A Word From The Publisher According to Wikipedia, Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration held on May 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.. It sounds to me like an excuse to have a party and eat some good Mexican food. Or in, my case, Tex-Mex. Happy Cinco de Mayo! We want to thank Andy Schuppert for sending us photos and a report on the fun had at the St. Patrick s Day Open at the Tulsa Gun Club. Read about it in this issue. If you would like to share a report from your club about your shoots, please send us a write-up and photos. Help our readers learn about just how much fun you are having. We also have shoot reports from the 12 gauge Marathon at Bridgeview Gun Club in Port Allen, Louisiana and the Lucky Open at the Toby Bancroft Memorial Gun Club in West Monroe, Louisiana. Thank you Raymond Haik, M.D, for sending us the write-up for the Lucky Open. Don t forget to send us your Skeet Shoot Flyers. We have a page dedicated to that on our website and we are happy to help you promote your shoots. Until we meet again in these pages or on the Skeet field, I am wishing you sunny days on the Skeet field and 8. Happy Cinco de Mayo! Doug Frey Page 2

HAT SHOOT EVENT Congratulations to Steve Mintz who shot his first 25 straight in 20 Gauge at the Lucky Open on April 14, 2018 at the Toby Bancroft Memorial Gun Club in West Monroe, Louisiana. Page 4

HAT SHOOT EVENT The shooting sports have a tradition that does not appear to be replicated anywhere else, The Hat Shoot Event. Since most of our readers shoot clay targets and many compete in Skeet, Trap or Sporting Clays, most of them know about this tradition. It started long before I started shooting Skeet and I have not yet determined the origin of this tradition. If you know, please enlighten me. For those who do not know, the first time a shooter shoots 25 straight or 50 or 100 straight, his or her shooting friends want to shoot their hat to celebrate. Some clubs have prohibited this practice for safety reasons. Others celebrate it and you will find lots of shot up hats hanging on the walls or from the rafters. Each hat usually has the name of the shooter, the number of targets being celebrated and the date. Most of the clubs (if not all) I shoot at in Louisiana celebrate shooters successes in this manner. Some clubs have implemented some common sense safety rules to protect every one. Here are the rules I use when hosting Skeet shoots. 1. All celebratory hat shoots are held at the end of the shooting day after the competition and the shoot-offs end. This allows all who are interested to participate and/or watch in a safe and controlled manner. 2. The shooters are lined up across the field and are instructed to load only two shells. You may have to direct the shooters as to where to stand for best photographic and safety results. I find that laying down the pull cord can help with that. 3. The shooters are instructed to only shoot the hat in the air when it is thrown. Absolutely no shooting of hats on the ground is allowed. 4. The celebrating shooter, who shot their first straight, puts 3 clay targets in their hat and folds the bill under the back strap to keep it together. I recommend using clay targets and not rocks. 5. The shooter stands behind the line of shooters and pitches the hat underhanded up and over the heads of the shooters as high as they can, but with an arc that places the hat well out in front of the shooters. 6. Since I am taking pictures with my camera on automatic fast setting, I position myself 15 or 20 feet behind the shooters and crouch down and can press the button down to take multiple pictures which include the shooters and the hat being hit in the background. 7. The celebrating shooter is instructed to pitch the hat on my call of Pull. 8. Don t forget to turn on the camera! If you have pictures of a Hat Shoot Event, please send them to us. We love to share success stories! Doug Frey Page 5

St. Patrick s Day Open The Oklahoma Skeet season officially kicked off with the Winter Freeze event at the Tulsa Gun Club and the Cold Duck at the Oklahoma City Gun Club. Our first 3 day event, the St. Pats, was in Tulsa March 23, 24, 25. We always wonder what kind of mixed bag of weather will roll in for a shoot this time of year and we certainly had that mixed bag! We were well represented for this shoot with shooters from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Wisconsin, Mississippi, and finally Wyoming. There were about 30 shooters for the doubles, 70 for the 12 gauge, and 50 for the 4 guns. We thank all those who attended and braved the weather. The doubles event on Friday gave us sustained winds of mph and gusts to 30 plus. Logan Beard was Champ, Wayne Kidd Runner Up, and Brad Goodart 3 rd. Pictured above are, Daniel Terrill, Casey Marshall, Mark Terrill, Brad Goodart (Referee) and Bethel Terrill Page 7

