1 YUKINOBU NAKATANI National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences, Tsukuba CIMICICAPSUS POPPIUS A SEPARATE GENUS, WITH DESCRIPTION OF NEW SPECIES (HETEROPTERA: MIRIDAE) Nakatani, Y., Cimicicapsus Poppius a separate genus, with description of new species (Heteroptera: Miridae). Tijdschrift voor Entomologie 144: , figs [ISSN ]. Published 1 December The deraeocorine plant bug genus Cimicicapsus is considered as a separated genus, not a subgenus of Deraeocoris Kirschbaum. Three East Asian species of Cimicicapsus are reported, including a description of a new species C. miyakei from Amami Is., Ryukyus, Japan. Yukinobu Nakatani, Laboratory of Insect Systematics, Natural Resources Inventory Center, National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences, Kannondai, 3-1-3, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, , Japan; nakatany@niaes.affrc.go.jp Key words. Heteroptera; Miridae; Deraeocorinae; Cimicicapsus; Deraeocoris; new species; East Asian. Cimicicapsus Poppius, 1915a, originally established as a distinct genus, was recently demoted to subgeneric rank within Deraeocoris Kirschbaum, 1855 by Kerzhner & Schuh (1995). However, their treatment remains questionable because polyphyly of the genus Deraeocoris was frequently suggested (e. g. Schuh 1995) and its subgeneric classification is therefore problematic. In the present paper, three East Asian species of Cimicicapsus are reported, and the taxonomic status of the genus is discussed. All measurements are given in millimeters. Material examined, including types, is deposited in the National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences, Tsukuba, Japan, except for several specimens, where the name of depository follows the specimen s data. STATUS OF CIMICICAPSUS POPPIUS Kerzhner & Schuh (1995) treated Cimicicapsus as a subgenus of Deraeocoris based on the general resemblance of Cimicicapsus species and with other Deraeocoris species. However, Cimicicapsus exhibits quite different characters, which sufficiently isolate it from Deraeocoris: e. g. presence of paddle-like setae on tarsomeres III, which therefore have the appearance of the fossula spongiosa observed on apically on the tibia of Nabidae, semicircular left paramere with elongate process of sensory lobe, phallothecae with a large triangular plate. These characters are also considered to be synapomorphies shared with Apoderaeocoris Nakatani et al., 2000, which is one of the possible sistergroups of Cimicicapsus. Further, several characters, mainly observed on the genitalia, such as the asymmetrical phallotheca, the arrangement of vesical sclerites and the presence of furrows on basal vesicae, may indicate that Cimicicapsus is related to other deraeocorine genera, such as Dortus Distant, 1910 rather than to representatives of the genus Deraeocoris. Therefore, it seems appropriate to treat Cimicicapsus as a separate genus. Cimicicapsus Poppius gen. rev. Cimicicapsus Poppius, 1915a: 41. Type species: Cimicicapsus parviceps Poppius, 1915 [designated by Kerzhner 1993: 99]; Poppius 1915b: 83, Carvalho 1957: 56. [syn. by Kerzhner & Schuh 1995: 4]. Deraeocoris (Cimicicapsus): Kerzhner & Schuh 1995: 4, Kerzhner & Josifov 1999: 37. Deraeocoris: Schuh 1995: 601 (in part). Recognized by oval body covered with dense upright hairs; rather porrect head, setose compound eye, pronotum and hemelytra furnished with distinct punctures and densely hairy legs. This genus can be separated from Deraeocoris Kirschbaum by calli furnished with a hollow near each antero-lateral margin (fig. 4), dense paddle-like setae ventrally on the apical part of tarsomere III (figs. 5-7), and specific genital structure described below, and from Apoderaeocoris 253

2 TIJDSCHRIFT VOOR ENTOMOLOGIE, VOLUME 144, Figs Adults of Cimicicapsus spp. 1, C. parviceps, type, male; 2, C. koreanus; 3, C. miyakei sp. n., paratype, female. Nakatani et al., by the following characters: longer and more porrect head; dorsum densely covered with hairs; window-like structure of phallotheca. Description of genital structure Male. Left paramere semicircular; sensory lobe with an elongate protuberance; hypophysis flattened, apical part sparsely covered with minute setae. Vesica usually with four or five sclerites; dorsal membranous lobe well developed with field of spines; left side of vesica basally highly sclerotized with three longitudinal furrows and a complicated cavity. Phallotheca asymmetric; apex with a large plate; right side of apical part with window-like structure. Female. Sclerotized rings depressed, accompanied by a pair of dorsal labiate plates; bursa copulatrix laterally with a pair of lobal structures; a large sclerotized plate covering anterior region of bursa copulatrix. Note The genus Deraeocoris includes several species, which show some relationship with Cimicicapsus (e. g. D. montanus Hsiao, 1941, and D. alticallus Hsiao, 1941). However, since I have not examined the specimens of these species, I defer to recombine them here. Cimicicapsus parviceps Poppius comb. rev. Note Poppius (1915a) noted that the type material comprises two female specimens. However, one type specimen which I borrowed from DEI (Deutiches Entomogisches Institut, Eberswarde) was found to be a male, and examination of the other one was not possible. Therefore, I refrain form a lectotype designation at the present time. Material examined. TAIWAN: 1 (syntype) Kankou, Koshun, iv-v. 1912, H. Sauter (DEI). Cimicicapsus koreanus (Linnavuori) comb. n.
