1 2013 T OYO TA A F L G R A N D FI N A L Mission possible for Hawks Hawthorn atoned for the heartache of the previous two seasons to claim its 11th premiership in HOWA R D KOT TON T he Hawks were men on a mission in Their loss to the Swans in the 2012 premiership decider, a year after a heart-breaking preliminary final defeat to Collingwood, burned deep in their psyche and they were hell-bent on redemption. With a strong wind swirling around the MCG making it difficult to execute skills with precision, many thought conditions on Grand Final day would suit Fremantle s tactics of strangling its opposition and dilute the effect of Hawthorn s pinpoint delivery by foot. But it was clear early the Hawks were not fazed by the conditions or the Dockers pressure as they tackled and harassed their opponents with vigour. Hawthorn negated the influence of the biggest man in the game, Aaron Sandilands. Fremantle dominated the hit-outs (55-27), but the Hawks won the clearance count Apart from a brief period in the third quarter, Hawthorn s multi-pronged attack functioned better than the Dockers. But the Hawks were not relying on Coleman medallist Jarryd Roughead or Lance Franklin to do most of the scoring. Their most effective forward was former Crow Jack Gunston. He kicked the first goal of the match from a 30m set shot and added two more in the second quarter the first on the run from just inside 50m and the second from a strong mark over Zac Dawson. His contribution was vital in a low-scoring encounter as the wasteful Dockers were restricted to one goal, from Tendai Mzungu, for the half. Fremantle skipper Matthew Pavlich and small forward Michael Walters, both quiet in the first half, led a revival in the third quarter as the Dockers drew within three points before another clever snap goal from Gunston gave the Hawks breathing space. Hawthorn opened up a 30-point margin as goals to Isaac Smith (from 55m), Luke Breust and Bradley Hill sealed the premiership. The fallout saw CEO Steven Trigg and football manager Phil Harper suspended and the club fined. The hits before round one continued when strategy and innovation coach Dean Bailey was banned for 16 weeks for his involvement as senior coach in Melbourne s 2009 performance investigation. Things failed to improve for the Crows on the field with a first-up loss to Essendon and then surrendering a big lead to Port Adelaide in round three. But the season took a serious turn for the worst in round five when star full-forward Taylor Walker badly injured his knee and was ruled out for the rest of the year. Walker s injury was followed by setbacks to Josh Jenkins, Brent Reilly and Aidan Riley, while several others also missed chunks of football. The only silver lining out of 2013 was the emergence of several of the club s youngest players. Brad Crouch was brilliant in his debut year, finishing runner-up to Gold Coast s Jaeger O Meara in the NAB AFL Rising Star award, while defensive duo Rory Laird and Luke Brown and midfielder Sam Kerridge received nominations. Despite the ordinary season, there was enough to suggest the Crows are capable of turning things around quickly. The recruitment of James Podsiadly and Eddie Betts will immediately strengthen the forward line, which will reduce the pressure on Lewis Johnston, Tom Lynch and Jenkins. The club was thrilled to snare Crouch s younger brother Matt at pick No. 23 at the NAB AFL Draft. The two become the first pair of Crows brothers since Andrew and Darren Jarman played alongside each other in Most Adelaide players would look to improve dramatically on their 2013 efforts and, with an injury-free pre-season, there is no reason to expect anything less than a top-eight finish. 5 THE CLUBS PLAYER PROFILES DENNIS ARMFIELD The speedy stopper last year won a new two-year deal after performing some impressive negating roles on opposition playmakers, including Adelaide superstar Patrick Dangerfield. The West Australian continues to earn respect at Carlton for his manic team-first approach and hardness. Played every game for the first time in his six seasons with the Blues and contributed a career-high 17 goals. Draft history: 2007 NAB AFL Draft 3rd round selection (Carlton) No. 46 overall. TOM BELL The strongly built inside midfielder from Queensland earned promotion to the Blues senior list after showing great promise during two seasons as a rookie. Given his chance at senior level late in 2012, he struggled for a senior game in 2013 despite strong form in the VFL. A good contributor in the last five games, including two finals, he is firmly in the running for a more regular role in With his raw athleticism and playing style, he reminds some of club great Anthony Koutoufides. Draft history: 2012 Rookie Draft selection (Carlton) No. 14; 2013 NAB AFL Draft rookie elevation (Carlton) selection No. 94. JOSH BOOTSMA Despite signing a new two-year deal in late August, the West Australian explored the possibility of returning to his native state after his name was on the trade table. In his second season in 2013, the lightly built defender/wingman played nine games, to add to the five he played in his debut year. Worked on becoming more versatile and playing taller was tried on Richmond spearhead Jack Riewoldt in round 21. Needs to develop more body strength, but boasts considerable