St. Patrick s Day Open The 12 and 20 gauge on Saturday had near perfect weather in the mid 70 s with the sun shining; it looked and felt like the beginning of shorts season. Craig Wasson ran a perfect 100, Runner Up was Troy Gordon, and 3 rd went to Paul Friesen. The 20 gauge in the afternoon also saw a perfect 100 from Craig Wasson and Paul Friesen with Paul winning the shoot off; Paul Bubba Clayton finished in 3 rd. For Sunday the weather took a 180 degree turn, the shorts and sun were gone and the jackets were on followed by rain gear. There was a threat of rain in the AM but the afternoon produced plenty. After numerous lightening delays the.410 was shortened to 50 targets only. A few went home, but almost everyone stayed. The 28 gauge had two perfect scores, Wayne Kidd and Paul Friesen with 100 s. After the shoot off, 1 st went to Wayne, 2 nd to Paul and Craig Wasson in for 3 rd. The.410 was won by Craig Wasson with a 50/50, Paul Friesen in 2 nd and Andy Schuppert in 3 rd. Wayne Kidd and Referee Chad Yoder Pictured below are John Beardslee, Van Lewis, Donna Flemming, Gary Fleming, Referee Tes Decker and Ray Vaslavsky. Page 8

St. Patrick s Day Open HOA became a 350 event with Craig Wasson 348/350!! Excellent shooting Craig! Runner up was Paul Friesen and 3 rd went to Wayne Kidd. Special thanks to all the referees that endured the ever changing weather and still managed to pull fantastic targets. See the scores at: Congratulations to Dirk Anderson [pictured below] for his guess of 208 shells in the Leprechaun s hat. There were actually 209 in the hat and that got Dirk the flat of shells. Tulsa Gun Club puts on an excellent shoot; targets were great and the food was good as always. You can follow us on Facebook at Oklahoma State Skeet Association for shoot flyers and upcoming events. 12 Bridge View Gun Club 12 Ga. Marathon Bridgeview Gun Club located at 1365 Northwest Dr., Port Allen, LA hosted its first registered Skeet shoot on Saturday, March 31, While the club is new, it is physically located on property directly behind the West Baton Rouge Parish Jail and previously operated as Hunter s Run Gun Club for many years. The facilities at Bridgeview are being refurbished. A lot of progress has already been seen. The club house has had a facelift, inside and out. Even the restroom facilities have been remodeled. I tried out the sink and hot water came out of that spout. It is an interesting use of a whiskey barrel as a design feature. A new kitchen was built behind the club house. It contains a state of the art commercial grade refrigerator, freezer, oven and stove. This kitchen is built to cook. The club hosts a Skeet and Eat function every Thursday. They also host corporate and charity shoot events. Page 12

Bridge View Gun Club 12 Ga. Marathon The club offers two state of the art five stand clays and an 8 station walking sporting clays course. There are two trap fields open on Skeet overlay fields. The club has three functioning Skeet fields. The club has a rifle/pistol range available for use by members. Phillip Carney, Jacob Moore, Carter Royston, Mark Harlan and John Bert Wintz Page 13

Bridge View Gun Club 12 Ga. Marathon For this shoot, two Skeet fields were used and one was open for practice. The club management has plans to replace the existing Skeet houses with new ones with a stone finish. For the time being, they are using the old wooden houses, but with brand new Lincoln traps. Currently, the machines are battery operated. When the new houses are constructed, the plans are to convert to 110 volt AC. The controls for the machines are wireless, so there were no cords to trip over or drag. I did not notice any delay in target release, by either referee. While the machines were operating on battery power, I can report that the targets thrown for me were excellent. It was a beautiful Spring day with blue skies and a nice breeze. It started out cool and warmed up to just perfect. While there was some wind, most of our targets flew true. Matthew Lorio, David Warren, DDS, Doug Frey and David Lansou Page 14

Bridge View Gun Club 12 Ga. Marathon David Hebert, Donald Cain, Christian Bergeaux, Brennan McNamee. Wayne Tanner and Gene Saizon Brennan McNamee and LSSA President, Wayne Tanner posted 196s and Brennan won the shootoff taking Champion Honors. Third Place was claimed by 14 year-old, Sub-Junior, Jacob Moore from Lafayette. Jacob posted a 194. David O Quinn [pictured on the right] was our Shoot Manager and he handled his part well. There were 19 contestants there to check out this facility and to enjoy the terrific weather. Dave invites you to shoot their 20 Gauge Marathon on May 26 and the Baton Rouge Open August 17th - 19th. 20 Cheerios? My good friend, Gene Saizon, from South Louisiana told me about a new load he was using for 20 Gauge. Gene actually gave me 25 AA 20 Gauge shells he loaded with 5/8 ounce of number 9 shot to try out. I have heard of folks loading 3/4 ounce 20 gauge loads, but 5/8 is only 1/8 of an ounce away from a.410 load. I took those shells at to Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club and tried them out. Wow! I shot 24/25 and the breaks were really good. The one I missed was the fault of the Indian, not the arrow. Recognizing that this new load might appeal to those who are looking for less recoil and an economical solution, I asked Gene to share his recipe with our readers and here is his response: Hello Doug, Glad you enjoyed the 5/8 oz. loads. They are a lot of fun to shoot and it's amazing how well they break targets. I got the recipe from the Alliant reloader's guide. The recipe calls for: WAA 20 gauge hull Win 209 primer 14.5 grains Green Dot (25 bushing in my MEC Sizemaster drops 14.5 grains consistently) CB , CB , or WAA20 wad 5/8 oz. charge bar Place a Cheerio (that is correct) on top of the shot to get a good crimp This load is sub 10k psi. Have fun. Gene I asked if the Cheerio was regular or Honey Nut variety. Gene says the regular works well. The Cheerio has the added benefit of being eco-friendly. I suspect there will be a run on Cheerios at the Super Market when the word gets out. Maybe Skeeter should buy some General Mills stock. Doug Frey Page 20

