2 A Word From The Publisher Many of you will be at the World Skeet Championships when this issue comes out. I wish you good targets, quick reflexes and keen eyesight. Seriously, I do hope everyone shoots at their very best. While you are there, be sure to enjoy Vendors Row. I know that is a highlight for many shooters. The Skeet shooting activities tend to fall off in the Fall. After the World there are many less opportunities. This is due in part by competition with hunting activities and partly because the days will be getting shorter and there are less optimal shooting hours. Before you know it the Holiday Season and Winter will be here. In Louisiana, the last Skeet shoot of the year is the Poule D eau Open at Lafayette Skeet Club on David and Mary Hebert s Farm. This is actually two shoots, a 28 Gauge 200 target marathon on Saturday, October 13th and a.410 Bore 200 target marathon on Sunday, October 14th. These shoots always seem like some of the more fun shoots of the year to me. Usually we have great weather and a lot of fun. If you want to pre-register, let me know. In the last issue we reported on the passing of CMDR Cotton Talbot. This issue, we regret to report the passing of Cedric Vickers of Baton Rouge and Larry Kay of Joaquin, Texas. Their obituaries are listed in the next few pages. We send our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of these Skeet friends. On a brighter note, the weather should be cooling off soon. Birds should start migrating and hunting opportunities are just around the corner. Before you know it we will be taking kids and grand kids to Fall carnivals. October is one of my favorite months, the kids starting to get excited about Halloween and the leaves begin to turn. Thanksgiving will be here soon and then Christmas. Wow! Time does fly when you are having fun. Check out the Tips article by Lee Love regarding rescuing submerged guns on page 12. Until I see you in these pages or on the Skeet field, I am wishing you 3@8! 3 A. Cedric Vickers "God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be so He put His arms around you and whispered come to Me. With tearful eyes, we watched and saw you pass away, and though we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, a precious soul to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best." Cedric, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, and friend, passed away peacefully at the Carpenter House surrounded by his family on Saturday, September 8, Born in Sikes, Louisiana on October 20, 1936 to James Quincy Vickers and Chlotide Herring Vickers. He came to Baton Rouge at the age of 17 to attend LSU where he earned a degree in Education. A 32-year career with EBR City Parish DPW started in the drafting room and concluded at his retirement at the age of 52 as the Head of Data Processing. A man with many hobbies and talents, Cedric was a perfectionist in everything he did. A master in woodworking making everything from furniture to earrings, an avid Skeet shooter: Cedric was a life member of the National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA); serving on the Board of Directors for the Baton Rouge Gun Club, a Director at Large for the Louisiana Skeet Shooting Association (LSSA), and a charter member of Hunters Run Gun Club. He was inducted to the LSSA Hall of Fame in 2001 along with his wife, Teresa. A true competitor and he never lost. This included playing checkers, gin rummy, growing vegetables, hunting, fishing, billiards and, of course Skeet. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Teresa Blanchard Vickers; daughter, Debbie Vickers Stevens (Mark), sons, Michael D. Vickers (Debbie) and Daryl R. Vickers (June); grandchildren, Casey, Alexandra and Cayla Vickers, Leigh Ann Chiari (Fabio), Sarah Loredo (Dyango); Rachael Roeten and fiancé (Kalen Tyler), Rachel, Rebecca and Trent Vickers; Abby, Brandon and Jonathan Stevens; great grandchildren, Mia, Luca and Domani Chiari; a brother, Earl Vickers (Carol) and a niece, Kerry Vickers Krespin (Danny). He is predeceased by his parents, James Quincy Vickers and Chlotide Herring Vickers, and a brother James Tracy Vickers. Visitation was be held on Friday, September 21 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Resthaven Funeral Home and Saturday, September 22nd at 10:00 a.m. at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a Mass of Christian Burial at Noon celebrated by Fr. Donald Blanchard. The family would like to thank the staff at the NCCU at OLOL, Carpenter House and a special caregiver, Theresa Mitchell for their loving care and support. Page 3

