2 ~,~,,, Steady Eddie "I did ft and I'm glad :" Five years ago, Eddie didn't think he could afford insurance He was getting marrie d in a month and he needed all the money h e could get to make a start An AMP man showed Eddie that an insurance premiu m is not money spent but money saved and more Now Eddie has a policy that protects his family and protects his dollars Contact an AMP man today and hear how you can afford insurance and enjoy security Telephone or mail this coupon r I Tell me more about how I can afford AMP insurance LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS ORMOND, MONASH, TRINITY CAUSE UPSET S Geelong's First Win Since 194 By GEORGE MeTAGGART The spate of sensations in the opening round a fortnight ago continued last week when three of the A Section winners in the first round were beaten by teams which lost on the opening day Ormond, well beaten by De La Salle, turned round and toppled University Blues by six goals - Monash Blues, after an inglorious display against North Old Boys, beat Coburg by 21 points - and Old Trinity, who finished a long c~ia y behind the Blues, accounted for North Old Boys, the margin being 3 4 points- - De La Salle, who just held on long enough to beat University Blacks by a point, are now at the head of the list, St Bernard's, premiers last year, played an unregistered player against the Blacks in the opening match and so lost the four premiership points, otherwise they would be sharing the lead with De La Salle Geelong scored a 33-point win over St Kilda CBC, their first taste of victory since the 194 season Reservoir Old Boys Juniors, who kicked a record Junior score the previous week, were beaten last Saturday, going down to West Brunswick by points And their percentage crashed from 2446 to still not a bad per centage all the same Incidentally Thomastown's percentage quite naturally also dropped considerably despite another big win - from to Melbourne High again kicked a century score, but their 1-15 (11 points) fell 53 points short of Caulfield Grammar, who kicked (10) The week before High kicked 21-8 (134) to be beaten by 9 points University Blues Juniors, who put up a poor showing against North Old Boys (Section 2 premiers last year) repeated their Section I Grand Final win over Coburg, the margin being 4 goals Of the teams promoted this season, De La Salle, Fawkner, AJAX and North Old Boys Juniors are still unbeaten So too are Monash Whites, but their match against ANZ Bank last Saturday was not played because no umpire was available ~ Name Address State : P o s t c o d e AM P, 535 BOURKE STREET, MELBOURNE, Vic 3000 L624 Page J THE AMATEUR FOOT15ALLER - MAY 8, 196 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-MAY 8, 196 page 3

3 V H jection 90 UMPIRE'S CORNER By Kevin McKay "FITNESS" What are we striving for when we commence training the umpires at Elsternwick Par k We aim to develop and improve the general and specific components of fitness in order to maximise their performance when they are umpiring, Once again general and specific conditioning are both inter-related and combined with the most vital requirements of a field umpire - stamina and speed They are all brought together for the overall improvement of physical fitness and the final objective which is the correct performance response on the field It should be remembered that the development of one component of fitness will not guarantee the same response towards another component - For example If one is training to improve his strength by the appropriate training, he cannot expect th e same improvement to show in his cardiorespiratory fitness (Heart and Lungs ) Therefore the golden rule to remember is that "Training in Specific" Conseouently, training should be aligned as closely as possible to the task undertaken by the individual Every part of the body should be brought to efficient working level before specialised training is undertaken This level should be reached PRE-SEASON BEFORE arrival at ElsternwIck Park UNFORTUNATELY only a few umpires do PRE-SEASON WOR K Physiological functional improvements are brought about by correct training, but the organism tends to revert to it's former state once training is discontinued training th e longer mth e ore buil d slowly doe s brough the t about take place reversal Training to be effective must follow a plan and must be of regular intervals Training time must be concentrated and it must be in a