Though, perhaps, better to falter now than in three, or four weeks time.,1 Section continues to defv decision - ;u ci rher end of the ladder. St. Bernard's ai ter a good win over Caulfield are now ;i. th - a game out of the Four. Old Scotch are back in fourth spot on percentuge over Ivanhoe, whose loss last ~+ eek could prove expensive. Marcellin's c[efcat by Scotch sees them, together with Caulfield, entrenched in the relegation zone - but still only a game behind Ormond (eighth) who lost to Uni. Blacks nurrowly. The Black's have moved up into seventh. University Blues' defeat of De La Salle and North's win over Ivanhoe enabled the Old Boys to slip into second place. The Blues look safe on top. Equally is the pressure still "on" in B Section. Old Haileybury failed against Fawkner (a bye to come) and are now only two points clear of Monash Blues (v ho just scraped home against Coburg) and a game clear of Fawkner. Collegians' sound defeat by Old Paradians (a bye yet) saw them drop from fifth to seventh - siac points out of the Four. Parkside maintained their hold on the double chance with a resounding win over Old 1Vlelburnians~ Parkside must keep winning as they are only two points clear of Old Paradians. Three teams, Old Brighton, Alphington and Hampton Rovers still have marginal chances of unseating Old Xaverians in C Section, though they are two games behind at this stage. Alphington lost a chance to stay in touch last week when tefeated by Old Brighton, as did Hampton Rovers who suffered badly at the hands of Kew. Geelong continue to press St. Kilda for second place - each must keep winning as only percentage separates them. A.J.A.X. seem safe in the number one spot - as do Old Carey at the other end of the scale. In D Section, the top five all won last week by good margins. State Bank, a game outside the Four, today meet Old Camberwell (second on percentage ahead of St. Kevin's and M.H.S.O.B. and a game behind Power House). This game, may well decide the fate of each for A loss by either could prove disastrous. La Trobe Blacks' win over A.M.P. last week enabled them to draw level with Beverley Hills (third) and Old Geelong (fourth) in E Section. Last week's results also saw St. Bede's and Bulleen-Templestowe establish themselves firmly as the "sides-to-beat". A.N.Z. Bank's win over Brunswick gives them a two game break from relegation. Wins to the top four in F Section - Thornbury, Bulleen United, Commonwealth Bank and Therry - last week, settled the issue here. Fifth-placed Footscray are ten points behind and with only three games to go it is hard to see them making it. Both Junior Section's were marred by "forfeits" last week - St. Bernard's to Monash University in Junior One and Caulfield to Coburg in Junior Two. Ormond "did the impossible" and beat North Old Boys - in Junior One - and still went out of the Four (on percentage) because Ivanhoe defeated Uni. Blacks. Old Scotch beat the Blues and now any one of these four (Blues, Scotch, Ivanhoe, Ormond) could finish second - or fifth behind North. Monash (in sixth place) still have an outside chance of making it. They are only a game behind. In Junior Section Two, the only question is "who will finish where?"' After, defeat last week, Kew (fourth) are now two games behind Coburg, on top. De La Salle are currently second - but only two point three per cent ahead- of Old Haileyburians in third place. 3 PREVIEWING TODAY' S A SECTION Three rounds to go before..the completion of the season and the composition of the Final Four has not yet been resolved. The only team whose position in the Four is guaranteed is Uni. Blues, who are sitting securely in the top spot. One game separates North Melbourne (second position) and St. Bernard's (sixth). The next three games are certain to b e cut throat with the teams fighting for third and fourth positions all with a chance of making it. Vital games this week will be the cashe s between St. Bernard's O.C. and Old Scotch and De La Salle and Ormond. A most interesting contest will be held between Uni. Blacks and North O.B. The Blacks have really been the team capable of causing surprises during the season and they will' want to ensure there is no possibility of relegation for them. Marcellin meet Uni. Blues at home, knowing they have to win to keep alive their chances of staying in A Grade. Marcellin have shown glimpses of form, like all sides in the competition, during the year but Uni. Blues are in powerful touch at present and should prove too strong. St. Bernard's D.C., as previously mentioned, clash with Old Scotch. Both sides are desperate to secure fourth place for the Finals and have hard hitting coaches in Mitchell and Aghan, who will demand the utmost from their