1 Bowbrook News w.e. Friday 20 th January ISI Inspection: Dear parents, As you may be aware of our last full school inspection was in 2011 which means that at some point during this academic year we are due to undergo a full ISI inspection. The likelihood is, given the timings of our previous inspections, that this will take place at some point during this Spring Term. The inspection will have two main constituent parts. The Regulatory Requirements; Health & Safety, Child Protection, Safeguarding, etc, and The Quality of Educational Provision; the Pupil s Progress, i.e. their academic progress and the Social progress i.e. SMSC, (social, moral, spiritual and cultural). You as parents will have your part to play as ISI issue a parents survey which I hope you will all be able to return. My target for the parent body would be an 80% return rate (most schools when inspected manage 60-65%). Previous surveys of the parents and the pupil show we have a very supportive and involved community and I would very much like the inspectors to pick up on this! The parental survey comes in the form of an with a link attached or it can be printed off and filled in manually and returned to the inspectors at school. I hope that you will want to play your part. We do not know when the inspection will take place. I will receive the phone call on a Monday and the inspection team will arrive on the Tuesday for the remainder of the week. It could be any Monday from now on Future Planning: I am currently trying to press through final planning for a new 6 classroom block to be located where the music practice rooms are. This will be very similar to the senior block and will mean the upstairs bedrooms will no longer need to be used for class teaching. They can be utilised for 1:1 teaching and tutorial support work and for meeting rooms. It is an exciting project that will improve the teaching environment immensely. We are also looking to build a new senior girls changing room at the end of the tennis courts. Planning is about to go in for this and I will keep parents posted. More future planning: The Student Council have decided they would like the Parents Committee to fund a bigger adventure playground. If any parents would like to be involved in this project or in the fundraising for this then the next PC meeting is on Monday at 7.00 in the main school dining hall. All parents are welcome. The Infants are building an igloo..! Please can all parents bring in empty 2lt milk bottles into I1/2...we still require around 100ish to complete the igloo! Thank you. Mr Geisler. 2 Saturday 28th January 9-1pm Watch this space and please be available in the run up to the production for any necessary additional, indeed impromptu rehearsals, should the need arise. Various staff have been supporting the actors and actresses with extra coaching sessions and we would very much appreciate it if you could continue to work with perfecting your child's lines with them. This enables them to focus on practising their roles in the play more naturally. Make up. We have purchased our stage make up, in preparation for 'Dream' and would appreciate it if anyone with any skin sensitivities could let Mrs Heaume know (in writing) if their child has any allergies to stage make up. In this case, please let us know which hypo-allergenic make up would be suitable for them. To minimise any adverse reactions, we will apply barriers, such as Vaseline, as a base. If you would prefer to supply your own eye-liners or make up, please give this to Mrs Heaume clearly labelled with your child's name. Many thanks. Ms. Semczyszyn Music E News: Extra Curricular: Elite Choir is now on Thursday mornings 8:50-9:20am, to allow all pupils to attend assembly on a Tuesday. Please arrive on time to the music room. Just a reminder that Middle School Choir (Years 7-9) starts at 8:50-9:20am every Wednesday morning. Pupils will line up on the playground when the bell goes and form teachers will register them in choir. Production: All students in every choir should have copies of the lyrics that need to be learnt for week beginning Monday 30 th January from that date there will be no words!! If you have misplaced your words, please see Miss Buzzing or Mrs Izod. Musicians for the production will be expected to attend the after school rehearsals every Thursday until 5.30 pm. They will also be required to bring their instruments and relevant music. Peripatetic Music Lessons: Please make sure you are checking your timetable and turning up to lesson at the correct time, with your instruments. Every pupil has an individual timetable. Timetables are also available in the music room, the junior block and upstairs in the main building so there should be no excuses! Congratulations: Congratulations to Infant Choir and Elite Choir who have already learnt their words and actions for the Production! Bravo!

3 Thank you. Miss Buzzing & Mrs Izod News from the Art Department: Artists from Year 10 and 11 visited textile artist Julie Brand this week at her studio in Birlingham near Pershore. Julie told the pupils how she developed her fabric pictures, embroidered art and interiors through hard work and the constant development of her ideas and technical style. Julie continues to make fabric pictures but is also gaining national recognition for her workshops in her own teaching studio. You can see her website (Tigley Textiles). We've gathered a great deal of ideas for techniques we can try back at school and the textile work will be in evidence in our Summer GCSE artists' exhibition. Look out for our forthcoming poster as Bowbrook prepare to launch an invitation to submit art for another exhibition. We will be hosting this exhibition here at school and will be encouraging our pupils to submit work as well as pupils at local schools...watch this space for details of WHAT, WHEN, WHERE and HOW. Mrs. Mellor PE Department News: Results from the past week: National ISA Swimming Gala London Olympic Park: We wish the very best of luck to our two Midlands Swimming champions, Guy Anderson and Jacob Elliott who travel to London this weekend to compete at the ISA national swimming finals. Each are swimming multiple events for the Midlands team and we look forward to hearing how they got in on their return in Monday. Impressively, Jacob is defending his title 2 years in a row as the current National breaststroke champion! Cross-Country County Championships Our support also goes to those that qualified for the County Cross-Country championships which are taking place this weekend in Bromsgrove. Guy Anderson won the district event to qualify but is at the national swimming. Harry Mogg, Morgan Thompson, Hayden Phillips and Henry Rowling will all be competing on Saturday! U11 Rugby V s Heathfield Lost 6 trys to 2 This was a good first contact fixture for the U11 team. Generally, we are made up of mostly year 5 students against mostly year 6 so although we came of second best to a good

