Mayflower Junior Archers Junior News Happy New Year all our Readers I trust that you got all that new and upgraded archery equipment that you asked from Santa. I was very lucky. Santa bought me a replacement release aid and a portable bow press. Excellent, just what I needed to rebuild and restring my bow. All I need now is to get out and get shooting. Issue No. 32 January 2015 Inside this issue: Mayflower Results 2 If Santa did bring you some new kit, now s the time to get some practice and work off all that Christmas pudding you ve been eating. Just as a start, the junior outdoor sessions continue every month and the next is on 10th January. If the outdoors is too cold, try coming along on Friday evenings to meet all your club mates. There are plenty of tournaments coming up, all inside where it s comparatively warm. Mayflower Results & Mayflower shoots Mayflower shoots Archery Trivia Summer Metrics November Challenge County top ten s Hot News! James Howell, in his first year of adulthood has been selected as a member of the GB Elite squad. That means he s one of the best in the country along with Duncan Busby, Adam Ravenscroft and a few more. It also means he ll be in line for International shoot selection. More expense for Mum and Dad! Some good events coming up Tournament Diary 6 Award Schemes 7 Club Diary National Awards Some excellent indoor tournaments coming up for the new and inexperienced junior archer are the Racketts Portsmouth on 23 rd February and West Essex Graham Sibley Portsmouth on 7 th March. Then early in the outdoor season there should be the Havering Youth Tournament on 18 th April and West Essex Bowmen junior invitation shoot on 2 nd May. Both the Havering Youth and West Essex tournaments are excellent for gaining competition experience having friendly judges and no pressure. Details will be available when entry forms are published. At the field, Steve and I plan our usual monthly rounds (we ve been organising them for 9 years) where you can gain basic experience of tournaments or some early season practice. We think we ll start with a short four dozen Warwick round building up to a nine dozen Albion and Windsor round. They should get you in shape for the summer. Details can be found on the Tournaments and Club Diary pages. Good shooting, Roger Back page National Indoor range at Coventry

Tournament results for Mayflower Essex County FITA Field Championships, 5 th October Not a popular shoot with our junior members, but good shooting from Alex Body, Emily Mallion and Grace Butterfield who all won gold medals in their classes. If you fancy trying FITA Field, there is a 12 target round at Panther on 4 th Jan, 1 st Feb and 1 st March. But beware, you must be able to shoot your distance fairly accurately. The next County Championship round is a FITA18 on 14/15 th March. Racketts AC Portsmouth, 19 th October Always a popular event with a full target list, but no entries from Mayflower juniors. Oh well! Hawks AC WA 18m plus head to head 25 th October A good start to the indoor season for Emily Mallion in her first ever world record status head to head tournament. After winning against Megan Fosberry, Emily was knocked out by Andréa Gales, UK s no. 1 by only 8 points in a 15 arrow match so no shame there considering the difference in their experience. Mike Judd was ranked 2 nd and won all his matches to win overall while Charles Mallion despite being ranked 10 th won most of his matches only to lose out in the bronze medal match to 3 rd ranked Thomas Taylor. Like Emily, it was his first ever world record status tournament. Mayflower FITA th October Good news also for both Emily Short and Mallion at Mayflower s FITA 18 competition who both won medals in the junior girls compound class. Junior Girls compound Emily Mallion Gold medal, Emily Short Bronze medal Some of our seniors also did well in the medals table. Phil Glover Gold Gents compound, Mike Judd Gold Gents Recurve, Sophie Brown Silver Ladies compound. Family Team Ian and Helen Harris Bronze medal, Compound team Phil Glover & Sophie Brown Gold medal Clophill Junior Portsmouth 8 th November Alex Body is another who likes to travel around a bit this time gaining a bronze medal in a record status tournament. Well done Alex. West Essex Portsmouth 9 th November Another good event and popular with a lot of Mayflower members with quite a haul of medals. Bet they don t ask us back next year! Emily Owens Bronze, Emily Mallion Gold, Emily Short Silver, Graham Owens 22 nd, Darren Short 25 th, Andy Galloway 28 th, Michael Judd Gold, Alex Body Gold, Marie Galloway 8 th Nathan Galloway 9 th, Natalie Galloway 5 th, Charles Mallion Bronze The earliest book on archery in English was Toxophilus, written in 1545 by Roger Ascham who dedicated it to Henry VIII. Ascham coined the name Toxophilus from two Greek words (toxon, bow and Philos, study). The science of archery became known as toxophily, meaning lover of the bow. Thus, a devotee of archery is known as a Toxophilite. Page 2

