VOLUME 1, ISSUE 10 Page 3 Hat Shoot Events In accordance with the long standing skeet tradition, squad mates celebrate William H. Bill McIntyre s first 100 straight in the 12 Gauge at Red Chute Shogun Sports Club by shooting his hat to smithereens. Bill, who is also known as Willie Winchester because of his admiration of Winchester Super X shotguns, actually shot this straight with a 20 gauge Browning 525. Like many shooters, Bill sometimes shoots 20 gauge shells in the 12 gauge events. After this performance, I believe we will call him Browning Bill. If you know someone who has had a Hat Shoot Event send us a picture and the details. Quintin T. Hardtner, IV shot his very first 25 straight in 12 gauge competition on September 12, 2009 at the Fall Open at Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club on Barksdale AFB. Here Quintin is pictured (on the left) with his Coach William H. Bill McIntyre (aka Browning Bill ) who had just shot his first ever 100 straight in the 12 gauge. Both men are holding what is left of their hats. Quintin Hardtner, IV & Browning Bill

Fall Open Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club, Barksdale, AFB The weatherman did his best to discourage participants in the Fall Open held at Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club on Barksdale AFB on September 12, I for one didn t let the weatherman deter me. After all, he had been promising rain all week and really didn t come through with most of those promises. On Friday morning our reservations were only two shooters shy of a full shoot. By Friday afternoon, several folks sent their regrets and more did likewise on Saturday morning. Yet, ten shooters did take a chance and their efforts were rewarded. Yes it did rain some, but not so much and the cloudy skies kept things cooled off on the Indian Summer day. The wind was not a factor and the machines threw some pretty darn good targets. As you saw, if you read the Hat Shoot Events section in this issue, several of our contestants shot personal bests this day. I know Qunitin Hardtner, IV and Bill McIntyre were glad they braved the weather. Both were skeptical but made the right choice and were rewarded. Bill McIntyre Breaks em All to Claim the 12 Gauge Champion Honors Bill s 100 straight earned him the 12 gauge Champion honors. His closest competitor was Trey Heusel who posted a 96 to take Runner-Up honors. The Champion Honors in the 28 Gauge Event were taken by Doug Frey who shot a 95. In the 28 gauge competition, Doug Frey claimed the Champion honors with a 95. Once again, Trey Heusel took the Runner-Up slot. That was no small feat considering some ammo malfunctions that plagued his performance. Trey ended up finishing the event with a borrowed gun. Page 4 RED CHUTE GAZETTE

The Schodlatz Tube Cleaning System In last month s issue we were pleased to provide tips on stock refinishing in an article written by William C. Bill Schodlatz of Ruston, Louisiana. I have known Bill for over 17 years. I first met him at Pine Hills Skeet & Trap Club in West Monroe. I went out to that club with some friends from work to shoot skeet. We all shot so poorly that none of the guys I came with wanted to come back. Since I was working in Monroe on Thursdays and Fridays, shooting skeet gave me something to do after hours on Thursday. One reason I came back to that club was the warm welcome I had received from the members. Bill Schodlatz was one of those who reached out to me, along with Carl Davis and Charles Richardson. There were others too. Over the years I have shot skeet with Bill and hunted ducks with him. He has been a good friend to me and to skeet, always being supportive of other clubs. Bill regularly rounds up a car full of guys and brings them to the shoots we hold at Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club. Now Bill is a very talented fellow with wood or metal. He shared these pictures of a cleaning system he uses for his tube set. Following is the Bill sent describing his cleaning system. Doug I am attaching a few pictures of the tube cleaning set up I started this year. It consists of a base, a tube that is sealed on the bottom and a lid for the top. My current design has a major flaw in that the lid is a slip fit and the cleaner is very volatile! You need a good fit and a gasket. I use a modified version of Ed's Red (Google Ed's Red to see the original). My brew consists of 1/3 ATF [automatic transmission fluid], 1/3 acetone, and 1/3 mineral spirits. The automatic trans fluid provides lubrication, a surfactant and a detergent. The two common solvents work on plastic wad residue. After a shoot I simply put the full set of tubes in my brew and let them soak. When I have some spare time I get them out and brush them out and wipe them down inside and out. The amount of crud I remove is amazing! Page 6 RED CHUTE GAZETTE

