2 A Word From The Publisher Happy Ground Hog Day! The news from Gobbler s Knob, Pennsylvania today is that Punxsutawney Phil was not frightened by his shadow and Spring will come early this year. My own prognosticator, the weeds greening up in my yard, indicates the same thing. That can only mean that Skeet Season is upon us. There are several happening in Zone VI this month. Several clubs have already sent us their shoot flyers and we have placed them on our website for your planning purposes. Most of the area State Skeet Shoot Schedules have been posted. We are working to get the missing ones up. The Arkansas shoots have been scheduled, but I haven t had time to prepare that for you. It is on my list. On March 9th, Lafayette Skeet Academy will once again host their Youth Skeet Event. If you have a youngster who might enjoy this activity and you live within driving distance of Kaplan, Louisiana, I encourage you to check out the flyer on our website. The event is free but preregistration is a must. The Louisiana Skeet Season kicks off at the Lafayette Skeet Academy with the Crawfish Étouffée Open on March 10. I am handling pre-registration for that shoot. If you want to get in on that fun, let me know. We are also taking reservations for the Windy Open which will be held at Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club on Barksdale, AFB on March 23. Dave O Quinn is working on a flyer for the 12 Gauge Marathon which will be held on March 16 at Hunter s Run Gun Club in Port Allen, Louisiana. We will post that with all the other flyers on our website when we receive it. If your club is hosting a Skeet shoot please send us your flyers. We will be happy to share them on our Flyers Page at: The sooner you get those to us the better results you will have. Many people now use our website to help plan their Skeet itineraries. As you plan your activities this year, be sure to think of ways you can help others to enjoy our sport. Volunteer to help at your club. Invite a friend. Encourage a young shooter. Make a difference. You will be the one to benefit most from your own generosity. Until we meet again in these pages or on the Skeet field, I am wishin you 8. Doug Frey. Doug Frey Page 2

