Josh Bruce 5 goals (Round 7, 2015) ADELAIDE CROWS PICTURED - Josh Bruce LAST TIME ROUND 7, 2015 ADL STK Six weeks into its inaugural season in the AFL the Adelaide Crows were an unknown quality. But the Crows seemed to be a bit out of their depth in their first trip to Moorabbin in round 7, 1991 where they took on a St Kilda team that was welcoming Tony Lockett and Nicky Winmar in for their first games of the year. Lockett booted 12 goals and Winmar had 33 touches as the Crows were smashed by 131 points for what was at the time the biggest winning margin in St Kilda s history. The Saints faced a tough task in the first week of the 2005 finals with an away game against top of the table Adelaide and looked to be in trouble after they kicked just the one goal in the first quarter. But a spirited effort by the young Saints saw them hold the Crows goalless in the second term and hold out a narrow lead that gave them a direct path to the preliminary final. Nick Dal Santo was polished in the midfield and second-gamer James Gwilt kicked two handy goals but the star of the night was 34-year-old Robert Harvey who had 31 touches and kicked three goals to be his team s best player. The image of Harvey raising his arms in triumph and being mobbed by his young teammates at the siren lingers in the memory of most Saints fans. Leigh Montagna 37 disposals (Round 6, 2014) Nick Riewoldt 4 goals (Round 9, 2015) BRISBANE LIONS PICTURED - Leigh Montagna LAST TIME ROUND 9, 2015 BRI STK The most powerful team of the early part of the 2000s was a formidable opponent for a young and developing Saints team but two matches at what was then known as the Telstra Dome stand out. In 2003 the Saints staged a massive upset thanks partly to an Austinn Jones shot that was judged a point when it may have been out of bounds. The Lions were on their way to a third successive flag but that didn t worry the youthful Saints team. The following year St Kilda had won its first five games but was widely predicted to have a reality check against the powerful Lions. It wasn t to be, and Troy Schwarze s spectacular long goal in the final minute had every Saints fan out of their seats in jubilation. 7 Real COFFEE. Real SMALL. CARLTON LAST TIME ROUND 4, 2015 STK CAR For all the misery of the 1980s, the Saints were capable of the odd stroke of magic such as in round two, Carlton had been a powerhouse team of the 1980s and was still a strong outfit. The biggest match-up of the day was key forward Tony Lockett against highly-rated defender Stephen Silvagni. Lockett had an absolute day out with nine goals to his name late in the game. But his biggest moment came in the final minute when he took a mark on the boundary line and calmly slotted his 10th goal to give the Saints a four-point win. St Kilda fans who had spent years watching their team regularly lose to Carlton may have felt a bit of revenge in 2004 when they handed them a 108-point thumping. The Saints score of (196) remains the highest score ever conceded by the Blues. Fraser Gehrig kicked nine goals, Stephen Milne kicked six and Lenny Hayes had 37 touches in a truly dominant performance. 8 ROUND 3 SATURDAY APRIL 9 MCG 1.45PM 1966 P R E M I E R S H I P 50 TH A N N I V E R S A R Y V COLLINGWOOD LAST TIME ROUND 3, 2015 COL STK For all the great rivalries in football, no two teams have a Grand Final history quite like St Kilda and Collingwood. The Saints famously won their first and only premiership by a single point against the Magpies in Barry Breen s wobbly punt that bounced through for a point was enough to secure the Saints first silverware. Fourty four years later the two teams were locked in another Grand Final epic that finished in just the third draw in Grand Final history. Collingwood won the replay the following week with the Saints coming as close as possible to premiership glory without actually tasting it. Another memorable September clash between the two foundation teams came in It was on right from the coin toss when Magpies skipper Tony Shaw took the chance to mouth off at Saints counterpart Danny Frawley only to earn a stern shove to the chest. The Saints went on to notch their first finals win in 19 years, only to bow out the following week against Footscray. STK 8 COLL 11 DRAW