situation which is not vitally different from what is required on the actual day Boredom after lengthy training periods is almost inevitable Therefore it is essential that changes be made from time to time within the training routine DO YOU KNOW? That one of the greatest goal kickers in the history of Australian Rules Football was East Fremantle Player George Doig In 1934 this great forward kicked 152 goal s season, durin n Australian senior g whh~inci Included 32 us i games in successive weeks, 19 of his club' s 22 the first week, and 13 out of 20 the following week a for DEast FremantlaouJuniorsin againstpl almyr oig scored every goal and every behind scored by his team "What would he *be worth today? " Last week we started our social year with a party at the home of Ron and Janice Lowe A huge crowd voted it a top night LAWS OF THE GAME RULE 1G - States that a free kick shall be awarded against a player who wilfully kicks or forces the ball out of bounds without it being touched by another player FULE 1E- A free kick shall be given against a player who wilfully wastes time A player with the ball may be fairly met by an opponent by the use of the hip, shoulder, chest, arms or open hands A player may be pushed in the chest or side or shepherded in accordance with these laws, by an opponent, provided the ball is not more than 5 metres away Umpires should at all times use common sense in their decisions WE'RE SHORT OF UMPIRES The Association is desperately shor t of umpires and urgently requires young men to take on this very important part of the game On the onening day, we only just managed to supply umpires to all games by using two members of the Umpire Committee, who have "retired" as umpires, and last Saturday the position was even worse, with one game having to be cancelled because of the shortage of umpires Anyone interested in becoming an umpire in the Association, whether he has had umpiring exnerience or not, is requested to contact the Secretary to the Umpire Committee, Mr Lynton McLeod, of 9 Mason Court, Highett 3190 His Phone number is The greatest need is for Field Umpires, but Goal Umpires are also required Payments range from $20 for those in Group 4, to $33 for Group 1 Goal umpires receive $14 Pava 4 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER- MAY 8, 8 cc civii PREVIEWING TODAYS GAMES F SECTION West Brunswick with the home ground A SECTION How much do I love those "Burgers" and De La Salle? Both clubs are going a long way towards turning a good tipster into a mumbling mess Nevertheless, I'll press on with the spirit of Christopher Columbus De La Salle, or literally translated from the French, Of The Room, have at last convinced me they are a good side and should keep Reservoir Old Boys out of the winning list for another week A good win against Coburg will have left Monash full of confidence but I must call St Bernard's the winners of their impending clash North Old Boys meet University Blues at home and familiar surroundings may be all that is necessary to bring them the points against the inconsistent students We are sure to have a drop of rain before Saturday, and when it comes, I'm sure that Coburg will account for Old Trinity who prefer the and conditions of the Richmond Desert Good on you Ian Cameron All new coaches need a win to vindicate themselves and you got yours with a vengenance last week It may be just enough to enable you to get Ormond over the line against University Blacks, in a close finish Anyhow, I'm attending my son's wedding and I probably won't even be able to read the results, so go for your lives top ten - Alf Keam B SECTION Collegians the new glamour team with a sensational last quarter win, John Butcher and Caulfield Grammar both prolific an d Old Scotch improve earlier than expected - MH S O B doing a North Melbourne but will soon succeed Consecutive losses to Melbourne High not warranted but will spur them on to break the ice against unbeaten Old Scotch Although Laurie Aghan will have other ideas Game prediction?? Caulfield Grammar look good in the score book but it is hard to see such improvement from last year although John Butcher is burning with 21 goals in 2 weeks Nevertheless th ey will hold out a determined home team Geelong Ivanhoe are too talented for Old Carey whose performance so far is too bad to be true and Ivanhoe will react to their unexpected defeat by Old Scotch Collegians experienced a football