2 A Word From The Publisher The past few weeks have been very busy in Louisiana. The recent storms have had a great many of our residents dealing with the havoc of record flooding caused by torrential rains causing much devastation, property damage and loss of life. Our hearts go out to all who have lost family, friends and who have suffered through these trying times. We thank all of those who have and are still volunteering to help those in need. This Skeet year is rapidly coming to an end. As I write this, many Skeet shooters are already preparing for the World Skeet Championships. In our state, the next registered Skeet shoot will actually be the Poule D eau Open at Lafayette Skeet Academy October This shoot is always fun. Held after the World, it seems more relaxed and one of the more enjoyable shoots of the year. While that will be the end of the Louisiana Skeet program for Our friends in neighboring states have shoots scheduled for November and December. If you are hosting a shoot this Fall and Winter be sure to send us your flyers. As always, we will help you get the word out. Until I see you on the Skeet field or in these pages, I am wishing you 8. 15 Florida Parishes Skeet & Conservation Association As many of our readers know, I grew up in Amite, Louisiana. Amite is the Parish Seat for Tangipahoa Parish, located in the Southeastern part of Louisiana in the toe of the boot between Mississippi and Lake Pontchartrain. It is a long or I should say a tall Parish (for the uneducated, Louisiana does not have Counties) dissected by Interstate 55 which run from Chicago, South to New Orleans. Parallel to I 55 is the Tangipahoa River which starts in South Mississippi and meanders South to the big lake. The Tangipahoa River is a beautiful river, shallow enough to be enjoyed by swimmers and tubers and deep enough to be enjoyed by fishermen who like to do float trips. In my early years, I fished that river with my father Samuel D. Frey, Jr. on many occasions. For many years, we used a wooden john boat that my father had built himself. In the late 70s and early 80s, we used a canoe. I know I am getting off track here, but I cannot help but think about Dad and fishing that river when I think about the Florida Parishes Skeet and Conservation Association. The Florida Parishes Skeet and Conservation Association is located on the banks of the Tangipahoa River just East of Amite, Louisiana. It was established in 1952 (the year I was born). In 1954, the club house was built. At one time, the club had seven working Skeet fields and a pistol range. My Dad was actually the Club Manager from 1969 until his death in Page 15

16 Florida Parishes Skeet & Conservation Association In 2005 a Cowboy Action Shooting facility was added. The club has sponsored many Skeet shoots over the years, as well as youth shooting programs and charity shoots. The facilities have been used to host many parties, re-unions and social events. I personally attended a number of high school class reunions at the club. At one time, this club was very active in hosting Skeet shoots. The Louisiana State Skeet Championships were held their a number of times. One of the favorite shoots for many was the annual Strawberry & Cream shoot held in Spring during strawberry season. I remember shooting the Strawberry & Cream and I also remember shooting my very first State Championship at this club in The club has not held any registered Skeet shoots for some time. I was personally hoping we could actually change that. It seems a shame not to be shooting at what may be one of the most beautiful settings for a Skeet club. I had been visiting with Nick Brocato, Range Master for the club, about this very thing. Unfortunately, before we could actually meet, disaster struck. As those in this area know, and anyone who has been watching the news, Louisiana was hit by an unnamed storm which literally sat over the Southern portion of the state and dropped torrential rains for several days in late August. Some areas reported receiving over 31 inches of rain in three days. This caused massive flooding and catastrophic property damage across much of South Louisiana. All of the bayous and rivers in South Louisiana were suddenly overflowing. I believe that Livingston Parish alone reported the loss of over 70,000 homes. Many of those homes did not have flood insurance, because they were not in a designated flood zone. The disaster recovery is still underway. I was in Baton Rouge this past week and the hotel I stayed in was literally full of volunteer relief workers and some displaced flood victims. Page 16

17 Florida Parishes Skeet & Conservation Association The Tangipahoa River also reached record flood levels. The Florida Parish Skeet & Conservation Association was severely damaged. This was the second flood the club has experienced this year. It has been flooded on numerous occasions over the years, but this flood was the worst. As shown in these photos, the front wall of the club house was pushed in. Page 17

18 Florida Parishes Skeet & Conservation Association After the water receded, the beautiful terrazzo floors were covered with river sand and silt. Three of the Skeet houses were completely washed off their foundations. They were reported to have been moved three miles downriver. Page 18

