Mayflower Junior Archers Junior News Issue No. 27 Inside this issue: October 2013 From the Editor Mayflower Results 2 Welcome to the new members who ve joined Mayflower Archers over the summer months. The coaches who trained you and members of the Junior Group are always willing to help you in your development and we ll do our best to make ourselves known to you so long as we see you at club. As the end of another outdoor season closes, I look back to some of the personal achievements and successes. We ve had our share of podium positions, personal best s and Records breakers. Some have also gained places in the Performance Academy, but more importantly, members thoroughly enjoying themselves and taking part in tournaments. Outdoor season may be over, but there is still plenty going on around and beyond the club. Club nights are on Friday evenings at Mayflower School with plenty of tournaments. Mayflower Results & News page National County Team champs report Forthcoming Special Events July Nationals results, November Challenge Winter Leagues 7 Tournament Diary Please note, due to a private function, the field is closed for shooting on Saturday 5th October. The field will reopen after the event. Award Schemes Bring and Buy Sale Club Diary National Awards 9 Back page Some of you may already be aware that I am taking a step back from the junior section. This means I won t be around quite as much. Lesley will be taking over the postal tournaments and Mark Robinson will be acting as Team Manager for some of the shoots. Then there are plenty of coaches to assist in your development. All you need to do is ask them. There could still be a newsletter, but I will need contributions from you all. If you don t tell anyone what you ve been up to, no one can broadcast the good news. Coming up, some outdoor events. 19th October, a 3D fun shoot at foam rubber replicas of animals. Ask Steve Fenton or me for details, but this time round has proved very popular and we are already close to a full entry. 2nd November, Halloween fun shoot with Barbeque. Should be good, it was last year. 21st December, Christmas fun shoot with seasonal targets, fancy dress and mini competitions. Details of all these and more can be found in the next few pages. Good shooting, Roger
Tournament results for Mayflower Junior Nationals Outdoor Championships, Lilleshall, 6/7 July A low Mayflower entry, but I understand it was still a good weekend. Day 1, Metric round; Sophie 3 rd, James, after a win one, lose one battle with his GB Team mate Matt Ingram made 2 nd place, Alex 10 th, Hannah 10 th and Grace 8 th. Grace was part of the 2 nd placed Regional team. Day 2, Bristol round; Grace 12 th, Hannah 10 th, Alex 4 th, James 2 nd and Sophie Brown 3 rd. Alex made the regional mixed recurve team, while James and Sophie were in the 2 nd placed County compound team and James in the 3 rd placed Southern Counties regional team. Waiting report and photos. Did Maurice the Mascot eventually turn up to support you all? Southern Counties Junior FITA Star, Colchester, 13 th July On a hot windless day, four of our young members ventured all the way to Colchester for this event. 1 st place for Alex in Metric II, 2 nd for Hannah, Metric III, 2 nd for Grace and 4 th for Emily in Metric IV. Well done to all of them. Essex County, World Record Status FITA, 21 st July Quite a crop of medals for Mayflower both in the junior and senior classes, but where were the rest of you? You are aware that there is a county award for the highest placed person entering all the County Championship rounds. Alex Body won the Metric II Jun Gent recurve and a 3 rd for Hannah Godden in Metric III, a 2 nd place for Grace Butterfield and 4 th for Emily Owens in Metric IV and a 3 rd for Sophie Brown shooting Ladies FITA as a Cadet. A remarkable result for the seniors, taking medals in most classes Ladies and Gent FITA and Short Metric. Gents 1 st Nigel Norris, Barebow, 1 st Alex Purser, compound, 1 st Mike Judd and 2 nd Ian Harris, recurve. Ladies 1 st for Helen Harris, compound. Then we mustn t forget Graham Owens 2 nd place in the Short Metric. Excellent shooting by everybody! British Target Championships, Lilleshall, 11/12 Aug A double FITA 2 day event intended for seniors, but juniors can compete against the best so long as they can shoot the adult rounds. Mike Judd 4 th, Matt Webb 19 th, Alex Purser 12 th and Sophie Brown 24 th. Alex was also part of the winning England team. Essex County Metric Clout, Woodford Archers, 25 th August To enter a Clout competition, an archer must have had Clout training due to the long distances and the high aiming angles required. Not many clubs have the facility to do this so the opportunities are very limited. As a result, entries are usually low for an otherwise interesting day out. 1 st Ryan Bishop Gent u14 Longbow also Lady Paramount award 1 st Ellie Vidgeon-Hart Lady u18 Compound also Lady Paramount award Some of our seniors did well also. Gents Longbow 2 nd Geoff Kent 3 rd Scott King while Sandy Barrett just had a good day out! Gents Barebow 2 nd Martin Vidgeon-Hart Holdens Archers, Hatfield Memorial Shoot, 26 th August Not a lot of support from Mayflower for this charity shoot barring the 3 man compound entry except Alex Body who preferred and won the junior recurve class shooting a full Double American round rather than the Hatfield junior round. Well done, Alex! Page 2
