The Aztec lineup features a blend of experience and youth, with Chaves and Lacey making their fourth consecutive appearances in regional competition for the Scarlet and Black, joining first-time participants Krause, Carpinelli and Kjellker. Lacey (T-45th, +9) and Chaves (69th, +14) are the lone returners from last season's regional squad, with SDSU landing in the 11th spot out of 18 schools in Lubbock, Texas. Carpinelli is the sole Aztec to compete in all 10 medal-play events for the Aztecs this season, posting a scoring average, which ranks third behind Kjellker (75.28) and Chaves (75.68). All five SDSU starters remain within one shot of each other for this year's stroke averages, including Krause (76.26) and Lacey (76.28). SDSU At NCAA Regionals The Aztecs will embark on their fifth straight trip to NCAA regionals and 11th overall as a team. SDSU earned team bids in 1999 (19th), 2001 (15th), 2004 (15th), 2010 (t-15th), 2011 (17th), 2012 (t-20th), 2014 (t-21st), 2015 (11th), 2016 (12th) and 2017 (11th). The program was also represented by individual golfers in 1996, 1997, 2000 and This week marks the seventh time the Aztecs are participating in a western-based regional as a team, following the 1999, 2004, 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016 squads. SDSU has twice competed in the Bay Area for regional play at Stanford Golf Course, finishing 15th out of 21 schools in 2004 to go along with a 12th-place standing out of 18 squads in Including this season, SDSU will have played in 14 different cities and 10 different states in its NCAA regional history. Of those squads, seven reside in the top 30, including No. 1 UCLA, followed by Stanford (5), South Carolina (9), Kent State (16), Oklahoma State (18), North Carolina (24) and Colorado (26). The Aztecs own a record in head-to-head results against 10 of their 17 regional foes during the campaign, maintaining the upper hand against Pepperdine (3-1), California (3-1) and Grand Canyon (1-0) while splitting four encounters vs. Colorado (2-2). A Look At The Course The host site of the 2018 NCAA San Francisco Regional is the par-72, 6,369-yard TPC Harding Park Golf Course, which opened on July 18, 1925 on a gently rolling peninsula along the shores of Lake Merced in San Francisco's southwest corner. The initial 18-hole, 163-acre layout was designed by Willie Watson and Sam Whiting, who also designed the nearby Olympic Club Lake Course. By the 1940s, Harding Park established itself as one of the top golf courses on the West Coast, where it became a regular stop for PGA Tour events up until the end of the decade, when budgetary cuts caused the course to fall into poor conditions. The course further deteriorated, reaching its lowest point in 1998, when it was used as a parking lot during the U.S. Open at Olympic Club. In an effort to restore Harding Park to its former glory, Frank "Sandy" Tatum, a respected lawyer, accomplished golfer and former USGA President, rallied together local businesses and political leaders, the USGA, the San Francisco Recreation and Parks, and the PGA Tour's Tim Finchem. Combined efforts resulted in a $16 million restoration in featuring a complete re-design to the course. The result was a highly acclaimed championship course that maintains the character and integrity of the original layout, but incorporates design elements and infrastructure to accommodate today's players. Harding Park Golf Course officially reopened on August 22, 2003, culminating its remarkable rebound with its addition to the PGA Tour's prestigious TPC Network of clubs in November Since itsrenovations, TPC Harding Park is championship-worthy once again, hosting several PGA Tour events such as the 2005 WGC-American Express Championship, the 2009 President's Cup, the Charles Schwab Cup (2010, 2011, 2013) and the 2015 WGC-Cadillac Match Play. Harding Park is also scheduled to host the 2020 PGA Championship and the 2025 President's Cup. Harding Park is lined with towering Monterey Cypress trees and

There are four sets of tees that challenge every golfer from beginner to the most skilled player. Backspin: 2017 Lubbock Regional San Diego State saw its season come to a disappointing conclusion after finishing in 11th place at the 2017 NCAA Lubbock Regional. The Aztecs fired a collective 10-over-par 298 during the final round for a 54-hole total of 892 (+28) on the par-72, 6,593-yard Rawls Course. SDSU entered the day in eighth place, just two shots out of the coveted sixth position, as the top six teams and three low individuals not on those squads advance out of regional competition into the NCAA championship series. Despite a combined six birdies on their first four holes, however, the Aztecs were plagued by inconsistency for most of the round, slipping an three additional spots in the standings to finish 17 shots behind sixth-place Kent State (+11) for the regional s final berth in the NCAA Championships. Individually, SDSU was led by senior Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), who set a program record for lowest 54-hole score at a regional event with a 2-over 218 on the strength of a final-round 71, the Aztecs lone red figure of the tournament. The four-time all-mountain West performer sank three birdies on the day and added a team-high 13 pars to tie for 17th on the leaderboard. With her effort, Blair also became San Diego State s third-highest finisher in a regional tournament behind Heather MacRae (10th, 2004) and Malin Enarsson (12th, 2010). In addition, junior Georgia Lacey and freshman Fernanda Escauriza finished seven strokes behind Blair in a tie for 45th at 9-over 225 after each fired a 76 on Wednesday. Lacey notched a team-high four birdies, including a successful drain on the par yard No. 14, which ranked as the third-toughest hole of the tournament. However, a triple-bogey on the No. 1 green foreshadowed an erratic day for the Torrey Pines High product, who suffered three additional bogeys, as well as a double on the par-3 16th, to tumble 17 places in the standings. Meanwhile, Escauriza experienced an identical drop after recording just one birdie on the par-3 No. 3 as five bogeys hastened her fall. Despite trimming four strokes off her total from the previous day, Natalie Vivaldi also lost ground on the leaderboard, plunging 14 places into a tie for 63rd at 12-over 228 after posting a final-round 75. The SDSU senior finished strong with eight pars against one bogey after the turn, but an uneven front nine featuring two bogeys and a double at the par-4 No. 5 proved too much to overcome. The Aztec contingent also included Mila Chaves, who finished 69th at 14-over 230 after posting a 78 on Wednesday. Aztec junior was beset by seven bogeys, including two straight to begin her round, while draining just one birdie on the par-4, 383-yard No. 13. Boasting the three top individual performers, Arizona State (-22) easily captured the team title at the Lubbock Regional, while Furman (-1) was a distant second, followed by Oregon (+3), Texas (+5), Texas Tech (+9) and Kent State (+11). The Sun Devils Monica Vaughn (-8) took home medalist honors after edging teammates Olivia Mehaffey (-7) and Linnea Strom (-6). Mehaffey completed the low round of the tournament with a 66 on Wednesday. The 95-golfer field posted an average score of in the final round, marking a decrease of nearly two strokes from round two. Kjellker, Chaves Earn All-MW Honors San Diego State's Sara Kjellker and Mila Chaves each landed a spot on the all-mountain West Women's Golf team, as announced Friday by the league office. Kjellker was a first-team choice, while Chaves received second-team recognition in a vote of the conference's nine head coaches. With their honors, the Aztecs have garnered multiple all-mw selections in eight consecutive seasons. Kjellker has made a tremendous impact in her rookie campaign, leading the team with a scoring average to go with four top- 10 finishes. The native Swede has recorded five rounds at or below par and ranks fourth in the league in head-to-head individual metrics. Kjellker was the Scarlet and Black's top finisher in five events this season, highlighted by a third-place performance in the strokeplay phase of the SDSU March Mayhem at The Farms Golf Club. She also collected a pair of MW Player of the Week awards following a seventh-place effort at the Bruin Wave Invitational in late February and an eighth-place showing earlier this month at the Bruzzy Challenge. Last fall, Kjellker tied for sixth at the highly competitive Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, carding a season-best 2-over-par 218 in a field where only three golfers broke par for the tournament. Chaves, meanwhile, is coming off a medal-winning performance at the MW Championship on April 18 in Rancho Mirage, Calif., where she fired a 3-under 213 to give the Aztecs their second consecutive individual champion at the conference tournament. A native of Paraguay, Chaves tops the squad with eight rounds at or below par, highlighted by a season-best 69 on the second day of the MW Championship, and ranks second on the team behind Kjellker with a stroke average. She currently occupies the seventh spot individually in head-to-head league competition. In addition to her MW tournament victory, Chaves was the team's top finisher at the aptly named Windy City Collegiate Classic last October and was the squad's No. 2 placer in three additional events. and Black to its aforementioned team title. Rewind: Chaves Medals at MW Championship San Diego State's Mila Chaves claimed the individual title at the 2018 Mountain West Championship after shooting an even-par 72 during the final round at Mission Hills Country Club. With her total, Chaves completed the event with a 54-hole total of 3-under 213 to give the Aztecs their second straight medalist at the conference tournament after fellow compatriot Fernanda Escauriza accomplished the feat last year. "I don't know what it is about this place, but Mila and Fernanda absolutely love this course," said San Diego State head coach Leslie Spalding. "I am so proud of Mila's performance. Watching her play for us is just so much fun. She loves these greens and can see the putts very well, which really contributed to her win today." As a team, SDSU landed in the runner-up position behind UNLV for the third consecutive year after logging a collective 2-over 290 during the final round on the par-72, 6,270-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course. Despite posting their lowest team score of the week, the Aztecs were unable to significantly narrow the gap against the Rebels (+8), who won by eight shots. With its result, SDSU finished with a combined 16-over 880, while Colorado State (+31) was a distant third, followed by New Mila Chaves became the Aztecs' second straight medalist at the Mountain West Championship last month after firing a collective 3-under 213 to win by one shot over UNLV's Mackenzie Raim.

