2 Nou're right Bob Aeareer ic used to be unthinkable Toc4y it's a big exciting industry," Page 2 Nobody quite knows how many different occupations there are, but it runs to several thousands Think about your dad's time That was before R& D Departments, real electronics, motels or mass media Today, a young man can make his way with ambition and a natural talent that will buy him success and satisfaction Of course, it's more than just desire and flair; he has to work hard but he's doing something he enjoys An AMP man understands that After all, he's doing something that uses his own talents and he likes it Talk to an AMP man Tell him where you fit into life and he'll tell you how a sound insurance plan can fit in too where policyholders' money is invested in projects which benefit Australia E609G THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER--JULY 12, GEELON-G GIVE ST BERNARD'S A FRIGHT ORMOND DOWN TO OLD TRINITY - 1 PT Blacks hold off North's challenge By GEORGE McTAGGART Bottom team Geelong, who have not won a match, veary nearly caused an upset last week when they ran the leaders, St Bernard's, to a goal It was easily Geelong's best performance for the season Ormond suffered their third successive defeat when they went down by a point to Old Trinity in a real thriller Trinity are now just outside the four on percentage North Old Boys made a strong last quarter bid for victory against University Blacks but failed to get there by four points Of North's five defeats this season, three have been by less than a goal AND THEN THERE WERE NONE -After 11 rounds, there is not one undefeated team in the competition The last to go were Monash Whites who were beaten by Bulleen United, the margin being 25 points St Bernard's put on 7 goals in the second quarter to lead Geelong by 17 points at the interval and looked to be in for at least a comfortable win But Geelong held the leaders to one goal in the third term and got on level terms at the last change The last quarter was a thriller but St Bernard's greater experience and extra touch of class enabled them to hold off the tenacious Geelong and win by 6 points What are the odds against a team bein g a point in front at half-time three-quarter-time and at the final siren? Well that's what happened in the Ormond-Old Trinity game, with Trinity being in the fortunate position It was one of the most remarkably even matches imaginable with little between the scores all day Even at the first break, the difference was only 4 points - in Trinity's favour Two goals in the first minute of the second quarter enabled University Blacks to wipe off their 11-point deficit at quarter-time and they were never headed after that THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-JULY They lead by 8 points at the interval and looked in a strong position with a 3-goal advantage at three-quartertime North put in a strong last quarter, kicking 5 goals, but the Blacks were able to hold off the challenge and score by 4 points Reservoir Old Boys' effective handball and the brilliance of their small men were too much for Monash Blues, who were beaten by more than 7 goals, while Old Paradians failed miserably against Coburg, kicking only 4 points in the second half Caulfield Grammarians wilted against De La Salle in the second half after being only a point down at the interval, and were beaten by just over 10 goals It was their second successive defeat and they have dropped to fourth Marcellin's hopes of making the finals received a setback when they crashed against University Blues who won by more than 12 goals Collegians beat Old Carey by a goal, Old Scotch were too strong for Old Haileybury and Ivanhoe were not troubled to beat Kew by 9 goals 2, 1975 Page 3

3 St Kilda CBC, who won the first nine games, were beaten again, this time by Parkside who scored by 15 points They have lost top place to Old Ivanhoe, who won easily from Brunswick Melbourne High beat Alphington by 29 points and Uni High kept in the running with a 20-point win over Old Brighton Fawkner Pipped Old Xaverians by 3 points in a high-scoring affair (20-13 to 20-10) Assumption beat Old Camberwell by 16 points, while State Savings Bank, Hampton Rovers and Old Geelong all won comfortably AJAX held top place after a close struggle with AMP Society, winning by 9 points, and LaTrobe Blacks beat St Bede's by 19 points St Pat's-Monivae had the same winning margin over Old Mentonians and Elsternwick beat West Brunswick by 27 points Heatherton beat Thornbury by nearly 10 goals and edged Monash Whites (beaten by Bullen United) out of top place Footscray Tech scrapped home by a