teams. The Saints are making a late run for the Four whilst Old Scotch have been on the slide since great early season form. Despite a poor second half against Caulfield Grammar last week, I'm selecting St. Bernard's. De La Salle face Ormond after a strenuous and hard fought game against the Blues. Ormond have lost games they should have won during the season and fumbled good chances for the Finals. De La Salle still have their eyes on second place and their strong forwards will ensure a win. Uni. Blacks, the engimatic side of the competition, meet North O.B. at home. One would believe it would be impossible for the Blacks to defeat the rapid-rising Northerners, but with Costello, Cordner and company in fine form, anything could happen. North, however, realise -that they can't afford a loss at this stage of the year. Their forwards and rovers have hit form at the right time of the year and should ensure they get the points. Ivanhoe meet Caulfield Grammarians in what is again a most important match. Ivanhoe have struck a hollow patch at the wrong time and will have to pull themselves out, of it if they are to be in the Finals. Caulfield Grammarians showed desperation in the second half of their game against St. Bernard's last week and it may augur for better things in the future. It is up to the 'experienced players at Caulfield to save them from relegation and I'm tipping them to cause an upset in this round. My tips are : Unit. Blues, St. Bernard's, De La Salle, Nort h O.B. and Caulfield Grammarians - MICHAEL ARNOLD. Page 4 B SECTION ' Once again today's results will have a vital bearing on the Final Four. For several teams the remaining games will all be "Grand Finals". Last week saw Parkside and Old Paradians consolidate after two good wins. Fawkner and Monash Blues just scraped in but were able to climb higher up the ladder. Collegians have tumbled two spots and today journey out to Coburg to do battle with the fast improving young Coburg side. The "Burgers" turned it on last week and were unlucky to go down. (Perhaps a few more training attendances would have given you enough mileage to see out the full game.) Collegians are still struggling and today's game will be no easy one for them. Coburg led well in the last quarter last week but died on their run. Collegians lost on their own ground and their confidence must be low. Coburg have hit their straps at the right time and I think they can win this one. Old Trinity, fresh after the bye, take on Monash Blues at Yarra Bend. Monash. got a fright last week and this should shake them out of any complacency that may have set in. Old Trinity will be keen for a win to lift themselves up that ladder. The Blues have their sights set on that vital fourth spot and this should be the impetus they need to win. I'll go for Monash Blues to win. Old, Paradians play host to Old Haileyburians at Bundoora. Boy, this will be a tough one. Old Paradians are sti!l doing everything right and showed Collegians no mercy last week. Old Haileybury put up a great struggle last week before finally losing to Fawkner. They are in the hot spot now and this will bring the best out of them. The fact that this game is at Parade is very important, but so is Halleybury's fierce desire to take part in this year's Finals. I think Mike Porter, John Houghton and the boys can lift and snatch this game away from Paradians in a desperate struggle. Talk about tough games. The next one is a beauty. Fawkner versus Parkside at Fawkner. The home team is another team that must keep winning to have a chance for the Finals. Parkside had a magnificent win over Old Melburnians last week. They justified my belief in their ability to rise to the occasion and PI ay at their best under extreme pressure. The condition of the ground last week was disgraceful but they adjusted to it and ran out good winners. Parkside is desperate to keep second place for the double chance. Fawkner is desperate to keep their finals chances alive, so today's game will be a "ripper". I have stuck with both teams all year and tried to encourage them each week. Now my moment of decision is at hand. I must make a choice. I believe Fawkner is in for a shock today. If Parkside line up at full strength they will win this one. They are loaded with talent and desire to win. It will be a tremendous struggle between two top sides, but I believe Parkside will win. My congrats to Parkside Rese rves on being the first team to defeat O.M.'s Reserves. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER -- AUGUST..5, 1978 Old Melburnians have the bye. I offer my congratulations to their coach, players and entire club on the manner in which they took last week's losses. Best of luck to Rohan Brown. I hope your shoulder heals up in time for the finals. Both you and your club deserve to be in this year's Grand Final. SELECTIONS : Coburg, Monash Blues, Old Halleyburians, Parkside - BRIAN LAUDER. C SECTION I can sense trouble already as I go about my selections for this week - particularly with four games : St. Kilda Old Collegians and Kew ; Hampton Rovers and Old Carey ; Old Xaverians v Aiphington and, of course, A.J.A.X. and Geelong down at Geelong. Two queries may be made of these comments - why the hesitancy with Hampton and Old Carey, as neither can make the Four - and my disregard for the Old Brighton-Old Ivanhoe game. Well! Let's take the latter first - Old Brighton, back in fifth place with a very minor chance of making the Four, will not allow a slip on its home ground against Old Ivanhoe. But, while expecting Brighton to win, I still have a healthy respect for Old Ivanhoe's forward-line, which managed to penetrate St. Kilda's defence for nearly a one hundred point tally last week. Last week, Old Carey nearly surprised Geelong ; they played determinantly, contesting every issue and appeared more suited to the smaller, alternative "two-kicks-down-the-middle" Bulleen ground. At the moment I don't see them as the worst side in the Section, but I am sane enough not to stick my neck out as to which side al l Relegation appears likely for Old Carey, but they will certainly be desperate to end their disappointing year on a high note. Hampton Rovers, following its four successive wins, slumped last week. Little lies between many of the teams in this year's C Section. Today, with the Cooke Brothers in fine form and dedicated, near-veteran "Reg" Elliott determined to salvage something from the wreck, I have the feeling Old Carey will notch its third win. Last week, Old Xaverians began poorly at A.J.A.X. but improved as the game progressed. Xavs appear safe in fourth spot - with no movement either way. Today, at home, they will be too strong for an inconsistent Alphington. St. Kilda O.C. face a danger game at home today when they play an apparently revived Kew. Kew has shown that it plays well for part of a game; its win over Hampton Rovers was a four quarters effort and the team's best for the year. But I don't expect they will repeat that near 150 point performance today. St. Kilda will win - but I expect the scores to be reasonably close. Now for the big one! The last time I selected A.J.A.X. to lose was on May 27 - that was the last time they met Geelong. It was also the last time Geelong lost! Today, A.J.A.X. play at Geelong for the first time. Neither side can go out of the Four (Geelong's percentage is worth an extra game) but Geelong must keep winning to have any hope of gaining the double chance. Both sides boast plenty of talent - an enormous amount for two C Section sides. (The same can be said of St. Kilda and Old Xaverians.) A.J.A.X. has Michael and` Hen ry Ritterman and top forwards in Feldpicer, Komesarook, Lemish and countless balancing talent. Geelong has State centreman, [an Davis and a galaxy of players like Bullen, Birreil, Coad, Nielsen, the Trevaskis Brothers and Poulke - to name a few to have played consistently every Saturday. Others have backed them up equally. A.J.A.X. has, on paper, shown itself to have the best attack; Geelong, similarly, the best defence. A.JA.X. has shown its strength at home, but a side that has lost only two games has hardly failed when away! It is difficult to select a winner - Geelong has improved considerably since May 27. I think they will win at Queen's Park even if I am, perhaps understandably, biased. But it has promise of being a great contest. SELECTIONS : Old Brighton, Old Carey, Old Xaverians, St. Kilda C.B.C.O.C., Geelong - JIM FIDGE. D SECTION Last week the predicted results became fact and the competition for the first time has divided into final contenders and the five sides who must now look towards more success in Heatherton disappoined last week at home. Today they visit Royal Park for the first of two consecutive away games. University High School Old Boys, their hosts, will offer no niceties during the game as they can still avoid the dreaded drop to 'E'. Despite Heatherton's inconsistent play I believe they will be too talented for the Old Boys of University High School. Elsternwick await Melbourne High School Old Boys, who have gone from strength to strength during July. The visitors, with Adams and Martin converting opportunities generated around the ground by Pestling and Flegeltaub, have the ability and incentive to defeat Eisternwick, who have disappointed after a promising start to the season. The big game of the round sees the Old Camberwell Grammarians go west (geographically at