4 Larry Kay Larry Kay, 72, of Joaquin Texas, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 15, 2018, in Houston, Texas, with his devoted daughter Amanda by his side. Visitation was be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, September 17, 2018, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center, Texas. A memorial service honoring and celebrating Larry s life was be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 18, 2018, at Watson & Sons. Interment followed at Lone Cedar Cemetery in Joaquin, Texas. Larry Kay was born April 14, 1946 in Center, Texas, to Fred Kay and Ruth Fleming Kay, of Huxley, Texas. Larry grew up in Huxley surrounded by the large Kay family. Larry graduated from Joaquin High School, in Joaquin, Texas where he excelled on the football field. After graduating Larry began a career in construction that took him all over the world, including the Middle East and Asia. A lifelong resident of Joaquin, Larry operated a farm in the Lone Cedar Community with Billie Jean, his beloved wife of forty-nine years. Larry and Billie Jean enjoyed raising horses and cattle and supporting their daughters in their rodeo careers. Larry had an incredible eye for selecting great horses. Larry was an avid hunter. He enjoyed deer hunting, elk hunting, and dove hunting. Some of his most treasured hunting trips include those to Merkel, Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Kentucky, with his family and friends. After he retired, you could find him on his Ranger, riding through his property alongside his black labs. He loved working on his tractor, clearing and cleaning his property, and planting feed plots for his deer and grasses for the horses. Larry proudly showed off his granddaughters, Lila and Ava, to those he greeted. He frequently took Lila and Ava to feed his cows and to visit neighbors and friends. To know Larry was to know an honest, hard-working husband, father, and grandfather. Larry will be remembered for his strength, loyalty, and love of family. Page 4

6 HAT SHOOT EVENT The shooting sports have a tradition that does not appear to be replicated anywhere else, The Hat Shoot Event. Since most of our readers shoot clay targets and many compete in Skeet, Trap or Sporting Clays, most of them know about this tradition. It started long before I started shooting Skeet and I have not yet determined the origin of this tradition. If you know, please enlighten me. For those who do not know, the first time a shooter shoots 25 straight or 50 or 100 straight, his or her shooting friends want to shoot their hat to celebrate. Some clubs have prohibited this practice for safety reasons. Others celebrate it and you will find lots of shot up hats hanging on the walls or from the rafters. Each hat usually has the name of the shooter, the number of targets being celebrated and the date. Most of the clubs (if not all) I shoot at in Louisiana celebrate shooters successes in this manner. Some clubs have implemented some common sense safety rules to protect every one. Here are the rules I use when hosting Skeet shoots. 1. All celebratory hat shoots are held at the end of the shooting day after the competition and the shoot-offs end. This allows all who are interested to participate and/or watch in a safe and controlled manner. 2. The shooters are lined up across the field and are instructed to load only two shells. You may have to direct the shooters as to where to stand for best photographic and safety results. I find that laying down the pull cord can help with that. 3. The shooters are instructed to only shoot the hat in the air when it is thrown. Absolutely no shooting of hats on the ground is allowed. 4. The celebrating shooter, who shot their first straight, puts 3 clay targets in their hat and folds the bill under the back strap to keep it together. I recommend using clay targets and not rocks. 5. The shooter stands behind the line of shooters and pitches the hat underhanded up and over the heads of the shooters as high as they can, but with an arc that places the hat well out in front of the shooters. 6. Since I am taking pictures with my camera on automatic fast setting, I position myself 15 or 20 feet behind the shooters and crouch down and can press the button down to take multiple pictures which include the shooters and the hat being hit in the background. 7. The celebrating shooter is instructed to pitch the hat on my call of Pull. 8. Don t forget to turn on the camera! If you have pictures of a Hat Shoot Event, please send them to us. We love to share success stories! Doug Frey Page 6

