Now, as I write, parents may well be breathing a sigh of relief as we are coming to the end of the school holidays and the children, who have become accustomed to six weeks of school-less living, are bracing themselves for the return to the world of knowledge, numeracy, new shoes. By the time this goes to press, the new lunch boxes and books bags will already be in use. This month, we are keeping Education Sunday in its new changed date at the start of the school year, rather than at the beginning of the calendar year. It is a chance for us to reflect on the place of the Christian faith in the business of education; to pray for church schools; to think of all schools attended by pupils from this parish; and also to remember Bringhurst School its pupils, staff and governors and the David Ross Educational Trust. Education Sunday also gives us an opportunity to reflect on the vital significance of lifelong learning, which goes with us beyond the classroom. It is all too easy to conclude that learning is purely for school but what about us? Are we who left school a long time ago still learning? Jesus called people around him to be his disciples, learners by another name. The disciples were invited into a school of life. Their master, their guru, their teacher was the one whom the Gospel depicts as saying: I have come that you might have life and life in all its fullness. Would it not be a great shame if those of us who are older determined that we didn t need to learn or develop anymore? I might not purposefully choose that, but I am very conscious of my own need, given my own temperament, to go on deliberately putting myself in a position where I might go on learning. The people I most admire are those who, at any age, keep on looking forward, maintain open and enquiring minds and are always open to the opportunity to learn something which makes them more whole as people. Come, Holy Spirit! We welcome you. Open our minds to your work in us; through us; for us; despite the narrowness of our vision. Open our hearts to your work in those whom we meet, despite the limitations of our openness to them. Open our hearts to your presence in creation, and to the glimpses we see of your glory in human endeavour, in music and art, in humanities, in literature and science, in new understanding and insight. Come, Holy Spirit! We welcome you. Amen. The Revd Stephen Bishop Rector of the Parish of Six Saints circa Holt 30 3

5 Gardeners Corner September 2016 By Alistair Peak PGS With late summer here and harvest well on the way, we can only hope that we see an Indian Summer, it is such a special time of year that brings that special smell of autumn. This is the time of year that dahlias are at their best (these have always been a favourite of mine), there are many shades of reds, oranges yellows, purples, crimsons, white and even two tone colours. These are good vibrant colours, which can be accentuated by the autumn colours just arriving. These tuberous rooted perennials will by continual dead heading, continue to flower right up to the first frost and are great for flower arranging. They are wonderful plants, you can get many different types of dahlias, from large decorative types to small bedding varieties so if you haven t much room, think about next years planting, they can include some pots with bedding varieties in the planting scheme. Remember to include single headed varieties for the insects and that the tubers need to be over wintered in a frost free environment. The tender pot plants have enjoyed their holiday outside you will soon need to return them back indoors. The late flowering, potted up chrysanthemums also need to be brought in. Should we get a warm September, remember to give the greenhouse some ventilation as they soon heat up. There are many colours of Buxus including green, golden and variegated suitable for hedges, topiary and planting in open or shady shrubberies. If you are lucky to have Box Hedge or Topiary and you trimmed them in June, they will have made more growth and now is the time to give them another trim. This will give them a tight finish for the winter, producing great structure for the winter period, especially in the frost and fog with the winter sun throwing new light on them. Gardener s Tip: Spring is only five months away, that must mean the garden centres and nurseries are now selling BULBS. Get down as soon as possible to ensure your favourites and sound strong bulbs. DRAYTON NEWS The long awaited building works have begun at St James Church, Drayton. It is hoped that the church will be open to resume normal worship at the beginning of October. The service scheduled for Sunday 4th September at 9.00 am will take place at the home of Tom and Joyce Chaplin at Parmoor, 4 The Green, Drayton. Our grateful thanks go to the Chaplin s for making this possible. David Hill - Brookes - Warden IMPORTANT NOTICE! 