Tournament results for Mayflower Southern Counties Junior Target Champs, Runwell, 31 st August A warm windless day at Runwell, nice and local, saw the venue for this excellent championship event. 1 st James Howell York, 1 st Sophie Brown Hereford, 3 rd Alex Body Bristol II, 5 th Hannah Godden Bristol III and 3 rd place for Grace Butterfield, Bristol IV. 4 th placed Club team comprised Grace, Alex and Hannah while Grace made the 1 st placed county team. There are some excellent reports on the Essex County web pages pertaining to various successes by Mayflower and members from other Essex clubs. These include Mike Judd s result in the National Series final, National call up and a full report from the National County Team Tournament. Moonlight shoot, Bowmen of Malgrave, 28 th September A very popular shoot for juniors and seniors and this year was no different. They call it the Moonlight shoot because that s exactly what they do. The 80 cm faces are set at 30m and they shoot on the dark. The targets are illuminated by individual floodlights, but not much else so you have to nock your arrows knowing which way round they go. Good fun! I don t yet know who entered or have the results, but I understand several Mayflower members won their class. Well done all. If you fancy a try, don t forget that we have our own Halloween fun shoot on 2nd November and yes, we do have some floodlights. The targets are not so difficult, but night time falls as you are shooting. International Update While all these events were going on, James Howell was shooting his heart out for Great Britain at the Junior European Cup tournament in Bucharest, Rumania. OK, Great Britain didn t win, but the experience has resulted in James being selected to represent GB at the Junior World Cup in Wuxi, (pronounced Wu shi), China between 13th and 20th October. James is probably the only junior member of Mayflower to be selected 3 times in one year. We wish him and Daisy Clark from Chelmsford some good shooting. Also a summary of their experiences throughout the season would make interesting reading; Please. Archery GB Performance Centres Open As many of you already know, Alex Body and Grace Butterfield have both been accepted into the Southern performance academy in Gloucester along with other four other Essex juniors, Lauren Bann, Josie Skinner, George Johnson and Jonathan Tate. Between now and next August they face 10 weekends of intensive training with the accent on performance and excellence. Rebecca Griffin has also been selected for the Para academy. We congratulate them all and wish them all good shooting. County Top Ten s The full September county top ten juniors is published on the Essex County website. Mayflower positions listed below. Any inaccuracies or errors, please refer to the County Records officer. Recurve Ladies 6th Grace Butterfield, 8th Hannah Godden, 9th Emily Owens, Gents 1st Alex Body Compound Ladies 1st Sophie Brown (GB squad), Gents 2nd James Howell (GB squad) Page 3
National County Team Championships, Lilleshall, 29/30 June Some good results for Essex & Suffolk teams. Archers of any age can join in just so long as County select them. On this basis, not many juniors get selected unless a junior team is entered. The event is based on a team-ranking round followed by team head to head elimination rounds. The ranking rounds were 720 rounds at 50m for compound bows and 70m for recurve and longbow on Saturday followed by a FITA round on Sunday. Final positions are determined by points gained (or not gained in the ranking, H2H and FITA round. 1 st place wins you one point, 2 nd two points etc. The ranking rounds saw our Ladies Compound 3 rd, Gents compound 3 rd, Ladies recurve 12 th, Gents recurve 5 th, Gents Longbow 2 nd. Ranking rounds are just the beginning of the tournament. If you ve been placed low, now you get the chance to beat the top teams in head to head rounds. Essex (and Suffolk) gents recurve, ranked 3 rd beat Dorset & Wilts, then Hampshire to lose against Lancashire putting the in the bronze medal match against Norfolk to win 3 rd. Ladies recurve were ranked 12 th and lost their first match against Eastern Area to gain 9 points. Gents Compound team ranked 3 rd won their matches against Staffordshire, Worcestershire and Berkshire to win against Warwickshire in the gold final. Ladies Compound ranked 3 rd had a bye, but then won against Yorkshire and Oxfordshire to come 2 nd against Eastern Area in the gold final. Gents Longbow had a couple of bye s to lose against Devon and Cornwall, but won the bronze match against Durham and Northumberland, 3 rd place. In the FITA rounds Ladies recurve rose to 5 th place, Ladies Compound came 4 th, Gents recurve won their class, as did Gents compound while the longbow men came 2 nd. Overall results for Essex and Suffolk were: 10 th 26 points Ladies recurve Nicki Hunt, Susi Atkinson and Sophie Cole 3 rd 9 points Ladies Compound Daisy Clark, Anna King and Sophie Brown 2 nd 9 points Gents recurve Mike Judd, Matt Webb and Ian Harris 1 st 5 points Gents compound Phil Glover, Alex Purser and James King 2 nd 7 points Gents longbow Mike Wollaston, William Scoltock-Page and Max Room All in all, a very successful weekend and well earned results for Essex and Suffolk. Instant Quiz: How many faces do you know from the Essex & Suffolk team photograph to the left? You don t have to have been a member very long to spot quite a few as some are from Mayflower. Left, Mick Pearce, judge. Front row, Ian Harris, Mike Judd, Alex Purser. Behind them, Matt Webb and Phil Glover with Sophie Brown on the right. Those in the know, should also recognise Daisy Clark, Sophie Cole, Nicki Hunt, James and Anna King, Paul Clark and probably quite a few more Page 4

