1 Mayflower Junior Archers From the Editor Junior News Welcome to the new members who ve joined Mayflower Archers over the summer months. The coaches who trained you and members of the Junior Group are always willing to help you in your development and we ll do our best to make ourselves known to you so long as we see you at club. As the end of another outdoor season closes, a look back shows that quite a few of you have won medals, broken county records and gained personal bests. Yes, we ve had a good share of achievements and successes but more importantly, members thoroughly enjoying themselves and taking part in tournaments. Grace and Alex have also done well at the Performance Academy and we hope they continue and wish them all the best for the future. Outdoor season may be over, but there is still plenty going on around and beyond the club. Club nights are on Friday evenings at Mayflower School, the monthly outdoor sessions and a few Fun shoots. Outside the club there are plenty of tournaments for young archers of all level of experience so why not try a few and you ll find all your friends there. Racketts always put on some good shoots as do West Essex, Braintree and most of the local clubs. Whichever you choose, just enjoy yourself as well as getting good sores. 2 Tournament results for Mayflower Southern Counties Junior FITA Champs, Colchester, 12 th July A World record status shoot on our doorstep, a low entry from Mayflower, but good results. Rayleigh Open York, Hereford & Bristol 31 st August Bristol II Alex Body Bronze medal Hannah Godden Bronze medal Bristol III Ethan Barber 3 rd place Emily Mallion Gold medal Then it took 3 juniors to assist Mike Judd to gain silver medals in the recurve team. Also, it took 1 junior to support 2 seniors in the Compound team. Well done our juniors. A little bird has advised me that Emily and her Dad Charles have been touring the country looking for tournaments to enter and have returned some good results be they medals or personal bests. York Archers FITA Fest 23/24/25 th August Emily scored 1113 and 1161 for a Ladies FITA. The total of 2274 for the Double round for a Bronze medal. Then on the Monday she scored 799 for a FITA 900 and 4 th place In the meanwhile, Charles scored 1196 & 1258 Gents FITA, 2454 for Double and then 820 for FITA 900. Meriden Double FITA Star 6 th September Shooting one day only Emily shot 1155 for a Ladies FITA while Charles shot 1266 for a Gents FITA. Then a quick run back from Birmingham to Kingston on Thames enabled Emily take part in the Southern Counties Inter County team shoot 7 th September. There she joined the winning Essex Junior Compound team with 1277 on a Metric 3. Northamptonshire County Championships 14 th September Emily, Bristol III 1224 and Gold medal Page 2 Charles, York 1122 and Gold medal. If these weren t enough, they were at Hampshire Archery Association on 20/21 st September. I don t have the results, but I do know that Emily scored 1198 and 1189 for Ladies FITA rounds. I know I used to do a lot of travelling when my son was trying to achieve, but never we never did all these rounds consecutively. They must be exhausted, but well done to both for their efforts and representing Team Mayflower.
3 Tournament results for Mayflower Southern Counties Inter County team shoot 7 th September Essex won the Junior Compound team Trophy with Luke Wiseman, Rebecca Griffin, Emily Mallion, Alex Rowberry and Jason Tomlin. Essex juniors also won the Recurve team Trophy with Alex Body, Jonathan Tate, Lauren Bann, Grace Butterfield and Rhiannon Easton. Well done everybody! Good shooting Emily! As our latest junior to be selected to represent Essex, Emily Mallion now joins a long line of Mayflower juniors who ve represented the County. FITA Field outings, 23 rd August and 20 th September So did you enjoy a FITA Field round? This was a chance to try something different; targets near the ground and in the woods where trees are likely to walk in front of your arrows, but there s no wind! Before we went, we tried to get some sight marks sorted out since there is a slightly different technique when shooting Field Archery. Having done that, off we went to Panther Bowhunters, the local specialists in field archery for a Saturday afternoon shooting at black targets with yellow spots at different distances and face sizes. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves. I saw some smiling faces and none of you juniors lost any arrows so it was successful in that respect. Only the seniors damaged arrows, one broke two arrows, another who lost two and I got one stuck up a tree. I m lucky, I went back with a ladder on Monday and retrieved it. Unfortunately, I shot a club round on Sunday and suffered the embarrassment of everybody else seeing it. Whether you liked FITA field or not, I hope you all enjoyed the experience. If you do want to try more, a 12 target round is held at Panther from November to March (see page 6). Yes, the outdoor season is just about to begin. Moonlight shoot, Bowmen of Malgrave, 27 th September A very popular shoot for Mayflower members and this year was no different. I m told that this year, there were Six targets of Mayflower mayhem. Sounds interesting shooting at 80 cm faces at 30m in the dark, but we did have more members enter than any other tournament. A good job the targets are floodlit, but how do you tell if your arrows are nocked correctly? There is a way. Although the event is intended for fun shooting, several members returned some good scores. Girl Compound; Emily Mallion 1st, Emily Short 3rd. Boy Compound; Sean Hale 2nd. Girl Recurve; Emily Owens 1st, Natalie Galloway 3rd. Boy Recurve; Kieran Greaves 4th, Nathan Galloway 9th. Boy Longbow; Ryan Bishop 1st. Then of there were the host of senior members all taking part and doing well and having good fun. If you fancy a try, don t forget that we have our own Halloween fun shoot on 1 st November and yes, we do have some floodlights. The targets are not so difficult, but darkness falls as you are shooting. Page 3

