1 Newsletter Friday 23rd February 2018 All Learning Together Tel: Dear Parents, We are still waiting to see more signs of Spring appear and with snow in the forecast for next week, we all have our fingers crossed that school will be able to carry on as normal as we have a lot going on. As you know, next week is World Book Week. There is a reminder in this newsletter about our Langton and Leavening joint book day on Wednesday 28th February and don t forget that on Thursday, children are invited to come into school dressed as their favourite story character. As you can see from the photos, our children thoroughly enjoyed the FoLS Disco we had before the half term holiday. Our next FoLS event is the Chocolate Bingo, for which there is a new date of Wednesday 28th March, between 5.00pm and 6.00pm. On this note, we are grateful to Vicky Pears, mum of Thomas in Class 1, who has set up our new Friends of Langton Facebook page. If you are on Facebook, please do Like the page. It is a forum where we will be able to advertise upcoming events. Also in this newsletter is information about our new Langton book bags. If you would like one, please see Sam. We are really pleased with the quality of them. Please do remind any friends who may have pre-school age children, our Stay and Play sessions still run on a Wednesday morning from 9.30 to 11.30am. It would be great if we could increase our numbers so I would be grateful if you could help us advertise it far and wide! Meanwhile, our Breakfast and After School Clubs remain very popular. This week we have had a meeting to discuss our provision at After School Club. Many of our sessions are now fully booked, therefore in order to ensure that you secure a place and to vastly help with the administration of the club, we require parents needing places at the club confirm with Sam the Friday before the week in question. Once a place is confirmed, the place will be charged to your ParentPay account. If, in the event of sickness, your child does not require the place, no charge will be levied however, last minute changes will still require payment as places are taken up, preventing other children having a place who might otherwise need one. If there are any changes to your After School Club requirements, please do make sure that Sam is aware so that our records can be updated. After Easter, we are changing our payment system for After School Club slightly in that we will be charging a week in advance as opposed to in arrears. This will help significantly with administration time. Next week, I will be advertising for a new member to join our After School Club team. With the increasing popularity of our club, we will be looking for someone else to join Mrs Cuthbertson and Mrs Cogger. We are very proud of our After School Club and know that children really enjoy going to it. My thanks go to Emma and Vicky for doing such a wonderful job in running the Club. 2 Attendance The figures for the past fortnight are; Reception: 99.0% Year 1: 99.3% Year 2: 98.4% Year 3: 96.8% Year 4: 95.4% Year 5: 95.1% Year 6: 88.9% Well done to Year 1 for having this fortnight s best attendance figures! In the Swim! Tuesday 6th February, a very busy day of sport, was started with a trip to Derwent Pool, where our KS2 swimmers... On Tuesday 6 th February Niall, Javan, Thomas, Robert, Lola, Ella, Ellie, Lily, Olivia and Daisy went to the swimming gala. We started off by doing a warm up. Then we did our races, the first race was girls 25m breaststroke with Ellie and then Boys 25m breaststroke with Niall. Next was girls backstroke with Lily and boys backstroke with Thomas R after that was front crawl with Ella and Javan. We could only do one race. Now people have swam their races it is time for the relays. First relay was with Lola, Olivia, Daisy and Lily and we could do any stroke. Then the boys did their relay with Javan, Thomas R, Robert and Niall. Now the medleys the first race was the girls with Lola doing backstroke Ellie doing breaststroke Ella doing front crawl and Olivia doing freestyle. The boys did the medleys with Thomas R doing backstroke Niall doing breaststroke Javan doing front crawl and Robert doing freestyle. We came 6 th out of 9 all together and second in the small schools. Everyone did a very good job with their races. Report by Robert & Thomas R, Year 4 KS1 5-a-side footy at Slingsby! With the KS2 swimming over and done with in the morning, it was the turn of KS1 to take over the mantel during the afternoon... On Tuesday 6th February, in the afternoon, Mr Woods took seven children to Slingsby School to play in a football tournament. We played a tournament and there were six matches. In the final, we lost 3-2 so we were the runners-up. There were five schools who played. We had fun. Our team was Jake, Jasper, Lennon, Maisie, Henry, Cohen and Jacob. 