Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association Dec 2017 Message from Mike Koen Communication Director After three years of sending out the Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Newsletter this will be my final one. I ve thoroughly enjoyed creating a monthly newsletter that combined information about current events in our golf community along with golf tips that I lifted from various magazines along with some humor to lighten up when we get too serious. I would like to thank Mark Klicker, Rob Nemecek, Steve Ordahl, Tim McCauley, Steve Thomson, Bob Christianson, George Kramer, Mike White, Sam Rossi, Dave Bott, Bruce Deverman, Pat Larkey, Doug Strueber, Frank Scianella and Ted Weirman who contributed articles to the newsletter. Jeff Silver and Tom Graham will be taking over for me and I encourage everyone to submit articles, human interest stories and significant golf events such as holes-in-one and similar notable achievements. During the three years that I have had the opportunity to express my observations about the golf community at Saddlebrooke Ranch I would like to repeat one fact that is undeniably true. Over and over again I have played with guys with all skill levels. Almost to the man I have found nothing but support, encouragement and friendship whether we are playing a scramble, a match play or some other team event. I 2
Saddlebrooke Ranch Men s Golf Association Dec 2017 think all the guys who are members of the Saddlebrooke Ranch Golf Association should be proud of themselves over the way that they have conducted themselves. One of the reasons that I enjoy living at the Ranch is based upon the friendships that I have made through this golf association. I think this golf association has achieved that right balance between taking the game seriously without it interfering with good fellowship. Since this will be one of the last opportunity's that I will have to express myself in the newsletter, I d like to comment on a few things. I wish the board would reconsider a few decisions that they have made though the years. I believe that there should be a tournament handicap that is based on scores shot only during tournament play. I believe that is the only way to establish a true handicap. I personally think that the Ranch course is not accurately rated and it eliminates the problem of golfers establishing their handicaps based upon play at other, much more difficult courses. It also eliminates the problem of other golfers turning in questionable scores during non tournament play. Having a tournament only handicap eliminates once and for all the issue of people grumbling about golfers turning in remarkably low net scores. Perhaps this idea creates an undo burden on the handicap chairman. If that is the case perhaps 3
Saddlebrooke Men s Golf Association Dec 2017 people with excellent software skills could step up and help out. I believe the board should also reconsider their decision about all golfers playing from the blended tees during tournament play. A proposal has been floating around is that if a player s age plus his handicap exceeds a certain number, perhaps 100, he should be allowed to pick his tees. Right now I m guessing that there s only a few players in that category but down the road, perhaps even 5 years from now this is going to loom as a larger issue. Again thanks a lot to everyone who has helped me publish the newsletter. MIKE MOST IMPROVED PLAYER Annual awards are given to the most improved player in each of the four flights. Additionally there s an award given to the most improved overall. The most improved overall is Karl Knight. Congratulations to all of you and keep up the good work in Flight A Ron Noble Flight B Sam Rossi Flight C Karl Knight Flight D Steve Kovach 4
Saddlebrooke Ranch Men s Golf Association Dec 2017 GREAT SHOTS DURING THE YEAR This year has been notable, as a handful of guys have scored holes-in-one, at least one eagle and one golfer even had a rare albatross. There are probably a few other outstanding shots that have not been reported. Feb Guy Shelton double eagle on hole 1 April Bruce Crawford hole-in-one on hole 5 June Ken Cook hole-in-one on hole 5 June Bob Christianson hole-in-one on hole 12 Aug Bruce Deverman hole-in-one on hole 5 Nov Mike Koen eagle on hole 16 PIMA CUP RESULTS Our guys struggled on the difficult LaPaloma course under overcast and at times rainy conditions. Hopefully we ll do better during the future matches. 5

This money is a form of advertising on the part of the sponsors who believe that the membership of our MGA will patronize their establishments and consider using their services. Whenever you can try to show our appreciation by considering using their services whenever you can 9