Lucky Open Old shooters, new shooters, young people, old people, red necks, damn Yankees, and a full squad of Kaplanders shot with us at the Toby Bancroft Memorial Gun Club for a five gun shoot. We shared the club with the trap shooters (35 participants) Saturday. No one was shot and no fights were observed on any day. Light rain and threat of light rain Friday and Saturday did not slow or delay the meet. A Friday night tornado missed my house by half a mile and knocked out our grid electricity for a few days but did not affect the gun club. (Automatic propane generator for your home is highly recommended to all by my wife). Sunday was clear and breezy. Friday April 13, seven shooters defied superstition and shot doubles. Charles Richardson and Wayne Tanner used their skill to win Doubles and place second respectively. Some of us seemed lucky to hit anything. Doug Walker, Raymond Haik, Referee, David Hall, Bill Schodlatz and Wayne Tanner Page 23

Lucky Open 12 Gauge Specialist Wayne Tanner came through for another Championship on Saturday morning. The usual suspects, Doug Walker and Charles Richardson, won second and third. Charles had to defeat a new young star from South Louisiana, Jacob Moore in a shoot off to get Third. Richard Desadier s time spent shooting with his children paid off with a 93. Steve Mintz, Justin Desadier, Referee and Richard Desadier Page 24

Lucky Open After fried and smoked chicken with potato salad and beans lunch, we shot the 20 Gauge Event. Beverly Walker and Karen Haik A lack of naps did not seem to hinder our shooting. Our local child star, Kyle Schaffer, got within one bird of tying Doug Walker, the 20 Gauge Champ. Wayne Tanner got past Charles Richardson in a shot off for third. Burt Hoffpauir, Jacob Moore, Referee, Ronald Leger, Roland Thibodeaux and Gene Saizon Page 25

Lucky Open David Hall awoke Sunday too sick to shoot and returned to Arkansas. Burt Hoffpauir got sick of us, with cause, and returned to Kaplan after shooting the 28 Gauge Event. Kyle Schaffer was sick of second place enough that he won the 28 Gauge Championship in a shoot off with Charles The Hammer Richardson. Wayne Tanner and Owen Wright answered the shoot off call for 3rd with Wayne winning. A third shoot off had Bill McIntyre defeating Jacob Moore for C1. Our Sunday lunch was spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, garlic bread. Brownies, cake and real Donnie Sanders pralines was our dessert. Doug Frey, Charles Richardson, Kyle Schaeffer and Matthew Henson Page 26

Lucky Open Roland Thibodeaux outclassed the.410 competition with a 94. The North of I20 shooters, Wayne Tanner and Donny Sanders, tried to make it respectable with 92 s. Roland Thibodeaux Bill Schodlatz, Referee, Raymond Haik, M.D., Donnie Sanders, Doug Walker and Wayne Tanner Page 27

Lucky Open Owen Wright, Reed Dees, Steve Mintz, Bill McIntyre and Walter L. Williams, III After a year of marathons, I thought we were ready to have a 5 gun shoot. Great help, great wives, and typically tolerant, pleasant shooters made the shoot possible. How important a competent referee is to a match was reinforced to me. Needed field improvement was also noted. My ambition and plan is to have shoots improve. My biggest hope is that someone resembling Doug Walker will computerize this process. Food was provided by Karen Haik, Beverly Walker, Jean Schodlatz, Donny and Debra Sanders, and Johnette Mintz. Health nut Doug Walker brought breakfast each day. Page 28

