Mayflower Archers Issue No. 14 July 2010 From the Editor Junior News We re now halfway through the outdoor season and some of you have been very busy with competitions so this has given me quite a lot for the tournament round up pages. We had some good results from Havering Youth Games, West Essex Junior invitation shoot and the Essex / Cambridge Inter-counties match where several Mayflower members were selected to represent Essex. It s a long time since Mayflower juniors formed a significant part of a county team, so it s good to see it again. Inside this issue: Tournament Round 2 Tournament Round up continued Tournament report, club & county news Tournament reports & July Nationals JFS & JNOC results 6 Tournament Diary & entries 7 There are quite a few tournaments left so keep up the good work and give lots more to write about. The next issue should include results from Southern Counties FITA Championships at Colchester, Essex FITA, the Southern Counties target championships at Runwell and the Essex FITA Field Championships. Now there s a challenge, enter the Field Champs and you might spot me with a bow in my hand. Yes, mine this time. Mayflower St George, Albion & Windsor shoot 19th June Various award schemes FITA Feather & Arrow awards Club Diary National Awards 8 9 Back page Our third outdoor open event, but the first St. George Open shoot was another success. It was a shame the weather tried to beat us, but being the hardy type of people we are, it didn t stop us enjoying it. This time we awarded medals and was still a good opportunity to make new faces from outside the club and gain a county record. If you entered, did you enjoy it? If not, why not? It was good to see so many shooting above their age group to get some long range practice. Well done to Mayflower juniors who took the opportunity to get some extra tournament practise. Our thanks go to all who helped prepare the field, the judges and Lady Paramount for putting up with us and to the Mums, Grandmas and friends who kept us fed and watered all day long. The results and two sets of photographs can be found on the club web pages. If you did enjoy it, barring the weather, let us know and we might just get the event added to the county calendar.

Tournament Round up Essex County Clout, Woodford Archers 18 th April Not many participants in this, the second round of the County series, since most of us haven t had Clout training. However, James Howell did enter and won Gold in his class. If you came along and enjoyed the clout training session on 28th June, you are now free to the first ever Essex FITA clout hosted by Woodford Archers on 22 nd August. As it is a first, the winners of each class will be able to claim County Records. Get in there and be the first. West Essex Bowmen Double, Double 720 Charity shoot 24 th April (2 days) I m told this is an excellent event and of course an opportunity to get some early season 70m practice, raise money for Essex Air Ambulance and meet new friends. Sounds good to me! Thanks go to Alex Croft, Silver on Saturday, Joe Franklin, Gold and James Howell, Silver on Sunday for making the effort and their part in raising Havering Youth Games - 1 st May Eight members took part this year and so I m told, had a very enjoyable day. No Team prize this year, but most came home with individual Gold or Silver medals. Top score of the day to Joe with 620. West Essex Junior Invitation shoot - 8 th May Page 2 Joe Franklin National Compound Gold Sam Yeates Short National Recurve Gold James Howell Short National Recurve Silver Mark Robinson Short National Compound Silver Ellie Vidgeon-Hart Short National Compound Gold James Gridley Short Jun National Recurve Silver Well done all. See Sam s reports on Page 4 Another Grand Day Out for 10 members shooting National rounds again. With no individual awards to be gained there was only the recurve team trophy to play for, which Mayflower decided was theirs to be won and did, comfortably. Well done James Gridley, James Howell, Sam Yeates and Aaron Gourley. Top recurve scorer was James Gridley with 571 and top compound scorer was Sophie Brown with 604. Team results: Mayflower 1 st 2095 Rayleigh 2 nd 1863 West Essex 3 rd 1563 Broxhill 4 th 1541 Abbey 5 th 1136 Thank you all for making a team to represent Mayflower. Colchester & District, Bill Tucker Memorial shoot 9 th May Having just switched to compound in the last moments of his junior days, Alex croft entered for the York round and won his class with 934. Another PB for you Alex. Alex and Graham Pallett also won Silver medals for club Compound team. Joe Franklin won Gold shooting Hereford and James Howell won Gold shooting a Western round. James also won the Best Gold award. If I ve not included any events it may be because I ve missed them or not been told about them. Please also tell me about your achievements. All articles sent in will be included. Details for sending them are the on back page.

