13 What are the areas that we fish? Most of our fishing is done within Lobster Fishing Area (LFA) 36 with the exceptions of tuna, scallop, swordfish and shrimp. Those exceptions have their own designated areas that include the Gulf region. St. Mary s is not equipped to fish these species with the exception of scallop. Therefore, thees licenses are often leased out to others for a percentage of the catch. Priority for leasing is given to other First Nation communities.

14 Do we have an inventory of equipment? Yes, St. Mary s Fishery Department keeps an update to date inventory list for fishing vessels as well as the list of department assets. These lists are available for review upon request to the director.

15 What is the hiring process for captains? The hiring process is done by the Fisheries Director and is based on the level of experience at sea as well as a lot of underlying factors. The Captain must be responsible, accountable, reliable, punctual and capable of deploying and retrieving all fishing gear in an appropriate and safe manner. As of 2007, Transport Canada has put fourth some mandatory safety training requirements which will also assist in the hiring process. For every commercial fishing vessel, it is mandatory to have at least one crew member fully trained in Marine Emergency Duties (MED) and Marine Advanced First Aid. In the summer of 2009, in conjunction with NBCC and NSCC Schools of fisheries, safety training was issued to all St Mary s Fisheries employees who weren t already qualified. Prior to this, there was at least one individual per vessel trained and to date all employees have met the proper safety requirements.

16 Who is buying the Lobster and how is the money making its way back to the community? How is this money management taking place? All financial transactions (sales of product) are via cheque. The cheques are mailed in to the band office with all catch receipts, way slips etc. Any lease agreement is received the same way. Monies received are put towards expenses such as crew salaries, fuel, insurance, gear and boat maintenance. Saint Mary s Fisheries Department has a financial person who manages all transactions and is responsible for payroll and paying out expenses.
