4 RESERVE SEAFOOD INTRODUCTION One of the aim s of the the Reserve is to help fishermen achieve top prices for their catch. Provision of infrastructure - chiller units and ice making facilities allows fish to be iced and stored as soon as it is lifted onto the boats. This enables fishermen to supply a range of fish of the highest quality and utilise all their catch. In 2015, BLUE created the 'Reserve Seafood' brand, which markets the sustainable, premium quality, provenance-assured seafood from Lyme Bay at a higher price than previously enjoyed.

5 RESERVE SEAFOOD INTRODUCTION Reserve Seafood is a partnership between BLUE, the Lyme Bay Fisheries and Conservation Reserve and national wholesaler Direct Seafoods. It rewards fishermen s dedication to sustainability and adherence to Reserve management.

6 RESERVE SEAFOOD PROTOCOL To sell through Reserve Seafood fishermen must be; Signed up to the Reserve code of conduct; Transmitting ivms data to prove they are fishing in the Reserve; Accredited to the Seafish Responsible Fishing Scheme; Adhering to monitoring area requirements measuring levels of fishing effort.

7 RESERVE SEAFOOD HOW IT WORKS Prices for fish sold through Reserve Seafood are set on a weekly basis by Direct Seafood against Brixham fish market. Prices are fixed at roughly 10% above the market to ensure fishermen secure a premium. In addition to the 10% fishermen reduce costs and improve quality through the ice, storage and transport provided by the chiller units and Direct Seafoods. The ability for us to be involved in the management measures on the ground has allowed us to see 20% - 30% increases in income from our improved catches. - Axmouth Fisherman Angus Walker, 2016

11 RESERVE SEAFOOD CATCH Valuable catch data can contribute to our understanding of the marine environment. 29 species of seafood were sold through Reserve Seafood in The ability to make use of all species caught has meant more varied types of fish are being recorded in the Reserve. Species such as bass, cuttlefish and turbot have low populations on a national level. The rise in the frequency of landings may be an indication that healthy local populations are returning for some species. A fishers recording app is currently in development. ivms data records fishing activities from inside the reserve and is used to validate Reserve Seafood landings