19 Florida Parishes Skeet & Conservation Association The members of the Florida Parishes Skeet & Conservation Association are hard at work rebuilding following the storm. The club is closed until the rebuilding can be completed. Damage to the club is estimated to be in excess of $75,000 and with the club receiving a number of inquiries on what can be done to help, the Club has established a Recovery Fund and will be accepting donations to re-build the club and shooting facilities. For information on how you can help, follow the link below to find out how: I want to thank Nick Brocato for sharing these photos of the storm damage done to this once beautiful facility. 21 2016 North Louisiana Open Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club on Barksdale, AFB hosted the North Louisiana Open August 26-28, This shoot is our annual 5 gun shoot. We host about 6 shoots a year, but all of the others are one day programs. It has been a wet Summer and we were fortunate not to have any issues with rain other than a brief shower on Sunday during the.410 Event. The program started on Friday with 100 Doubles targets. Harry Yin Deng [pictured below] commanded the field and claimed the Doubles Championship posting a 95. He was followed by Jacob Young with 94 and Ken Wright with 90. Ken Wright Page 21

Then, after lunch he went back out and posted another 99 earning the opportunity to shoot-off with Jacob Young and Harry Yin Deng. Mike won the shoot-off and Jacob took Runner- Up, and Harry Third. Pictured below are Jacob Young, Michael Vickers, and Harry Yin Deng. Harry had his Perazzi worked on and was shooting with new chokes this weekend. It really paid off for him. Page 23

28 2016 North Louisiana Open As for many of our shoots, we were blessed to have Lloyd Webb [pictured above] cook for us Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday we had fried catfish and on Sunday Lloyd grilled burgers. Both days he had some help from Kyong Lee [on the right]. Debbie Frey provided a delicious Very Berry Trifle for dessert on Saturday. This fairly healthy treat was very well received. On Sunday, Debbie made Paula Dean s Ice Cream Sandwich Cake. This one was not so healthy, but very popular on this hot August Sunday afternoon. Page 28

42 nies Funnies Is there Skeet in Heaven? Jill and Jane had been best friends for years, and they both lived into their early 90s, when Jill suddenly fell deathly ill. Her friend Jane comes to visit her on her deathbed. Jane and Jill are reminiscing about their long friendship, when the Jane asks Jill, When you die, will you do me a favor? I want to know if there is Skeet in heaven? Jill thought about the question and the many times that she and Jane had shot in Skeet tournaments together as two woman teams in their early years. They had dominated in their State Championships and had even shot the World Skeet Championships in San Antonio a few times. It was so much fun. Then Jill said, We have been friends for many years. This request I will do for you, and then Jill dies. A couple days after the funeral, Jane is sleeping when she hears her friend Jill s voice. The voice says, Jane, I have got some good news and I have some bad news for you. The good news is that there is Skeet in heaven! Jane, the bad news is, you are squadded with me on Saturday. See you soon. Page 42

57 THE RED CHUTE GAZETTE DEAL Mission Statement The goal of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote the game of American Skeet. Our target market includes Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. Our goal is accomplished through publication and distribution an Internet only magazine containing items of interest to those individuals participating in, promoting and supporting registered skeet shoots. Subject matter includes calendars of upcoming events, shoot flyers, shoot reports and pictures. Also included are articles and stories about bird hunting, travel and food. The Deal The Red Chute Gazette will publish flyers advertising registered skeet shoots for your gun club at no cost to your club. Simply send us your flyer in Microsoft Word or PDF format via . That s FREE! The Catch If we agree to publish your shoot flyers, you agree to provide us with a shoot report, write-up or article suitable for printing in the Red Chute Gazette. Include pictures (jpeg or gif files) if possible. It doesn t have to be lengthy and it doesn t have be worthy of a Pulitzer. Just tell or show our readers about the fun you had. What about Sporting Clays and Trap or other events? The mission of the Red Chute Gazette is to promote interest and participation in registered Skeet. Sporting Clays and Trap are not subjects we focus on. We recognize that many gun clubs offer events other than Skeet. We are happy to provide commercial advertising space for clubs that wish to promote other shooting related events... Please contact us for our very reasonable rates for commercial advertisers To take advantage of this service contact Doug Frey by phone at (318) or via at publisher@redchutegazette.com All Rights Reserved Douglas F.
