The county was established in February, 1799 from portions of Cumberland and Lincoln Counties. The name Kennebec is derived from the Eastern Abenaki, meaning "large body of still water, large bay." Kennebec County also comprises the Augusta Micropolitan Statistical Area. There is plenty to see and do here in Kennebec County and the Augusta Area.
