Main consumed species are European hake, chub mackerel, Atlantic horse mackerel, amberjack, European seabass, gilt-head seabream and saddled seabreams. From a socio-demographic point of view, regular fish consumers belong mainly to age classes years and over 55 years. Young people also tend to eat fish frequently in. This age group has the lowest number of regular consumers across the EU. Regular fish consumers in all sociodemographic groups is lower than the EU average (source: EU consumer habits regarding fishery and aquaculture products ). Maltese consume especially fresh and tinned products, while loose fish is more frequently consumed (4%) than the EU average ().
