2 Research Areas The Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) was established in November 1975 by the Research Institutes Establishment Order of The Institute conducts research in the following areas: Abundance, distribution and other biological characteristics of species s of fish and other marine forms of life and practical methods of their rational exploitation and utilization; Physical, geological and geophysical characteristics of the Nigerian territorial waters and the high seas beyond; Effects of pollution in the Nigerian coastal waters and its prevention; Improvement of brackish water fishing and fish culture; Design and fabrication of simple fisheries implements and equipment; The nature of the marine environment, including weather forecasting, seabed topography and characteristics and deposits; Fish utilization and The socio economic problems of exploitation of the resources of the t seas and brackish water.

5 Identification of New Fisheries Resources NIOMR research survey carried out in the near shore waters, coastal lagoons and estuaries established these areas as nursery grounds for explioted fisheries resources. Stock assessment also carried out from time to time.

11 FISH TECHNOLOGY AND BIO TECHNOLOGY Design, fabrication and patented fish smoking kiln capable of drying 250kg of fish within 6 hours. Fabrication and Installation of over 10 smoke drying equipment for corporate organizations Canning of Tuna, Bonga, sardinella, drift fish, Ariomma spp. Production of fishmeal from by products Post Harvest loss Assessment
