6 STATION DEFINITIONS WATER We need to have a water station setup with three coolers of water and ice. The kids can top off their water bottles rather than us having cups on the ground. BREAKDOWN POSITION This is the basic starting point for all football movements. Players set their feet shoulder-width apart, squeeze their shoulder blades back, bend their knees and lower their hips to get into a low, pad-level position before bringing their hands in front of their bodies. We need to line up the kids and show them the breakdown position. 1. Knees bent, feet shoulder-width apart, upper body in a 45-degree forward lean, chin up and over the toes and weight on the balls of your feet (not your toes). 2. Players must be able to re-gather themselves in a Breakdown Position when buzzing feet 3. Teach progression: Feet - Squeeze - Sink - Hands BUZZ "Buzz" action describes taking heel-to-toe strides to close in on a ball carrier. Defensive players attack from a wide base, chopping their feet on either side of a cushioned bag while maintaining body control. Players buzz their feet and finish in the hit position, ready to deliver a strike. Here we have the players buzz down a lane, straddling a tackle dummy or half shields. Smaller kids may need to buzz down a line on the ground 1. Come to balance. 2. Take quick, choppy, heel-to-tie steps to bring the body under control while continuing to gain ground toward the ball-carrier. 3. One the defender is within striking distance of the ball-carrier, the defender buzzes his feet while widening his base and sinking his hips. 5

7 HIT From the breakdown position, players take a downhill power step into an imaginary hole, getting low in a staggered stance with their hands brought back to their hips, ready to explode up and through contact with an ascending blow. SHOOT This drill teaches players to open their hips to generate power through the tackle. From a kneeling position on the ground in front of the bag, players shoot their hips forward, keeping their heads and eyes up, and drive forward onto the bag. RIP "Rip" action describes an upper-body motion that replaces the conventional wrapup tackling technique. Rip action works with the Shoot to generate a rising blow up into the ball carrier that takes the tackler's head out of the collision. Players assume the Hit position in front of a horizontal bag held waist high. Players then snap their arms up with double uppercuts, open their hips to shoot forward and drive through the bag for 3 or 4 steps. CONE RACES Setup two series of cones that are in a straight line, five yards apart and parallel to each other. Divide the players into two teams and move them into single file lines behind each set of cones. Race them doing suicides down the line of cones encouraging competition. Near Foot, Near Shoulder Drill (NFNS SHORT) Place the players in two lines about 5 feet apart. Two coaches coach will stand up a tackle dummy about 1 yard away, positioned in the center between the two lines forming a triangle. Taking turns with each line, the player does a near foot, near shoulder approach to the tackle dummy and then performs a near foot, near should tackle. Make sure the player keeps his/her head to the leverage side and finishes off the tackle with proper form. 6

8 ROUTES At this station, the coach will be responsible for teaching basic routes and how to catch the ball given the situation. i.e. thumbs together when it is above your sternum, pinky s together when below the sternum and palms facing the ball / quarterback. Try to also teach the importance of when to look at the quarterback, when to slow down, and when they have run too far. Younger kids tend to keep running down the field not knowing that the quarterback cannot throw them the ball that distance. 7

9 LADDERS Here we will lay out the two ladders on the ground and rotate the kids through footwork drills. 8

10 PARACHUTE RACES Using the two chutes that we have on hand, make two lines of kids sized up to ability, and run races wearing the parachutes. Probably want to go yards for the larger kids and a shorter distance for the smaller ones. KICKOFF / RETURN Just like it says. Setup a station with a T and line the kids up. 1. Line up the kids behind the T. 2. Send one kid down field to recover the ball. 3. Once the ball has been kicked, the kicker goes down field to recover the next ball. 4. Once the man down field recovers the ball, then run back to the end of the line (outside of the kicking zone to not impede the drill), handing off the ball to the next person in line FOUR CORNERS Place 4 cones in a square 8 to 10 yards apart. Move to each cone using a different type of movement and a predefined pattern. For example, you might start at the back-left cone, sprint forward to the front left cone, shuffle laterally to the front right cone, crossover diagonally to the starting cone, then sprint to the back-right cone. The pattern and sequence of movements can easily be varied to make the drill more challenging. A few sample movement patterns are: 1. Sprint, backpedal, shuffle, backpedal 2. Shuffle, sprint, crossover, sprint 3. Backpedal, shuffle, sprint, crossover Near Foot, Near Shoulder Drill (NFNS LONG) Place the players in two lines about 10 feet apart. The coach will stand up a tackle dummy about 5-10 yards away, positioned in the center between the two lines forming a triangle. Taking turns with each line, the player does a near foot, near shoulder approach to the tackle dummy and then performs a near foot, near should tackle. 11 Near Foot, Near Shoulder Physio Ball Drill (NFNS Ball) Line up the players in a single file. The coach stands about ten yards away from the players with a physio ball. Have the player track the ball using a near foot, near shoulder technique as the coach bounces it in different directions, velocities and force. Make sure the player rips through the ball and does NOT tackle the ball. HAND-OFF RELAY The purpose of this drill is for the kids to understand the proper technique for handing off the ball. We want to have two cones setup about 7 10 yards apart with the kids divided into two lines behind each cone. The two single file lines should be facing each other. You need to have a football at each line. Here are the steps: 1. In line 1, the football is given to the 2 nd person in line. 2. In line 2, the 2 nd football is given to the 1 st person in line. 3. The first player from line 1 runs down the field and TAKES a handoff from the line After the person in line 2 GIVES the handoff, they run down the field taking a handoff from line Once the player TAKES the handoff they must give the ball to the person in the front of the line that they just ran too, and got to the end of the line. 6. Practice TAKING and GIVING handoffs to both sides of the line ensuring that the proper elbows up on the side of the QB is used. 7. Also, make sure the runner takes the handoff with their body with proper clamping of the arms RATHER than hand to hand exchange. This will improve ball security.
