Length nd number of rticles of the crpus of the second pereiopod is not correlted with size. The pleur of the fih bdominl segment in femles (especilly ovigerous femles) hve very indistinct posterior tooth, in mles this tooth is more prominent. Systemtic position. Ten species of Lysmt re known from the Atlntic: L. nchisteus Chce, 1972; L. grbhmi (Gordon, 1935); L. intermedi (Kingsley, 1878); L. moorei (Rthbun, 1901); L. nilit Dohrn & Holthuis, 1950; L. rthbune Chce, 1970; L. seticudt (Risso, 1816); L. stenolepis Crosnier & Forest, 1973; L. uncicornis Holthuis & Murin, 1952; L. wurdemnni (Gibbes, 1850). L. nchisteus is known from Puerto Rico to Grnd, western Atlntic in depths less thn 3 meters. It differs from L. olvoi in the scphocerite not overreching the ntennulr peduncle; the presence of only one postorbitl dorsl rostrl tooth; the presence of only one ventrl rostrl tooth; the bsence of pterygostomin tooth; the pleur of the fourth bdominl pleur being posteriorly rounded. L. olvoi ws compred with mteril of L. nchisteus from Curso, Crriben Se (RMNH D 30376) nd the type-description (CHACE 1972). L. grbhmi is known from tropicl nd subtropicl regions in the western, centrl nd estern Atlntic in depths to bout 60 m. It differs from L. olvoi by the scphocerite not overreching the ntennulr peduncle; the rostrum nd ntennulr peduncle being longer in reltion to the crpce length; in colourtion: L. grbhmi hving two bright red dorsolterl longitudinl bnds seprted by white dorsl bnd. L. olvoi ws compred with specimens of L. grbhmi from the Cnry Islnds (RMNH D 40154) nd the type-description by GORDON (1935). L. intermedi Kingsley, 1878 is shllow wter species known from depths to 22 m, originlly described from the Dry Tortugs, Florid, nd figured by Kingsley in The species is recorded in the western Atlntic from Bermud to Brzil, in the centrl Atlntic from Ascension (MANNING & CHACE 1990: 23) nd in the estern Atlntic from the Azores (RATH- BUN 1901: 116); in the estern Pcific it ws recorded from the Gulf of Cliforni to Peru. It differs from L. olvoi in hving the ccessory brnch of the dorso-lterl ntennulr flgellum well developed; the stylocerite reching nerly to, or beyond the distl mrgin of the bsl segment of the ntennulr peduncle. L. olvoi ws compred with mteril of L. intermedi from Arub, Cribben (RMNH D 4767) nd the description nd figures given by SLVERTSEN (1933). RATHBUN (1901:116) recorded L. intermedi from Pim By, Fyl, Azores (Lewis Dexter coll.). The lrge femle specimen ws reexmined by MANNING & CHACE (1990: 23) nd found to be correctly identified. L. moorei (Rthbun, 1901) is known from the tropicl western, centrl nd estern Atlntic occurring in tide-pools nd the littorl zone. L. moorei differs from L. olvoi in hving only one postorbitl dorsl rostrl tooth; in the bsence of pterygostomin tooth; in the shorter nd more robust ntennulr peduncle; in hving the ccessory brnch of the dorso-lterl ntennulr flgellum well developed. L. olvoi ws compred with mteril of L. moorei from Arub, Cribben (RMNH D 4768) nd the description nd figures given by RATHBUN (1901). L. nilit Dohrn & Holthuis, 1950 is known from the estern Atlntic (Cnry Islnds) nd the Mediterrnen, occurring in shllow wter. It differs from L. olvoi by the stylocerite overreching the first segment of the ntennulr peduncle; by the ccessory brnch of the dorsolterl ntennulr flgellum being well developed; by the more robust mbultory pereiopods; by the colourpttern composed of brod drk ornge bnds cross the body. L. olvoi ws compred with the holotype nd prtypes of L. nilit from the western prt of the By of Npels, Mediterrnen (RMNH D 7258) nd the description nd figures of DOHRN & HOLTHUIS (1950). L. rthbune Chce, 1970 is known from estern Florid to Yuctn, western Atlntic, in depths between 37 nd 119 m. It differs from L. 67
6 olvoi by the rostrum overreching the ntennulr peduncle; the pterygostomin tooth being usully bsent; the stylocerite being less thn hlf the length of the bsl segment of the ntennulr peduncle; the pleur of the fourth bdominl segment being postero-lterlly rounded. L. olvoi ws compred with the type-description of L. rthbune by CHACE (1970). L. seticudt is known from the Mediterrnen nd the estern Atlntic from Morocco to the British Isles, occurring in depths to bout 15 m. It differs from L. olvoi in the stylocerite overreching the bsl segment of the ntennulr peduncle; in hving the ccessory brnch of the dorso-lterl ntennulr flgellum well developed; in the scphocerite being twice s long s the ntennulr peduncle; in the colourpttern composed of longitudinl red stripes on the body. L. olvoi ws compred with mteril from the By of Nples, Mediterrnen (RMNH D 14274). In 1973 CROSNIER & FOREST described L. stenolepis from deep wter off So Tigo, Cpe Verde Islnds. One mle (pocl 4.5 mm) ws cught t depth between 275 nd 150 m by the Tlismn in The specimen differs from L. olvoi in the denttion of the rostrum. In L. stenolepis the rostrum is lmost without ventrl lmin nd bers only one smll ventrl tooth. In the mteril of L. olvoi mles nd femles of different sizes hve three to five ventrl rostrl teeth. The number of fused segments of the ntennule dorso-lterl flgellum number 17 in L. stenolepis, much fewer thn in L. olvoi. This however could be correlted with body size. The pleur of the fourth bdominl segment in L. stenolepis hve more cute postero-lterl pex thn in L. olvoi. The specimen of L. stenolepis is incomplete, ll mbultory pereiopods re missing, nd it is of much smller size which mkes comprison with L. olvoi difficult. More mteril of L. stenolepis from the type-loclity hs to be collected to estblish the vribility of the vrious chrcters. L. uncicornis is known from the estern Atlntic from Morocco to Congo, occurring in shllow wters. L. uncicornis differs from L. olvoi in the bsence of the pterygostomin tooth; the bsence of the postero-lterl tooth on the fourth bdominl pleur; the broder scphocerite. L. olvoi ws compred with the holotype nd prtypes of L. uncicornis from the hrbour of Csblnc, Morocco (RMNH D 7812), nd the type-description of HOLTHUIS & MAURIN (1952). L. wurdemnni (Gibbes, 1850) is known from the western Atlntic from Virgini to Estdo de So Pulo, Brzil, occurring in depths to 30 m. L. wurdemnni differs from L. olvoi in hving the pleur of the fourth bdominl segment postero-lterlly rounded; in the bsence of the pterygostomin tooth; in hving the mbultory pereiopods more robust. L. olvoi ws compred with mteril of L. wurdemnni from French Guyn (RMNH D 12643). Lysmt olvoi is deep wter species. The other Atlntic Lysmt, except L. stenolepis, seem littorl or sublittorl but hve not been found deeper thn bout 120 m.