11 Cost Saving Tip These days we are all looking for cost savings opportunities to help us better afford our skeet habit. Many of us reload shells. When available, reclaimed shot is popular. On occasion I have washed my favorite shooting hat in the dishwasher. You may have done that yourself. I have one of those plastic cap frames which was designed for that very purpose. I don t think you really need the frame, just put the hat on the top shelf and wash it with your dishes. We use Cascade. That tip is probably not news to most of our readers. But you may not have tried to do that with ear plugs. I use the orange Howard Leight Super Leight Uncorded Disposable Earplugs. They offer a 33dB Noise Reduction Rating, which is supposedly as high as you can get in a single-use foam earplug. I like them because they are comfortable and, if you buy in quantity, not to expensive. I just found a tub of 100 pairs for $37.99 on the internet. Being a bit of a tight-wad myself, I ignore the single use idea and reuse my plugs until they get too dirty to use. After a few uses, they do get pretty nasty. The earwax transfer tends to hang on to powder residue and dirt. I am pretty sure it is not a good idea to be stuffing that into my ear canal. I recently had some success with an experiment in washing these plugs in our dishwasher. As shown in the picture on the right, our dishwasher has a special compartment with a lockable lid for small objects. This seemed to be the perfect opportunity to test was plug washing idea. As you can see by the before and after photos below, it worked pretty well. I know, I know. Saving forty cents a pair on earplugs will not put much gas in my Tahoe. But I can sleep better at night knowing that I am doing my part to help prevent overfilling the public landfill with materials that will not breakdown for a million years. 12 Obituary Master Engraver, William (Bill) Hugh Mains, 76, of Knightstown, IN, passed peacefully in Bandera, TX on Dec. 28, Born July 13, 1936 in Stroh, IN, he was preceded in death by his father, Hugh W., mother, Frances E. (Martindill) Mains, brother, Paul A. Mains, and middle daughter, Pamela S. Mains. He is survived by his sister, Margaret Coggeshall of Plant City, FL, daughters Robin E. Mains and Kimberly B. Mains-Agee, his three precious granddaughters, latter all of Mt. Juliet, TN, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews across the globe. In 1946 Bill moved with his family to Davie, FL, where he attended grades 5 through 12, graduating from Fort Lauderdale High School Spring of Bill began his career by serving in goldsmith and watchmaker apprenticeship positions during high school. He went on to graduate in winter 1954 as a hand jewelry engraver from Bowman Technical School in Lancaster, PA. Following his draft notice in 1955 Bill entered the United States Air Force (USAF), serving in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) during the height of the Cold War; during this time he began hand-engraving guns. Following honorable discharge from the USAF (1963), Bill invented the Rotary Foot-Wheel Engraving Bench, resembling a potter s wheel with a lathe chuck on top, allowing him to create his renowned continuous-scroll style of hand engraving. After moving away from Davie, FL in 1962, Bill and his growing family lived south of Buffalo, NY area until 1974, when they relocated to Las Vegas, NV. In 2001 Bill moved his home base to Knightstown, IN, but he continued to travel the U.S. doing his craft on the gun club circuit as he so enjoyed, right up until his recent passing. Bill has been the contracted factory engraver for several firearm manufacturers during his long career. He was the primary factory Colt engraver from , and is attributed in many books with having engraved more 2nd generation Colt Single Actions, than any other engraver. Most of Bill s factory engraved colts are stamped with a small buffalo under the cylinder pin, as he was working out of Buffalo, NY at that time. He was also the factory engraver for the Ithaca Gun Company, engraving all of their Single Barreled Trap Guns and many others for the last eleven years of their production. During Bill s twenty-seven years in Las Vegas, NV, he engraved guns, jewelry, and other items for celebrities such as Elvis, Frank & Barbara Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Liberace, Steven Spielberg, Buddy Hackett, Wayne Newton, Shirley McClain, BB King, etc., famous boxers Ridick Bowe, the Spinks Brothers, Mike Tyson, Oscar de la Hoya, and prominent political figures, Lt Col Oliver North, and former leaders of Indonesia (Suharto) and Algeria (Boumedienne). Bill also engraved for thousands of private individuals through his long career and his work has been featured in numerous books and magazines. Bill enjoyed a life of traveling, including regular stays at various gun clubs and trap shoots, meeting people and friends, old and new, always enjoying the work he loved - engraving. Not only was he an artisan well-respected and renowned across the globe, Bill also firmly owned the title of loving and devoted Father and Grandpa. Undoubtedly, even now, Bill is keeping busy-as-usual, engraving Heavens streets of gold. Funeral services were held January 25 th, 2012 at the Nashville National Cemetery, 1420 Gallatin Road South, Madison, TN. Page 12

13 Make It Easy Most of our shooters know what is required to register to shoot at a NSSA sanctioned shoot. However, after spending some time registering shooters at several shoots last year, it became clear to me that many shooters are either new to the game or have forgotten what is needed at the registration desk. Please remember that at most shoots the individuals doing the actual registration are volunteers and we should make their job as easy as possible. The registration is most important so that all targets are correctly recorded with NSSA. If the shooter gives inaccurate information at the registration desk, then it will be wrongly reported to NSSA. If the shoot program asks for advanced or pre-registration, then by all means try to comply and pre-register. This helps shoot management in knowing how many fields will be needed, the number of referees needed, meal planning and flight scheduling and timing. The following information is required at all shoots: Name and address as shown on the NSSA score card. NSSA member number. State member number. Gauge classification as shown on your up-to-date scorecard. Concurrent classification as shown on your scorecard. You should have already determined the events and purses that you intend to shoot. Have your entry fee (money) ready when you register. By having the above information ready when you arrive at the registration desk, your shoot will start smoothly and all information will be accurately recorded. Good luck to everyone and let s have fun! Dan Gibbon We want to thank Dan Gibbon for contributing this article. It actually ran in our January 2010 issue. It is good advice and was worth sharing again. Page 13

