As Lester A. Ackerman, presdent of the Agend, sad lwhen he publshed the order requrng every Freshman to delver 15 pounds of metal before proceedng on hs errand, "\Ve are takng advantage of our superorty over the Freshman to help out the natonal war effort." The pcture on the rght wtnesses the success of ther msson. Durng the absence of the Freshmen from ther rooms n the dorms, '45 wth tradtonal gusto went to work stackng. Such a complete and thorough job was done that t s dcbatable who dd the most work durng the course of the evennll: the Freshmen who had to do such sundry thngs as stand on the corner of Tremont St. vwth shoe box and solct free shnes untl three ll the mornng, or the Sophs, who went nto the furnturt movng busness whle they were away. Wthout doubt the Freshmen must have been the most tred, for the next day '45 Nwalked off the feld aganst the numercal superorty of the under classmen wth a complete wvn of 11-8 ponts. n the frst event of the afternoon the Soph basketball team defeated the Frosh However, t must be admtted that the Freshman Marakas-coached team got off to the best start, for at the end of the frst half they led ther opponents by a score of The second event, swxmmnlg, was chalked tp as another wn, as the recordmakng Soph medley team stroked n. The tug-of-war, frst of only tvwo Soph losses, and glove fght, came when thle Freshman tuggers pulled ther opponents over just n tme for the glove fght. The answer, t w-ould appear, s th t '46 lacked the sprt for the job. Ths Ns not the fault of the men who comprs d the class; they came from the same scho( s and places as dd the class of '45, but ' e e treated wth so much soft soap and char - os that class sprt and unty were colpletl undeve-cloped. 6 b j E The fnest museum of paper, paper-makng, and early prntng methods n the Unted States s located on the thrd floor of Buldng 5. The case n the left foreground contans early Chnese prntng blocks collected by Hunter. Vu vsts a DARD HUNTER Dard Hunter reached across a desk crowded wth a ple of galley proofs of hs latest book and several old books n unusual bndngs. He extrcated a battered Chnese dctonary from the bottom of a ple and contnued: "Now, n ths volume you can see how the Chnese were forced to alter ther brush-made characters so that they could be adapted to prntng wth type." And agan the ntervew was momentarly forgotten as Dard Hunter went on to descrbe another phase of a subject to whch he has devoted a lfetn of study. Mr. Hunter s a member of a famlwhch has made paper-makng and prn!- ng ts busness for sx generatons, and thus t s no surprse that he began wore n ths art under the gudance of hs father and s stll workng n the same feld. At the turn of the century he went out on hs own to collect nformaton on prntng and paper-makng among all cvlzatons. Snce then he has traveled far: to many countres n Europe; to Chna, The methods used by these Tbetan paper-makers have not changed n a thousand years. Large quanttes of strong bark papers have been mported from Japan by the Unted States for ndustral use. Technque. o make the book one whch wll be crshed as a permanent record of lfe at.chnologv, to make t a vwork of art n c real sense of the phrase, and to make readable and enjoyable to the owner: lat s the task of the staff of Technque..and ths year, for the frst tme, came the Jded job of gettng the book out n a nrmer term and sx weeks of the fall. The staff has seemed to do an excellent,b. Publcaton s scheduled for December S, and at the tme /'u went to press, the carbook had been put to bed on schedule!d wth everythng n order. n md- November 950 copes had been sold, and total crculaton was expected to reach 1200 before the book came out. Theme of the book ths year s M.. T. at War. From the steel-helmeted beaver on the front cover, to the war-busy professors at the rear of the book, we are taken through the progress of a year at Technology n wartme. Every yearbook staff says "We are really havng a changed book", but Messner, McJunkn, and the boys have done somethng ths year that s radcally dfferent from anythng done n the M.. T. yearbook before. Startng wth the declaraton of war on December 7, they have followed the course of events n student lfe throughout the year untl press tme. Chronologcal presentaton brought up dffcultes of workng n the actvtes whch go on through the whole year, but ths has been accomplshed wth admrable skll. The slghtly expanded book has 320 pages ths year. The work whch could be done n the summer was lmted, so ths fall the mdnght lghts have been burnng for many nghts, and the smell of hypo and D-76 have been notceable n the darkroom far nto the mornngs. Crculaton and advertsng campagns have been busy throughout the summer and fall. Ths s the prevew of the 1943 Technque. We commend t to you. Advce, suggestons, and contnuous help from Dno Valz, the prnter, keep the book n step wth the techncal possbltes of the prntng process, keep the cost down, the level of artstc achevement hgh. For dssemnaton of polces from above, and for dscusson of problems wthn the group, frequent meetngs of the Junor Board of Technque are held. Especally ths year, wth the tme element causng accelerated programs for each department of the book, ntegraton of the work of the varous groups s essental.