speed for his height, good hands and penetration in his kicking. Draft history: 2011 NAB AFL Draft 1st round selection (Carlton) No. 22 overall. DYLAN BUCKLEY The son of Carlton s triple premiership great Jim Buckley will be hoping to build on a second season in which he made early inroads. Broke into the Blues line-up for his AFL debut in the round three loss to Geelong at Etihad Stadium and snapped a terrific left-foot goal just 18 seconds after being subbed on to the field. However, it proved his only appearance. In 15 VFL games, the light-framed speedster kicked 13 goals and averaged 14.6 disposals and three tackles. His year was ended by a late-season shoulder injury that required surgery. Draft history: 2011 NAB AFL Draft 3rd round father-son selection (Carlton) No. 62 overall. ANDREW CARRAZZO The veteran tagger started last season with unprecedented optimism, but ultimately 2013 proved one of the most trying of his career. After signing a two-year contract extension and being appointed joint vice-captain with Kade Simpson, he suffered calf injuries that restricted him to just five of the Blues last 19 games. Although he has played only 24 games in the past two seasons, no one would count against the tough 30-year-old making a return to prominence in Likely to be played in a variety of roles, given the development of Ed Curnow as a midfield stopper. Player honours: best and fairest 2007; pre-season premiership sides 2005, Brownlow Medal: career votes 18. Draft history: 2002 Rookie Draft selection (Geelong) No. 5; 2004 Rookie Draft selection (Carlton) No. 2; 2004 rookie elevation (Carlton). LEVI CASBOULT The strong-marking forward/ruckman made significant progress after being elevated from the Blues rookie list, playing 11 games and kicking seven goals, including three in the round 21 win over Richmond. Had the Blues best contested-mark average (2.3) and was third in contested marks. However, he could not maintain his place on a consistent basis as Carlton searched for a viable key-forward combination. Is working hard to improve his kicking. Draft history: 2010 Rookie Draft selection (Carlton) No. 44; 2012 NAB AFL Draft rookie elevation (Carlton) selection No. 89. PATRICK CRIPPS The Blues first-round pick is a midfield bull from East Fremantle nicknamed The Extractor and compared to AFL great Greg Williams for his clearance ability and vision. After missing much of 2012 with a broken leg, the powerful, big-bodied Cripps earned All-Australian honours after averaging 6.2 clearances at the 2013 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships. A cousin of West Coast player Jamie Cripps, he grew about 15cm in the two years before he was drafted. Draft history: 2013 NAB AFL Draft 1st round selection (Carlton) No. 13 overall. ED CURNOW Produced a career-best season last year, comfortably finishing fourth in the club best and fairest. Carlton s best endurance runner, he was overlooked for the opening three games, but played the next 21 to become the first Blue to notch 50 games as a rookie. With chief tagger Andrew Carrazzo sidelined, Curnow performed some superb stopping jobs that won votes in the coaches award. Second at Carlton for hard-ball gets and the winner of the best clubman award, he injured a knee in the semi-final loss to the Sydney Swans. Draft history: 2008 Rookie Draft selection (Adelaide) No 40; 2011 Rookie Draft selection (Carlton) No. 18; 2013 NAB AFL Draft rookie elevation (Carlton) selection No. 89. SAM DOCHERTY The former Brisbane Lion joins the club he supported as a boy after being sought by several clubs in his home state of Victoria. With his anticipation, poise and running power, the 20-year-old is expected to develop into a quality half-back and midfielder. After injury hampered the first-round pick s debut season with the Lions, he showed great promise in playing 13 games in a breakthrough 2013 season. Player honours: Brisbane Lions pre-season premiership side Previous AFL club: Brisbane Lions (2013: 13 games, 1 goal). Draft history: 2011 NAB AFL Draft 1st round selection (Brisbane Lions) No. 12 overall; 2013 NAB AFL Draft traded by Brisbane Lions for No. 33 (Tom Cutler). NICK DUIGAN Picked up as a mature-age recruit in the 2010 national draft, Duigan had a tough time in 2013 and finally a knee injury forced him into retirement. Played just three games in the minor rounds in 2013, but was a late call-up for the elimination final win over Richmond, when he bagged four goals in an unfamiliar forward role. Started pre-season training to prepare for 2014 but club doctors said his knee would not stand up to the rigours of another season and he retired last December. Remains on the Blues list, paving the way for them to upgrade a rookie. Brownlow Medal: career votes 2. Draft history: 2010 NAB AFL Draft 4th round selection (Carlton) No. 70 overall. DAVID ELLARD The diminutive midfielder started his 2013 pre-season campaign full of promise, but was derailed by hamstring and calf injuries that restricted him to just three AFL appearances. An emergency for the Blues in both finals, the former rookie is a ball-winner and a tagging option, but faces a crunch time after managing just 40 games in five years at the club. 74 AFL RECORD SEASON GUIDE visit afl.com.au AFL Record Season Guide 2014.indb 74 17/01/14 4:52 PM