least) to engage the State Bankers on their Oval 4 lair. The Bankers have maintained credit in the Finals' account and their consistency could well be rewarded with a win today. Old Camberwell was down on form during early July. Their players have bounced back with wins over lower sides on the last two Saturdays. The Bankers can always be relied upon at home. Visitors often have difficulty adjusting to Albert Park conditions. Home ground advantage plus greater recent consistency prompt me to select The Bankers to take the points. Country Colleges, whose recent form has been disappointing, are at home to St. Kevin's. On May 27, St. Kevin's did not play the game out and their country cousins stormed hom e Page 5

4 to capture the game. Home ground advantage has helped the Colleges in the past. However, today St. Kevin's greater depth of talent, their overall strength and their greater incentive should enable their players to defeat the Country Colleges. Leaders, Power House, will find their game restricted on the narrow confines of the Ransford Oval when they meet West Brunswick. The Power House strength, as exemplified by big men Perry, Bredyk and Sykes, should be able to take over in the air and direct play. Smaller players such as Stafford and Evans will receive enough opportunity to keep their side in front. What can one say about West Brunswick? Their ascent from F Section has halted. After a promising start their form has deteriorated. Next season's success must now be paramount to the West Brunswick brainstrust. SELECTIONS : Heatherton, State Bank, Melbourne High School Old Boys, St. Kevin's, Power House - NORM NUGENT. E SECTIO N A reasonable start with only Brunswick letting me down. This week they're at home to St. Bede's and, frankly, the only way I can see them winning this one is for a sufficient number of the visitors to run out of petrol, on the long trip to the ground. Congratulations, A.N.Z. Bank, on your first win for a long time, but I'm afraid you'll be back to earth today. No rt h Brunswick demolished Old Mentone and have rolled everything before them in recent weeks. In my opinion they are as good as either of the top teams in the Grade, and although they can't make the Four, they'll win this one easily. There won't be a great deal of interest in the outcome of the A.M.P. v Old Mentone game, because neither side can finish the season in the Four, or in the relegation zone. Both teams lost badly last week, and this game will be a toss-up. The twenty that can work up the greater enthusiasm will take the points, and I'll go for Mentone. I copped more rubbish than a council tip for picking against Old Geelong last week, but I was right. With two quarters of concentration only, O.G.s gave Bulleen a big fright, after trailing by 45 points at half time. Today, however, the size of the come-back is irrelevant. It's a completely new ball game, with Geelong travelling out to Beverley Hills. This is a crucial match for both sides, and the loser will be struggling to make the Finals. I believe that Geelong can win it - if they start making more of opportunities up forward, and cut out silly errors that nullify otherwise good football. The other game that could have an important bearing on the Four sees Bulleen-Templestowe at home to La Trobe. Earlier in the season, La Trobe beat Bulleen, a fact that the latter certainly won't have forgotten. On the other hand, La Trobe are playing well, and have more incentive than Bulleen (who can't miss second spot), while Bulleen's second half last week was very ordinary. Their coach referred to them as "pretenders" at three quarter time last week, and will doubtless have made similar statements at training this week. The outcome of today's game could well depen d Page 6 on how much success his needling has had. With no great confidence, I'm picking the home side to win narrowly. My selections : St. Bede's, No rth Brunswick, Old Mentone, Old Geelong, Buileen-Temptestowe - PETER LEMON. F SECTIO N Monash Whites, at home to National Bank, should enable the students to hold firmly to bottom position. On the whole, it is not proving to be a good year for the Monash football scene. The Bankers cannot make the Finals, so their interest should be in building for next season. Fillies, at home to Uni. Reds. The home team are big enough to pull boats up the river and were well in the game at Cain Park until half way through the last quarter when the Thornbury small and medium sized blokes ran riot, especially the half back line and wingers. I imagine that Footscray, at home, will be good enough for this one. Therry C.C. should be untroubled to beat Clayton, and as they can't get above their present position nor lose their place in