1 Sacred Heart College Middle School CEA Newsletter Winter Issue 8, 11 June 2015 Training Schedule Winter A Reconciliation footy game to be played between Sacred Heart and Westminster has been organised by Senior School Stage 2 Aboriginal Studies students and there has been tremendous support for it among the lads at the Senior School. Sacred Heart players will wear a unique footy jumper designed by Year 12 student, Jaleel S, which tells the story of the game from planning stages to fruition. It looks amazing! The morning is a casual, family affair, with half-time acoustic entertainment and a sausage sizzle with proceeds to go to the Carlton R-12 School in Port Augusta. So, if you re free, drop by the Senior School on Sunday 14 June and support our students taking action to make a change. 2 We are still in need of Host Families!! If you would like to be part of this exciting opportunity to home-stay a Kogakuin Junior High School student for this short time, please contact Lynne Gainer on or ocec@tpg.com.au Kogakuin Junior High School students will be joining the Middle School for their English Study Program. 10 boys (aged yrs) will be arriving from Japan on Friday 24 July then departing Monday 10 August A payment will be made to cover hosting expenses. Football SHC MS B1 (5.5: 35) lost to Pulteney Grammar (9.11: 65) The B1s came up against Pulteney Grammar School at Vaughton Oval and unfortunately were beaten by approximately 3 goals. It was a gallant performance against another strong opposition, and I am continually growing prouder and prouder of our team and the way that they compete each week. Although I was very happy with all contributors on the day, the best players were Felix B (hardness and versatility playing successfully in multiple positions, as well as his ability to win the contested ball; Owen T (great forward-line presence and attack on the footy; Luke S (silky and clean in wet conditions and used the ball very well); Zachary M (rucking for much of the day against a much bigger opponent); Cooper G and Edward G (hardness and fearlessness in the contest, also some great tackles). I look forward to seeing how we respond in Wk 7. SHC MS B4 defeated SHCMS B2 The team had a tough game against the SHC MS B2 side. Ed F and Elliot H were good in defence while Max U won plenty of the ball in the mid-field. The boys are playing some good footy at the moment. Year 8 SHC MS B (2.2: 14) were defeated by St Michael s (12.9: 81) Again our Year 8B team met with some solid competition going down comfortably to St Michael s. The boys again showed good commitment throughout the game and continued to generate scoring opportunities into the last quarter. Michael C took a number of strong marks and also ran the ball well. Jackson D continued his consistent form; Page middle school music Evening You are invited to join us in the Middle School Music Performance Centre for Drums, 24 June 4pm and 5:30pm his work-rate was outstanding. Jack S is improving as the season progresses and attacked the ball hard. Arthur B and Harrison D both saw plenty of the footy. Tom H is gaining confidence overhead and again marked well. Table Tennis The Primary Table Tennis team played Prince Alfred College (home game) at Sacred Heart College. The SHC boys are becoming very confident in their skill and maneouvres. A friendly albeit competitive spirit in the gym. Thanks to all boys who displayed great sportsmanship and overall produced a 9 game win to PAC s 3 games. Congratulations to all boys and thanks to parents for their support.

