5 Game Reports NEW SOUTH WALES METRO vs SOUTH AUSTRALIA METRO SA Metro looked up for the fight early, gaining a lead behind a quick few points but once NSW Metro found their rhythm, there was no looking back. They pulled out to a nine-point lead in the first quarter and that margin continued to grow with Erica Pitman (15 points) and Kitty Henderson (ten points, seven rebounds) pacing them. VICTORIA COUNTRY vs NEW SOUTH WALES COUNTRY NSW Country s defence was exemplary from the opening tip and Vic Country could not penetrate as they found themselves trailing The physical nature of the contest ramped up in the second period which suited Vic Country and saw them begin to eat into the deficit, trailing by only eight at the main break. They then got within two points down the stretch but Zak Simons and Ryan Bath stayed calm for NSW Country and ensured the victory. QUEENSLAND SOUTH vs ACT ACT were the smaller team in this contest but that did not deter them as they kept up with Qld South through the first quarter. Following a time-out, Qld South stepped up their defence which saw them pull away slightly but ACT were still only down by nine at half-time. Natasha Lyall had 15 points and eight rebounds for the underdogs but Grace Ellis 18-point, ten-rebound double-double proved the difference in the end. TASMANIA vs VICTORIA METRO Vic Metro got into their running game early and made sure Tasmania never had a sniff. To their credit, the Tassie girls never gave in and the last quarter showed their fight and resolve but Gemma Potter led the way to a comfortable win for Vic Metro, collecting 28 points and 11 boards. Boys Pool A QUEENSLAND SOUTH vs SOUTH AUSTRALIA COUNTRY A full court press from Qld South took advantage of a SA Country side that looked a little lethargic out of the blocks. It enabled Qld South to open up a big lead by half-time and while SA Country showed signs in the second half that they are still a dangerous team, the margin was too great to pull back. GAME REPORTS NEW ZEALAND vs WA COUNTRY New Zealand looked strong early and had an aggressive offensive set-up with Mac Stodart adding 12 quick points. He rolled his ankle though and WA Country took advantage, pulling the margin back to tie the game at quarter-time. WA Country then moved in front but that sparked a resurgence in NZ who went on a second quarter blitz, turning around a five-point deficit into a 21-point lead which set up the win. REPORTS CONTINUTE ON THE NEXT PAGE...
6 Game Reports NSW COUNTRY vs SOUTH AUSTRALIA COUNTRY A strong team performance from NSW Country saw them come out blazing and their bench proved integral with Sara Matthews scoring 11 points while Rosanna Jennings pulled down 15 boards. They led by 21 at half-time but SA Country came together and with Tahlia Griffiths (19 points) and Portia Size (ten points, ten rebounds) leading the way, they staged a massive comeback. Four starters ended in double-figure scoring as a 27-6 third term paved the way for SA Country. NEW ZEALAND vs WA COUNTRY Turnovers marred the first quarter for WA Country and when they were able to break through the NZ defence, they still had trouble finishing which enabled their opponents to take control of the contest. Parris Mason and Caitlin O Connell made WA Country pay in transition as well as they extended their lead at every break to claim the victory. Boys Pool A TASMANIA vs VICTORIA METRO Tasmania came into this game with a strong intent and were able to match Vic Metro early while in the second term, the scores were kept low to Tasmania s advantage due to some intense defence from both sides. Taran Armstrong had 14 points for Tassie but Vic Metro s overall squad proved far too good in the end, running out the game well to earn a big win. QUEENSLAND NORTH 88 def. ACT 37 ACT took a 6-2 lead in the opening minutes but Qld North did not take long to find their own shooting range, answering with a 23-0 run. An energetic ACT team eventually ran out of steam with Qld North punishing them in transition and forcing them to take outside shots with Tamuri Wigness recording a double-double of 20 points and ten rebounds in 17 minutes. NORTHERN TERRITORY vs VICTORIA COUNTRY Vic Country tallied 29 points in the first quarter, leading by 23 and they scored 25+ in each subsequent term to easily crack the century mark. NT were led by Leah Sedan s 13 points but Jade Melbourne had 19 points in response while Piper Dunlop (ten rebounds) and Molly Althouse (11 boards) had a great battle under the rim. SA METRO vs VICTORIA COUNTRY SA Metro showed their ability to knock down the perimeter shots early which was cause for concern for Vic Country but when they utilised their work inside the paint as well, SA Metro were never going to be headed. Sebastian Griffin (21 points) and Joel Dyer (19 points off the bench) paced SA Metro as they claimed an important victory in terms of ladder positioning in Pool B. GAME REPORTS REPORTS CONTINUTE ON THE NEXT PAGE...
7 Game Reports NSW METRO vs QUEENSLAND NORTH Taking the ascendancy, NSW Metro moved ahead by six at quarter-time but Qld North fought back after the first break, outscoring their opposition by ten. The back-and-forth affair continued in the third period but NSW holding Qld North to singlefigure scoring and re-taking the lead and they then bucked the trend to hold off their opponents in the final term as all five starters scored in double-digits. WA METRO vs QUEENSLAND SOUTH Maddison Alone (12 points) got WA Metro started in this contest and set up a healthy lead for her side before Brooke Malone came off the bench to add another 12 points in just 16 minutes. With Ruby Hamilton dominating in the paint, WA Metro were able to answer anything Qld South threw at them, despite Arielle Williams-Mackey and Grace Ellis combining for 31 points off the bench and chipping away what was at one point, a 29-point advantage. Boys Pool A NORTHERN TERRITORY vs QUEENSLAND SOUTH Opening up a quarter-time lead, Qld South never looked back with Mojave King (21 points) and Riley Curtis (20 points) pacing seven players in double-figures. Zeb Hantelmann did his best in the paint for NT, tallying 15 points and eight rebounds but their defence could just not contain the Qld South offensive onslaught. ACT vs TASMANIA Leading by double-digits at the first change, Tasmania were able to extend their margin at every break behind Emerson Wells 13 points off the bench and Sharn Hayward who dominated at both ends of the court with 12 points, five assists and four steals. For ACT, Abby Solway got her way to the free-throw often for ten points but turnovers proved too costly for ACT, giving up 28 points. Men Pool A WA METRO vs NSW METRO In front of a big crowd, WA Metro used that support to open up a lead in the first half while holding NSW Metro to just 21 points. Their defence took a major hit though when John Ibukunoluwa suffered a shoulder injury which was bad enough to see him not return to the game. NSW Metro took advantage in the paint, taking the third quarter before Ethan Yetman (14 points) and Sila Tako s 11 points off the bench carried them to the comeback victory. Roosevelt Williams did all he could for WA Metro, scoring a game-high 25 points but the home team will rue their bad luck with injuries which could prove costly heading into the finals days of the group stage.
