In Liverpool, there are 7 national museums. We first thought that we would visit the slavery museum, but we didn t feel like seeing something really serious. We wanted to visit the museum of Liverpool but it was closed. Finally, we went to the Walker art gallery. It was great! 7. What does Nicolas buy? - Nicolas : Hold on, Charlotte! I have to buy something for my grandpa! He will turn 70 next week. I ve just seen some beautiful books in a library. - Charlotte : don t buy him any books, he won t understand the language! Buy him a souvenir of Liverpool. - Nicolas : No, he has enough stuff at home. We were eating roast lamb for Sunday lunch and it was the lambing season and there were all these beautiful little lambs gamboling around. Then we just looked at the lamb on our plate and looked at them outside again and thought we re eating one of those little things that is gaily running around outside. It just struck us, and we said Wait a minute maybe we don t want to do this. And that was it, that was the big turning point and we said we d give up meat. The difficult thing was that immediately there was a hole in the middle of the plate every time you came to have a meal. Gradually Linda started to fill it with spaghetti or a bit of quiche, then egg dishes and cheese pies and it started to get really good and tasty. Plus I brought in a lot of the English stuff; mashed potatoes and rice pudding. Anyway, little by little she just sort of filled in and we never noticed not having meat. Once we started looking for them, we discovered a whole range of vegetarian products. Then what happens is that you really get into it and start becoming activist because you realise that what you re doing is helping to save these poor animals from getting shunted into a slaughterhouse. And so the spiritual side of your life changes. What happens, like me and like Linda and like most of us, you grow up with your Mum and Dad saying Eat your meat it s good for you and, secondly, it s our tradition to do so. We re British and British people eat meat steeped in our traditions, and that is a very important thing in people s consciousness. The other great thing is that our tradition is changing. You would never have seen wine on the table 4

5 when we were kids. Now even ordinary British people can have a bottle of wine with their meals. It s like you would never have seen us eating curries when I was a kid, but we all do now. So along with all that I think it s perfectly feasible for people to change. I think there s going to be some very interesting developments in maybe 10, 20, 30 years. 14 biggest 15 once Wednesday 18 midnight 19 Monday Welcome to the International Beatles Week Festival, one of the biggest music events in the world. The festival takes place once a year in the city of Liverpool, where it all began! You don t need to be a Beatles fan to enjoy the festival, because there are a lot of things to do. This is truly an international event with bands from over 20 countries and also live gigs, exhibitions, video shows, sightseeing tours and a convention. Each day has its highlight. On Wednesday, the festival begins. Live bands are playing in the cavern club and in the cavern pub. On Thursday, lives bands are playing from midnight onwards. On Friday night is the Beatles night. Very exciting! On Saturday, you can assist with a concert in the philharmonic hall. Sunday is the day of the Beatles convention. Monday s highlight is the Matthew Street festival, which is a must when you are in Liverpool. Tuesday is the last day of the festival; lives bands are playing all day and all night. To put it in a nutshell: you will have a great time. PARTIE 4 PART 4 A B 20 X 21 X 22 X 23 X 24 X 25 X - Charlotte : The Liverpool airport, called John Lennon airport, is really nice. It s quite small, but you can find everything you want. - Nicolas : yes, it s Ok but it is quite far away from the town centre. That s why I don t really like flying. - Charlotte : well, I think flying is the best way to travel, especially to England, since it is an island. - Nicolas : yes, but for me, going to an island can be fun : I like traveling on a ferry boat. That s quite exciting! - Charlotte : I hate ferries, I m sea sick! - Nicolas : well, ok, you d better fly then! - Charlotte : My dad takes the train to go to London, the Eurostar. It seems to be OK. - Nicolas : Taking the train to London is a good idea, because you arrive directly in the city centre and you don t waste your time in shuttles from the airport. - Charlotte : OK, but then, how do you go to Liverpool? - Nicolas : well, you take another train to Liverpool. It s easy - Charlotte : it s not as easy as it seems, I think, because you also have to change the train station in London and it can be quite long! - Nicolas : anyway, there are enough possibilities to travel to England. Some even takes their car on the ferry and drive up to the North. - Charlotte : that s right, but I couldn t drive on the left side! 5