dream coming from 8 goals behind and this will prove to them they are never beaten and their enthusiasm and pace should too much for an up and down Marce lprl~ Old Paradians will benefit from their reversal last week and solid experience will account for a very disappointing St Kilda CBS O B who are however capable of better things - John Byrne C SECTION Kew opened their account last week and at home today should take out the points against U H S O B Parkside - you're tossed me the last two weeks however you're got my vote today against Power House Hampton Rovers and Old Melburnians will be very close - Melburnians are now combining well and I pick them to win by a narrow margin Fawkner at home to Old Halleybury could be the match of the day - a close tussle is ensured and I expect Old Halleybury to come out on top As Yet Alphington haven't shown us their true form and Old Ivanhoe G's in top form will win this one - Alex Johnson D SECTION Four out of five last week so I begin confidently today by predicting that the only undefeated sides, AJAX and Old Xaverians will make it three in a row when they beat Elsternwick and Old Brighton respectively It's good to see Old Xaverians on the come-back trail afater their rather speedy slide down a couple of sections Keep it up - that record of yours at Geelong still has not been broken! State Bank should return to the winning list by beating a team-building Brunswick while the other bank, National may not be so fortunate when they come up against Old Camberwell at Albert Park today Old Geelong and Assumption Old Collegians present a diffifficult one to forecast and without any great confidence I lean here towards Old Geelong which has the home ground advantage In conclusion, a note to the Editor, that perhaps a record could be kept of the winners we either select or fail to select for a token prize at the end of the season! - Jim Fidge This is being done - progress "scores" will be published from time time - Ed E SECTION If the bloke who picks the umpires can't do any better than one out of 5, th en the Findlay method deserves consideration, but I will perservere with judgment for this week at least Monash Whites to down the Comm Bank A M P to overcome LaTrobe Blacks, St Kevin's in their new rural environment to beat North Brunswick Old Mentone, having cracked it, should be able to do it again at the expense of our country cousins (St Pat's-Monivae) and I anticipate (hope?) that Heatherton will be able to justify their promotion by accounting for ANZ Bank and for the latters scores not being in my paper - Syd Whitfield advantage together with a more than enthusiastic band of supporters, will be too strong for University Reds Although Bulleen-Templestowe had a good win last week they will not be able to match St Bede's and will go down in a fairly close game Bulleen United will dispose of Thornbury in another close game and Footscray IT will have the advantage over Beverley Hills who will be suffering from travel fatigue before the game starts Glenroy will notch up their first win for the year by downing La Trobe University Reds - Keith Findlay JUNIOR SECTION 1 Two out of five last Saturday - th e odds-on favourite rolled - no wonder I have been transferred to Junior Section 1 Neverth eless we will try an d improve this week Although Hampton Rovers opened their account last week after opening the season with a forfeiture they do not appear strong enough to beat Ivanhoe Power House are at home to Monash University and I am tipping the visitors for another win Old Scotch have shown no form this year and University Blues can expect an easy victory North Old Boys are well on the way to their second successive Junior flag Although Ormond have the home ground advantage they will find North too strong, University Blacks are at home to Coburg in what should be the most even game of the round My choice is the home side - Peter Nathan To save Peter from any agony and anguish in having to make any decisions between loyalty and judgment, we have switched him to Junior Section 1 and Norm Nugent, who will have no qualms about tipping against St Bernard's if need be, is now previewing Junior Section 2 - Ed JUNIOR SECTION 2 A confident Thomastown have Old Paradians as their visitors Despite Peter Peyton's skillful coaching of Old Parade, I predict another big victory for Thomastown St Bernard's are hosts to the young boys from Kew Kew have struggled in