6 Report from VP Sports & Health Building your Community Agenda Item 039/1415 Student Participation - working on developing the #TeamUWE sporting community, and have been creating a better communication pathway between both student union and Centre for Sport to promote & market university sport. Positive results with existing club membership figure at 3074 This is the highest figure ever recorded for UWESU Sports club membership, and a first to ever break the 3000 barrier. We saw the Cycling club ratified at Octobers Sports Council, we have since also ratified an Archery club to set up, and I ve been working closely with the students involved to support them in finding their feet! Varsity - A big part of my agenda this year has been to increase the visibility of the Varsity Series. We ve been holding monthly Varsity Executive meetings with Bristol University, and additional standalone event executive meetings for Boat & Rugby. We are currently in the calm before the storm period. The first event of the series was American Football, which was a phenomenal success, making a huge profit of 1, for the series and the charity. Following this, was the Inaugural Varsity 10K race, where we saw 404 students staff and members of the Bristol community running for their respective institutions. We also gave 40 volunteers the opportunity to get involved with event marshalling on the day. We have also introduced three new sports into the series this year [Pool & Snooker, Dance & Golf]. The current score for the series to date is Bristol 1- UWE 3, with UWE taking the win for American Football, Pole Fitness and Golf. I m in the process of finalising details for the rest of the events almost all in the same week [Boat Race, Windsurf & Sailing, Rugby, and Varsity Day.] The increase in resource I have put into the marketing of the series seems to be paying off, and we have raised the profile within the community hugely, promotional trailers, posters and teams flyering local houses has supported this. Representing your voice Sports Committee - I mentioned my work on restructuring the sports committee in my last report. The feedback from both of the committees held so far, has been fantastic and making a much stronger impact to our sports committees. The last Sports committee [Jan 2015] we delivered a breakout workshop about sustainability in Sport, and have since been working with club committees and the UWESU Green Leader coordinator on increasing UWESU Sports commitment to sustainability, as a direct result of this, clubs are now making pledges to say no to plastic and make a commitment to ban plastic water bottle use at club training sessions & matches. It s the time of year we have a new, fresh faced set of committees and we start to see many students graduate, the next meeting [19 th March 2015] will be formatted around the benefits of engaging with sports at University, and how students can utilize these skills in their chosen careers. Page 6 of 16

7 Campus Connect - The Campus Connect survey was delivered to all students on both Glenside and Bower Ashton campuses. The data ascertained from this survey has now be fully collated and analysed. Hannah khan and I have since delivered the results to the UWESU senior management team along with key members of campus staff, and discussed the emerging patterns and potential solutions that can be made, both quick wins and longer term goals. Myself & Hannah are now in the process of finalizing the action plan, and circulating this to the relevant staff to implement the changes required. Cycling Facilities - I have been working with James Morvan [UWE s Travel Engagement Officer] about improving the facilities we offer for those that cycle to campus, as a continued commitment to promoting active travel and a healthy lifestyle. We have done a lot of promotion of the new cycle hub, and different cycling events across the city. I m concerned that bike thefts have increased across campus, and subsequently am working with UWE security to increase patrols. I m currently talking to the retail manager to see if we can reduce the cost of D-locks & potentially put on a promotion to encourage students to purchase appropriate locks. We have also secured some funding from the security & active travel teams and have purchased some bike security marking kits, these have been distributed and volunteers will be helping cyclists mark their bikes to prevent thefts. Giving you Opportunities Women in Sport - Supported multiple sports clubs in organising and delivering a variety of women specific training sessions, although this is often a struggle as we are lacking support financially to fund additional facilities. I ve held a number of women in sport focus groups, in a bid to understand further why our numbers of females engaged in sport at UWE are considerably lower than males [37.5% females]. The feedback captured from these sessions has been enormously helpful in creating a project initiation plan to deliver a programme geared towards semi-sporty or inactive females. I ve approached Wesport to support me in compiling an application for a sportive funding to deliver this 6 week programme of female led exercise classes, under the This Girl Can banner. Working in conjunction with Hannah Khan, [VP Socs & Comms] I supported a number of events during the week leading up to the event, including a guest speaker to attend for a Canoe event An evening with Deb Pinniger [International Freestyle Kayak Champion, and a Women s Snowsports night where we saw 25 women taken to the Gloucester Dry Slope and have a night of skiing & snowboarding. We provided beginner lessons in conjunction with Off The Wall programme, and the Snowsports club provided both race & freestyle training. Sports Awards - Traditionally, this annual event is hugely successful and this year I am working to develop the event to truly reflect the outstanding achievements of our students and celebrate UWE s sporting success throughout the academic year. I m working hard to ensure this event goes off with a bang, and have included additional entertainment to the evening. Nominations for both Team and Individual Awards have gone live and are set to close on March 20 th Tickets are selling like hotcakes, and with 440 seats available, we have just a third of tickets left to sale with over 2 months to go until the event. Page 7 of 16

8 Committee Training - This year I have been working on a new structure for sports clubs committee training. The need for increased resources to be put into the training we provide is clearly apparent, with a huge inconsistency with regards to the level committees are running and delivering club organisation. I have put together a 2 day residential training event plan, to include both operational content based workshops, along with a number of leadership sessions. I have arranged for a guest speaker from Fieri leadership development. The vision is to provide more informative sessions to result in more efficiently run clubs, and provide personal development opportunities for these to students to gain transferable skills, and increase employability. Feel Good February - In a collaboration with Centre for Sport & our Off The Wall coordinator I have delivered two festival type participation events, The UWE Glow Games. This event was aimed towards disengaged students in a bid to get them active and healthy whilst in a non-judgemental, creative and fun environment, with no commitment required. Based on feedback from the trial event in December, Glow in the Dark dodgeball was included into the March event. Both events were a fantastic success, with nothing but positive feedback from students, and over 150 students attending in total. I m now in discussions with the Centre for Sport about the viability of securing funding to purchase the equipment required for this event, to reduce financial implications, and increase feasibility to run this event on a regular basis.