ESSENDON LAST TIME ROUND 14, 2015 STK ESS You don t have to look too far back to find a memorable game against the Bombers, with the Saints thrashing the red and black to the tune of 110 points in round 14, Josh Bruce kicked five and Nick Riewoldt kicked four while David Armitage had 38 possessions. There has been particular interest in these two teams since Brendon Goddard became the first player to change clubs under the AFL s free agency system. Goddard departed the Saints for the Bombers at the end of Jack Billings first AFL goal (Round 5, 2014) Jack Lonie Rising Star nomination (Round 14, 2015) Josh Bruce St Kilda debut (Round 5, 2014) Daniel McKenzie debut (Round 5, 2015) PICTURED - (L-R) Jack Sinclair, Jack Lonie, Jack Steven. 10 FREMANTLE LAST TIME ROUND 19, 2015 STK FRE Games against Fremantle have always held a particular level of interest ever since Ross Lyon quit the Saints coaching post at the end of 2011 to take the Fremantle job. In Lyon s time at Fremantle, the Saints have enjoyed a couple of surprise wins at Etihad Stadium. The first was the final game of the 2013 season in which Jack Steven and Leigh Montagna each had 47 possessions and the Saints won by 71 points as they farewelled the retiring Justin Koschitzke, Stephen Milne and Jason Blake. The following year the Saints staged the biggest upset of the season, knocking off a Fremantle making its run home to the finals. The most memorable moment of that game was Saints ruckman Billy Longer theatrically pointing to the scoreboard while engaging in a push and shove with Zac Clarke. Jack Steven and Leigh Montagna 47 disposals each (Round 23, 2013) Nick Riewoldt 4 goals and 30 disposals (Round 18, 2014) PICTURED - Nick Riewoldt & Luke Dunstan ROUND 10 Saturday, May pm 18 PICTURED - Billy Longer 19 STK 14 FRE 6

GEELONG CATS LAST TIME ROUND 21, 2015 STK GEE The round 14, 2009 clash is widely regarded as one of the great home and away games of the modern era. Both teams had gone into the game undefeated and the match was hotly anticipated as a dress rehearsal to that year s Grand Final (which it turned out to be the case.) The match lived up to the hype right down to the final minutes when St Kilda ruckman Michael Gardiner took a spectacular contested mark and kicked the goal to give the Saints the win. Gardiner took another mark shortly afterwards on the wing to hold up play and give his team a brilliant win. The two teams have engaged in several big finals over the years including the 1991 elimination final that featured a shootout between Bill Brownless and Tony Lockett, qualifying finals in 2008 and 2010 and of course the Grand Final in 2009 which Geelong won by a narrow margin. 12 GOLD COAST SUNS LAST TIME ROUND 2, 2015 GC STK St Kilda went into 2015 with some experts predicting they wouldn t win a game for the year. That went out the window two weeks into the season when Josh Bruce announced himself on the AFL scene with a six goal performance at Metricon Stadium that took his team to a surprise win. Jack Sinclair and Jack Lonie also impressed in their second games. Two players have played for both clubs with Tom Hickey arriving at the Saints at the end of 2012 after spending two years with the Suns, while Andrew McQualter went the other way after his time at the Saints ended in GWS GIANTS LAST TIME ROUND 15, 2015 GWS STK The briefest of all rivalries the Saints have and the strongest connection between the two clubs is Josh Bruce, who changed from orange and charcoal to red, white and black at the end of It s a move that has paid off so far for both the Saints and Bruce, with the key forward booting 50 goals in a career best season in Josh Bruce 6 goals (Round 2, 2015) Jack Lonie first AFL goal (Round 2, 2015) Jack Sinclair first AFL goal (Round 2, 2015) Sam Fisher 200 Games (Round 2, 2015) PICTURED - Sam Fisher Jack Lonie debut (Round 1, 2015) Jack Sinclair debut (Round 1, 2015) Tim Membrey Saints debut game and first club goal (Round 1, 2015) Josh Bruce Mark on the Year nomination (Round 1, 2015) PICTURED - Josh Bruce ROUND 15 Saturday, July 2 Metricon Stadium 1.40pm Local Time LAST 8 STK 5 GC 3 ROUND 5 Sunday, April pm LAST 5 STK 3 GWS 2

