2 Fish Stories - Czech Nymphing Czech Nymphing The Czech technique is mostly associated with three flies, although the use of two flies is often used. A sight indicator is tied onto the butt section of the leader and attached to the flyline. On a 3 fly rig, the bottom fly is the lightest, i.e. wet fly; the middle fly is the heaviest, i.e. beadhead stonefly; and the top fly is a medium weight fly, i.e. Czech nymph. On a 2 fly rig the heaviest fly is always the bottom (point) fly. The flies are attached to a 4' to 8' fluorocarbon leader with 4-5" tags that are created with Surgeon's or Blood knots. The distance from the middle fly to the fly line should be 1 1/2 times the depth you are fishing. The rig is lobbed a short distance upstream and the middle fly sinks to the bottom forcing the lighter fly to trail along deep but higher than the beadhead. The three flies work together with the heaviest beadhead bouncing off the bottom, the lightest fly in the middle of the water column, and the medium weight nymph drifting through the upper portion. A tight line to the flies is maintained by raising the rod tip and slightly leading the nymph rig through the feeding zone. There is a quick lift of the rig at the end of the drift and the rig is wrist snapped back behind the angler for the next lob cast. Most nymphers will use this technique in about 3-4 feet of water and will work their way upstream covering the feeding zones. It works best in pocket water and heavy riffles. Czech nymphs are generally Caddis Larvae type patterns and can be used exclusively with the nymphing technique. But, the technique can also be applied to a number of other nymph patterns as well such as wet flies, pupa patterns, and stones. Indicator 6 ft. 1.5 X water depth 1 ft 6 in.. 1 ft. 6 in. Last spring I was sitting in past president, Matt Van De Motter's office when he introduced a fellow who he had seen fishing the Little Juniata in Pennsylvania. Matt was with a group of 5 or 6 guys who were having little success in catching fish (less that 1 each). This fellow had caught 8 fish. Matt said this fellow was using the Czech method of nymphing. I went home, looked up Czech nymphing systems, and tied up a leader as shown above. He also recommended tying on the flies with a loop rather than a clinch knot to improve the action. I went down to the Clear Fork branch of the Mohican River near Bellville, Ohio and caught 6 fish using this system. I would suggest you try it. George Klein

In 2003, he decided to move back to Lynchburg to guide his home waters where he now runs his own Orvis Endorsed guide service, fishing for muskies, smallmouth bass, trout, and striped bass. Matt's guided trips are run on the James, New, Jackson, and the Roanoke rivers, to name a few. Matt loves guiding, teaching, being on the water, and tying his own flies. 5 We are extremely excited for the return of the Fly Fishing Film Tour (F3T) to the museum in 2016! With a diverse and exciting collection of film shorts, more exhibitors and an extended pre-party reception this iteration of the tour promises to deliver. Best of all, we re happy to announce that Hank Patterson, Your Fly Fishing Guide, will be introducing this year s event! Hank has become an internet sensation for his short comedic takes on the art of fly fishing. His program promises to deliver plenty of laughs and you will NOT want to miss it, so be sure to arrive on time. Take a sneak peak at Doors to the museum open at 5:00 PM on Saturday, March 5th. Vendors will be set up throughout the main concourse. There will be a cash bar, and appetizers are included with the cost of a ticket. Visitors should take advantage of this time to chat with friends and engage with vendors and other organizations on hand to support the event. There will also be raffle tickets available for purchase and other opportunities to win or purchase great fly fishing gear, so please plan accordingly! Seating in the auditorium will begin around 6:20 PM with the presenting speaker introduced at 6:45 PM. Films will begin shortly after 7:00 and will end apx. 9:30 PM with a brief intermission/last call in between. Members of the F3T planning committee will also be hosting the 2nd annual Cleveland Iron Fly Competition post party at Market Garden Brewery on West 25th in Ohio City. The event is open to any and all tiers regardless of experience level and will begin at 10:00 PM. We recommend that those interested in participating bring their own vise and tools (materials will be provided).tickets are $20.00 presale or $25.00 at the door (limited availability, first come - first served). Tickets can be purchased online at or at the following locations: Orvis (Westlake and Woodmere), Backpackers, and Chagrin River Outfitters. Parking is limited If the lot is full plan on using the Art Museum or the VA Hospital parking facilities. Shuttle service from the VA lot will be provided.

6 Officers Bamboo Notes: The Lampros Fishing Report by Jim Lampros The most recent cold snap has had northeast Ohio rivers choked with ice for the last few weeks and has made fishing a challenge. In weeks leading up to the freeze a strong run of fish had produced some of the best steelhead fishing of the fall/early winter season, and those adventurous enough to look for open water have still been finding a few of those fish to play with. Many are optimistic that we could see the true start of spring steelhead season as early as the beginning of March this year, but only time and weather will tell!
