PIUS X 41 DECATUR 14 It wasn't quite deja vu, but when St. Pius X beat Decatur to close the regular season and earn an eighth straight trip to the playoffs, it was plenty similar to their game a year earlier. The Golden Lions (7-3, 4-2 Region 6-AAA) kind of tottered around early before using their passing attack to break open the game before falling back on the 160 rushing yards of junior fullback Dalton Wilson to salt it away. Defense was a big, big factor, too, because SPX outgained the Bulldogs (7-3, 3-3) by a modest yardage count, yet stiffened at several key times to keep points off the scoreboard. St. Pius looked more like itself Friday after consecutive losses. We knew we should have won those games, Wilson said. It was the chip on our shoulder that Pius usually plays with that we hadn't really had. It took that punch in the mouth for us to step up and really play like we should. Decatur opened with a seven-play, 56-yard drive that brought fourth-and-1 at the SPX 12-yard line. The Bulldogs were going to go for it. A delay-of-game penalty pushed them back, but the went again anyway. Wilson sacked quarterback Devontae Carter, and that was that. This should have been every game so far, and it took two losses, which it shouldn't have, Wilson explained. But this is how Pius plays. This was not: the Golden Lions fumbled the ball away a few plays later before the SPX defense held again, and forced a punt. Then, SPX went deep. Sophomore quarterback Reed Egan, who had replaced junior starter Joey Connors on the Lions' first possession for a few plays and then again after Connors muffed a toss, threw over the middle to Fred Dorsey, who was roaring downfield almost by himself. One 75-yard touchdown pass later, St. Pius led 7-0, and the Lions built the lead to 10-0 on Thomas O'Leary's 46 yard field goal early in the first quarter. Dorsey had a hand in that, too, as he recovered a Decatur fumble from his cornerback position to set up position. Safety Nick Ruffin forced the mistake. The Bulldogs, much improved this season under first-year coach Brad Waggoner they did, after all, hand region champion Blessed Trinity its only league loss pulled within 10-7 on an SPX mistake. Nobody covered freshman wide receiver Dennis Bell, and he caught Carter's 27- yard pass with ease.

2 Again, St. Pius would go to the air for comfort, but not without ground support first. After seven straight runs netted 32 yards, Connors threw to the goal line. There, sophomore running back Ransom Klinger jumped to win a ball from a Decatur defender, and with 5:36 left in the first half, St. Pius led 17-7 on that 25-yard completion. Connors would complete 2-of-3 passes for 43 yards and that score. Egan was 1-for-2 for 75 yards. Decatur pushed back all the way to the SPX 15, but third and fourth downs, cornerback Branden Mitchell and linebacker Garrett Gooden deflected consecutive passes to all but end the half. St. Pius dominated the second half, going touchdown-touchdown-field goal on its first three possessions. Gooden added a 30-yard interception return for a late score. Wilson's 50-yard touchdown run up the middle in the third quarter was a beauty. He broke a couple tackles, shed another downfield, and took off as if a rocket. The Lions will open the playoffs at Hart County, near the South Carolina line. After consecutive region losses to Woodward Academy and Blessed Trinity in games where SPX just didn't seem quite right on either side of the ball, the Lions looked more like themselves in beating Decatur. Perhaps momentum has turned. I'm so happy for these seniors, who've struggled these last two weeks, said coach Paul Standard. They all have, but these seniors bear the brunt of whatever happens. I did not want them to be the first class in eight years not to make the playoffs. So I'm happy for them, and I'm happy for how they battled. I hope it's a boost of confidence for them because they played hard and we played well.