the Four, they are situated ideally to practise a bit of system in readiness for the first semi-final. Commonwealth Bank will have a visit from Bulleen United, and the afternoon should provide an entertaining spectacle. Bulleen can play fast flowing football and could reach top spot, but the Bankers also have been playing well after a bad start to the season. It is unlikely that the Bankers can, improve their position on the ladder and as their finals berth is quite safe, then the advantage to accrue from this match is the knowledge that what took. place today can be repeated in a month's time. I fancy Bulleen, especially if they can direct their attack down the centre, and if they read these notes before the game, please be sure that the Harry Trott is a big circle, as wide as it is long. Berries the Bye. SELECTIONS : National Bank, Footscray I.T., Therry C.C., Bulleen United - SYD WHIT- FIELD. JUNIOR I SECTIO N Today's big clash sees University Blues at home to North Old Boys. The Blues must win to stay in the race, but North, after last week's loss, will be keen to re-establish their mastery. North should prove too strong for the Blues. Old Scotch (third) travel to St. Bernard's, who will be keen to erase the effects of last week's forfeit. However, Scotch have too much to gain from a win to let the opportunity pass by. Ormond won convincingly last week and still dropped out of the Four. They will be more determined than ever to notch another win today when they are at home to seventh placed Hampton Rovers. University Blacks have the chance to move away from relegation when they play Geelong. This should prove sufficient incentive for them to record their third win for the season. Monash will be lacking in hard match-play after last week and this should give Ivanhoe the edge, especially at home. Monash need t o win to stay in touch with the leaders, whilst Ivanhoe want to retain their place in the Four. Selections for this week : No rth Old Boys, Old Scotch Colt., Ormond, University Blacks, Ivanhoe - PETER BRUKNER. JUNIOR 2 SECTIO N With the end of the season fast approaching, the fight for the Final Four seems to be limited to five teams - Coburg, De La Salle O.C., Old Haileyburians, Kew and Old Paradians. Competition is certain to be close and determined over the remaining few weeks for the top spots and the double chance. Old Haileyburians meet Therry, who. have had difficulty in producing strong opposition lately. Old Haileyburians should prove too strong at home as they will be desperate to secure the opportunity for the double chance. Caulfield Grammarians clash with West Brunswick in what should be an interesting clash. Caulfield, because of their better forwards and rovers, will prove too strong for West Brunswick. Although the "Wicks" will be keen to improve their record. De La Salle O.C., presently in third position, will be anxious to keep up their winning form. Fawkner lack the consistency to match De La Salle in most departments and will find them too, strong today. Kew are at home to Old Paradlans. The visitors must win to keep their very slim finals hopes alive. Old Paradians have not been strong enough to defeat the top teams so far this season and will prove no match for Kew. Top team, Coburg, face Melbourne High School Old Boys in what will be a one-sided affair. Coburg are in top form at present whilst M.H.S. have been somewhat disappointing. My selections are : Old Halleyburlans, Caulfield Grammarians, De La Salle O.C., Kew, and Coburg - PETER NATHAN. St. Bede's O.C. congratulate John (Nippy) Turner on playing his 50th game for the club against Bulleen-Templestowe. "Nippy", who played in our 1970 premiership team, left us for a number of years to return last season (another premiership). Highlights of "Nippy's" many fine games have been his determination, will to win and "never-say-die" attitude. A fitness fanatic, we hope John's old legs will carry him through many more fine games for the "Bedas". Bulleen United wish to congratulate Jeff Lachmund on reaching his 50th game today. Since joining the club in 1975, Lacka" has been' a prominent figure up forward, heading the club's goal-kicking list each year. In 1976, he was also club coach, when he took the team to 5th position, just missing the Finals. After an injury-prone start to this season, Jeff is now in fine form, and is once again displaying his "wormish" abilities. ST. 5 BALL BRIE FS' RUCKMAN'S CENTURY The old war horse, Bill Lagerberg, notched up his 100th game against Beverley all at Hills, and St. Bede's O.C. congratulate him on a mighty effort. A great clubman and an inspiring player on the fieid, Bill has carried the ruck against much bigger opponents over the years. Bill was