3 Rugby 2015 middle school Ensemble Music Evening 28 May Year 8/9 SHC MS (43; 7 tries, 4 conversions) defeated Pembroke (10; 2 tries) Luke G showed great leadership qualities to guide the team through tough, wet conditions. Oliver J (1 try, 3 conversions); Jack F (2 tries, 1 conversion); Malachy L (2 tries); and Jayden S (1 try). 4 June Year 8/9 SHC MS (38; 6 tries, 4 conversions) defeated St Peter s (31; 5 tries, 3 conversions) The boys played as a team, with great passing, great tackling and great support for each other on display. Thank you to all players who filled in to cover injuries and the Year 9 players who were unable to play due to camp. Christian W (4 tries); Will K (1 try); Jack F (1 try); and Ethan G (4 conversions). You are invited to join us for this special event on Thursday 25 June at 5:30pm in the Middle School Music Performance Centre Also showcasing learning from the Arts, Languages and Technology Light refreshments will be provided Basketball 25 May SHC MS 8 (13) defeated SHC MS 11 (4) We only had half our team this week but we managed to win; a good effort by everyone. Great rebounds Daniel, strong boards Jon, defence is improving by both Blake and Alistair. Strong team play against number 7 from the other team. Please be mindful that the Middle School s grounds (and buildings) are smoke-free and pet-free zones. Thank you for your assistance. Page 3

4 Soccer 23 May SHC MS A (2) were defeated by Immanuel (4) SHC MS B2 (3) were defeated by Pulteney Grammar (7) Goals scored by Jordan R, Max McD and Alex F. Great effort by our goal keeper, Sam McK. SHC S B4 (0) were defeated by Woodcroft (7) Decisively out-played by a better skilled team, we spent most of the half defending a 5 0 deficit into the half-time break. Spirits were lifted by the coaches huddle at the break which resulted in a huge improvement in our second half game. We spent a lot more time on attack and some great opportunities were made up front. A true credit to the team for holding out to just a 2-0 deficit in the second half. Some players responded well to being put out of position in order to strengthen parts of our game that needed a lift, well done. Year 8 SHC MS B (4) defeated Cabra (2) It was a good outcome for the boys on Saturday with a 4:2 win against Cabra. Squash 29 May SHC MS 4 (10 games) defeated SHC MS 6 (2 games) Sam C came out of the blocks very fast winning the first two games quite comfortably. However, Fraser M turned the tables on the last game with some outstanding strokes; very entertaining from these two players. Harry R is in a class of his own. He is a very talented player with a very powerful serve, forehand and backhand strokes, and is also very fast around the court. Lachlan N did not stop trying in all of his games. Jordan B relied on his powerful (tennis) serve winning many points against his opponent. Jordan s placement of the ball is outstanding; a very classy player. Cameron W played himself back into the game by attacking his opponent s serve and placing the ball down the side wall; a great effort, never giving up. Tyler R was far too strong for his opponent this week. His placement of the ball, his serving has improved out of sight; a very talented player. Harry H played a very talented player this week. He fought every point in all games and never threw in the towel. His determination was outstanding; I was impressed, well done Harry. 29 May SHC MS 7 (4) were defeated by Temple College (8) Darcy B played Temple s No 1 undefeated player. Darcy is our No 1 player and had to give his young opponent a 5-point lead every game. Darcy waited until the last game to out-play his opponent (15 7 points). Darcy s powerful serve and hard hitting was too good for his opponent; a great effort. Henry McD out-played his opponent this week. Henry is improving every week with his skills and he was far too skilful for his opponent. Aaron J played a very skilful opponent his week. I was impressed with his effort and attitude, never giving up; a true Sacred Heart spirit. Nathan L was very unlucky to lose this week. He has improved with every game he plays. A very impressive serve and boast won him many points; a great effort, well done. 29 May SHC MS 8 (7) defeated Adelaide High (5) Daniel L played Adelaide s No 1 player. He played an outstanding game, with great serving and powerful strokes down the wall. Darcy R also played an incredible game this week. He was far too skilful for his opponent. Darcy s drop shot and powerful serving were highlights of his game. Harry M played his heart out. He had some very good rallies with his opponent. It was Harry s best game so far this term; a great effort. Tom W was too fast around the court for his opponent. His combination of powerful serves and placement of the ball was too skilful for his opponent. Cross Country Cross country is well and truly up and running! The first three races have been completed and our athletes have shown good dedication and improvements from last year. Welcome to all of the new athletes and parents. We hope you enjoy cross country running as much as we all do. Each week the races are hosted at various venues around Adelaide and as such, no course is the same. The boys can moderate their performances each week by looking at the athletes they finish with. At the first race we were rained upon which the boys enjoyed but we, the adults, found it quite cold just standing around waiting for the boys to come past and finish. However, Cross Country is a winter sport and we just have to put up with it. Race 1: Primary boys (1 lap) Bailey G, 7.55 (5th) Nicholas B, 8.26 (9th) Cooper G, 8.32 (10th) Junior Boys (2 laps) Caelum Y, (6th) Scott G, (7th) Henry McC, (10th) Nathan H, (14th) Page 4