Winter Leagues Andy Harris League Open to recurve archers of all ages. Turn up on Friday evenings and shoot some arrows. The round is 3 dozen arrows on a 40 cm face at 15 yards. How easy is that? Mike Judd will collect all the scores and send them to the league secretary. Bray and Portsmouth Leagues Shoot a Bray or Portsmouth round (or both) as many times as you like each month and pass your scores to Mike who will enter your best score. Leagues for compound and recurve; open to all archers of all ages, but different leagues for recurve and compound. Perris Archery Junior Indoor League Open to all junior recurve and compound archers. All you need to do is shoot 30 arrows into a 60 cm face at 20 yards. Again Mike will be collecting scores throughout each month. Frostbite League An outdoor postal competition shooting 36 arrows into an 80 cm face at 30 metres. Now how hard can that be? Open to junior recurve archers and senior compound and recurve archers. Lesley will collect the scores and enter the best three in each discipline. So come along for a bit of fun and support your club. Dates for Frostbite shoots are in the club diary (back page). Good shooting, but have fun. And now for something completely different - Winter Field Archery League Organised by GNAS members for GNAS members like us and is good fun for a Sunday morning. To join in, pre book your place at various venues around the South East, including Panther Bowhunters with you equipment, shoot a 12 target round and you ll be home in time for lunch. Your scores may be collected or you can submit them online at such that your best 4 scores are used to gain your overall position in your class. Details and dates for shooting at various venues can be found on www. winterfieldarchery.co.uk and Dates for shooting at Panther Bowhunters are 3rd November. 1st December, 5th January, 2nd February and 2nd March. Arrive at 9.30 latest for a 10 am start. Arrive earlier and you get unlimited free practice instead of sighters. There will be a target fee of 3 for senior, but not for juniors. The chances are that if you shot the county championships, on 6th October, you will already have one score. If you did reasonably well, it would seem a shame to not to continue and gain your rewards. Go on, you know you want to. If you ve never shot a FITA Field round before, I have a booklet to guide you, but that s no good if you don t shoot the round. Page 7

Mayflower Distance Awards These are designed for the new archer to measure their own progress in the early stages. When a given score is attained at a given distance, it is understood that you are competent enough to progress to the next distance. Coloured badges are awarded according to the distance shot and all you need to do is shoot 36 arrows and attain a score of 200 with no misses. The awards are: Black 20 yards; White 30 yards; Blue 40 yards; Red 50 yards; Gold 60 yards; Green 80 yards. There is no fee, no judges or supervisor. Just set the stand with a 122 cm face at your chosen distance, starting at 20 yards anytime you like, record your three scores on separate score sheets, keep them and claim your badge from Lesley Howell. Archery GB Progress Awards Mayflower are subscribing to this award scheme for juniors. It is designed to provide beginners and younger archers with awards for developing their archery skills and the scheme can also be used as an adult beginner incentive. Badges will be awarded by target face colours, white, black, blue, red and gold according to scores. Scores that need to be attained vary according to age, sex, bowstyle and distance shot. They are more applicable to an outdoor range, but as we are shooting outdoors regularly now there will be opportunities to start during the winter months. See Carron Brown for full details of scores and how to get them. Gift Ideas! Mayflower Archers now offer a Gift vouchers scheme to cover the cost of a Beginner's course at 45. Should a friends or family member fancy trying archery, this could be an ideal Christmas or birthday present for the budding Archer! See David Scorah at club, telephone or contact him at david.scorah@mayflowerarchers.co.uk. Illustration only The FITA Beginner s Award Scheme has been designed to allow beginners in Archery to measure their progress against set standards. Their progress should be encouraged by the clubs and rewarded by the winning of FITA Feather and Arrow pins. The awards are based on three (3) attainments. Performance: Shooting a limited distance with the emphasis on making the target rather than high scores. Skill: Body position, position on line, releasing Knowledge & Know How s: Page 9 FITA Feather and Arrow Awards Range safety, basic bow set up The awards are split into two categories: 1) FEATHER AWARDS, for the youngest beginners, under 12 years of age and some disabled beginners. (It is up to the club coach to decide on an archer s eligibility). 2) ARROW AWARDS, these are for pre-teenagers, teenagers and adults. (The pre- teenagers will usually have already gained their feather awards). Anyone wishing to participate in this programme please contact David Scorah at scorah1@btinternet.com Or telephone him on

Points are claimed throughout the year for entering Open, County, Regional and National events, for claiming Rose and FITA awards or attaining a Six Gold End. The form is a pain to complete, but gives you an incentive to achieve. Full details in Archery UK, or see Lesley.