3 SAN DIEGO STATE WOMEn'S GOLF NoTES PAGE 3 Mexico (+38) and Nevada (+39). Chaves, who lost a one-hole playoff at the MW Championship as a freshman in 2015, avenged her earlier disappointment with a steady performance on Wednesday, edging UNLV's Mackenzie Raim (-2) by one shot for her first collegiate victory. The two players were all even after Chaves made bogey on the par-5, 494-yard No. 11. However, the Aztec senior jumped in front to stay on the very next green, draining a birdie on the par-4, 375-yard No. 12, which ranked as the third-toughest hole of the week, while her Rebel adversary made par. Chaves increased her lead to two strokes in the de facto match after notching a par-4 at No. 15, while Raim suffered a bogey. The reigning South American Women's Amateur champion finished with three additional pars over her final three holes, holding off her UNLV challenger, who carded a birdie on the par-3, 145-yard 17th, but could draw no closer. With average individual scores increasing for the third day in row up to 76.84, Chaves became the lone golfer in the field of 45 players to complete all three rounds at or below par. She totaled three birdies on the day at No. 2 and No. 4, offsetting a potentially damaging double bogey-6 on the third green. Two other SDSU competitors made significant gains on the leaderboard to finish in the top 10, as Georgia Lacey vaulted eight spots into a tie for sixth at 3-over 219, while sophomore Fernanda Escauriza ended in a tie for eighth at 4-over 220. Lacey recorded a final-round 71, sinking four birdies to counter a double bogey-6 at No. 10 and another bogey on the aforementioned 12th en route to her highest placement at the MW Championship. On the other hand, Escauriza carded the low round of the tournament with a career-best 68 over the final 18 holes, posting four birdies, including an impressive drain on the par-4, 402-yard No. 3, which ranked as the toughest hole of the week. Conversely, Gioia Carpinelli was unable to avoid a drop of five places, but still finished alone in 20th at 12-over 228 after shooting a 79. The day started ominously for the Aztec freshman, who opened with a double bogey followed by two additional blemishes at No. 4 and No. 8. Carpinelli tried to regroup with a birdie on the ninth green followed by four consecutive pars. However, two bogeys and another double on her final five holes derailed her momentum. Elsewhere, Sara Kjellker completed her first MW Championship in a tie for 35th at 20-over 236 following an uncharacteristic 80. The SDSU freshman experienced a dearth of birdies and was unable to overcome the sting of six bogeys and a double Highlights Despite the loss of four-time all-mw honoree Sirene Blair and facing a schedule replete with high-level competition, San Diego State enjoyed another successful season in , posting top-10 team finishes in seven of nine stroke-play events, including a pair of fourth-place performances at the Bruin Wave Invitational and Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational. The Aztecs opened the season last September at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., where Gioia Carpinelli, Sara Kjellker and Georgia Lacey all tied for 25th, helping the Scarlet and Black finish fifth in the team standings. SDSU came up short in its quest for three-peat at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colo, settling for a fifth-place tie, while Lacey tied for 17th on the individual leaderboard at 3-over 219. The Aztecs faced some robust competition in their next two events, tying for 12th at Northwestern University s Windy City Collegiate Classic, just outside of Chicago, Ill., before landing in the ninth spot at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. Kjellker held her own in the latter tournament, tying for sixth at 2-over 218 for her first top-10 finish in a Scarlet and Black uniform. SDSU wrapped up its fall slate with four individuals competing at the UC Irvine Invitational, as Fernanda Escauriza tied for sixth at 2-over 218, while Daniela Anastasi posted her first top-20 placement as an Aztec, tying for 14th at 6-over 222. During the winter break, Chaves won the South American Women s Amateur Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she carded a collective 6-under 282 to edge Colombia s Silvia Garces (-5) by one stroke, chipping in for a birdie-3 on the final hole of the tournament to erase a