justly rewarded for his efforts this season by being appointed captain of the 2nd XVIII. The Best and Fairest winner last season, Bill is tipped to figure prominently in that award again this year. If only he could kick!! U.H.S.O.B.'s 100TH U.H.S. defender, George Zielinski, plays his 100th game with the club this week. If ever a player is to be congratulated it is George, who has played many games under the difficulty of recurring leg injuries. Most of George's games have been with the Seniors. "Zieler", who was married only recently, has been with the club since the successful Under 17 days ( ). Well done, George, and we look forward to many more fine games from you. Caulfield Grammarians pay tribute to Sisson, who Michael passed the 50 games mark recently. Michael is only in his third season with the club, was elected as captain of the Juniors in 1977 but played for most of the season in the Seniors team and this year he was elected deputy vice captain of that team. He is a determined player with a good pair of hands anh being a utility type, can be played in most positions. Popular with his team mates and the administration for his unassuming manner, we all look forward to having his services for many years to come. Congratulations to De La Salle Old legians' Coi- player, Chris Brown, who played his 50th game last week. Chris has been in great form this season and his speed is a great asset as he moves out moves of the centre and starts many forward. He is quite a handful for opposition clubs and if he continues to play as he has lately, there could be another premiership flag flying this year. Rocco Serena of De La Salle Old Collegians stepped out last week in his 50th game for the club. Rocco is a fine clubman who has served on the committee and also, this year, he has been team manager for the Under 15's, who are enjoying a good season. He may soon move off the interchange bench and become a regular senior player. All at Old Camberwell Grammarians congratulate Peter Steven on playing his 50th game for the club against West Brunswick recently. The youngest of the talented Steven trio, Peter is a plucky rover/wingman who has put on some fine displays in the Firsts and Seconds. Before Pulling on a Two Blues guernsey, Peter assisted the club as a boundary umpire for the Firsts. Congratulations Peter, we hope you play many more fine games for the 'Wells. Congratulations go to Bill Trahar on playing his 50th game for Old Camberwell Grammarians today. "Barnacle Bill"' a fine 'utility player, has been playing with the "Wells" since 1974 and he has played many great games in which his adaptability has shown through, either as a mobile forward or a close checking backman. Well done, Bill, and we all hope to see you playing your 100th for the 'Wells. Today, Dick Watkin plays his 50th game for Old Camberwell Grammarians, and everyone connected with the club congratulates him on reaching this milestone. A classy wingman with incredible ball control and plenty of dash, "Watto" has Played many excellent games for the Firsts. There is no finer sight on a football field than to see Dick cutting an opposition's defence with his speedy runs from the wing, and then goal with a penetrating left foot kick, or short pass with accuracy to a forward. Weif done, Dick, all the best for the future and the next 50. Everybody at Commonwealth late Bank Ken (Turk) congratu- Mehmet, who plays his 50th game this week. Since joining the club in 1975 Ken has been a true clubman. His dedication to the club could not be bettered. Besides being one of the fittest Players in the club, attending training with barely a miss, he also supports all social functions. Because of the abovementioned attributes, Ken is a committee man taking his position seriously done, Turk, and may we see many more games. Well from you in future. BALL BRIEFS COUNTRY COLLEGES' IDENTITY'S 200 John Shaw plays his 200th game wit h Country Colleges (formerly Assumption O.C.) today. John first played in 1967 and, since that time, has become one of the identities of the club. He played in Assumption's only premiership side (E Section ) and was a regular First XVIII player until the last couple of years. Since then he has played with the Reserves, in either of the key forward or defence positions. John was President of the club from 1974 to 1977 and with great support from his wife, Lorraine, proves to be an untiring and loyal worker. His efforts culminated in his being awarded a Life Membership at the end of the '77 season. John has missed few games over the years, which is due either to his fitness or his durability, and the club congratulate him on reaching the 200 game milestone. All associated with the club hope to see