10 v Above: To take the dullness out. of the long evenngs of checkng and plannng, Howard McJunkn, edtor-n-chef of Technque, fnds nothng so pleasant as female company. That sympathetc look n Mary Needles' eye s for the out-of-commsson arm. Ja M m Upper left: Wth the year book, ncome from sales goes a long way toward meetng the costs of publcaton. Sales and publcty are spread throughout the year. Here we have a late fall sales campagn n Buldng 10 Lobby. Poster was used as a come-on. Crcle: n an attempt to gve the sedate Technque offce somethng of the appearance of a newspaper cty room, Bll Clark, junor board lterary man, tears hs har and absorbs large quanttes of coke, tryng to get just the rght phrase for that headlne. Perhaps he had better dg the thesaurus out of the lbrary. Bottom: Although Technque s one of the few organzatons at Technology on whch the senor board works harder than the rest of the staff, there s no lack of work for dlgent freshmen. Here a group of them gong about ther tasks n the offce. n the job of sellng advertsements, partcularly, the whole staff, regardless of department, worked wth vgor durng the summer and the early fall.

11 t above: Although a smaller part of the ncome,f a yearbook than of other types of publcatons, -dvertsng s nevertheless mportant. Bll Schlegel *vas among the members of the staff who helped ell the ads and arrange copy deas for the mutual beneft of book and advertser.. Top rght: n a darkroom shared wth Vu, Stevens, Farrell, and Schoenberg, Technque thotographers, spend long hours preparng the pctures they have taken for the prnter. Although consderable research has been done on the matter, no satsfactory explanaton has been dscovered as yet for the nscrpton on the wall. Crcle: Wth the emphass placed n recent years on makng Technque a school year book rather than prmarly a class book, Potter Hanson does hs best to sell a copy of the book to a freshman. Sales fgures ths year ndcate that about half the crculaton s outsde of the senor class. Bottom: At the end of the year, the volume s presented and the new board announced at Technque's banquet, one of the outstandng events of the year for those nvted to attend. Unlke the stuaton at other publcatons banquets, guests are n order here. Herb Knape seems to be beamng over somethng: we can hear hm tellng hs date, "That pcture s my masterpece."

The best s none too good for ths year's freshmen, and among the servces they requred at the Freshman smoker was that of Jack Tyrrell, G. Ths s an mportant part of Emerson tranng. n ths ssue Vu attempts to gve you a thumbnal sketch of the scenes behnd the scenes at Emerson College. (Crcle 8727 for you lovers of the rare combnaton of pulchrtude and ntellgence). Contrary to the average Tech man's belef s the fact that Emerson s co-educatonal: for those readers who snff at the dea of men studyng drama, your reporter refers you to Alfred Lunt, an alumnus of Emerson College. The four years at Emerson are flled wth courses rangng from speech, dcton, and phlosophy to costumng, scene pantng, and make-up. n addton, languages, physcal educaton, and hstory of playwrtng form an ntegral part of the average Emersonan's currculum. Many plays are open to the publc n Emerson's playhouse where large numbers of Tech men can often be found spendng an entertanng evenng attendng a reproducton of a Broadway ht or a group of playlets and pantommes. Emerson takes a deep nterest n the opnons of the theatre crowds of Boston and the Tech men who attend ther plays. Emerson receves a constructve and ntellgent crtcsm of the play whle the audence receves an evenng of good entertanment. The pctures heren presented were taken on one of Emerson's many "frst nghts". Our staff photographers heartly agree (Contnued on page 24)
