2 Working as a Team GAA & OUR SPONSORS CLG Thír Eoghain working to develop and promote Gaelic games and to foster local identity and culture across Tyrone Tyrone s social, community, economic and Gaelic futures all depend on the 20,000 children who attend our Primary and Secondary Schools. Along with their parents, guardians, other family members and, very importantly, their teachers, they ll shape the Tyrone that will face what life brings on through the 21st century. Le chéile ar son Thír Eoghain Coiste Chontae Thír Eoghain CLG wishes to acknowledge the generous financial support provided towards its County Teams and the Association in Tyrone for from all of its sponsors. Tyrone GAA is about helping our young people to be proud and content about Who they are and Where they re from. The Red Hand Fan is aimed at every six-to-sixteenyear-old in Tyrone who s interested in Gaelic games. It s good for all of us that they play, attend and above all enjoy our games. It s particularly good that they re supported so well in all that by their families and teachers. This year we re back in Division 1 of the Allianz League as reigning Ulster Senior Champions. We look forward to your stalwart support as we face the many challenges ahead. Casaimis an eochair let s get started! 3 4 SEAN Cavanagh After a successful 2016 which saw the Anglo Celt Cup come back to Tyrone for the first time in six years, we enter with a strong Tyrone squad that are hungry for more success. It s always great to test yourself against the best and, after getting out of Division 2 at the first attempt, our return to Division 1 of the Allianz League certainly gives us that opportunity. As well as the usual tough derby games with our Ulster neighbours Monaghan, Cavan and Donegal, we welcome Roscommon and Mayo to Healy Park and are looking forward to trips to Dublin and Kerry. We ve had close battles with these sides in the recent past and know the quality they have but we re looking to continue to build on the progress we made in We know we have a very loyal support that follows us throughout Ireland and I look forward to this continuing all through. MICKEY Harte As you know we take enormous pride in the fact that we take every game seriously and we always set out with the mentality that we want to win every game. That mind-set will not change as we prepare for this year s Allianz League programme. We re delighted to be back in Division 1 and the challenges that come with it. We were unbeaten in Omagh throughout 2016 and that s a record we are aiming to emulate come this year s league programme. Roscommon, Cavan, Monaghan and Mayo will provide formidable opposition as usual. We are also keenly anticipating our trips to meet Dublin, Donegal and Kerry. Over the years the Tyrone faithful have followed us in such brilliant numbers all over the country. Bring as many people out to these games as you can. Get behind the players, make your presence felt, and cheer on the team as we take aim for a 100% record at home in. 6 Sun 15 February, THROW IN 2:00PM Cé thusa agus cárb as thú Who are you and where are you from? These are the most basic questions of all in the GAA so let s take a look at the wonderful place that binds us all together, Tyrone. Who we are People have been here for over 5,000 years and there are now 182,000 of us, including 10,000 recently-arrived, mostly from Poland, Lithuania, Portugal, Slovakia and Latvia Before the Great Famine (in 1841) 313,000 people lived here but our population then plummeted to 127,600 in 1937 Our main towns are Omagh (25,000), Strabane (15,000), Dungannon (13,000) and Cookstown (12,000) but two-thirds of us remain rural Public services, retailing, manufacturing, construction and farming provide most of Tyrone s jobs: our materials-handling engineering businesses lead the world What we are Tyrone covers 3,155 sq km/1,220 sq miles with 75% of it at least 350ft/110m above sea level 10,000 years ago Tyrone was covered in ice which left behind our plentiful sand and gravel: our bogs began to grow 4,000 years ago Lough Neagh is Ireland s largest lake, 19 miles by 10 miles and up to 100 feet deep. Our main rivers are the Ballinderry, Blackwater, Derg, Owenkillew, Mourne and Strule. Old Tyrone For several hundred years each successive O Neill was created Chieftain of Ulster in a unique ceremony at Tullyhogue The Plantation of Ulster doubled Tyrone s population to 40,000: Scots settlers came to east, mid and north Tyrone, English settlers to south and west Tyrone and Servitors (Royal officials) to south-east Tyrone Before the Famine of the 1840s, 60% of our people spoke Irish: 20 years later only 5% spoke Irish Tyrone s first railway (Derry/Strabane) opened in 1847: our last one (Strabane/ Omagh/Dungannon) closed in At their peak, they connected 30 of our towns and villages. GAA Tyrone Our first County Board was set up in 1903 but we had to wait until 1956 for our first Ulster Senior Football title We have 48 GAA Clubs playing football only and 5 playing hurling only, fielding 550 different teams involving 12,000 players: 40 Clubs play Ladies football and 9 play Camogie It s now our Tyrone tradition to hold a Meet the Players event immediately after our last home Allianz National League match. pose for your selfies with whoever and, of course, touch base with your favourite players. This year it s planned for Sunday 26 March when we ll welcome probably Ireland s most consistent team of the past 20 years, Mayo, to Healy Park. You can get your autographs, DON T MISS IT! It s become a big day for our players. It s become a big day for Tyrone GAA. Make sure it s a big day for you and your family too. All you need to do is be there! The winning ticket will be drawn & announced at half time.