the familiar frame filling the No. 11 jumper out on the ground for many more games. La Trobe Blacks captain, Simon Hast, played his 50th game for the club against A.M.P. Society last week. Simon's dynamic display at centre half forward, which included four valuable goals, was a highlight of the game. Simon first played for La Trobe in 1976, being a member of the premiership team in his first season with the club. Last year he was appointed captain of the team, and his dedication and leadership both on and off the field has been an inspiration to his team-mates. Well done, Simon, from all players and supporters at La Trobe, and we hope to see you leading the team in the Finals. LA TROBE TRAINER'S COMEBACK Was it a nightmare? Or merely the effects of a hangover? Or was it the harsh world of reality? Many 'Trobers' were pondering these questions after rumours of a recent comeback by La Trobe's trainer extraordinaire, "Milan" the magnificent, who further stunned the crowd when he snaffled a six-pointer with a salacious snap. Milan, who has been known to make blind men walk and lame men see, does a great job for the club as trainer (with the aid of the infamous magic towel) every week. Well done, Milan, and keep the miracles coming! The Parkside Sports Club was formed only 2 years and what a successful week the Sports Club had this week. The Parkside Basketball Club won 4 Grand Finals with 2 more pending. The Parkside Football Club Seniors and Reserves both thrashed Old Melburnians - whose Reserves were previously undefeated. The Cricket Club recently reappointed Richie Robinson as coach, after he led us to a premiership last year. After all that, no wonder the brains trust of the Parkside Sports Club were all smiling. Congratulations, to everyone concerned. CLUB 18 REPRESENTATIVE MATCH The Club 18 Association, which is made up of 12 teams from various Amateur clubs, is holding a Representative Game against the Officers' Cadet School at Portsea. Each team in the Association has been asked to supply a couple of players, and we are hopeful of having a great day. Members and supporters are invited to come along and show their support, because the Club 18 is on the way up and can only get stronger. 150 TO RESERVES' CAPTAIN Caulfield Grammarians congratulate Geof Hartley who has now played 150 games for the club. In his 11 seasons as a player Geoff, like most of our players, commenced his football career as a member of the Juniors and when he outgrew them, moved on to the Reserves team which he has captained for the past 2 years. "Keg", as he is affectionately known to his clubmates, is a determined player who, when he gathers steam, charging out from the backline, often causes opposing forwards to respectfully stand aside. When placed on the forward line to impart a little bite in that area he sometimes surprises friend and foe alike by notching a goal. His capacity to accept responsibility cheerfully is appreciated by the club administration and when he finally hangs up his boots we expect him to direct some of his well-known energy in that direction. 8 LOOKING BACK FIVE YEARS AGO Congratulations to Richard Elliott, wh o played his 150th game for Old Carey. Best and Fairest on three occasions and runner-up many other times, Richard had captained the club for four years. (Double advertising rate on page 1 this week, Richard. NR.) M.H.S.O.B. were proud of four stalwarts, 150 games to Richard Harley and John Cooper, both Victorian representatives, and 100 games to Wood and Bob Staley. Ross In a high scoring game, Kew (5th) In B Section, kicked (160) to defeat Old Trinity (6th) 19.5 (119). Best were Johnston, Mitcheit, Hayes (Kew) and Watsford, Barley, R. Peers (O.T.). Top goalkicker for the day was Mick Mahoney, who kicked 9 of St. Bernard's against Monash Blues. Alphington held on to top spot in D Section with a 93 point win over 6th team, St. Kevin's O.B. Williams, Wayman, Skerry (Aiph.) and Hart, B. Johnson (St. K.) were best. The Umpires' Corner asked "When were the rules first adopted?" The answer was 1874 at a meeting held in Nissen's cafe, Exhibition Street, Melbourne. Alan Duckwort h was vehemently denying that he was in attendance at the meeting, although It was believed that he was the printer of the first rule book, named "The Victorian Rules of Footbalt" and was merely a foldover card of four pages, carried in the shirt pocket of the umpire. TEN YEARS AGO Brunswick paid tribute to Don 'Flash' Simpson, their speedy wingman, who played his 250th game. Don also had served the club as delegate for 6 years. North Old Boys, battling to avoid relegation, put up a great fight against top side Old Paradians and went down by only 4 points. Old Scotch, with their second