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 10 Page 7 The Schodlatz Tube Cleaning System (Continued) WARNING this stuff is very flammable! Do not store indoors or near an ignition source. These cable loops are for hanging a complete set of tubes. I stopped using them because I found it easer to just use my fingers but the stuff will dry your hands. The cleaning canister is made of type 304 bright annealed stainless. That is a very expensive stainless and it is total over kill. Any metal tube will work but plastic will be dissolved. If I had to pay for mine I would use common thin wall tubing. The problem with Ed's Red is that several ingredients are tough to find and not required for [sub gauge skeet] tubes. Just buying a quart each of ATF, acetone and mineral spirits will fill the tube twice. Searching out the other stuff is not required for a tube set and only serves to discourage potential users. I strongly recommend that you heed the warning of flammability of my brew or Ed's. This stuff is a fire waiting to happen. Bill In conversations with Bill, he advised that any plastic or paper labels you have on your tubes will be dissolved by the cleaning fluid. Bill also shared a picture of his best hunting buddy Beau playing with a snow goose toy as he works on his mental game for duck season. By: Doug Frey

Arkansas State Skeet Championships BLUE ROCK GUN CLUB NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR By: Hal Matthews The Setting With a weekend-wide forecast of no less than a 70% chance of thunderstorms an intrepid twenty-five participants elected to attend ASSA s Arkansas State Championship. While the number of entries were down all were expecting a weekend filled with shooting great targets while enjoying fine food, drink and camaraderie that host club Blue Rock has justifiably been renown through the years. The Doubles Event Upon conclusion of Friday s doubles event under non-rain conditions Arkansas own Captain Crunch Bill Dunkum garnered top honors outright with a score of 97. Runnerups were Missouri s sage of skeet, Tommy Moore and soon to be heard from a lot more during the weekend, Kim Crutchfield. Friday Evening After a pleasant cocktail hour, guests and participants were served skeet grub of chicken wings and a combo gumbo prepared by Hal Matthews. The gumbo (which breaks a few typical Cajun rules, but hey, try a red-neck Arkansas version anyway) recipe follows this shoot report. Bill Dunkum Doubles Champion Page 8 Helena Fazzino Lady Champ Rusty Hyde didn t miss a thing, but he was there. RED CHUTE GAZETTE

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 10 Page 9 Arkansas State Skeet Championships, Continued 12 Gauge After an eight year skeet lay-off Fast Eddie Wilson simply shoots a straight box of practice and then proceeds to shoot a 100. Kim Crutchfield matches the 100 and takes gun champ after Fast Eddie departs the scene shortly after running his 100 resulting in a 99 s out-of-state runner-up fest of Tommy Moore and Gary Matthews along with David Robustelli taking B-1. Kim Crutchfield 12 Gauge Champ, HOA & HAA 20 Gauge Harold Smith is running out of hats! He shot his 1st 100 straight in 20 gauge. Then he did it again in the 28 gauge. It was definitely worth the trip from Memphis for Harold. After a great lunch of burgers and dogs, which was donated by NSSA Board Member and Zone VI Executive Committee Member Wayne Black, it was back to shooting. Open Champion was Harold Smith from Memphis, TN with his first 100 and State honors going to Veteran Jim Finch after a blistering 99 s shoot-off with Kevin Gardenhire, Wayne Black and Kim Crutchfield. Big Saturday news, no rain! Saturday Evening After cocktails in which to celebrate an odd defying rain-free day, all enjoyed a Bar B-Q ribs, pulled pork and brisket dinner with all the trimmings.

