, you will also receive a numbered ticket. At the end of the meeting, we will have a special raffle just for those anglers who pay their 2014 dues. The prize is a turkey or a ham! So pay your 2014 dues at the meeting and get another chance to win a nice prize! At our December meeting, we will have a final vote on these positions. Reluctant Anglers Drafted in War on Fish at the Yellow Stone National Park In a bid to restore native Cutthroat Trout, Yellow National Officials have ordered fly-casters to kill rainbow trout. Rainbow trout have been swimming in the Yellowstone over 100 years since the early park administrators introduced them to enhance fish offerings. But officials are now worried that the rainbow trout is pushing out a native fish, a cutthroat trout named after the distinctive blood-red slashes along its jaw-line. To restore the cutthroats, the park this year started requiring visitors (from a government mandate) to kill all trout where they exist in the Lamar tributary. Every year, Yellowstone draws 40,000 anglers and this is big business with hotels etc. More importantly, anglers have a problem killing fish so that the park looks like it did 100 years ago. This issue still needs resolution. (From the Wall Street Journal 10/19/13). Upcoming Events for 2014 Fishing Shows: Garden State Outdoor Sportsmen s Show NJ Convention Center (Raritan Expo) 97 Sunfield Avenue, Edison, NJ ( January 9 th January 12th The first show is the Garden State Outdoor Sportsmen Show (Raritan Expo) and it will have a huge variety of fishing and hunting gear along with many delicious food items for sale. 5 SWABC 3 rd Annual Fluke Tournament August 9, 2014 Our Fluke Committee members met on October 30 th to discuss strategies to increase participation in our club s 3 rd Annual Fluke tournament to make it a success. In 2013, It is our goal for 2014 to surpass this number & get at the minimum at least 100 boats in Fluke Tournament! Discussion included how to better get the news out to the public about our tournament. One of the ways we want to do it is to have our fluke tournament applications available at the upcoming 2014 fishing shows and at other venues. What we need from our members at this time is your help to provide us with sponsorships for this tournament and they DO NOT have to be fishing related. For example, our club has a checking account at First Valley National Bank and we are going to ask them to be a tournament sponsor. Sponsorships can come from restaurants, banks, bars, Sports fitness clubs or any type of business that you especially have a close relationship with. That certainly includes tackle shops that you regularly purchase bait and tackle. Also, we are not asking for big sponsorship money! A sponsorship in the range of $100 to $200 is fine! The committee felt that these amounts would not scare potential sponsors away like asking for $1,000 or more. If businesses do not want to make a cash donation, products or services they provide are also acceptable. For example, if a tackle store does not want to give cash, rods, reels, packages of Gulp bait or other products are certainly OK! Sponsors will get their businesses listed on our club website, newsletters and in our tournament promotional materials. Also, if you know of any major contacts (persons in charge) in the fishing industry like Berkley, Shimano etc., that we can send a letter to asking for sponsorships, please let John Toth know so that a letter can be mailed to them. For example, if there is a contact that can give us packages of Gulp bait that would be very useful to us! John can be reached at (732) or at tothjohn@verizon.net. Letters asking for sponsorships on our club letterhead will be available at our meetings so that they can be presented to any business that may want to see an official document pertaining to requests for sponsorships. Member Bill Fish is our chairman for sponsorships and he can be reached at (201) or at billfishicecream@gmail.com.we want our Fluke Tournament in 2014 to be a BIG success and we will do it! More detailed information on this tournament will be discussed at our club meetings. NJ Anglers May See Fluke Size Go Up to 1 to 2 inches in 2014 By John Toth In our July 2012 club newsletter, I wrote an article with the title We lost An Important Council Seat With No Help From The Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA). In this article, I pointed out that New Jersey had a chance to get another seat on the important Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council (MAFMC). This Council is a very important one with many responsibilities including setting up annual catch limits and management rules for federal waters from North Carolina to New York. Chris Zeman, our club member, holds a seat on this Council along with the Director of NJ Fish & Wildlife representing NJ. The JCAA, NJ Outdoor Alliance, NJ Federation of Sportsmens Clubs, Senators Menendez, and Lautenberg and Governor Christie all supported Captain Paul Eidman for the vacant seat on this Council. The RFA, along with the Garden State Seafood opposed Paul Eidman s nomination because of his environmental background and the Garden State Seafood for Paul s efforts to get catch limits placed on menhaden. Instead the RFA supported the New York nominee Anthony DiLernia. Tony DiLeria won this seat over Paul Eidman, even though NJ s fishing economy is much bigger than New York! I also wrote in our July newsletter We can now expect New York to try to take some of our fishing quotas from us (especially for fluke) since they will have more clout on this council. Unfortunately, my prediction may come true. Fluke is presently managed by something called coastal equivalency a system whereby New Jersey is granted a higher fluke quota than other states because it historically has had the largest concentration of fluke in its waters in comparison with other states. Captain Dilernia, newly appointed to this Council, is challenging this system and he is pushing for a regional system that would pool New Jersey s fluke quota with several states, including New York. If approved, New York s proposal can lead to an increase in the size limit for the 2014 fishing year for New Jersey s anglers up to 1 to 2 inches and less fish per trip according to Chris. New York anglers could benefit under this proposal since most likely their size limits for fluke would be reduced and catch limits increased because of their pooling of fluke quotas with other states. The reduction of size limits and more fish to take home for New York anglers is what this is all about. The (MAFMC) is going to have this issue on its agenda at its December meeting and our Chris Zeman will be speaking up against it. Chris has also pointed out that New York s legislators (like Chuck Schumer) have been more involved in fishing issues that NJ s legislators. The JCAA, New Jersey Outdoor Alliance and the NJ Federation of Sportsmen s clubs will be contacting our legislators to fight this proposal and both Chris and I will update you on how this all unfolds.

6 Support our Sponsors On the back of our newsletters, we show sponsors who support our club and when you patronize them, please say that you are a member of our club. For example, Meltzers and the Ramsey Outdoors fishing stores sell tackle to us for our Dark Horse prizes at a discount and they even donated prizes for our Past President s Dinner. It is good for them and for our club to tell them when you buy gear that you are a member since they will know that we are supporting them. Always have your membership card available to possibly get a discount on your purchases. Our sponsors also include other businesses and boat captains, so please patronize these businesses who are sponsors our club.
