We got 1.4 inches of rainfall for May The water temperature is 93 F at the surface. Secchi is at 21 inches. It has been a very dry May and this heat and drought has effected the fishing. Anglers should now be in their summer time fishing pattern because the fish sure are. The best fishing is in the first two and last two hours of the day. Overall monthly harvest numbers are down along with angler attendance, but calendar yearto-date is around average.
Bass fishing has been slowing down. I had reports of about 6 slot bass being caught for the month of May. I think there was only three fish that were over 7 pounds reported.
Around the first of May, we had Jay Haffner come to Lake LU with the state shock boat and conduct an electro-fishing survey of the lake. Here is a photo of our biggest bass that was shocked up that day. It weighed 9 pounds and was measured and released back to the lake.
Buddy Besent won the title of Bass Angler of the Month Award. Buddy caught this nice 7.5-pound bass on a black and red plastic worm. This bass was released back to the lake.
Mike Sellers caught this nice bass back in April and I forgot to include it in the newsletter.
Bill Messick came by the lake last week and tried his luck. He caught a nice eating size bass but didn t get any others. The removal of these small bass will really help the overall fishery. REMINDER: Alabama's Free Fishing Day Scheduled for June 11, Each calendar year, the Commissioner of Conservation and Natural Resources designates a "Free Fishing Day" for the public to fish recreationally
in public waters without a fishing license. This applies to both residents and non-residents alike. Saturday, June 11, 2016, is designated as Free Fishing Day. I would like to remind everyone that I call this Alabama No License Day. All lake permit fees and boat rental fees still apply BASS HARVEST REGULATION Anglers have an unlimited bass harvest at Lake LU, as long as the bass is less than 14 inches in total length. In addition, anglers may also harvest 1 fish greater than 22 inches in total length, per person, per day at Lake LU. Please continue to encourage anglers to harvest small bass. ~ Jay Haffner
The weather has gotten hot and so has the bream fishing. Bluegill fishing is a bit slower as compared to times in the past.
Sean Chambers had a nice catch one day. He was using small red wigglers as bait.
Sean Chambers with two of his biggest slabs that he caught off the pier that day.
I think this is a photo of James Mills with a one-and-ahalf-pound bluegill that he caught one day.
Bream are so hungry that they will even hit a bass crank bait! My assistant manager John Womer caught this bluegill on a crankbait on one of his off days. Photo by John Womer.
April showers bring May flowers. The UWA Blackland Prairie Restoration Area is in full bloom. Black eyed Susan, Rudbeckia hirta.
Butterfly milkweed, Asclepias tuberosa. Pale purpleconeflower, Echinacea pallida.
Purple prairie clover, Dalea purpurea. REMINDER: June 4, 2016 is American Hiking Society s National Trails Day, the country s largest celebration of trails. National Trails Day events will take place in every state across the country and will include hikes, biking and horseback rides, paddling trips, birdwatching, geocaching, gear demonstrations, stewardship projects and more.
For more information, visit the American Hiking Society s website at: If anyone wants any information regarding fishing, nature trails or prairie wildflower blooming times, please give me a call at or me at lrr@uwa.edu.