Arkansas State Skeet Championships, Continued 28 Gauge The rain (albeit light) simply couldn t hold out any longer but that sure didn t bother Harold Smith who continued his Open winning ways by shooting his second first 100 of the tourney! Harold was running out of hats and the future prices of Blue Rock inventory were going up! Steven King took State Champion with the only other 100. Continuing on with great scores, Kim Crutchfield garnered runner-up with a 99. Rounding out the field were Tommy Reedy and Jim Finch with scores of Bore The light rain let up prior to the.410 event and the HOA was up for grabs. Steven King smoothed out a 98 for.410 Gun Champ and Kim Crutchfield taking Runner-Up with a close but no cigar 97. HOA/HAA Upon the conclusion of all events and the target chips, pieces and gnashing of teeth were fully considered, Kim Crutchfield took both HOA (395) and HAA (489) honors and accolades. It is of particular interest that Kim had not shot a registered target since last year s Arkansas State Championship and that says a lot! Runner-Up in both events was Steve King (393 & 484). Steve King 28 Gauge &.410 Bore Champion Also Runner-Up for HOA & HAA Conclusion This year the Arkansas State Championship was open to out-of-state shooters for the first time in many years and to those of you looking for a great semi-late season skeet tournament ASSA asks that you consider joining us next year on the 2 nd weekend of September. 16 Dining on the Road Joe s Dreyfus Store Restaurant Many travelers who have gone through Livonia on Highway 190 between Baton Rouge and Opelousas have dined at Joe s. It is one of those places that you just had to know about or you would have missed it. Located on Maringouin Road West (Highway 77 South) just about a quarter of a mile South of 190 along the banks of Bayou Gross Tete is the old Dreyfus Store which houses this restaurant. The store was built by cousins of Theodore Dreyfus, a native of Manheim Germany, who immigrated here shortly after the War of Northern Aggression. At that time, Bayou Grosse Tete was a main artery for commerce. The store was gathering place for people came to get provisions. In 1902 Theodore bought the business and with the help of his family built a thriving mercantile business which included an apothecary and a post office. In 1989, the store was turned into a restaurant by Joe and Diane Major. This restaurant was now operated by third and fourth generations of the Dreyfus family and was one of the oldest single family owned businesses in the state. In May of 2008, Bobby Webber and his sister, Linda Webber Ducote took over the operation of the restaurant.. I have enjoyed dining at Joes for many years. The new proprietors have continued the traditions that Joe and Diane Major started with their eatery. The menu continues to list all of the traditional Louisiana favorites that you might expect, including Oysters Bienville (one of my favorites), Oysters Rockefeller and Char-grilled Oysters. They also have gumbos, bisques, shrimp, alligator, fish, stuffed eggplant, seafood platters, pasta dishes, steaks, burgers and chicken dishes. Recently, they have added a buffet at lunch for about $11 and at dinner for about $26. If you are passing this way at meal time, stop by and put on the feed bag. Hunters Run Gun Club Port Allen, LA Doug Frey LAST CHANCE SHOOT CANCELLED! With regrets we must cancel the above shoot previously scheduled for October 24 and October 25. See page 1 for alternatives. 20 The Red Chute Gazette Puzzle #1 At the Red Chute Gazette we are always looking for things that might appeal to our readers. Now Debbie loves to work crossword puzzles. We subscribe to our local paper which rarely has anything in it we want to read. If they drop the crossword puzzle I suspect we will cancel the subscription. It occurred to me that we should create a crossword puzzle for our magazine. The following puzzle is made with skeet as the theme. Most answers are skeet terms, skeet shooters or people, places or things that somehow relate to our favorite sport. Some of the answers are found in this issue of the Red Chute Gazette. Your Records Annual or Rule Book will help with some of the answers. If you are stumped by the puzzle, send us an at dougfrey@bellsouth.net and we will send you the key. Good luck! Across 2.