HAWTHORN LAST TIME ROUND 10, 2015 STK HAW Having shared the Mornington Peninsula as a traditional recruiting zone, as well as Waverley Park as a home ground, there is a lot of common ground between the Hawks and the Saints. But the most famous common ground would have to be Allan Jeans - a favourite son of both clubs, having coached the Saints to the 1966 premiership and Hawthorn to three flags in 1983, 1986 and The two teams contested one of the most intense Grand Finals of all time in 1971 where both teams went into the Grand Final with one premiership apiece. The Hawks came from behind to secure their second despite Hawks full forward Peter Hudson falling just short of kicking a record 151st goal for the season. Hawthorn has since gone on to win a few more flags, us not so much. MELBOURNE LAST TIME ROUND 11, 2015 MEL STK St Kilda s longest current winning streak is against Melbourne with the Saints claiming the past 12 victories over the red and blue, with the most recent a thrilling win thanks to a last minute goal from Leigh Montagna. The vision and audio of Alan Richardson from the coaches box remains one of the most enduring images of St Kilda s 2015 season. Some of the more memorable St Kilda v Melbourne games in recent seasons include the 1987 clash where Tony Lockett booted 12 of St Kilda s 14 goals in total in a losing team and the 1978 clash where the Saints kicked their highest ever score of (204). Blake Acres debut (Round 7, 2014) Maverick Weller St Kilda debut (Round 7, 2014) Jarryn Geary 100th game (Round 7, 2014) ROUND 4 Saturday, April 16 Aurora Stadium 2.10pm Local Time PICTURED - Jack Steven STK 8 HAW 11 DRAW 1 Luke Dunstan, Jack Billings and Eli Templeton AFL debut (Round 1, 2014) Leigh Montagna goal with seconds remaining (Round 11, 2015) ROUND 6 Saturday, April pm ROUND 17 Sunday, July pm PICTURED - Eli Templeton STK 14 MEL 6

Leigh Montagna 33 disposals (Round 20, 2015) NORTH MELBOURNE LAST TIME ROUND 20, 2015 NTH STK One of the most defining games in St Kilda s history came against North Melbourne in round 5, A succession of injuries in a bruising encounter left the Saints with only 15 men on the ground by the final quarter, not that that held them back from eventually securing a 14-point win. It was widely believed that after this game it was decided that St Kilda players would wear the club shield on the jumper, a tradition that continues to this day. But that urban legend has since been dispelled, with photographic evidence of players wearing the shield in earlier games in Nick Riewoldt s 600th AFL goal (Round 12, 2014) Tom Curren s debut (Round 17, 2013) PORT ADELAIDE LAST TIME ROUND 18, 2015 PTA STK As far as heart-breakers go, few can surpass the 2004 preliminary final between St Kilda and Port Adelaide. The Saints led for a decent portion of the game and had all the momentum when Fraser Gehrig booted his 100th goal for the season early in the match. The ensuring crowd invasion brought a halt to proceedings and to St Kilda s momentum and the Power were able to claw their way back, eventually winning that game and the following week s Grand Final against the Brisbane Lions while the Saints were left to ponder what might have been. There have been some more pleasant memories of Port Adelaide encounters the second ever game between the two was a win to the Saints with the 33-point margin just enough to secure the 1997 minor premiership. ROUND 7 Sunday, May pm ROUND 19 Saturday, July pm STK 11 NTH 9 ROUND 1 Sunday, March 27 Adelaide Oval 2.50pm Local Time STK 5 PRT 15