11 Rescuing Submerged Guns If you've been flooded out by Hurricane Florence, and your firearms have been immersed in water or got soaked by rainfall while evacuating them from your home, quick response on your part will help minimize the damage. Disassemble and Dry ASAP. If the firearm was immersed in salt water, rinse with fresh water then wipe dry. If you don't have all your normal gun tools with you and can't detail strip them, a hair dryer will help immensely to evaporate water from enclosed spaces. Lubricate Once dry, immediately lubricate preferably with a product designed to displace water. Again, if you are displaced from your home and all you can get your hands on is WD-40 use it! You can fill a cup with WD-40 and soak parts with enclosed cavities (e.g. slides). You will want to detail strip and use your normal lubes later. But the immediate goal is to prevent damage until then. Remove Wood Stocks Wood can take a very long time to completely dry, so just leave them off for now. Also, since they will be outgassing moisture, don't put them back in the same case as the firearm. Leave them out in the open air if possible. If not, put them all together in a separate gun case and include a desiccant pack to help pull out more moisture. Dry your Gun Cases All your wet gun cases and gun rugs must be cleaned and dried before storing guns in them. If immersed in salt water, gun rugs will need to be laundered... or replaced. Plastic or metal gun cases with foam lining can be cleaned and reused. Remove the foam, rinse with fresh water, then wring out and let dry thoroughly. Add a desiccant pack to each case before closing. Don't Forget Your Optics Although rifle scopes and red dot sights are usually waterproof, water may have gotten inside the lens caps and windage/elevation adjustment caps. Remove the caps, rinse the optics with fresh water if needed, dry followed by cleaning with any good optics cleaner. Make sure the caps are themselves clean and dry before placing back on the scope. 15 Funnies ARCHAEOLOGY After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year outside of New York City, scientists found traces of copper cable dating back 100 years. They came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago. Not to be outdone by the New Yorkers, a Los Angeles, California archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet somewhere just outside Oceanside. Shortly after, a story in the LA Times read: "California archaeologists report a finding of 200 year old copper cable, and have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the New Yorkers." One week later, a local newspaper in Carencro, Louisiana, reported the following: "After digging down about 30 feet deep in his pasture near the community of Jeanerette, Boudreaux, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely no wires. Boudreaux has therefore concluded that 300 years ago, Louisiana had already gone wireless". Just makes a person proud to be from Louisiana. I went to the house of horrors for lunch. We had I scream for dessert. The future, the present, and the past walk into a shady bar. Things get tense. A group of termites marches into a saloon and ask: Is the bar tender here? Two monsters went to a Halloween party. Suddenly one said to the other, "A lady just rolled her eyes at me. What should I do?" The other monster replied, "Be a gentleman and roll them back to her." 29 Recipe of the Month One of the favorite desserts served at Skeet shoots at Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club are Debbie s Dump Cakes. Sometimes she does Cherry Dump Cake and sometimes she does Apple Dump Cake. Both are delicious served warm with Blue Bell Vanilla Ice Cream on top. We never have any leftovers. You can also make Blueberry or Peach Dump Cake. The recipe is very simple and does not take much time or effort. Debbie usually makes two, so this recipe is already doubled. Ingredients: 4 21 ounce cans of Apple Pie Filling (two for each cake) 3 Boxes of white or yellow cake mix (1 & ½ per cake) 3 Sticks of unsalted butter (1 & ½ per cake) 1 Cup of chopped pecans (½ per cake) Instructions: 1. Heat the oven to oven to 350 F. 2. Spray the bottom of two 13x9-inch glass baking dishes with cooking spray. 3. Put two cans of pie filling in each dish taking care to spread it evenly. (If you are doing Cherry Dump Cake, cover the filling of each dish with 15 ounces of crushed pineapple to add sweetness. That is not needed for Apple, Peach or Blueberry.) 4. Pour 1 & ½ boxes of cake mix over the pie filling, taking care to spread it evenly. 5. Sprinkle on the pecans. Then pour melted butter over the top. 6. Bake 45 minutes or until bubbly. Serve warm. Enjoy with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Page 29

43 THE RED CHUTE GAZETTE DEAL Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will publish flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via . That s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report, write-up or article suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. It doesn t have to be lengthy and it doesn t have be worthy of a Pulitzer. Just tell or show our readers about the fun you had. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered Skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than Skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events...
