Issue 3: 29/06/15 Orleans Primary School Newspaper Welcome, To our first special sports edition! We decided to do this to celebrate the sports we have been taking part in and all of our achievements. While sport is always very important at Orleans, recently we have been especially busy with various sporting events throughout the school, such as sports week and sports day. Everyone should be so proud because we are a very active school and have done so well in our sporting events. We also caught up with Mr Heaton, our new Year 6 teacher, who will be the new PE co-ordinator. We have supplied you with quotes and interviews to tell you more about how children at Orleans feel about their achievements and sport at our school. The newspaper club have had so much fun making it and we all hope you enjoy! Phoebe Bowen Editor

Do you enjoy sport? Interview with Mr Heaton Absolutely. Sport is my passion. For me sport is one of the most important subjects that you do at Primary School. I love participating in and watching a variety of different sports. Rugby, Cycling and Athletics are probably my favourites, although I have enjoyed coaching the girl s and boy s football teams this year too! I am lucky enough to watch Harlequins Rugby Team play all year and to watch many cycling competitions around the country. Have you ever been in charge of sport? At my current school I have been in charge of all the competitions and teams throughout KS2. We have attended over 15 competitions this year, winning three of them and coming in the top 5 in 7 of the rest. It is my job to make sure that all children have the opportunity to take part, that teams are selected on merit and that we train hard to ensure we perform to the best of our abilities. Are you looking forward to it? I cannot wait to get started! I have already got a list of the competitions and leagues we will enter and train for, meaning that as soon as we start back in September, we can get straight down to work! I ve started to look at some brand new sports equipment for everyone throughout the school to use as well. I am also really looking forward to engaging in sport all of those pupils who might not like doing PE all of the time. There is so much to gain from participating in PE lessons and sports clubs in and outside of school. What sorts of sport do you like the most? As I mentioned above, rugby, cycling and athletics are my favourite sports. However, I enjoy watching and coaching football too (I m afraid to tell you I m a secret Manchester United fan). To be honest though, I like most sports. My current years 6s are really enjoying our American Football sessions. Ultimate Frisbee and cricket are also high up on my favourite sports to play as well as Handball. The list goes on and on What are you going to do differently? PE and Sport will be fun, engaging and competitive. Training for competitions is very important. It gives us the opportunity to practice and improve not only individual skills but, more importantly, working as a team. The more practice we can do, the far better we will perform. It may mean selected pupils having to train in the mornings, lunchtimes or after school, so we ll need some dedication from you guys too. PE and Sport will be prominent within the school and the local community. Thank you for your answering our questions! We are looking forward to meeting you!

Who loves sports? If you do then last week was certainly your type of week; full of fun sporting activities, like skipping or wheelchair basketball. Miss Martin planned amazing activities for the week, and did a fantastic job. All the pupils thought she did a wonderful job on organising this week. Here are some quotes: Ruby Rose, Y2: I enjoyed golf because I learnt new things. Toby, Y3: I thought fencing was really good, as the instructor taught us all loads of new things. Libby, Y4: I enjoyed wheelchair basketball because it was fun. Kieya, Y5: So far we ve done wheelchair basketball, which was fantastic, and I can t wait for fencing!

Sports day report By: Michael Ring Smith On the morning of the 17 th of June I walked to school with my brother Alexander to school after we were registered as a class. We walked to St Mary s University; it was a bright and sunny day. We arrived at the university at 10 am. We were registered again. The teachers then explained how the sports day would go. We had to move around to 4 stations which were located around the running track. We had to move from the first station and to the next until we completed the 4 stations. We moved in Houses. From there, we were divided into year group heats. (Numbered into 3). Each event had 9 heats in total. The first event was long jump, which began at about 10:15AM I was delighted to win long jump and this was achieved with one single jump. Following the packed lunch which took place from 12 noon to 1:00PM I participated successfully in the hurdles event and finished 3rd in my heat. At 3.20pm the final register was taken and we were collected by our parents and then walked home. Mrs Mole organising the relay teams. Year 5 relay race It was a lovely afternoon-perfect for a relay race, in lane1: Richmond 2: Crane 3: Marble Hill 4: Syon, Ella was fast off the mark but Ryuchi was close behind. The baton was passed and Syriah was close behind Logan. Anushka was slowing down though so this could be an opening for Marble Hill. The batons are passed a second time. And Manons not wasting any time, but Thomas is hot off his heels! Now Coles pacing down the track but Leon is as fast as a bullet! For the last few steps of the race Cole and Phoebe were neck and neck. Tension is building when they announced the winners and in first place was.drum roll please.syon followed by Richmond followed by Marble Hill and last but not least Crane! By Cole

s Javelin When we did the Javelin we had to be very careful not to cross the line. We had one practice then it was the real thing. Quotes: It was really hard to get a good aim but it was fun to through. [Xan Year4] I really liked it and it was enjoyable. 400 Meter Sprint

Houses Syon, Marble Hill, Crane and Richmond all took part in our Sports Day and supported their houses brilliantly! Here are some chants we made to support our houses: 2, 4, 6, 8, we are Syon, We are great! 2, 4, 6, 8, who do we appreciate? Not the King, Not the Queen, But the Marble Hill team! Over all Winners 1 st Syon! 2 nd Crane 3 rd Richmond 4 th Marble Hill Well done SYON!! Crane were so close but lost by 13 points. Everyone was really happy and proud of their team. What an excellent competition!