3 Bikeability Year 6 pupils brought home letters and medical information forms last week in preparation for their Bikeability Level 1 training. The training will be taking place on Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th March. Consent and information forms need to back to school before the sessions, so please send them to the office as soon as possible. Please note that children s bikes can be left at school overnight on Tuesday 13th March, and can be dropped off after school on Monday 12th March if necessary. Bikeability is today s cycle training programme. It s like cycling proficiency but better! It s about gaining practical skills and understanding how to cycle on today s roads. Bikeability gives everyone the skills and confidence for all kinds of cycling. At Level 1, new riders learn to control and master their bikes in a space away from the traffic, such as the school playground. At Level 1, you can; Prepare yourself and your bike for cycling. Get on and off your bike without help. Start off, pedal and stop with control. Pedal along, use gears and avoid objects. Look all around and behind, and control the bike. Share space with pedestrians and other cyclists. For more information, visit the website FoLS Update Disco! It may not have been the adults ideal choice of event however the children seemed to have a really good time! We had neon UV face paint, LED foam batons, fibre optic hair clips which added to the atmosphere in the hall. The DJ was brilliant with the children and provided a top class service many thanks to Ange Brooks for sourcing the DJ! We are extremely pleased to share that we managed to raise an impressive Our thanks go to all those who helped out on the night and to all families that attended. ALERT - Date Change! Family Chocolate Bingo Now being held at 5pm at school on Wednesday 28 th March. Apologies for the change but due to work commitments of a number of the FoLS members it was no longer possible to hold the bingo on the previously arranged date. The Bingo will start at 5pm and last for approximately 1 hour. It will cost 2 per person (payable on arrival) and this includes 3 games of bingo. Prizes will be awarded for 1 line, 2 lines and a full house; there will also be some additional lucky number prizes! More details to follow please put the dates in your diaries! School Council update The new School Council for this term is: Oliver Th (Class 3) - Chairperson Lily (Class 3) - Secretary Millie (Class 3), Jack, Bella (Class 2), Lillia & Isabella (Class 1) We have helped Mrs Conroy count leaflets for the three classes and have been helping to choose a new piece of equipment for the playground. Our next big event if Sport Relief in March. We are planning a Sports Activity Day on Thursday 22nd March for the whole school more details o follow. We will also be selling Sport Relief wristbands. 4 World Book Week begins on Monday 26th February, and the whole school will be taking part in some fun activities b a s e d a r o u n d reading. As part of this, Class 1 and Class 3 will be joining Leavening School for some book related fun on Wednesday 28th February with years 2, 3 and 4 from Leavening coming to Langton (children in classes 1 & 3 will need a packed lunch on those days). We are holding a Maths Day on Thursday 24th May when Class 2 will be going to Leavening, Official World Book Day is Thursday 1st March and all children are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. We look forward to seeing some wonderful costumes! Stay and Langton! Bring us your boxes! Class 3 are getting into the castle construction business but need a few raw materials so if you have any boxes (cereal boxes, or any other cardboard boxes of varying sizes), please send them in to the building foreman (i.e. Mr Woods). Many thanks! For anyone out there with preschool children, our Stay & Play session on Wednesday mornings (term times am) are open to all. The first session is free, so please pop along with your toddlers and have a coffee and a chat! If you are interested in coming along, or have friends that may like to attend, please let Sam know so we can have an idea as to numbers. We look forward to welcoming you and your little ones to Langton! Langton Book Bags! We now have a supply of brand new Langton book bags, as modelled here by our new School Councillors! They are available from school for 6.50 so if you would like one, please let Sam know. Payment can be made in cash or cheque (payable to Langton Primary School). Peat Rigg Residentials! Class 2 parents have this week received details of the activities that are planned for the April 1 night residential, a kit list and a Parental Consent form that Peat Rigg require for all those attending. If these could be filled in and returned to school as soon as possible, it would be much appreciated. Deposits for both the Class 2 ( 20) and Class 3 ( 36) were due by Wednesday 31st January but there are still a few outstanding. Please make sure you visit your ParentPay account and pay this as soon as possible. Many thanks. School procedures during severe weather conditions It is the school s policy to make every effort to remain open and have business as usual regardless of the weather. However, the safety of students, parents and staff is always of paramount importance. If the school is to close, a decision will be made between 7.30am and 7.45am. * If your child attends Breakfast Club, please make sure that you check for any communication before setting off for school.* A text message will be sent to all parents listed as first contact as well as an . Please check our school website where closure details will be on the front page. A message will be posted on the NYCC website and a message will be broadcast by BBC Radio York and Minster FM.