Tournament results for Mayflower Chelmsford Tudor Rose Archers WA 18m 16 th November Grace Butterfield Gold medal and, Emily Mallion Silver medal. Some of our seniors did rather well with Matt Webb winning gold medal and Mike Judd with Silver. The recurve team of Matt, Mike and Grace won gold medal while Charles Mallion and Ian Harris won the compound team bronze medal. Allington Castle Worcester and Portsmouth 30 th November Our dynamic father/daughter team have been on the road again this time trying their hands at different rounds on the same day. Silver medal for Emily Mallion with a 272 Worcester and 559 Portsmouth 6 th place for Charles scoring a 289 Worcester and 570 Portsmouth Junior National Indoor Champs 6 th December Good to see the enthusiasm of some of our juniors in entering the national championships. No medals this time, but reasonable results for some considering the challenge of a few with lesser experience. Kieran Greaves 22 nd Hannah Godden 30 th Alex Body 6 th Emily Owens 22 nd Grace Butterfield 5 th Emily Short 5 th Emily Mallion 5 th Racketts AC Worcester 14 th December Always a good shoot, but not supported by Mayflower this year except for our dynamic duo and Alex. Gold medal for Alex Body with 277, but scored 283 on the second session, Bronze medal for Emily Mallion in the Ladies compound class ably supported by Charles. Mayflower Fun shoots 3D Field shoot 18 th October Our 3D shoots are always popular with Mayflower members where we get a bigger turnout that all the target rounds we organise. After a few complaints that the Meerkat was too small, we gave it a rest in March, but felt devious enough to give him another outing. Too small? He took so many arrows this time we think we ll use him more often. I just hope we can get another before his retirement. We have a few targets that we need to retire and put out to graze. So who wants large or small targets for our March round? Report and photo s on the club website. Halloween shoot 1 st November A scary few hours for some scary looking archers shooting at scary targets. Then, as daylight faded they turned on the floodlights casting shadows over the items on the butts. In the spirit of the event, out came the scary looking cakes baked by our scary looking chef. Despite all this I m told that all members thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thanks to Lesley for organising it all once again. Photo s on the club website. Page 3

Junior Christmas Party 29 th November Thanks to Mark Robinson for organising it. Julie Bishop Report and photo s on the club website. Christmas Fun Shoot 20 th December The Junior Christmas Party was a climbing afternoon at Basildon Sporting Village. All juniors were invited and those who came enjoyed a fun afternoon. Plus the Dads that joined in as well. As the afternoon wore on it was a case of higher and faster as confidence grew. A great afternoon in great company. The last fun shoot of the year when around 30 members turned up, some in seasonal attire to shoot at seasonal targets and share some seasonal food in a social atmosphere. No compound bows, no bows over 30 lb and no sights caused a few problems for some compound archers, but they soon got into the swing of Barebow recurve. An enjoyable few hours made even better with excellent cakes being provided by Janice and Marie. And they were rather yummy! Thanks to Steve Fenton for organising it all once again. Full report and photo s on the club website. Thanks to all for organising these events and to who supplied reports and photo s. It makes for more fun in writing the newsletter and hope it makes for more interesting reading. Archery Trivia Fact or myth, you tell me! Lottie Dod, who won the Wimbledon ladies singles five times in , was also a golf champion and took silver in 1908 Olympic archery. Many deities and heroes from different cultures are portrayed as archers such