1 SUMMARY OF MOVEMENT AND HABITAT USED BY TAGGED BROOK TROUT IN THE MAIN BRANCH AND NORTH BRANCH AU SABLE RIVER DURING SUMMER 2014 Data Submitted to: Anglers of the Au Sable Submitted by: Dr. Mark R. Luttenton Annis Water Resources Institute and Biology Department Grand Valley State University Allendale, MI
2 Efforts to understand and improve the quality of the Au Sable River have been ongoing since the 1930 s. In spite of this effort, it appears that brook trout, a native stream salmonid in Michigan, have been declining. Previous studies have evaluated brook trout populations relative to numerous ecological variables and have noted that the amount of large woody structure present in the Au Sable is positively correlated with brook trout abundance (Zorn and Nuhfer 2007). However, our understanding of how brook trout respond to habitat and/or habitat improvement is incomplete. During summer 2013, the Mason-Griffith Founders Chapter of Trout Unlimited conducted work projects to install wood structures in the Au Sable River above Grayling. Historically, woody structure in that region has been relatively limited. Similar habitat projects were planned for the North Branch Au Sable River by the Anglers of the Au Sable. In this project we identify the structures (natural or constructed) used by brook trout and quantify features of the structures that brook trout occupy. To do this, we used telemetry to collect data on the daily and seasonal movements of brook trout, their habitat preference, and their response to warm summer temperatures. This project will be used to inform future habitat improvement projects. The proposed project will include: 1. Tracking 20 brook trout simultaneously, 2. Tracking fish in the North Branch and mainstream of the Au Sable River system simultaneously, 3. Tracking most tagged fish throughout the summer and fall, 4. Quantifying the physical complexity of home-sites, 5. Quantifying the physical nature of nighttime locations and 6. Quantifying brook trout movement during warm weather The proposed project would complement a current brown trout telemetry study. During summer and fall 2014, we tracked a combined 17 brook trout in the Main Branch and North Branch Au Sable River. B. Objectives: The objective is to better understand brook trout habitat use in the Au Sable River; information which will form the basis of future habitat improvement projects and provides insight into the potential brook trout response to warming temperatures. Specifically, the goals of this project will be: 1) track the movements of brook trout in the Au Sable River system for approximately 7 months, 2) identify specific locations and habitats utilized by brook trout, 3) quantify the physical structure of habitat associated with brook trout home sites and movements, 4) quantify the physical nature of nighttime locations and 5) identify spawning sites utilized by tagged fish. 2
3 C. Results and Summary: 1. Tracking We were able to track 16 fish during the course of the study. We tagged a total of 20 fish, but 4 fish were not included in the results because the fish and tag were lost before a sufficient number of tracks were completed. Brook trout movement appears to be relatively limited. Average total distance moved by brook trout in the Main Branch Au Sable River was meters (792.9 feet). Brook trout tracked in the North Branch averaged meters ( feet). This includes movement during the fall spawning period. Although brook trout generally left day time sites during evening hours, they did not exhibit a regular movement pattern. Unlike brown trout, brook trout did not consistently move to a night time location, but tended to move to different locations. In addition, brook trout appeared to move more at night. 2. Identify Specific Habitat and Locations Brook trout averaged 1.7 day sites during the study. This suggests that most brook trout moved to a new day time site at least once during the study. Thus, brook trout exhibit less home site fidelity than brown trout. Brook trout did not regularly establish a night time feeding site. 3. Quantify the Physical Structure of Habitat Associated with Brook Trout Home Sites and Movements - Brook trout day time home sites were relatively shallow, but did provide relief from stream flow by reducing flow velocity (Table 1). However, day sites were moderately complex and generally located close to the bank (Table 2). Home sites close to shore may have been a response to groundwater discharge. Habitat size averaged 8.8 meters (29.0 feet) long and 4.5 meters (14.8 feet) wide. Overhead structure provided approximately 50% cover. 4. Quantify the Physical Nature of Nighttime Locations Brook trout were tracked to a variety of locations during the study. Locations included slightly deeper pools to shallow sandy runs with no cover. 5. Identify Spawning Sites Utilized by Tagged Fish Spawning movement appeared to occur during October. I have included detailed maps for each fish showing fish locations. Dates are included for reference; October dates typically indicate approximate spawning locations. D. Habitat Analysis The following tables provide physical measurements of habitats utilized by brook trout during summer The tables are generally arranged from upstream to downstream for both the Main Branch and North Branch Au Sable River. Information includes, stream branch, specific location (e.g., Batterson), a general habitat description, and measurements taken at the location. The following illustration shows the general protocol used for habitat assessment and the locations of measurements relative to each fish home site. 3