22 Dining on The Road Papa-Rocco s, Gulf Shores, Alabama In December, the Frey family spent some quality time in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Last month I told you about Jesse s Restaurant and The Cold Hole. That is definitely a place to visit and off the beaten path. This month I am writing about a place that is not off the beaten path. In fact, it is right on Highway 59 in the middle of Gulf Shores. Like me, you may have passed by this restaurant many times and never stopped in to check it out. Well next time down, you might just want to check it out. Papa-Rocco s has been in operation since Their motto is The home of warm beer and lousy pizza. With a motto like that setting your expectations, you will likely be pleasantly surprised. In 2010, this restaurant was named Peoples Choice Best Pizza. The restaurant is actually an oyster bar and pizzeria. They were voted the Peoples Choice Award for Best Raw Oysters for 8 years straight. Our family stopped in at lunch time. I enjoyed the French Onion Soup which has some very stringy cheese on top. It came with a large piece of garlic bread. I followed that up with a half dozen Cajun Oysters. This was definitely a great choice. I love baked oysters, especially with cheese. These were prepared with Cajun seasoning, mozzarella and parmesan cheese. Baked French Onion Soup The menu listed several baked oyster dishes including Oysters Rockyfeller. It also included Royal Reds (shrimp) and Snow Crabs. Cajun Baked Oysters My Son in Law,Patrick, really enjoyed the Seafood Pasta which is made with shrimp, scallops, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes and broccoli in Alfredo sauce over noodles. He said it was really good. Seafood Pasta Page 22

23 Dining on The Road Papa-Rocco s, Gulf Shores, Alabama Papa-Rocco s has an assortment of burgers and sandwiches to choose from. Daughter Kathleen had the Philly Beef Steak sandwich with green peppers, onions and Swiss cheese. Philly Beef Steak Sandwich The pizza was cheesy and a big hit. The menu is varied and has something for everyone s tastes. There are lunch specials during the week which may include chicken pot pie, pork chops, meat loaf, hamburger steak or blackened fish with rice and veggies. If you want more than food, Papa-Rocco s has live entertainment seven nights a week featuring local artists. Sometimes the featured artist are national recognized names. There is never a cover charge. Papa-Rocco s offers free wireless Internet, sports on 8 HD plasma TVs with surround sound and a full menu until midnight. Papa-Rocco s is located on Highway 59 (Gulf Shores Parkway) at 6th Street. This is on the West side of the street just about 1/4 mile from the Gulf of Mexico. You can call them at or check them out on the web at: Dine in or takeout this restaurant is definitely one the locals visit and that is a always a good sign. Doug Frey Page 23

28 Practice Part I Quantity vs. Quality By: Paul L.P. Giambrone, III Throughout my years in skeet shooting, I have heard the following questions over and over again and they still come up to this day: What do you practice? Should I shoot regular rounds of skeet or just certain stations? How many rounds of doubles should I shoot compared to singles? Is there a magic formula that everyone should follow? I am sorry, but I truly believe that there is no magic formula that everyone should follow because every shooter is different and has different needs. In Practice Part 2, I will tell you the schedule that I follow and that I recommend. The time spent on each stage will be different for each shooter, depending on your level. Before we engage in that conversation, I would like to discuss the subject of quantity of practice vs. the quality of the practice. Both are very important aspects of shotgun shooting and practicing for whichever discipline you participate in. However, there is a fine line between just burning up x amount of rounds and saying yep, I shoot 50 boxes a week and actually getting a good practice when you go to your gun club. Let s take a closer look at some of the pros and cons associated with this subject: Quantity of Practice: Pros: Builds muscle memory (only good with proper form) Can build confidence (if you shoot well) See plenty of targets Helps develop target acquisition Cons: Has tendency to create lazy habits Promotes going through the motions Don t really learn anything from mistakes Don t accomplish any objectives We can take a closer look at the concepts above. The basic pros of shooting a lot of practice include building the muscle memory and seeing a lot of targets. However, if you do not have proper form, building this muscle memory can make it difficult to overcome bad habits later. This is why it is always good to have an instructor keep an eye on you or have one of your shooting buddies watch you. Page 28

