1 December 18, 2013 Age 8/ 3 rd Grade Good News Session: 4th Sunday of Advent Gospel Theme: The World is Ready for Jesus CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS Provided for you: Gathering activity worksheet (wordsearches, puzzles, etc) Pflaum Pamphlet to go Home December 22 nd. And December 25th LITURGICAL YEAR / FEAST DAYS CATHOLIC TRADITION 4th Sunday of Advent Sunday Gospel Readings: SESSION NOTES We suggest that you start the day with your Advent Session plan and do the class celebration at the end of class. Please read the session plan on the following pages for the additional activities for this week, along with guidelines for any parties you may want to have with your class. We are happy to provide the supplies for any of the activities / crafts listed, but you MUST REQUEST THEM IN ADVANCE. Please use the Catechist Communication form to let us know what you need.

2 CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS You may choose to do a combination of any of the following things during this time. Games: o Mrs. & Mrs. Wright (directions below) MUST BE REQUESTED o Christmas Picture Bingo o Advent Bingo o Journey to Bethlehem Board Game Crafts: o Christmas Coupon book for parents (directions below) MUST BE REQUESTED Class Party o Planned by catechists. o PLEASE CHECK WITH ALL PARENTS REGARDING FOOD ALLERGIES OR RESTRICTIONS!

3 MR. AND MRS. WRIGHT MATERIALS: Mr. and Mrs. Wright story (found below) Gift Bag (not to be looked in there are prizes inside!) INSTRUCTIONS: Have the children sit in a circle. Choose one child to hold the gift bag. Instruct the children not to look in the bag. Explain that you are going to tell the story of Mr. and Mrs. Wright. o Every time they hear the words right or left they are to pass the gift once in that direction. o The may need a practice sentence such as The right (bag is passed once to the right) answer to the riddle was on the left (bag is passed once to the left) side of the page. Read the story and play the game. The child with the bag at the end can open it and pass the prizes out to the class. The prizes will be holy cards or other items from our miscellaneous prize bin.

4 Mr. and Mrs. Wright This is a story about Mr. and Mrs. Wright. One evening, they decided it was the right time to bake Christmas cookies. Oh no! cried Mrs. Wright, We have no vanilla left! I can t believe you didn t check your supplies before you started, grumbled Mr. Wright. Without vanilla, the cookies will not taste right! Don t worry we can fix this, replied Mrs. Wright. It will take only a half hour to go right to the store and right back. My favorite brand is at Harry s. I ll write down the name for you. Just go down Jones Road and turn left onto Woodstock Road. Turn right onto Highway 92, then left onto Crabapple Road, then right onto Hembree Road, then left onto Upper Hembree Road until you see Harry s on your right. If you get to Alpharetta Highway, you ve gone too far and must turn right around said Mrs. Wright. I know where Harry s is, thought Mr. Wright. I ve only lived right here in Roswell for the last 10 years! Mr. Wright found the store and asked the clerk where to find the vanilla. The clerk replied Go right, left, right again and the vanilla will be on your right if there is any left. Thanks, said Mr. Wright. Mr. Wright paid for the vanilla and a chocolate pecan pie and walked right out the door. But he couldn t remember where he left his car. Then he remembered that he drove Mrs. Wright s van and his car was in his driveway at home, right where he left it. Eventually, a weary Mr. Wright made it back home. Mrs. Wright had been waiting impatiently. I thought you would be right back, she said. I left everything out on the kitchen counter and the kids got into the chocolate chips. I have to go right out again. Mr. Wright looked at her. He had no energy left. I am taking my pie and I am going right to bed to watch TV, he said. Mrs. Wright thought to herself, I ll get these cookies made and they will be just right. And if he is lucky, he ll get the crumbs that are left. She got her keys, told Mr. Wright that she would be right back and left him with his pie and the kids.

5 CHRISTMAS COUPON BOOK MATERIALS: Coupon templates Construction Paper Crayons or markers INSTRUCTIONS Have a brief discussion about gifts. Explore the idea of gifts from the heart. They may not cost any money but are valuable. Exchange ideas about what gifts the children could give to their parents Using the coupon book templates, have the children write their gifts to their parents. Choose construction Paper for front and back cover of book. Hole punch the gift coupons and the construction paper. Tie together with Ribbon. Coupons can also be stapled together for easier version. Construction Paper can also be used for the children to make a Christmas Card for their parents. Coupon book can also be put inside card (making sure the coupons don t fall out.)