Cambridge v Essex - 23 rd May While some of our members are used to shooting for County, this was a first for Sam Yeates. The County manager fielded six junior archers and three were from Mayflower. Not a bad ratio. I understand that everyone had a good day in one way or another particularly as a long standing County record was broken, Essex won and a six gold end was claimed. I also understand that the seniors did quite well by playing their part in victory. Scores: Seniors: Essex Cambridge Juniors: Essex 5695 Cambridge 5333 See Sam s report on page 5 Abbey Bowmen Albion & Windsor 30 th May Some good results for Mayflower juniors; and a good turnout including seniors. Alex Croft, now shooting Compound wins Gold for shooting an Albion round Ellie Vidgeon-Hart wins Gold medal with 824 for Short Windsor, 64 more points than last year. Is that another County Record Ellie? James Gridley wins Gold with 818 for Junior Windsor. Middlesex County Target Championships 30 th May As ever, James Howell in his usual adventurous way made the trip to Osterley Archers for this record status Rose award tournament. No medals this time, but a close 4th place. Southern Counties, Middlesex FITA Star 31 st May Today it was Sophie Brown s turn to travel to Osterley to represent Mayflower and returned a creditable score for shooting Ladies FITA to win gold. Well done both for your efforts. Essex County Junior Target Championships 12 th June A warm day with sunny spells and a lunchtime treat of the Queen s Birthday fly-past. What more could you ask for apart from some good shooting? Another successful tournament hosted by Noak Hill Archers. Alex Croft Compound Bristol I 1144 Must be a PB Sam Yeates Recurve Bristol II 1041 Bronze. Highest scores were Daisy Clarke, compound with 1276 and Sophie Cole, recurve with 1146 Well done to all. Essex County Senior Target Championships 13 th June Not content with just shooting the Junior Champs, Joe Franklin, Alex Croft, James Howell and Sophie Brown went on to pit their wits against the seniors, improving their scores in the process. Sophie Brown, shooting as a lady, was part of the winning Club Compound team with Mitch & Graham. 4 Sam s reports Havering Youth Games 1 st May 2010 The month of May brought a new junior team together for the outdoor season, commencing with Havering Youth Games, a light hearted and enjoyable shoot for all involved, yet that wouldn t stop Mayflower s desire to win the team trophy for a second year in a row. The weather was kind to us and so was our new J-Lo Neal Howell. We had fun day of shooting and had a laugh at Joe s expense. With his expert shooting skills in order he couldn t keep his arrows out of the gold or the leg at the back of the target, which resulted in removal of the boss from the stand and the stand from the field. Fortunately the field team were able to salvage the arrow. Unfortunately we did not retain the team trophy for another year but came an honourable second with many individual wins. Perhaps next year we will have more luck. From our experiences of the day we did learn that Mr J-Lo likes to delegate certain roles, so watch out team. West Essex Bowmen Junior Invitation 8 th May 2010 With second place the week before the team knew that first place was the only position to come at West Essex. It was an early start for most, except me that is for living round the corner from the field is always helpful. Mayflower dominated the tent line and as soon as everything had been set up the smell of bacon wafted around the field. Unlike the week before we didn t have the same luck with the weather, with showers on and off during the day. Alex decided, at this shoot, he would try his hand at compound, and so borrowed one of Joe s. As you ve probably realised with Joe and Alex both shooting at the same distance, with the same bow, competition was rife. Hence a week later Alex went and bought a compound. After getting wet several times the sun came out for the award ceremony, shining on us and out first place victory. Well done to all the team. Thanks Sam for giving us your time, your viewpoint and putting pen to paper. A bit of County news Sophie Cole and Daisy Clarke, both of Chelmsford Tudor Rose and Jodie Barnes of Priory Bowmen, will be representing England in the Home Nations match at JNOC. Congratulations and good shooting. A bit of Club news Our own Sophie Brown has bee selected to represent England in the Euro-Nations match to be held on 17 th and 18 th July in Belfast. Well done Sophie, it s a long time since a Mayflower member did that. We wish you good shooting. Juniors moving up Our best wishes go to Ben Brown and Alex Croft who are now classed as seniors having had their 18th Birthdays. Ben s birthday was in April and Alex just a few days ago. That means they can supervise you. Watch out! We wish you both good shooting in your senior world and hope you continue to progress. You may also have noticed that Alex has switched to using a compound bow and has done so with some success. Mayflower Archers publish a booklet entitled Welcome to Mayflower Archers. It is a guide to safety, rules, equipment, etiquette, activities and tournaments intended for new members. It is also available to all members, particularly junior members completely free of charge and the 2nd edition is now available. If you would like a copy, talk nicely with Roger Glover and he will give you a copy. Page 4

