5 2 - Personal Space / Warm-ups TIME: 5-8 minutes NEEDED: Bubbles Review Practice finding a personal space. Discuss the meaning of personal space. Practice stop, face the teacher and listen when your signal is given. Activities In Kindergarten and Grade One, it is fun to go outdoors and blow bubbles first. What happens if you touch a bubble? If the bubble hits something? Leave your personal space and go for a walk. Run home at a signal. Discuss the fact that our personal space must go with us, as if we are in a bubble. The size of that bubble is as far as you can stretch and reach with your body parts. Discuss how bubbles that stay bubbles the longest are those that don't touch any other bubbles or anything else, but if a bubble does touch something else, it POPS and cannot move anymore. Inform students they will be moving in their bubbles today, trying not to touch anyone or anything else. Pretend you are in your bubbles and do these exercises - use the signal to stop the students after perhaps seconds: - run - walk - hop on one foot - jump on two feet - crawl on hands and knees - invent a new way to move! Return to your personal space, or your home. Possible Game: Bubbles 46

6 Gross Motor / Skill Building - 27 Ball Skills TIME: minutes NEEDED: Large balls, basketball size Throwing with Two Hands Review Review the catching and throwing exercises in the previous lesson. Activities When we throw a large ball, we use two hands. Why? It is too big to hold with one. Have you watched adults playing basketball? These players usually use two hands to catch and throw. Discuss how the hands should be placed on the ball - one hand on each side with the fingers spread and curved as the ball is curved. Practice holding the hands this way. - Drop the ball with two hands, and catch it, thinking about the hand placement. Were your hands ready to catch the ball? Hold the ball tightly after catching it. - Push downwards as you drop the ball. What do you see happen? It bounces higher and faster, too. Are your hands ready to catch it? - Bounce the ball against a wall, let it bounce once and catch it in two hands. Can you see where your hands need to be to catch it? Back farther from the wall and throw the ball with two hands again, and catch after one bounce. Think about where the ball will be when it gets back to you. (Some students have a problem estimating where the ball will be, and this needs practice. Other children will know instinctively.) - Throw the ball up with two hands and catch it with two hands. Make little throws until you are sure you know that you can catch it. If the ball escapes, you are throwing too high or not straight up. Let the students try different throws and catches. Watch for students who are having difficulty. 99

7 NEEDED: pinnies Spiders and Flies SPIDERS AND FLIES - Game 8 Choose a few students to be the taggers, or spiders. After putting on a pinnie, they stand in the middle of the playing area. The remaining students, (the flies or runners), line up at one end of the playing area. Make sure students are well spread out! The spiders start by saying We are the Spiders ; the flies respond We are the Flies. The spiders return We're going to catch you, and the flies say Just you try. At this, the flies move toward the opposite end of the playing area, trying not to get tagged by a spider. If they do, they quickly get a pinnie and then become a spider by taking a place in the middle of the area. Once the flies have made it to the opposite end of the field, they stay there until the poem tells them to return to the opposite end of the field. When only a few flies remain, start a new game by picking new spiders. NEEDED: lots of bean bags BEAT THE TEACHER - Game 9 Beat the Teacher Put a number of bean bags into a large bucket or trash container. The teacher is in the center of the floor the with container and starts to toss the bean bags out in handfuls around the room. The children try to pick them up and get them back in the container before the container becomes empty. Of course, the teacher can control his/ her tossing speed! Discuss the personal space and the possibility of bumping another person. 115

8 Four Square - Recess Games - 4 Four Square There are four squares painted on the ground, all touching each other, making one larger square. Each small square is roughly 8' x 8', but that's not a hard and fast rule. The ball used either a large or middlesized ball that bounces well or the Each player occupies one of the squares. The squares each have a rank order. The square with the highest rank is called the 'King'. The other squares sometimes have names, and sometime don't. They are sometimes called the 'Queen', 'Prince', and 'Princess'. KING square 4 To start the game, the King serves the ball by bouncing it in his square once and then hitting it with the hands towards one of the other squares. The receiving player lets the ball bounce once in his square and then hits the ball to any other player, and play continues until one of the following things occur and the player is out : 1) A player hits the ball (or is hit BY the ball) before it bounces once in their square. 2) A player does not hit the ball before it bounces twice 3) A player hits the ball out of bounds (it must land in someone's square first) Once a player is 'dead', he/she moves back to the lowest ranking square. The other players then move up to fill the vacancies. If there are more players than squares, that person goes to the back of the line, and the person at the front of the line gets to move onto the lowest square and play. 187