10 GREAT EASTON YOUTH GROUP GOOD NEWS!! The Youth Group will be re-starting in Great Easton from MONDAY 12 th SEPTEMBER, 5.30 pm pm meeting every Monday evening during School term time in the Village Hall, for young people between years. The Youth Group will be run by Harborough District Children and Young People s Charity, with initial funding provided from Six Saints Youth Group. The Charity will be responsible for all operational aspects of running the Youth Group in accordance with national guidelines. However, there is NOW an important and urgent need to form a small local Support Committee to provide the interface with the local community. This is a rewarding commitment but the previous committee, having served throughout the previous 12 years, now feel it important to pass the baton to the next generation! Parents or anyone interested in our young people, who would like more information, please contact either: Jane Boulter ( ) or David Gibley ( ) OUR YOUNG PEOPLE NEED YOU!!! CHRISTIAN AID COLLECTION Great Easton, Bringhurst and Drayton A belated and well deserved thank you for all those who worked so hard to raise a total of 478 plus gift aid for Christian Aid in June. This was a great effort by David Gibley and his team of supporters. Well done and thanks to all concerned. Julia Bowder (Deputy Warden) Medbourne cum Holt WI On Wednesday 13 th July 2016 members spent a most enjoyable evening in the lovely garden of Michael and Marilyn Switzer playing a variety of outdoor games, includes croquette, swing ball and table tennis. This was followed by a bring and share supper when thanks were given for the warm welcome given to us all by both Michael and Marilyn. Our next meeting is being held on Wednesday 14 th September 2016 when Katharine Wright from the Craft Centre, Market Harborough will be coming along to give us an introduction to Learn, Design & Making Book Sculptures. Please bring an old book with you as we will be having a go at making one ourselves! We always welcome new members and look forward to meeting anyone who would like to come along to find out more about our active and friendly group. On Saturday 10 th September 2016 we will also be holding a Coffee Morning at the Harborough Theatre from 9.30am 12 noon. Apart from refreshments of tea, coffee, scones and cakes, we will be having a Cake & Produce Stall together with a Tombola. Donations of cakes or produce would therefore be much appreciated. Jenny Sandars Member of the Medbourne cum Holt WI Teamwork at St Giles Medbourne Our annual fete was held on Saturday, 2 nd July and, apart from a nasty little shower shortly before it started, the weather held fair which was a great relief to all concerned. We are fortunate in having such a dedicated group of helpers without whose loyal support and great teamwork this event simply could not take place. On behalf of the Rector and St Giles DCC, I would like to record our grateful thanks to everybody involved in making this event such a success - the names of the helpers are far too numerous to record. There are the catering staff, the stall-holders, those who ran the sideshows and other money-raising events, not forgetting those who lugged trestle tables and other heavy items about in setting things up and taking them down again. Then there are those who manned the gates and others who generously donated cakes, toys, bric-a-brac, books, plants and goodness knows what else. And of course we must not forget the band whose lively music kept us all entertained throughout the afternoon. A big thank you too to all those people who came along and gave us their support. It is through all that goodwill and public support that we manage to keep the show on the road and our Church in good order. The event raised approximately 1,600. Again, our grateful thanks to everybody concerned. Martin van Oppen (Churchwarden) 10 23

12 Great Easton & District WI Our outing in June proved to be very interesting and informative, when twenty nine members and friends visited the new Richard III Centre in Leicester. We were fascinated to learn about the events leading up to the discovery of the king's body, and details of proving it's authenticity, which were displayed so clearly. In August we held an outdoor meeting, when members followed clues and pictures on a trail of discovery around the village. This was followed by supper in the Village Hall. 15 THEFT FROM ST GILES CHURCH, MEDBOURNE Sometime during the day on Monday the 20 th June, the offertory box was prised from the wall and stolen from St Giles. It is a sad reflection on our society that there are rogues about who are prepared to lower themselves to the extent of stealing small sums of money from the Church whose members do so much to assist the poor and needy around the world. Whilst it is always easy to close the door after the horse has bolted, it does remind us all to remember to empty our offertory boxes on a regular basis. In an effort to discourage such theft, it may also be worth recording the date that this is done on a notice alongside the box. If by any chance anyone happened to see somebody, probably a workman, loitering near the church that day, perhaps carrying a crow-bar or large hammer, could they please get in touch with me. Martin van Oppen - Churchwarden Medbourne Defibrillator Update September As we hope you are all aware the 2 defibrillators are now installed in the village one at the Sports Club and one at the Village Hall. New signs have now been put up around the village to alert everyone as to their location. We are running a third First Aid Training session, paid for from the funds, on Sunday October 23 rd at the Village Hall from There are 12 places available in total and anyone wishing to take part should ring David Tyler on Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Finally we would like to draw your attention to the fact that as the Parish Council does not have the legal power to ring fence the remaining funds, the Defibrillator Committee has decided to continue to hold the remaining funds. These funds will be used for future first aid training and future costs relating to the Defibrillator located at the Village Hall. We would like to offer our thanks to the Parish Council for looking into this matter on our behalf.