win for the year, settled Collegians' hope of competing in the Finals when they outclassed their opponents to win by nearly 9 goals. Hay, Whitford and Dave Birch were best for the victors while Chris Roach ( 5 goals), Wood and Powell did most to keep Collegians in the game. Ivanhoe and Geelong drew at Ivanhoe. The home side were a little unlucky as they kicked 1.7 in the final qua rter to the visitors' solita goal. ry TWENTY YEARS AGO In a very tight game, Commonwealth Bank Juniors kicked 5.7 to Alhpington's 4.9 to inflict first defeat upon the "Tons". Best were Phillips, Lake, Taylor ( Bank) and McCormack, Comte, Humphries (Alphington). Winners were celebrating with a dinner at Phair's Hotel and an evening at the Tivoli. (Will older readers please explain the passing of those two insti tutions to the present generation? N.R. ) Old Brighton Grammarians forward, Doug Ridley, posted his 50th goal to become first O.B.G. player to kick 50 in a season. In 'B', Power House (8th) came from 3 goals down at last change to finish over leade r Page 14 Old Paradians, to win by 4 points. Thompson, Pirrie, Marines (P.H.) and Hill, McCarthy Foley, (Old P.) were best. For the battle of the "Geelongs", Old Geelong Grammarians, at home, were too strong for the Country boys and won to 6.8. The win kept O.G.G.'s in fourth position in B Section. John Laird, Tinsley and Bob Joyce (O.G.G.) and Riley, McIntosh, Miller (Gael.) were best. Caulfield Grammarians, with a convincing 19 point victory over second team, Parkside, were now only 2 points outside the Four. Davidson, Dixon, Harrison (C.G.) and Grossling, Barry, Kane (P'side) starred. THIRTY YEARS AGO Ivanhoe's Ron Smith deserved a mention he joined the club in 1933, was still going strong and kicked his 1000th goal for the club. (What other clubs can boast a 1000 goalkicker? - N.R. ) Brunswick and Geelong were secure on top in 'B' and 'C' Sections. Two names later to become well known in Amateur Football, MANSON RUSSELL and GEOFF HIBBINS, made their debuts with Old Scotch and Collegians. Everybody at Commonwealth Bank extend their congratulations to Wayne "Donkey" Davis, who played his 50th game for the club recently. Wayne joined the Bank in 1975 and showed such promise in his first season that we thought we may lose him simply because we thought he was just too good. He has stayed with us and much to our good fortune, is now an important cog in our attempt to get a premiership. Wayne is very versatile and shows his versatility in filling many varied positions - full back, back flank, wing and ruck rover to name the main positions. Well done, Wayne, your past 50 have been very valuable and may your next 50 games be just as much so. A belated congratulations to Chris Coutts, who recently played his 50th game for St. Bede's O.C. Although small in stature, Chris is one of the most courageous players in the club and has overcome a severe knee injury. In 1976 he proved a most valuable player in the St. Bede's premiership. JAN HOWARD - Editor 200 GAMES FOR SENIOR UMPIRE David Hindle umpires his 200th game in th e V.A.F.A. today at Eisternwick Park. In his ten years with the Amateurs he has had 175 field, 22 boundary, 1 goal and 2 emergency appointments. The field appointments include 11 finais. and David has officiated on the boundary in 3 interstate games and 5 consecutive 'A' Grade Grand Finals between 1971 and 1975: His umpiring career started while he was still at school. In 1965 he joined the V.F.L. Reserve Grade panel and recalls that his first game was Donnybrook v Penton Hills Seconds for which he was paid 3/9/6 (including travelling). David decided to join the V.A.F.A. in 1969 "a move for the best". His first game was Old Paradians v Caulfield Grammarians Reserves but by the end of that season he had progressed rapidly through the ranks and umpired his first 'A' Grade senior game between Blacks and Blues on 14 August, David has been Treasurer of the Umpires' Association for the past two years. He is an accountant in a merchant bank and is married with two girls. There are no plans for the addition of a future umpire. Asked for any advice he had for young umpires he said, "Set yourself goals, aim high, the 'A' Grade Grand Final should be one of your ultimate goals. Train regularly and hard because being physically fit will help you to be mentally alert. Learn the rules, have confidence in your own ability, give 100% concentration to your game, and use common sense. Umpiring will almost certainly cause you some disappointments, that is pa rt of umpiring. Never give up, fight back, persevere and be patient; and when you get oppo rt unities, make the most of them". Wise words from a good umpire. Congratulations on your 200 games.