two-shot deficit. For the second year in a row, SDSU opened its second semester schedule in early February at Ohio State s Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., finishing 18th in an almost-exclusive field that featured 13 top-30 squads. Two Aztecs received Mountain West Women s Golfer of the Week honors for their efforts in SDSU s next two tournaments. Kjellker tied for seventh at the Bruin Wave Invitational, topping seven players ranked in the Golfstat top 80. As a team, the Aztecs were the only non- Pac-12 member to finish in the top six, landing in the fourth position. Two weeks later, Carpinelli collected the conference s weekly award after tying for second with an even-par 216 at the Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, helping the Scarlet and Black to a fourth-place standing. Shortly thereafter, the Aztecs returned stateside to conduct their sixth annual home tournament, the SDSU March Mayhem, which featured a match-play sequence for the fourth year in a row, following an opening round of stroke play. All 12 schools in the competitive field were ranked among the Golfstat top 60 entering the week, as San Diego State finished sixth with a 1-2 ledger, dropping matches to Texas and UCLA, sandwiched around a victory over Colorado. Individually, Kjellker tied for third in the stroke play; Chaves and Carpinelli posted 2-1 records in their respective matches, while Lacey went Kjellker collected her second MW Women s Golfer of the Week award after tying for eighth at Sara Kjellker The Bruzzy Challenge outside of Dallas, Texas. Playing in chilly and windy conditions, Kjellker shot a 10-over 226 in tournament where none of the 80 participants finished below par. At San Diego State s annual scholar-athlete banquet on April 11, the Aztec women s golf program was presented with the award for highest team grade point average for the 2017 fall semester. Chaves also received the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award, recognizing her work in the classroom and in community service. Last fall, head coach Leslie Spalding fortified the team's roster with the signing of local prep standout April Ranches to a National Letter of Intent. A senior at Serra High School in SanDiego, Ranches was a two-time all-cif competitor and a 2016 Esmark HIgh School All-American. Just A Chip Shot Away The top six teams and the three highest finishing individuals not on one of those squads will advance out of the NCAA San Francisco Regional to the national championships, slated for May in Stillwater, Okla. A total of 24 teams and 12 individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play over a three-day span at Karsten Creek Golf Course, with the top 15 squads and nine highest placing individuals advancing to a fourth round of stroke play, which will determine the top eight schools for match play competition, as well as the 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 8 seed, the No. 2 seed playing the No. 7 seed, the No. 3 seed playing the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed playing the No. 5 seed in match play. SDSU has previously sent an individual to the NCAA national tournament, but has never qualified as a team. Head Coach Leslie Spalding Leslie Spalding, who was hired in August 2011, is in her seventh season as head coach of the Aztecs. Since her arrival on Montezuma Mesa, Spalding has guided SDSU to nine team tournament titles, including the 2015 Mountain West Championship, which marked the team s first-ever conference crown. For her efforts, the Billings, Mont., native was named MW Women s Golf Coach of the Year. During her tenure, Spalding s players have garnered 18 all-conference accolades, including Emma Henrikson, who became the team s first-ever All-American after receiving honorable mention in In addition, Spalding s charges have excelled in the classroom, earning 19 all-academic honors from the MW to go with nine scholar-athlete certificates. Spalding played on the LPGA Tour from 1996 to 2005, competing in 215 events with seven top-10 finishes while earning more than $600,000 in prize money. After completing her playing career, she served as the head women s golf coach at Montana State from As a collegian, Spalding attended the University of Alabama on a golf scholarship from 1987 to 1991 and received her bachelor s degree in telecommunication/film with a minor in marketing in 1992.