Lucky Open David Hall has serious breathing issues - it was a real effort for him to shoot with us any this weekend. Troy Scallion had to miss this shoot because of serious set back with Pat. Wayne Tanner almost secretly has a serious disease which he has high hopes of getting cured. Prayers and good thoughts are always helpful. Raymond Haik Your are invited to shoot our.410 Bore Marathon on June 2. Page 29

Dining on The Road Baton Rouge, Louisiana is a great place to eat seafood. There are a lot of really good restaurants in the Capitol City where you can get some fresh and tasty meals. There are a lot of new places, but one on my favorite places to eat seafood is Drusilla Seafood. This place has been operating since 1982 and they have chef s that have been cooking there over 30 years. While researching for this article I found some posts on the Internet that spoke very highly of the food and service. I also found some negative posts. Opinions on any subject will vary. I have been eating at Drusilla Seafood once or twice a year for many years. I don t recall ever getting a bad meal or poor service. My most recent trip was no exception. I came into town on Friday evening about 6 PM and stopped off at Drusilla Seafood for dinner before heading to my hotel. The restaurant is not far from the hotel I was staying in and I had been thinking about what I wanted to eat since I left Shreveport. Drusilla Seafood has a wide array of seafood to delight your taste buds ranging from fresh oysters (raw, fried or chargrilled), shrimp, crab, fish and crawfish. There are po-boy sandwiches and salads. There are platters which can be fried or broiled. The grilled Red Snapper with crabmeat [see left] could be an excellent choice. One of the highly acclaimed dishes here is a seafood eggplant casserole. I have had that before and it was great. On this trip, I was thinking about their au gratin casserole dishes. They have Shrimp Au Gratin, Crabmeat Au Gratin and they have the Drusilla Au Gratin, which is made with crabmeat, shrimp and mushrooms with cheese and a wine sauce. 44 Dining on The Road When I arrived, they seated me [a party of one] in the main dining room. Looking around the room I noticed that most of the diners were older folks, like me and many older than me. I would imagine the later it gets the younger the crowd would be. At the table on my left a Vietnam Veteran [according to his hat] was enjoying about 3 pounds of boiled crawfish. I do not recall what his wife was eating. My waitress promptly brought me a plate of their delicious Hush Puppies. I ordered a cup of Seafood Gumbo and a Sensation Salad for starters. This little cup of gumbo was delicious and it had six meaty crab claws in it! I love Sensation Salads. For those who may not have had one, it is a simple lettuce salad that is reported to have first been served at a Baton Rouge restaurant named Bob & Jake s. The salad became the sensation of many restaurants in South Louisiana. Sensation Salad dressing is made with vegetable oil, olive oil, white vinegar, herbs, seasonings and grated Romano cheese. For the main course I ordered the Drusilla Au Gratin with a stuffed baked potato. It was as delicious as I remembered. I did not have room for dessert and I did not need it. Now, it was off to check into my hotel to get rested for the Bridgeview Gun Club s 12 Gauge Marathon. If you are in Baton Rouge and you want to check out Drusilla Seafood Restaurant, you can find them at 3482 Drusilla Lane, Suite D, Baton Rouge, LA Drusilla Seafood Restaurant is open Monday-Saturday from 11 AM to 10 PM and Sundays from 11 AM to 9 PM. You can check them out on the web at Doug Frey Page 44

Recipe of The Month Having teased you with the Dining on The Road article mentioning one of my favorite salads, the Louisiana creation we call Sensation Salad, it seemed only fitting that I share the recipe that Debbie and I have used for making our own Sensation Salads. The following recipe will make enough for six people. Ingredients: 4 cups ice-cold iceberg lettuce ½ cup of vegetable oil ½ cup of olive oil 2 tbsps. of lemon juice 3 cloves of garlic, minced and mashed 2 tbsps. white vinegar salt and black pepper to taste granulated garlic to taste 2 tbsps. of chopped fresh parsley 1 cup of grated Romano cheese Instructions: In a 1-quart jar with lid, blend the oils, lemon juice, minced and mashed garlic, white vinegar and season to taste using salt, pepper and granulated garlic. Cover the lid and shake extremely well. The dressing may be used immediately, but if you put it in the refrigerator overnight, the flavors will have more time to incorporate. You must shake well before serving as the oil and vinegar will separate. In a large serving or mixing bowl, toss the iceberg lettuce and parsley with dressing to coat well. Add Romano cheese and toss gently to incorporate. We substitute Parmesan cheese for the Romano, if we don t have any Romano. We keep a bottle of this dressing in our refrigerator. While the Sensation Salad does not usually have any tomatoes, I have seen it served with olives. I usually add croutons. Hey, it s your salad, you can put anything in it you want! Doug Frey Page 45