4 Heathfield side, it bodes well for the future. There were some positive team developments some individuals particularly stood out: Will Stead made some excellent string runs and was a scorer, Henry Siviter was excellent at tackling throughout and James Bodycote made a fantastic try saving tackling on the opposition s largest player in the last play of the game. Promising stuff and well done to all involved. U9 Football V s Bredon Won 12-1 A bit of a one sided affair from an un-beaten U9 football team and we shall be fielding a slightly different team in next week s return fixture to balance the competition a bit but it was an excellent all-round performance from the team. Dan Curley in defence made some brilliant tackles, as did Tim Grant. 5 goals from Theo Mills, 4 from Tom Allart and 3 from Sebastian Bamford sealed the victory. U11 Football V s Bredon Drew 3-3 This was a tight affair which could easily have gone either way but the boys were disappointed not to have taken the win and travel back to Bredon next week to try and make amends. They boys battled hard and there was some excellent play. One goal each from Max Stephenson, Luke Flowers and Charlie Battin completed the set. U16 Football V s Bredon U18 Won 8-1 It was a tight first half against the physically superior U18 squad. Boobook took an early lead from a great goal by Charlie Siviter in the wing but after that they had multiple chances but couldn t make them stick. Bredon got a runaway goal to keep things even and they went into the half time break at 1-1. Mr Palmer wasn t impressed and gave a stern team talk which clearly did the trick. Bowbrook were on fire, not least through Rory Woof who scored 6 goals! And a final goal from Guy Anderson finishing off the haul. A great game t watch and an outstanding second half team performance. U11 Netball vs Dodderhill: Lost 8-4 The under 11 netball team travelled to Dodderhill to play their A and B team. It took the girls a little time to get used to the indoor court and the speed at which the opposition were playing, finding themselves 5-0 down at half time. After a regroup and a change in tactics and positions the girls started to show their strengths, Daisy Wearing and Holly Allart playing strongly in the centre court to turn the ball over and get it in to the shooters. The second half saw the girls keep Dodderhill s score to 5 and Bowbrook score 1. A final score of 5-1. Against the Dodderhill B team the girls started strongly with Edie Callanan and Jess English playing strongly in defence. The girls found themselves 1-0 up after the first half. The second half was end to end play with strong performances through both teams. With the girls scoring

5 3 and Dodderhill scoring 3 in this half, the final score was 4-3 to Bowbrook. The final score across both games was 8-4 to Dodderhill. The player of the match went to Lottie Wilkinson and Edie Callanan. Well done to all the girls on their first match of the term. U13 Hockey vs RGS The under 13 team travelled to RGS for a rearranged Hockey match on Tuesday. It was a tough afternoon for the team against an extremely strong RGS team. Although the score was very much one sided the girls kept their heads up and didn t give up. Izzie Lewis got player of the match, linking play through the middle of the pitch. The final score was 8-1. U12 Netball vs Bromsgrove: Lost 10-6 The under 12 netball team travelled to Bromsgrove to play their first match of the term. A strong Bromsgrove team awaited them. They soon found themselves 5-0 down after the first quarter but a much better 2 nd quarter saw them score 2 goals. A half time score of 7-2 gave the girls confidence to go out in the second half and claw back some much needed goals. Accurate shooting from Charlie Ball ensured the girls won the third quarter and going in to the final quarter the score was 8-4 to Bromsgrove. Another two goals in the final quarter from both teams gave a final score of Well done to the girls, a tough team to play for their first match of the term. Izzie Lewis got her second player of the match in a week! U16 Netball V Bredon: Lost 13-2 The U16 girls took on visiting opponents Bredon on Wednesday afternoon at home. The average height of the opposing team put our girls at a serious disadvantage from the start but the girls fought hard and their game improved as the match progressed. The match started off with the ball very much in Bredon s attacking half where they dominated possession and intercepted balls that our girls were a little bit too relaxed with at times. As defenders they were hard to mark as the speed of their game was initially a lot faster than ours. In terms of their defensive play, they were quick to turnover possession and converted goals just as quickly. At the end of the first quarter the score was 5-0 to Bredon which made for a difficult start psychologically for our players. In the second quarter Issy Hill played well at centre providing a strong link between the attack and defence. Lauren Billings picked up her game and had the game of her career, giving it everything she had. The game generally went more our way and the girls showed a good level of response to Bredon s initial domination in the first quarter. The third quarter was the same and that ended with the scoreline being The Bowbrook girls were able to slow down the scoring speed significantly after the first quarter which echoes how well they raised their game against a tough opposition. The final score was 13-2 and if nothing else it was a good learning experience on how to play an extremely tall team of girls! The Bowbrook girls did manage to hold their heads up throughout the match which was a tremendous achievement given the scoreline. Well done girls!