6 Winter Leagues Andy Harris League Open to recurve archers of all ages. Turn up on Friday evenings and shoot some arrows. The round is 3 dozen arrows on a 40 cm face at 15 yards. How easy is that? Mike Judd will collect all the scores and send them to the league secretary. Bray and Portsmouth Leagues Shoot a Bray or Portsmouth round (or both) as many times as you like each month and pass your scores to Mike who will enter your best score. Leagues for compound and recurve; open to all archers of all ages, but different leagues for recurve and compound. Perris Archery Junior Indoor League Open to all junior recurve and compound archers. All you need to do is shoot 30 arrows into a 60 cm face at 20 yards. Again Mike will be collecting scores throughout each month. Frostbite League An outdoor postal competition shooting 36 arrows into an 80 cm face at 30 metres. Now how hard can that be? Open to junior recurve archers and senior compound and recurve archers. Lesley will collect the scores and enter the best three in each discipline. So come along for a bit of fun and support your club. Dates for Frostbite shoots are in the club diary (back page). Good shooting, but have fun. And now for something completely different - Winter Field Archery League Organised by GNAS members for GNAS members like us and is good fun for a Sunday morning. To join in, pre book your place at various venues around the South East, including Panther Bowhunters with you equipment, shoot a 12 target round and you ll be home in time for lunch. Your scores may be collected or you can submit them online at such that your best 4 scores are used to gain your overall position in your class. Details and dates for shooting at various venues can be found on www. winterfieldarchery.co.uk and Dates for shooting at Panther Bowhunters are 2nd November. 7th December, 4th January, 1st February and 1st March. Arrive at 9.30 latest for a 10 am start. Arrive earlier and you get unlimited free practice instead of sighters. Contact Neil Bonner at essexarcher@gmail.com There will be a target fee of 3 for seniors, but not for juniors. The chances are that if you shot the county championships, on 5th October, you will already have one score. If you did reasonably well, it would seem a shame to not to continue and gain your rewards. Go on, you know you want to. If you ve never shot a FITA Field round before, I have a booklet to guide you, but that s no good if you don t shoot the round. Page 6

8 Mayflower Distance Awards These are designed for the new archer to measure their own progress in the early stages. When a given score is attained at a given distance, it is understood that you are competent enough to progress to the next distance. Coloured badges are awarded according to the distance shot and all you need to do is shoot 36 arrows and attain a score of 200 with no misses. The awards are: Black 20 yards; White 30 yards; Blue 40 yards; Red 50 yards; Gold 60 yards; Green 80 yards. There is no fee, no judges or supervisor. Just set the stand with a 122 cm face at your chosen distance, starting at 20 yards anytime you like, record your three scores on separate score sheets, keep them and claim your badge from Lesley Howell. Archery GB Progress Awards The scheme is for younger archer to develop their skills and can also be used as an adult beginner incentive. Badges will be awarded by target face colours, white, black, blue, red and gold according to scores attained. Scores can be attained in or outdoors and vary according to age, sex, bowstyle and distance shot. All you need do is to make a note of your 3 dozen scores and submit them to claim the appropriate award. At any round you shoot save your first 3 dozen score, or you may shoot a score at a club meeting (save them on a score sheet) then send then to Kerry Owens at kerry.burnettowens@gmail.com or see her at club. Sounds easy doesn t it? Then get collecting and sending to claim your award. Gift Ideas! Mayflower Archers now offer a Gift vouchers scheme to cover the cost of a Beginner's course at 45. Should a friends or family member fancy trying archery, this could be an ideal Christmas or birthday present for the budding Archer! See David Scorah at club, telephone or contact him at david.scorah@mayflowerarchers.co.uk. Illustration only The FITA Beginner s Award Scheme has been designed to allow beginners in Archery to measure their progress against set standards. Their progress should be encouraged by the clubs and rewarded by the winning of FITA Feather and Arrow pins. The awards are based on three (3) attainments. Performance: Shooting a limited distance with the emphasis on making the target rather than high scores. Skill: Body position, position on line, releasing Knowledge & Know How s: Page 8 FITA Feather and Arrow Awards Range safety, basic bow set up The awards are split into two categories: 1) FEATHER AWARDS, for the youngest beginners, under 12 years of age and some disabled beginners. (It is up to the club coach to decide on an archer s eligibility). 2) ARROW AWARDS, these are for pre-teenagers, teenagers and adults. (The pre- teenagers will usually have already gained their feather awards). Anyone wishing to participate in this programme please contact David Scorah at scorah1@btinternet.com Or telephone him on
