1 O n the Water TWIN CITIES CHAPTER OF MUSKIES, INC. the Volume 18, Issue 3 MARCH 2015 Chapter s Annual Sportsman s Banquet is March 28 The Twin Cities chapter s annual Sportsman s Banquet is Saturday, March 28 at the Minnesota Valley Country Club in Bloomington. If you purchase one of the bonus packages before March 6, you will qualify for early-bird drawings. Purchase of a platinum bonus qualifies you for drawings for a St. Croix muskie rod and an Abu Garcia NaCl reel. Purchase of a gold bonus qualifies you for the drawing for the reel. To make reservations by mail use the order form from your invitation or in this newsletter. Or purchase on-line at Go to the Banquet tab, click on Make your reservations now and follow the prompts. You will be also able to pay for banquet reservations at the March meetings. Events like this don t just happen. It takes a lot of people a lot of volunteer hours to make this work. The night of the banquet we will need volunteers to make sure things run smoothly. We will have a sign up sheet at the next chapter meetings or contact Eric Bakke at or tcmi.sportsmansbanquet@gmail.com to volunteer a little of your time that night. And, don t forget to invite your friends. This is a fun night out whether a person is into muskie fishing or not. Gracie and Lilly Hartman were the youngest assemblers at our February meeting and they flew through the task. Lure Making Night Surpasses Goals from Tom Keith At our February meeting members of our chapter assembled over 80 bucktails to be used for our youth activities. In addition to the people who had volunteered for the evening, we had more members showing up and offering to help. As a result, Terry Schar, the chapter s Youth Director, has over 60 bucktails to use as prizes for students participating in the regional event for the State High School Muskie Tournament and for the military kids attending the Armed Forces Family Fishing Celebration coming up in June. Additionally, over 20 lures were given to Mike Riha, from the North Metro chapter, to use as prizes for the State High School Muskie Tournament final on Lake Vermilion. It is extremely gratifying te see how people step up and get involved in the activities of our chapter. I want to thank everyone for their involvement. There are actually too many to thank individually, but I need to single out people for sharing their skills and teaching others how to assemble bucktails and make loops on the wires. A special thanks to Don Mears and Paul Hartman for their donation of Flashabou and blades.

2 From Our President Hello to all! As winter winds down and spring arrives, we start to anticipate a new soft water season. We plan and prep, clean reels, sharpen hooks, pick up a few (or many) new things that will improve our chances when we have a chance to get on the water. Until then, we have some events and projects to keep you busy. Our Sportsman s Banquet on March 28 will, once again, be an opportunity to mix and mingle with fellow muskie enthusiasts, to swap some fish stories and to take home some new, one-of-akind lures or a new rod, reel or other equipment for the upcoming year. You will have a great opportunity to book your next fishing adventure at the Northwest Sportshow March We will have a booth at the Sportshow, so make sure to stop by to say hi! We will also have a booth at George s Minnesota Muskies Expo April If you can t make it to the Sportshow, please stop by to say hi! at the Expo. New fishing regulations are now in effect including the 54 length limit for Minnesota. There are also new border water limits with Canada, Wisconsin and North Dakota, make sure you check the regulations for updates before you fish. Hugh C. Becker grants have been announced we received three grants for projects this year. Thanks go to Jim Doyle, John Newman, Tom Keith, and Terry Sharra for their hard work on writing and submitting the grant proposals. Hope to see you at one of the next events, or on the water! ERIC SCHULTZ Summer Fishing League Reformatted from Greg Kappes, Summer Fishing League Chair The chapter s Summer Fishing League has been reformatted for this year to create more interest, inspire participation and add incentive. There will be cash prizes for the top three finishers. Payouts will vary based on the number of members fishing. If twenty people participate in the league this season, payouts would be as follows: 1st place $375, 2nd place $250, and 3rd place $125. There will be ten league events scheduled, mostly Thursday evenings from 5:00 until 9:30 pm and Sundays from 6:00 am until 12:00. You are not required to fish them all but it will be advantageous to do so. Points are cumulative throughout the season. The way to get points is catch a fish. Fish must be over 36 inches to qualify. Scoring is: a fish measuring 36 inches is 6 points, a 37- incher is 7 points and so on. Fish will be measure to the nearest half inch but it must be over. So, a fish measuring 42½ inches would be 12½ points. Fish must be measured on a board, verified with a picture on the board and ed in. A fishing rod, donated by DH Custom Rods, will be awarded for participation in the league. Every Vets Home Opener Greg Kappes, winner of the chapter s Summer Fishing League for last year was presented the league traveling trophy at our February awards meeting. event you fish you will get an entry into the drawing. If you fish all ten events you will get ten tickets in the drawing, if you only fish five events you will get five tickets. To qualify for the cash prizes you will be required to make a $50 donation to the Muskies Inc. stocking program. Your donation must be made prior to fishing a league event or your fish caught cannot be registered. You can donate any time but you will be unable to register fish until your donation is made. League will start with an event on Sunday June 7. The complete schedule will be available in the April newsletter and out website. If you have any question please me at tcmi.fishingleague@gmail.com or call Residents of the Minneapolis Veteran s Home will be treated to a Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 2. Our chapter annually co-sponsors this event with several VFW, American Legion, and AmVets Posts. A large, wellstocked trout pond will be set up and residents of the home can come down to the pond and spend the morning trout fishing. Volunteers help residents catch the fish, clean them, and prepare and serve a shore lunch of fresh-caught trout, potatoes and beans to the veterans. If you don t attend any other chapter event, this one is well worth it. It s extremely rewarding to see our veterans who may never get the chance any other time during the year to come out and get some fishing in.this is one of the best volunteer events at Veterans Homes all over the country and has been recognized as such. Make plans to come out and help. 2 On the Water