their last two games and a third big win looks certain for St Bernard's Two sides from the Northern Suburbs in Reservoir Old Boys and Alphington meet at the Barling Reserve Despite their loss last week, Reservoir should defeat Alphington who are still struggling to settle down Two leading sides meet at Albert Park when West Brunswick journey to Caulfield Grammarians Form is hard to gauge but I'll go for West Brunswick who have played two difficult games and won each well De La Salle, aided by last week's victory, will travel to Geelong, hoping for their second win The Queen's Park ground proves difficult for visiting sides and a Geelong victory seems assured - Norm Nugent Club SLppIy ~ Barrels 0 Bottles 0 Cans 40 SOCIAL SECRETARIE S Don't miss this chance to obtain your Club's Beer & Liquor Supplies at prices to suit your finances With the cost of Football Administration rising every year you must buy right to boost your Club income Compare our prices Phone us now, or call in and see Bob Hemmings or Brian Lauder (22 years, aft! 10 H )ecnon LOOKING By Noel Rundle BACK 5 Years Ago It was 190 Grand Final all over again when Caulfield Grammarians held off a strong finishing bid by Coburg to win by 2 points - some magic and same circumstances as the last Grand Final Atchison, Clark and Lester continued their fine form for Grammarians with Sullivan, Jim Sabri and Douglas best for Coburg Closest 'B' Section game was Old Carey's (91) defeat of Ivanhoe (90) with Old Carey kicking 45 to 04 in the final term Thomas, Freeman and Elliott (Old Carey) and Berry, McMahon (5) and Phillips (Ivanhoe) were the best players U H S O B welcomed back 'Nats' Nettleton after three years in Canada Eccles (8, goals) was the star in Park-side's high-scoring win over Old Geelong (128) to (95) 10 Years Ago Ivanhoe paid tribute to Russell Burt who after 240 games with the 'Hoes, had been forced into retirement with a badly broken arm 'Rusty' was a member of Ivanhoe's 'A' Section premier team in 195 and won an All Australian blazer in 1958 Frank Dunin (Uni Blacks) had been appointed coach of the team to play in Adelaide while John Wilson (Caulfield Grammarians) will be in charge of the team to go to Tasmania MHSOB retained their place at the top of the list with a sound win over Coburg, scores 1514 (104) to 108 (68), Best for the victors were Moller, Trish, J Nelson, and for the losers, Warfe, Shea, Beattie University Football Club were celebrating their centenary this year and to mark the occasion, the Inter-Varsity carnival was to be held in Melbourne Elsternwick's Jock Sellars chalked up 150 games with the club (and is still with the club as an official - Ed) MILESTONES AT ST BERNARD'S Congratulations to John "Speed" Fox o n playing his 100th game with St Bernard's today "Foxie" started with our juniors in 1969 and captained the premiership side that year He graduated to the seniors the following year and his size and ruck skill have helped the club on many occasions His accurate shooting for goal has become a real legend at St Bernards This year he has shown the same determination as before and seems set for a successful year Ralph Bourke one of Ivanhoe Reserves consistent players gets married today Actually while you're reading this report take a look at the Reserves game and you'll see him out there plugging away for the team We hope and I'm sure Mary his financee, hopes that he comes out of the game fit At 6 30 tonight Ralph and Mary will be married at Luke's Restaurant, Carlton, and will be heading off to the far east for 3 weeks Ralph has played 12 games and is a great organiser on the social scene and his financial wizardry amazes us at times All at Ivanhoe wish Ralph and Mary a great future together and hope that in 3 weeks' time we'll see number 18 back on the field for the 'Hoes opening roun d We are sure that all players and supporters of Old Haileybury would like to congratulate David Norton on playing his 5th game for the club in the opening round this season You may wonder what is so special in that! Well, nothing really, except that his 56th game was played in Round 5, 196 It is interesting to note that, of all the players who played on that day with David, Dick Metherall is the only one still playing Welcome back to the fold David May your comeback be successful for yourself and the club IVANHOE PLAYERS' MILESTONE Three Ivanhoe players reach certain targets today Vic Harris, the elusive