point from Glenroy Ivanhoe thrashed Ormond in the main Junior Section game and Coburg were not really troubled by Old Scotch In Section 2, North Old Boys beat Reservoir Old Boys by 10 points, and the other winners were Bulleen- Templestowe, Hamtpon Rovers, Thomastown and Old Carey There were some interesting results in the Reserves - Old Paradians ran Coburg to 11 points, North Old Boys easily beat a weakene d AS USED BY THE CHAMFiOtdS Blacks, De La Salle failed by 13 points against Caulfield Grammar, University Blues were well beaten by Marcellin, St Kilda CBC had another close call, beating Parkside by 10 points (Parkside's kicking losing it for them) Fawkner trounced Old Xaverians, State Bank crashed against St Kevin's, Elsternwick beat West Brunswick by 14 points, AJAX went down to AMP by 7 goals, Monash Whites beat Bulleen United by 13 points and Glenroy beat Footscray Tech, by 4 points TRIBUNAL QJUNE 28th ROUND) B Dowell (Reservoir Old Boys) was found guilty of kicking P W Richardson (Ormond) and suspended for twelve matches J Williams (Alphington) was found guilty of striking R Johnson (Brunswick) with the elbow and suspended for two matches P Robinson (St Pat's-Monivae O C) was found guilty of striking B A Irving (St Bede's O C) and suspended for six matches R Seath (Coburg Reserves) was found guilty of striking P Day (Old Trinity Gramm Reserves) and suspended for six mathces R Hager (University Blues Reserves) was found guilty of striking M Heaton (Old Scotch Coll Reserves) with the elbow and suspended for four matches S Athens (Commonwealth Bank Reserves) was found guilty of striking J Maguecio (Old Xaverians Reserves) and suspended for four matches J Clampett (St Pat's-Monivae OC Reserves) was found guilty of disputing decisions, using abusive language to the umpire and using threatening language to the umpire, (and was ordered off the field for the last offence) and was suspended for a total of eighteen matches S Richardson (St, Pat's-Monivae O C Reserves) was found guilty of disputing decisions and using abusive language to the umpire and was suspended for four matches A RENA SPORTING FOOTWEAR LOU ZACHARIAH Makers of Football Boots, Athletic Shoes, High Leg Boxing Boots, Cricket Boots, Football Umpire Boots and Gymnasium Boots ~p il~~'1t `Lt`r7 f ~:~ ~~ 71RES On :- mnd of first named Club at 2 pm Reserves at am Likely vanners of Senior and Junior mail-hes in Bold Type Umpire for Reserves shown in brackets A SECTION Old Trinity Gramm v North Old Boys - 4 LOOKING By Noel Rundle 5 Years Ago De La Salle kept close to the four when in a low-scoring game they defeated Old Paradians by a point Halasa, Cooke, Lynch (De La Salle) and Johnson, Grindlay, and Kendall for Old Paradians were best Guyon Wilson celebrated his 100th game for Geelong by winning the Solomon Trophy for best player Old Brighton were proud to announce the opening of their new clubrooms, the culmination of many years' hard work by the Committee Old Xaverians (eighth in B Section) surprised Univ Blacks (third with only one defeat) to only go down by 7 points in a lowscoring game, 55 (35) to 6 6 (42) 10 Years Ago George Mehl played his 100th consecutive game for AJAX Commonwealth Bank welcomed back from overseas Alan Kirby, holder of the record for the number of games Alan told all present that he had 10 years 'footy left in him' (Where are you now, Alan? - Ed ) Collegians and Univ Blacks played the match of the day with teams as follows:- Collegians : B Lucas, Ferguson, W Roach; HB Webster, G Daff, Tweedle ; C Woods, Tucker, Read; H F Lugg, C Roach, Edwards ; Fwds L Hibbins, D Walduck, Boag; Fall Symons, Hayes; Rover Dunn 19, 20 Powell, Andrews Univ Blacks - B Nation, Whitford, Barker; H B Blazey, Carberry, Nicholls; C Lee, Reynolds, Fleming ; H F Sinclair, Porter, Saunders; F Tuck, Browne, Galbraith; Foil Burston, Shackletom Rover Wilson 19, 20 Burke, Crawford Graham Brewer, best and fairst in 'C' Section in 1963 and 'D' Section (1964) and captain of National Bank, played his 100th game for the club Aiphington thanked Bill Usher, a spectacular mark and a very good kick' for his 100 games I SINCE 1845 Telep4mne'i:Reli-)emrrlo 60-9:;7 1 ; r''s:~ BOB CO~~~ ; 1 ~ u~!1 M (MEMBERS V AFA) Guest speaker at Old Scotch's annual dinner was Brian Dixon Melbourne High took fourth place from Old Xaverlans with a 62-win -(Colin Green kicked 10 goals) while Ian Turnbull, Bob Tredennick, Trevor Read and Geoff Paul were other stars 25 Years Ag o It had to happen! Ormond, going for the straight dozen, were outpaced outmarked, outstayed, and outmanoeuvred, to go down by 7 points to Old Scotch - Final scores 