We have made Thistles which is the National flower of Scotland and looked at Scottish flags. We then coloured the flags in. Scotland! The children were shown the country they live in, England, and they were shown where Scotland is, which is right next to us! The children made Thistles using paper plates and their handprints. We spoke about how this flower is very important to Scotland. We also coloured in some Scottish flags and tried really hard to hold our pencils properly. We also danced to some highland music. The children on the video put on their Tartan kilts, made shortbread for their neighbour and went looking for Saints. The children chose which activity they would like to complete today. They could weave Scottish Tartan, collage a Scottish flag, colour in St Andrew s day colouring, make a thistle or write a Happy Andrew s Day card. We had good fun weaving and sticking! Tom Beardsmore To introduce St Andrew s Day, we discussed our knowledge of Scotland and all things Scottish! We were able to locate Scotland on a map and research Scottish traditions. We then watched a video clip showing St Andrew s life. In small groups, we used rolling drama to retell how Andrew became the Patron Saint of Scotland and why he is a significant figure in British History. We really enjoyed watching our video back. We used Ipads to research key questions to find out more about St Andrew. We shared our findings with the rest of the class to deepen our understanding. We used all of the information we had gathered to create an informative fact file all about the importance of St Andrew. What a fantastic day we had! St Andrew was the very first disciple! We drew a design in our art books using a ruler and pencil. We made the lines different thicknesses and thought about the different materials we wanted to use. Finally, we began to make our tartan. We used a range of materials including tissue paper, crepe paper, card and ribbon. They looked really effective and we had a great time making them. What a fantastic day we had! I really enjoyed creating a comic strip of the story of St Andrew, Fletcher. This week we have been celebrating the Patron Saint St Andrew. We started the week off with an assembly where we learned who he was. We were excited to learn about his life. We found out that he was crucified for sharing the word of Jesus. His bones were then taken from Greece to Scotland. They were looking for the end of the earth. On the spot where his bones were buried, they built a church. They then called the town St Andrew s. We went back to class and created our own comic strip of the story. The children really enjoyed writing the text and drawing the illustrations. We then learned about Scottish traditions by listening to bagpipe music and then even got to design our own family tartan. It was a really fun week enjoyed by all. Alex N After learning about St. Andrew, I thought he was a brave man who stood up for what he believed in. Sophie On Friday 2 nd December, Year 6 spent the day studying the patron saint of Scotland, St. Andrew. We began by learning the story of St. Andrew and attempting to re-write the story in exactly 200 words it was more challenging than we thought! Secondly, we used our IPADS and our skills of using search engines effectively to research and answer a series of tricky questions about the patron saint. During the afternoon, Year 6 spent some time designing our own quizzes using PPT and others began to create a stained glass piece of art depicting St. Andrew. It was a very busy and interesting day! It was interesting and difficult to research and find answers to some tricky questions about