flash at full-forward in the Reserves, plays his 100th game with the club His ability to read the game has opened up our forward line immensely and he creates many opportunities for others David Steen and Glenn Stewart notch up their 50th games today Glenn was captain of the juniors last year and with this experience behind him I'm sure we'll see a lot of him in the future David Steen's high-marking game has turned the tide for us many times and with this attribute we can look forward to many more outstanding games from him Well done fellas 25 Years Ago Ormond last year's premiers, were annihilated by Commonwealth Bank (last year's 'B' Section premiers) with final scores being 110 (112) to 2 6 (18) Hampton Rovers, 5 14 (56) beat Ivanhoe 11 (41) in a close hard fought game to stay in the 'A' Section four Doug Arnold was great in the centre while John Whitfield last week played his 50th Keith Embleton scored a splendid goal from game for Alphington John like his father the boundary Kevin Clarke, Bill Clarke, is a backman, and we all hope he continues and Ron Rosenburg were best for 'Hoes to give the same fine service as did Syd It was "Black Saturday" at Corio Oval Bulleen United's Greig Nanscawen represented the club for the 50th time last week for S S B when the home side Geelong scored 9 goals on the board before Bank Greig has been with us since 193 and has scored their first Matheson, McPhee, Ferguson, for Geelong and Hill, Gellatty and A spectacular mark and a good kick Bulleen played mostly on the half-forward flank Grubb, for Bank were best hope he's around for at least another 50 games P -VW 20 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-MAY 8, 196 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-MAY Page 21 A SECTION Tyquin, Univ Blues (3) Murray, North O B (2) Handley, Coburg (6) Hindle, Univ Blues (3) Moffatt, Un Blacks (3) Williams, O Trinity (6) Smith, Old Trinity (4) Groves, De La Salle (4) Burne, Un Blacks (3) Curtin, Mon Blues (4) Fox, St Bernard's (4) Ray Wood, Ormond (4) Boyd, Coburg (2) B SECTION Butcher, Caul Gr (11) Jones, Marcellin (8) Martin, MHS OB (5) Jordan, Old Parad (6) A Jones, Ivanhoe (5) Drinan, St K CBC (4) Silberberg, MHSOB (2) Marx, Old Scotch (5) Tootell, Caul Gram (3) McMahon, Ivanhoe (2) C SECTION Urquhart, Old Melb (10) Bouris, Old Hailey (6) McMahon, UHS OB (6) Bastow, Parkside (5) Green, Parkside (8) Rowland, Kew Roberson, O Melb (1) Flavel, UHS OB (2) Nash, Hamp Rov (3) Upton, Pwr House (4) D SECTION Holmes, O Brighton (12) Brosnan, Old Xav (8) O'Neill, Old Xav (4) Gross, AJAX (3) Naughton, Old Xav (4> Bluzer, AJAX LEADING GOALKICKERS Wiener, AJAX (2) 6 Grace, Elsternwick (3) 6 Gorey, Assumption (4) 6 Jones, O Brighton (5) 6 Shannon, E SECTION St Pat's-M (6) Mahar, St Pat's-M (3) Speers, Old Ment (2) Norton, Old Merit* (3) Sauer, Mon Whites Frazer, Com Bank (I) Wyatt, Cwlth Bank (1) Sarapuu, COm Bank (3) Dancer, ANZ Bank Marsden ANZ Ban k M Killen, Heatherton (-) F SECTION Watson, Foots IT (9) 16 Gibson, Bev Hills (6) 14 Kenny, Univ Reds (5) 12 White, West Bruns (6) 12 W Brockwell, W Bk (4) 11 J Ryan, West Bruns (3) 10 Allen, St Bede's (8) 10 Dawson, B-Tstowe (5) 8 R Brockwell, W Bk (2) 8 Beaumont, W Bruns (3) 8 JUNIOR SECTON 1 Godfrey, North OB (6) 14 Sloan, Mon Univ () 12 Walton, Mon Univ (3) 9 Woolcock, Un Blacks (-) 8 Cules, Mon Univ (6) 8 S Johnson, Ivanhoe (4) Keys, Univ Blacks (2) 6 Stevenson, Ivanhoe (3) 6 Creaser, Mon Univ (3) 6 JUNIOR SECTION 2 Czerny, Thomastown (12) 25 Romeo, Resvr OB (4) 22 McGaw, Resvr OB (2) 1 6 v,a Covers your world BRANCHES: MELBOURNE FRANKSTON OAKLEIGH PRESTON R Caruso, W Bruns (5) 15 Strugnell, C Gram (6) 10 Powell, St Bern (3) 10 Botting, Thomastown (4) 9 Hitchcock, Caul Gr (5) 8 Truefeldt, Res O B (2) 8 A RESERVE SECTION Templar, Un Blues (3) 9 Mitchell, De La Salle (3) 8 Considine, St Bern (4) 8 Foulsham, Ormond () Dorizzi, D L Salle (2) 6 B RESERVE SECTION Dean, Collegians (4) 11 J D Gregory, Marc (5) 9 Ferguson, Coll'gns (6) 9 Morgan, MHS OB (3) Newton, Collegians (4) C RESERVE SECTION R Poyntz, Parkside () 15 Ferguson, Fawkner (-) 9 McQueen, O Hailey (2) Chilcott, Parkside (3) 6 S Wilson, Old Melb (3) 6 D RESERVE SECTION Fraser, Old Xav Bellmaine, O Bton (j Unkles, Old Xav ' (5) E RESERVE SECTIO N P Skinner, Heathton (8) 11 May, ANZ Bank (5) 9 Borg, Heatherton (2) 8 Walsh, St Pats-M (4) F RESERVE SECTION G J Ford, Glenroy (5) Dagg, West Bruns (3) 6 Condon, West Bruns (-) 6