913 to 812 Old Scotch won the game in the first quarter when they scored 4 9 to 02 Best were - Geer, Bate, Morone (Old Scotch) and K Robinson, Rundle, Hardy (for Ormond) In the battle of top sides in 'B' Section, Collegians also inflicted the first defeat on Commonwealth Bank - leading from halftime, and finally winning 1018 to 8 13 Best for Collcgians were Brian Judd, Warren Judd, Greg Buckeridge while David Kerr showed pleasing form in his first match for the season Ted Thomas, Alan Shiel, and Ian Bailey were best for Bank who were unlucky to lose Alan Kirby with a broken leg ST BERNARD'S FULL-BACK REACHES 100 All at St Bernard's congratulate Ray King on playing his 100th game against Geelong last Saturday Since joining the club Ray has been a mainstay in the first XVIII and has played in all key positions on the back and forward lines as well as on the ball Because of his habit of leading with his head, coupled with his fearless play, Ray unfortunately has missed a number of games through injury This year he has taken on the role of full back and his clearing dashes and beautiful kicking is one of the main reasons for the club enjoying such a successful year Congratulations "Kingy" the committee and all players and supporters hope to watch you beating all full forwards for a number of seasons to come SHI WARNING It's happened again at Royal Park, las t S4turday thieves went through the dressing rooms and stole clothes belonging to the fieid and boundary umpire Fortunately the writer arrived and having had some experience at similar incidcnts in this area, was able to find all their clothes intact - they really went for the taps this time as the field umpire was "his worship" the Mayor of Doncaster - (they (acin't touch his horse) Do not LEAVE YOUR CLOTHES IN UN- I,OCKED ROOMS I was amazed last Saturady when, during a reserves game, the full back when kicking off did so by giving a small kick clear of, hand and foot inside the kick off lines The poor umpire was soundly roasted by supporters for allowing this type of kick- 07, claiming that the ball must be kicked over the kick off line Law 8C states - the bail shall be kicked clear of hand and foot not necessarily over the kick off lines, and once kicked shall be deemed to be in play Thought for the week - Never argue with nor abuse the umpire lie is doing his best, although it may be a poor best Here's there for the day, so adapt your play to his umpiring, and get on ith the game (Otherwise you could get a "holiday" refer Tribunal report in this issue - Ed ) SPORTS DAY Well the top sportsmen of our Association have at last emerged What a day - Brian Goodman, played tennis wearing his Brunswick Amateur Football jumper engineer Gerald Minson played whilst smoking a pipe, and Gary Nichol ELSTERNWICK PARK MATCHES "did his cool' 'and threw his tennis racquet into a neighbours back yard after Tom Cunneen had "aced" him Newcomer Geoff Kelly swept all opposition aside and easily won the squash championship Alan Bishop was runner-up The tennis title was more evenly contested and was eventually won by Philip Rowell and Gary Nichol who defeated Don Doods and Andrew Burridge 6/4 in the final Simon Marks didn't endow himself to the coach when he defeated him in the singles (If you see Simon named emergency umpire for the next 3 or 4 weeks you will know why ) The old reliabies Dressing, Hill, Mason, were all soundly defeated in first round matches In the final of the doubles district fast bowler Andy Burridge thought he was doing just that and served that way - unfortunately they were all out of court On the girls' side Susan Rowell was the best teams player, whilst Lois Mason was tops on the squash court All had a great day and thanks to Simon Marks who alone arranged the day All winners were presented with beautiful clocks donated by Mr Marks - Simon's father - a most thoughtful gesture NEW ADDRESSES - PHONE NUMBERS MARCELLIN OC (T F Naughton) - Phone (home) or Ext 372 (Day) OLD CAREY GRAM (J B Goode) - Phone (home) UNIVERSITY REDS (C Sinn) - 76 Power St, Hawthorn, 3122 (Phone ) Matches to be played at Elsternwick Park for the remainder of the season are shown hereunder: July 12 - University Blacks v Geelong *July 19 - Old Carey Gramm v Caulfield Gramm July 26 - Old Trinity Gramm v St Bernard's OC August 2 - Monash Blues v Old Trinity Gramm August 9- Old Paradians v Ormond August 16 - Ormond v University Blacks August 23 - Reservoir Old Boys v Coburg * Indicates B Section match THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JULY 12, 1975 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - JULY 12, 1975 Page 7