29 Practice Part I Quantity vs. Quality (Continued) Seeing plenty of targets helps your eyes focus more efficiently on the target which helps with target acquisition. Your eyes are your best tool because without being able to see the targets well, you are not really giving yourself a good chance at breaking targets. When I mean see the target well, I mean to see definition on the target (meaning don t just see an orange object flying across the field, see the rims on the target or if you shoot black rim targets, try and see the black and the orange). How many times have we heard the saying there is a difference between listening to someone and hearing someone? When you hear someone, there is a possibility that you aren t listening. How many times in the middle of a long conversation does your mind drift off and you miss two or three sentences? You still heard the person, but you weren t listening to what they were saying same thing with looking vs. staring. You can look at a target and see it, but rarely do we STARE at a target. Try that out the next time you go to the gun club. Try staring really hard at the targets and see Your Foundation for Perfect Skeet with Paul Giambrone, III is available for purchase! The DVD shows you how to build a solid foundation for your skeet game and also helps shooters troubleshoot some common problems they may face. You can order the DVD now for only $59.95 plus shipping! Please info@gsclinics.com to order your DVD today! them very well before pulling the trigger instead of casually looking at the target as it crosses the field. I promise not only will you break more targets, but you ll break them harder than you normally break them. Back on target here, the cons of this type of practice are very significant. This has a tendency to create habits of just going through the motions to break targets. This is the worst habit to develop because we miss targets each year from not paying attention and just casually shoot at targets. It also happens to be the easiest habit to form. Take a look at how many base line targets (stations 1, 7 & 8) and incomers Page 29

30 Practice Part I Quantity vs. Quality (Continued) (Low 2 & 3, High 5 & 6) that you miss in a year. I bet that number is pretty significant if you do not pay attention and stare at those targets. Those are the targets that cost us big, not the out-going difficult shots.. Available soon for $59.95 plus shipping. To pre-order info@gsclinics.com for more information. Getting in to this habit usually produces sporadic misses and not consistent misses or missing the same targets. When we go out to the field and are just banging away, we also have a tendency to not have a clue what station we are on or what target we are about to shoot. It is very easy to line up for a High 3 expecting to see a High 4 come out or line up for a Low 5 expecting a Low 6. This is a common occurrence for shooters not having a purpose or a reason to be out there besides to just hear the guns go BANG! Sorry guys, if you want to be a better shooter and break more targets, we need to put a little more effort in to our shooting game. Let s start to talk about how to fix this issue of going through the motions and shooting as many rounds as you possibly can. It all starts by realizing that the QUALITY of the practice is far more important than the QUANTITY of the practice. The quality of the practice all starts with having an objective when going out to the gun club. No matter how simple or complex the objective may be, it is always better to have some kind of objective. Some of the complex examples include: working on a pre-shot routine, staring at targets, doubles, mental preparation and execution, tournament-like conditions, etc. These kinds of objectives take time to work on and are pretty much an ongoing item to keep working on your entire shooting career once you have the fundamentals and basics down to a science. Some of the simple objectives are keeping your head down, waiting on the target, foot position, hold points, look points, etc. When all else fails, work on simple things. When you have a clear mind and are truly ready to work on a hard task, work on the more complex items. Keep in mind when learning anything new, there is a training period that we all have to go through. Think back to the early days when you first started shooting and everyone would always tell you keep your head down. How many times did we all hear that phrase before it finally settled in and we didn t have to think about it anymore? Probably heard it over a thousand times! Page 30

31 What about another classic phrase wait until you see the target before you move? Probably still hear it today! The point that I am making is that one day after all of that training time of keeping your head down or waiting on the target, we finally were able to do it without having to constantly think about it. Any time we work on new things in skeet or in life, we all have to train first before we can properly execute it all of the time in our sub-conscious mind. So, when you go out to the gun club, have an objective when going to practice no matter how complex or simple the task at hand is. You will find yourself shooting better and better working on individual things rather than just going to shoot x amount of boxes. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me via at info@gsclinics.com. As always, for more information please visit Tip of the month: Stare hard at the targets when going to practice. Do not casually look at them as. they cross the field but stare a hole in the target. See how much harder you break the targets and how much better you see them. Also, have an objective when going to shoot practice don t just show up, take up space, shoot 10 rounds and leave. Work on simple things if necessary ex. Keeping your head down, waiting on the target, etc. No matter how simple it is, work on it. Have an objective before going out to practice. When the hysterical shrieking had finally subsided, I found out that she was referring to my credit card. I have been asked to shop elsewhere in the future.
