2 NATHAN ROBERTSON S COACHING HISTORY COACHES AND INFLUENCES Who is Nathan Robertson? Born on 30 th May 1977 in Nottingham Over 100 England Caps 2006 World Champion Former World Number Olympic Silver Medallist 2010 Commonwealth Games Flag Bearer 2

3 Early Beginnings! Nathan first picked up a racket to play badminton when he was six years old Using a cut down racket (no shaft!) because a full size racket dragged on the floor as he was so small Nathan s parents played to a decent Club level, they had met at a badminton club Nathan s older brother (Adam 4 ½ years older) represented England at Junior level from U12 to U18 Early Beginnings! June Robertson ran a badminton group at the local Community Centre in Cotgrave (near Nottingham), two hours on Sunday mornings Local boys and their friends went along, 0.10p a session, all they needed was trainers, rackets were provided by the Centre Sessions were based on loads of games and fun, John and June did a lot of the coaching 3

4 Early Beginnings! Nathan got interested as he followed Adam by going to the sessions Adam was always a good role model for Nathan! Adam was starting to play to a good level when he played in a junior club match against Emma Herrity, Peter Herrity s daughter, after this Adam was invited to the County Junior sessions which Peter coached Next Steps! Adam (age 12) and Nathan (age 7) played together for the first time in the Nottinghamshire U12 County Championships Nathan was much smaller than the net! Opponents were trying to not hit to Adam but when Nathan got the chance he would stick is racket up and jump and whack the shuttle downwards.. they won! 4

5 Peter Herrity Peter was the coach for the Nottinghamshire County Juniors He is one of the main people who should be credited behind the strength of boys that have been developed in Nottinghamshire Adam was invited to the County Junior Sessions Peter got to know Nathan at about eight years old when Adam came to his training Peter Herrity Peter got Adam training with Roger Mistry ENG Junior That led to Peter training Nathan with Roger two strong talents! Nathan was small but had very good hand-eye coordination Nathan benefitted tremendously from training with Roger in this environment! 5

6 Ian Clark As Nathan developed he got to know Anthony Clark (six months younger than Nathan) Anthony s father (Ian) was a well respected County player for Derbyshire, he started coaching the two boys when Nathan was about 13 years old Anthony and Nathan got to know each other very well! Ian aimed to get the boys to understand the physical side of the game the mental side of physical aspects Ian Clark Nathan was not always in the mood for the sessions which made me think! However, he was keen on competitive games and playing shots. Nathan was very talented and had something a little bit special in the way he played, trained and conducted himself! Ian introduced them to Senior Club leagues, playing against old timers and people who had answers to their skills. they lost a lot to start with! 6

7 Andy Wood Andy first met Nathan at an East Midlands Training session Impossible to have predicted the outcome to their coaching relationship where Nathan has achieved! Andy was involved in the Olympic coaching set up when Nathan got introduced into the sessions as a 18 year old Andy has been involved at various levels since the 1996 Olympics and was Olympic Head Coach at 2004 & 2008 Ray Rofe Ray was a Junior Selector when Nathan was U16 Ray and Barbara Jones selected Nathan for the Venlo Tournament his first selection We felt he was capable of winning stuff with Gail Emms in mixed doubles Could see the talent and we felt he was coming good! Nathan won the Venlo mixed and doubles 7

8 Junior Play! The overall impression that coaches had of Nathan was that he was flamboyant, skilful and really enjoyed the game! He was laid back and happy-go-lucky, but always friendly! After 17 years of age Nathan only played doubles events in tournaments Sometimes it was torture watching him play singles! June Robertson Into the Seniors By the time Nathan was Nathan was 18 years old he had been given an opportunity to train with the Senior National Team He wanted to play full-time and followed the advice of a tutor from School formerly a good table tennis player who hadn t followed his dream! He moved himself to Milton Keynes and trained with the top English players.. Nathan knew this was right for him! Training with: Nick Ponting, Chris Hunt, Simon Archer, John Quinn, Ian Pearson, James Anderson 8

9 Park Joo Bong Park was retired when he came to England but still one of the best in the World. Park was English Head Doubles Coach when Nathan started training with the seniors Park saw the ability in Nathan straight away When young he was often unstable and needed good support from the other players Very creative but a bit of a loose cannon! Park Joo Bong Nathan could read players well, he knew what his opposition were going to do and what they could do! Early on the Asian players tried to challenge him mentally and frustrate Nathan so he couldn t play at a high level.. he s so much better now! Park rates Nathan as one of the best mixed players Europe has produced, if not the best!! 9

10 Rexy Mainaky Park left England in 2002 and was replaced by Rexy Rexy was perfect for Nathan as he was so relaxed as a player and technically good, they got on well! Nathan was by now established as a senior player and found a good relationship with Rexy Rexy Mainaky Nathan has so much ability, he can almost do whatever he likes on a court! He uses his reach and height well but his vision makes him hard to beat Opponents mustn t allow to dictate and dominate the game.. or be good in the first four shots He is one of the best Europeans ever and great to work with.. a challenge but great! 10

11 World Level Nathan developed rapidly into a World Class doubles and mixed player His skill level is high and could clearly read the game well He made himself difficult to beat and seemed to study opponents while playing against them.. saving the knowledge for next time! Asian players often struggled with his level of creativity and vision to find spaces on a court Andy Wood The two have developed a very close relationship with clear boundaries, Andy is a big mentor for Nathan Andy understands Nathan how he works, learns, interprets and retains information Andy encouraged Nathan to be creative Nathan has the ability to see it, watch it, do it! 11

12 Julian Robertson Julian was Nathan s first partner when Nathan joined the senior players Julian became a close friend and influence on Nathan while he moved from a junior player to world class Julian is now an English National Coach and in more recent years has become Nathan s coach alongside Andy Wood, working with him on a daily basis Influence of others Numerous other players and coaches have been significant influences on Nathan: Simon Archer Chris Hunt Gail Emms Anthony Clark Adam Robertson brother and major role model 12