RICHMOND LAST TIME ROUND 16, 2015 STK RCH The most famous common ground between the Saints and the Tigers was the sensational trade in 1971 that saw Ian Stewart head to Richmond and Bill Barrot to the Saints. Stewart won a third Brownlow medal and a premiership with Richmond while Barrot played two games and left St Kilda before the season was out. It was fair to say we didn t come out on top in that one. In 2015 the two clubs contested the inaugural Maddie s Match in honour of Maddie Riewoldt the sister of St Kilda captain Nick and cousin of Richmond s Jack. The match celebrated Maddie Riewoldt s Vision which was set up to raise awareness and funding for sufferers of aplastic anaemia. SYDNEY SWANS LAST TIME ROUND 11, 2015 MEL STK These two clubs have in many ways had parallel histories since they were foundation VFL clubs in The Swans, based at Lakeside Oval and the Saints at the nearby Junction Oval were very close neighbours with a limited amount of success for the bulk of their histories. Since the Swans relocated to Sydney in 1982 the teams have continued a rivalry that has only been heightened by the departures of Tony Lockett and Barry Hall to the Swans. It hasn t always been one-way traffic though as the Saints pulled off one of the most successful trades of all time when it landed Adam Schneider and Sean Dempster at the end of Perhaps the most memorable image from the history between the two teams is the pig that was released on to the SCG during a Swans v St Kilda game in 1993 with number 4, Pluga written on its body. Hugh Goddard debut (Round 16, 2015) Maddie s Match (Round 16, 2015) PICTURED - (L-R) Jack Sinclair, Nick Riewoldt, Paddy McCartin Jason Holmes vs fellow international player Mike Pyke, Round 22, 2015 PICTURED - Jason Holmes ROUND 22 Saturday, August 20 MCG 2.10pm STK 13 RIC 6 DRAW 1 ROUND 21 Saturday, August pm STK 9 SYD 11

Hugh Goddard s first AFL goal (Round 23, 2015) Jack Billings Rising Star nomination and 25 disposals at 100% efficiency (Round 14, 2014) WEST COAST EAGLES PICTURED - Jason Holmes LAST TIME ROUND 23, 2015 WSC STK The Saints have had some sensational battles with the Eagles over the years including some gripping encounters at Subiaco Oval that have fallen the Saints way. Few could forget the round six match in 1998 when the Saints crossed the nullabor without co-captains Nathan Burke and Stewart Loewe. Many predicted a thumping but few predicted a six-goal haul from both Daniel Healy and Peter Everitt on the day they each turned 24 years old. A late free kick against Ashley McIntosh in the Saints forward line sealed the win by two points. Nine years later the Saints faced another daunting trip west, this time to take on an Eagles team that was flying high from winning the previous year s premiership. The Saints were boosted by the absence of Chris Judd and Ben Cousins and had the added incentive of Robert Harvey s 350th AFL game. After a tight first term, the Saints booted seven goals in a stunning second quarter, giving them a lead they didn t surrender and one of the more unlikely victories. The love for Harvey was evident at the end of the game with St Kilda players coming from everywhere to mob him. Farren Ray s 200th afl game (round 13, 2015) Jack Billings three last quarter goals and four for the match (round 6, 2015) David Armitage career-high 45 disposals (round 6, 2015) WESTERN BULLDOGS PICTURED - Jack Billings LAST TIME ROUND 5, 2015 STK WSB The Bulldogs were one of the fairytale stories of 2015, surpassing almost every expectation by finishing in the finals. And it looked like they were set to continue their winning ways when they led by 55 points shortly before half-time of their round six clash with the Saints. A scuffle right on half-time seemed to act as a spark for the Saints who piled on seven goals in the third quarter and another four in the last to give them a seven-point victory in what was the fifth greatest comeback win in the history of the VFL/AFL. Jack Billings and David Armitage had career-best games for the Saints, Armitage gathering an extraordinary 45 disposals and Billings kicking four second-half goals to orchestrate one of the most unlikely victories. The two clubs also share a title they would both be happy to shed some time soon as the only two Victorian clubs to have won just one premiership.
