1 House Point Cup Weekly Winners The House Points earned this week were Silbury Ridgeway Kennet Avebury 603pts 583pts 579pts 548pts Congratulations SILBURY Well done everyone! Harvest Assembly Thank you! Thank you so much to everyone who brought in donations to the Foodbank as part of our Harvest Festival Assembly. Rev Gerald England from the Church of Christ the Servant in Abbey Meads created a Harvest Rainbow with fresh fruit and vegetables in the assembly. Thank you to Kerrie Whittaker who also donated a hamper as part of her child minding role in the local community. The food is being transported to the Foodbank this weekend and will benefit many local families. Football 1 st League Win. Congratulations to the football team on winning their first league match of the season, away to Orchid Vale Primary School. The first half was fast and furious with both sides missing several chances, but some excellent attacking on the break and superb finishing saw Orchid Vale reach half time in the lead by 2 goals to nil. The second half saw a change in fortunes and Abbey Meads started to convert their chances scoring five times and conceding only one, to win the match 5-3. ALL PLAYERS were magnificent and won permanent places in the squad for this season with their performances. The assembly started with some wonderful singing and dancing about a child s life in Victorian Britain, before going on to explain how their trip to the Isle of Wight has inspired further work back in the classrooms. We had superbly written diary entries, factual information about the weather, Queen Victoria and the trip itself. There was also a magnificent recital of the poem, The Wreck of the Hesperus by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Thank you to the children of Year 6 YOU are amazing! Thank you to the staff in Year 6 (and other staff who attended the trips) for making all of this possible. Click below for the Trip Photo Booklets. 6 How to Make an Air Pressure Rocket You will need- -A two litre plastic bottle -Cardboard -Tape -A cork (if you can provide one) -Materials for decoration Please note- School will provide the water and foot pump to launch the rocket. We will also provide corks if you do not have one at home. Instructions 1. Cut out three flippers of cardboard and attach these to the top of the bottle with tape. Tape them all to the bottle at an angle of about 120 degrees between them. Remember- Make sure you keep the flippers straight. The flippers must also be sturdy and they should not turn soggy if in contact with water. 2. Turn your bottle upside down so the lid is pointing down and it stands up on the flippers. The flippers will be the base of your rocket. 3. Decorate your bottle as you wish. You can be as creative as you want. However, you must make sure that we can open the lid of the bottle to pour the water in and insert the cork. At school On the day of the launch we will fill the bottle with a small amount of water and insert a cork into the opening of the bottle. We will then use a footpump to pump air into the bottle until it launches. An adult will complete the launching of the rocket for health and safety reasons but the children will be allowed to watch from a safe distance. How it works Rockets work by ejecting something out of the back and a so-called reaction force then pushes the body of the rocket forward. In this rocket, water and air are pushed out of the back. The water is heavier so that s what gives the bottle the main kick forwards. The energy to force the water out is stored as air pressure inside the bottle. The energy is supplied as you pump air into the bottle. The air pressure inside builds up and pushes on the water but friction holds the cork in place and that pushes back on the water, so for a while nothing moves. Once the friction force can no longer contain the pressure, the cork is pushed out and the pressure then acts on the water to eject it from the bottle. Compared to the bottle, the water is heavy so pushing water out at a moderate speed backwards gives the bottle a lot of forward speed. Rockets should only be launched with adult supervision