Tournament report Essex V Cambridge. On the 23 rd of May James Howell, Joe Franklin and I were lucky enough to be asked to shoot for the county. The shoot was at Cambridge, which meant an early start. Although we did not travel together, we were the first to arrive and pitch our tents as per usual. The day was warm, no scrap that, it was bloomin hot with not a single cloud in the sky. It was good to know that the next train-entering platform 1 would be leaving at 12:30 and the train leaving for Newmarket would be arriving shortly. If you hadn t already guessed the field was positioned next to Ely station, which meant we had more spectators than usual. By lunchtime the Essex juniors were ahead by about 200 points. Our confidence was boosted along with our red faces. At this point the pressure was on for me. For 10 looming on a 6 gold end and 50 for 2 in a row I had to pick my game. With the support of the Essex juniors behind me I achieved my first goal of 10 (Ker-Ching). Unfortunately the 50 stayed in my dad s pocket never to been seen again. At the end of the day we were all tired from the early start and 12 dozen worth of shooting. However we had to keep ourselves awake long enough to see who would turn out triumphant. The trophy at that moment said: Essex, Essex, Essex, Essex, Essex, Essex, Cambridge, Cambridge, Essex, Essex, Essex, Essex, Essex, Essex, Essex, Essex and we needed to find out who would have their name on the plaque for Victory! Essex will be put on the trophy once more. Along with a victory for the team we learnt Joe had beaten a county record previously held by Philip Glover for the last 6 years. Well done to all involved and congratulations again to Joe. Thank you again Sam for your excellent series of reports. GNAS July National postal tournament This is a National postal tournament where you can shoot it in the comfort of your own club. Only your best scores will be collected and sent to GNAS to be entered with other juniors around the country. The two National rounds on 10th and 24th July are an opportunity to shoot the round together. If you haven t been able to join in these National rounds or wish to improve your score, you are still able to shoot it any time you like in July so long as a supervising senior is present and willing to sign your score sheet. If you do want to shoot it at your leisure, you may shoot as many times as you wish, but it would make it easier to administer if you used the score sheet supplied by Roger. Hand your scores to Roger or Neal and they will be sent off. Remember, only your best score will be submitted. With any luck, results should be in October Junior News. 6 Junior National Outdoor Championships Lilleshall 3rd & 4 th July Almost a perfect shooting for Saturday s Junior FITA Star and the Home Nations match; warm sunny and only a slight breeze. Not so for Sunday as the wind picked up enough to blow the targets over, fortunately without damage to arrows, but it cause the organisers to change the Target Championship York, Hereford and Bristol round to Western round equivalent. Our team this year were Joe Franklin, Mark Robinson, James Howell, Sophie Brown and Sam Yeates with Alex Croft shooting alongside as an over 18. Few individual results, but some good team awards. Mayflower and significant results given below with full results on found on GNAS / Archery GB website or Roger has a team members have copies to view. 8 Mayflower Distance Awards These are designed for the new archer to measure their own progress in the early stages. When a given score is attained at a given distance, it is understood that you are competent enough to progress to the next distance. Coloured badges are awarded according to the distance shot and all you need to do is shoot 36 arrows and attain a score of 200 with no misses. The awards are: Black 20 yards; White 30 yards; Blue 40 yards; Red 50 yards; Gold 60 yards; Green 80 yards. There is no fee, no judges or supervisor. Just set the stand with a 122 cm face at your chosen distance, starting at 20 yards anytime you like, record your three scores on separate score sheets, keep them and claim your badge from David Scorah. Easy isn t it? Archery GB Progress Awards Mayflower have now subscribed to this award scheme for juniors. It is designed to provide beginners and younger archers with awards for developing their archery skills and the scheme can also be used as an adult beginner incentive. Badges will be awarded by target face colours, white, black, blue, red and gold according to scores. Scores that need to be attained vary according to age, sex, bowstyle and distance shot. They are more applicable to an outdoor range, but as we are shooting outdoors regularly now there will be opportunities to start during the winter months. See David Scorah for full details of scores and how to get them. Archer of the Year Awards In addition to all the awards offered by GNAS Junior Committee, (details on the back page) they have decided make a special award called Archer of the Year. Below is an extract from the website explaining it all. The Junior Committee thought it would be nice to award a Special Award to the Archer of the year. It will be presented annually at the Junior Indoor Championships, to those of you who have supported the indoor and outdoor Junior Championships, and also participated in the July National and November Challenge postal competitions. The winners will be decided on their results by the committee. By way of a starter, Mayflower run the postal tournaments July Nationals and November Challenge so all you have to do to be eligible for this award is to enter the Junior National Outdoor Championships and the Junior National Indoor Championships. Both are well worth entering and I ve had a great time in the past supporting junior members. Some Photo s from Mayflower St. George tournament. Page 8

FITA Beginner s Awards. Feather & Arrow Mayflower Archers have introduced this scheme to assist our new and existing juniors and all beginners, including adults with their development in archery. The FITA Beginner s Award Scheme has been designed to allow beginners in Archery to measure their progress against set standards. Their progress should be encouraged by the clubs and rewarded by the winning of FITA Feather and Arrow pins. The awards are based on three (3) attainments. Performance. Skill. Knowledge & Know How. The awards are split into two categories: 1) FEATHER AWARDS, for the youngest beginners, under 12 years of age and some disabled beginners. (It is up to the club coach to decide on an archer s eligibility). 2) ARROW AWARDS, these are for pre-teenagers, teenagers and adults. (The pre- teenagers will usually have already gained their feather awards). The FITA Beginner s Award Scheme is designed to reward the beginner at the various stages of their development, from shooting at very short distances 6-10 metres, which is dependent on age, to the shortest indoor distance 18 m and even further to near 30m. The size of the target faces will also vary, for feather awards 80 cm spot face or 40 cm face counting hits only, for arrow awards 80 cm full face using conventional FITA scoring. Feather Award Arrow Award To all juniors and adults wishing to apply for this training program please contact David Scorah by scorah1@btinternet.com Or Tel: Page 9

JAWS awards Annually, the junior committee at GNAS run a junior awards scheme (jaws). Trophies are given by GNAS for the winners and runners up claiming the most points in the scheme.