3 A Winner of a Muskie Tale At the February meeting Awards night several Muskie Tales were shared. The best tale was voted on and the winner was from John BJ Olson. He will keep the Muskie Tale and turn it over to next years winner. Here is his tale: During the Frank Schneider tournament last fall, I was fishing with my Dad on Leech Lake. We were fishing along the shoreline and were nearing a group of docks. I was in the back of the boat casting away from the boat. I don t always see what s going on up front. But, I heard my Dad shouting I ve got one! I ve got one! I reeled in as fast as I could and went to assist. After several minutes of fighting, the thrashing beast was ready to come in the boat. I reached down trying to grab her with one hand. She violently turned her head and I almost got bit. This monster was going to need both hands. As I finally lifted her into the boat, we realized that she was wrapped up in the line. She gently lay there as I unwrapped the line from around her. Once she was loose, it was time to release this creature. I grabbed her with both hands and threw her into the air as far as I could. And she flew away. That s right, this monster was a seagull that had flown off the boat lift at the exact moment my Dad had cast out. His line had wrapped around the bird s wing and with great finesse he had reeled in the thrashing bird, we landed it, loosened her from the line, and had a successful release! Northwest Sports Show Our chapter will have a booth at the Northwest Sports Show (March 25-29) again this year. The show hours are 1-9 pm Wednesday and Thursday, 11am-9pm Friday, 10am- 9pm Saturday, and 10am- 5pm on Sunday. Volunteers are needed to man our booth. There will be 2 shifts each day. You will be able to get into the show for free on the day(s) you work at the booth. If you can work the booth, please contact Greg Ide at tcmi.speakers@gmail.com or Not Our First Rodeo: Red Wing Lodge and Muskies Inc. George s Minnesota Muskie Expo April 10, 11 and 12 Don t miss George s Minnesota Muskie Expo April at Ganglehoff Center, Concordia University in St. Paul. The Expo was founded nearly 20 years ago by George Wahl, inventor and manufacturer of the Eagle Tail lure. The three-day event is dedicated to muskies and muskie fishing featuring some of the world s top muskie anglers sharing secrets of success in seminars, retailers offering great sale prices, as well as guides and resorts. The unique aspect of the Expo is being able to buy direct from lure manufacturers, getting low prices, custom colors and the newest prototype baits. Fish-A-Thon will sponsor a large Kids Midway area with games and prizes for kids. At George s Tackle Box kids can make their own lures and take home $30 worth of baits. Seminars this year feature John Hoyer and Matt Siefert, Larry Dahlberg, and Luke Ronnestrand on Friday; Bob Mehsikomer, Rich Reinert, Ben Olsen and Gregg Thomas on Saturday; and Bob Benson and Dustin Carlson, Tony Rizzo and Mike Keyes on Sunday. The Expo is open from 2 to 9 pm Friday, from 10 am to 7 pm on Saturday, and on Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Kids 12 and under are free, so bring the whole family. Volunteer at George s Tackle Shop George s Tackle shop is an area in the Muskie Expo where kids are able to create their own muskie lure and take it home with them. Linda, Dave and Jeremy Knutson have manned this for the past few Expos. It s a busy place and they cannot do it alone. If you would be willing to help the kids put together their lures (all instruction provided to you), please contact Paul Hartman at or Dave Knutson at or On the Water

5 Who was Hugh Becker, Anyway? This month grants from the Hugh C. Becker Foundation are announced. Many of you may not be aware of the contribution Hugh Becker has made to Muskies Inc. Hugh C. Becker was born in Olivia in 1917, grew up in Minneapolis and remained a lifelong Minnesota resident. After a stint in World War II he worked until he retired in 1973 as a physical therapist at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Minneapolis. Hugh was also a lifelong fisherman and an avid muskie angler. In 1953 he began his personal fish-tagging program, gathering considerable data on recapture. He shared this data with Dr. Ed Crossman of the Royal Ontario Museum and Art Oehmcke of the Wisconsin DNR. The data demonstrated early on that the practices of catch and release and selective harvest would be valid concepts for muskie conservation. Hugh was instrumental in the early years of Muskies Inc., serving on its Board of Directors for over 15 years. He ran the members-only fishing contest which became the standard for the present day Muskies Inc. Lunge Log. Hugh was he was one of the original inductees into the Muskies Inc., Hall of Fame in In 1976 he personally funded a three-year fish tagging program directed by the Minnesota DNR. This study was the basis for the adoption of the catch and release Muskies Inc. promotes, and also the adoption of utilizing the Leech Lake/Mississippi strain of muskellunge as the brood stock for the Minnesota DNR muskie program. His fishing exploits in the United States and Canada in 66 years produced well over 1,000 muskies. His love of muskies did not stop with his death in Prior to his death he established the Huch C. Becker Foundation for the purposes of promoting Muskies Inc. s tenets of Research, Fisheries, and Youth. Through the foundation, more than $960,000, to date, has been issued in the form of grants, and will continue to be issued in perpetuity.