as Cupid, Artemis, Apollo, Heracles and Shiva. Even after firearms had been invented, many armies still preferred to use bows and arrows. The word snapshot was first used in It meant to fire at a fast moving target without aiming properly. I know a few archers who don t aim properly! Archer s Way in Doncaster was formerly called Butt Hole Road. In 2011, Matt Stutzman claimed a Guinness world record for the longest accurate shot by hitting a target at 230 yards. Matt was born without arms and doesn t use prosthetics. If you remember, Matt was also a compound silver medallist at the 2012 Paralympic games. In a standard 70m round, not including practice, an archer will walk 1.8 km (1.2 miles) from the waiting line. A recurve archer drawing 40 lb will draw a total of 2880 lb (1307 kg) while a compound archer drawing 60 lb will draw a total of 4320 lb (1961 kg). Don t forget, fitness counts! Page 4

GNAS Summer Metric postal tournament The results are out and there has been a bit of a mess up at GNAS HQ because for some reason they added 100 points to Kieran s score. I know he s a good lad, but scores are scores and as GNAS insist, they should be correct. I ve received no complaints, but did cause chaos at GNAS when I advised them. The correct Mayflower scores and positions are as shown below. November Challenge Thank you all who submitted scores and hopefully, results should be available for the mid February short newsletter. A summary of scores is given below. By the way, I took the liberty of correcting scores where the 9 ring had been included in the Gold total. Only 10 s count as gold for indoor rounds. 7 Mayflower Distance Awards These are designed for the new archer to measure their own progress in the early stages. When a given score is attained at a given distance, it is understood that you are competent enough to progress to the next distance. Coloured badges are awarded according to the distance shot and all you need to do is shoot 36 arrows and attain a score of 200 with no misses. The awards are: Black 20 yards; White 30 yards; Blue 40 yards; Red 50 yards; Gold 60 yards; Green 80 yards. There is no fee, no judges or supervisor. Just set the stand with a 122 cm face at your chosen distance, starting at 20 yards anytime you like, record your three scores on separate score sheets, keep them and claim your badge from Lesley Howell. Archery GB Progress Awards The scheme is for younger archer to develop their skills and can also be used as an adult beginner incentive. Badges will be awarded by target face colours, white, black, blue, red and gold according to scores attained. Scores can be attained in or outdoors and vary according to age, sex, bowstyle and distance shot. All you need do is to make a note of your 3 dozen scores and submit them to claim the appropriate award. At any round you shoot save your first 3 dozen score, or you may shoot a score at a club meeting (save them on a score sheet) then send then to Kerry Owens at kerry. burnettowens@gmail.com or see her at club. Sounds easy doesn t it? Then get collecting and sending to claim your award. Gift Ideas! Mayflower Archers now offer a Gift vouchers scheme to cover the cost of a Beginner's course at 45. Should a friends or family member fancy trying archery, this could be an ideal Christmas or birthday present for the budding Archer! See David Scorah at club, telephone or contact him at david.scorah@mayflowerarchers.co.uk. Illustration only The FITA Beginner s Award Scheme has been designed to allow beginners in Archery to measure their progress against set standards. Their progress should be encouraged by the clubs and rewarded by the winning of FITA Feather and Arrow pins. The awards are based on three (3) attainments. Performance: Shooting a limited distance with the emphasis on making the target rather than high scores. Skill: Body position, position on line, releasing Knowledge & Know How s: FITA Feather and Arrow Awards Range safety, basic bow set up The awards are split into two categories: 1) FEATHER AWARDS, for the youngest beginners, under 12 years of age and some disabled beginners. (It is up to the club coach to decide on an archer s eligibility). 2) ARROW AWARDS, these are for pre-teenagers, teenagers and adults. (The pre- teenagers will usually have already gained their feather awards). Anyone wishing to participate in this programme please contact David Scorah at scorah1@btinternet.com Or telephone him on Page 7
