1 Name: Aquarium of the Pacific Bio 20 Field Trip (60 pts.) Guidelines For The Trip: 1. Parking in the aquarium parking structure costs $8. 2. Pick up a visitor s guide and the handout listing the exhibit show times. Your visitor s guide contains pictures and names of animals that you will be seeing. Use this information to assist you with this handout. View at least one exhibit show and complete assignment below. 3. Use your class notes and information presented by the aquarium to answer these questions. (You ll notice that much of this information you ve already learned from class.). 4. The aquarium closes at 6 pm so use your time wisely to complete all questions. Turn assignment in at the beginning of the next class meeting. Exhibit Show (Use handout in Visitor s Guide to determine show times) (6 pts): 1. What was the name of the presentation that you attended? 2. Give a brief summary of what the presentation was about. 3. State two facts that you learned in this presentation that you thought were the most interesting.

2 Honda Blue Cavern, Southern California/Baja Gallery, & Shark Lagoon, (9 pts): A fish s body shape is largely determined by its habitat. View the fish in any of these galleries and find specific fish that fit the following shape descriptions. For each shape description: a) Identify and draw one fish species that exhibits that shape. Use fish I.D. guide in the visitors guide to assist you with fish names. b) State the fish s habitat: In order to determine habitat, observe where the fish spends most of its time within the tank. Ex. pelagic (above sea floor), benthic (on sea floor), within rocks, or within kelp. 3 2. The Amber Kelp Forest (4 pts): What phylum does kelp belong to? (Find in your class notes.) What is the compound found in kelp that is processed and used in many foods and medicines? (Find in your class notes.) Name an organism that you observed in these tanks living in the following levels of the kelp forest. Use fish I.D. guide in the visitors guide to assist you with fish names: a) Top of kelp (canopy): b) Middle of kelp: c) Bottom of kelp: 3. Abalone (2 pts) State the phylum that this animal falls under (class notes) and state why it has been drastically decreasing. Shark Lagoon (Outside/1 st Floor) (3 pts): Also view the large sharks at the lower level underwater viewing area. 1. What Class does sharks, rays and skates fall under? (class notes) 2. Gently rub your fingers back and forth on the skin of a shark in the touch tank: What specific structures (unique to cartilaginous fish) cause the shark s skin to feel smooth in one direction and rough in the other direction? 3. How do you tell male sharks from female sharks? Southern California Steelhead Story (Outside/1 st Floor) (2 pts): 1. State the name of the type of fish migration pattern that these fish experience and describe where they migrate to. (class notes and on display)

4 Southern California/Baja Gallery (Outside/2 nd Floor) 1. Seal & Sea Lion Exhibit (5 pts): State the Order that these animals fall under. (class notes) These animals still depend on spending part of their lives on land. What do they do on land? (class notes) Observe the seals and sea lions. Describe the following differences between seals and sea lions: (your observations & class notes) SEALS SEA LIONS FRONT FLIPPERS REAR FLIPPERS NECK EARS Penguin Habitat (Outside/2 nd Floor) (3 pts): 1. What Class do these seabirds fall under? (class notes) 2. Observe the penguins diving and swimming underwater: State the specific body part that they use to move through the water with. 3. List two human impacts that are negatively affecting penguin populations.

5 Northern Pacific Gallery (2 nd Floor) 1. EXTRA CREDIT (2 pts): This is one of Janine s favorite fish. Find this fish in this gallery and state its common name. Read about this fish and observe its behavior and state why you think it has this name? 2. Invertebrates (2 pts): List the two largest invertebrates that you observed in this gallery and state the phylum (class notes) that each falls under. 3. Sea Jellies (4 pts): What phylum do jellyfish fall under? (class notes) Observe a swimming jellyfish and describe how it swims (i.e. What structure do they use and how is it used?) What phylum do comb jellies fall under? (class notes) Observe a swimming comb jelly and describe how it swims. (i.e. What structures do they use and how are they used?)

6 5. Coastal Corner Touch Learning Lab (4 pts): Observe and touch the organisms in this touch tank. State the phylum and common name of two invertebrates in this tank. Then describe one adaptation that each organism has that helps it to successfully live in an intertidal habitat. (class notes). (class notes) How much do sea otters typically eat and what food items do they eat? ( Sea Otter Challenge and Still Threatened display info) Why are predators such as sea otters important to have in a community? ( Sea Otter Challenge, Keystone Species display info, and class notes)

7 Tropical Pacific Gallery 1. Fish Locomotion (4 pts): Observe two different fish species living in this gallery and complete the following: a) State the name of each fish. Use fish I.D. guide in the visitors guide to assist you with fish names. b) State what fins it is mainly using in order to swim or move around with (use diagram below to assist you) c) Describe its habitat. In order to determine habitat, observe where the fish spends most of its time within the tank. Sex Change Exhibit (1 pt): Give the common name of a fish that is a sequential hermaphrodite (use class notes for definition) that you observed in this gallery. 5. EXTRA CREDIT (2 pts): Observe the leafy sea dragons: These are another one of Janine s favorite fish. What type of fish coloration do they exhibit? (Fish colorations are listed at top of this page) Leafy sea dragons look very similar to what other fish that you saw earlier in this gallery? In fact, they are closely related to this fish.
