2 General Info All boys teams, all classifications consist of six(6) players counting the four(4) best scores Girls teams A,AA teams consist of four(4) players counting two(2) best scores AAA-AAAAAA teams consist of four(4) players counting three(3) best scores If school has no girls team, boys team may have one(1) female player must play by boys rules Range finders and GPS devices now legal Cell phones, wristwatches with GPS not permitted All other electronic devices not permitted, except for emergencies General Info-Continued Coaches are not permitted to use electronic devices to receive or pass along information to players 12 playing dates; 9-hole competitions before April 1 count as ½ playing date Split squads are permitted; however will count as two of schools allowed competitions Region/Area Low medalist in Region/Area advances to State Tournament Low Score Individual (boy/girl) must meet score criteria to advance to Sectional Boys 85, Girls 100 Region playing distances: Boys 6200 yards, Girls 5100 yards Sectionals Be sure you understand advancement criteria. Scenarios described on p. 74 of Constitution Qualifying scores for 2014 Class 5A,6A: Boys 330, Girls 300 Class 3A,4A: Boys 340, Girls 320 Class 2A: Boys 350, Girls 200 (2 scores) Class A Area Champions advance to State Tournament Second, Third, Fourth advance to Sectionals All classification will have full sectional tournaments. 3 State Tournament Details of State Tournaments will be sent to all qualifying schools at conclusion of the Sectionals USGA Rule Water Hazards (Rule 26-1) Defined by yellow stakes and/or lines. If any part of the ball is touching the yellow line it is considered to be in the water hazard. Stakes defining a water hazard are considered obstructions and may be moved and replaced If a ball in play is found in a water hazard or is virtually certain that it was struck into a water hazard, then a player has three (3) options by the rules of golf. A fourth option would be a drop area deemed appropriate by the tournament committee which must be stated on the player s rule sheet. A player may play the ball from the hazard provided that he/she doesn t ground his/her club in the hazard or touch/remove any loose impediments in the hazard. This includes practice swings Under a penalty of one stroke, proceed under Rule 27-1 (the stroke and distance provision). He/she may go back to where the previous stroke was played and drop a ball in play Under a penalty of one stroke, drop a ball behindthe water hazard keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard. He/she may take that point and the flagstick and move backwards with no limit and then drop. USGA Rule Lateral Hazards (Rule 26-1) Defined by red stakes and/or lines. If any part of the ball is touching the red line it is considered to be in the hazard. Stakes defining a lateral hazard are considered obstructions and may be moved and replaced. Relief options from a lateral hazard (red stakes) include the same 3 options for a water hazard (yellow stakes) plus two (2) additional options. A player may drop a ball outside of the later hazard within two club lengths and no closer to the hole from the point where the ball last entered the hazard A player may proceed as above from a point on the opposite side of the lateral hazard that is equidistant to the flagstick. USGA Rule Out of Bounds/Lost Ball Defined by white stakes or lines. The inside part of the stakes are used as the boundary and painted white lines are considered out of bounds. For a ball to be out of bounds, it must be completely out of bounds. If a ball is virtually certain to have been struck out of bounds, then the player must drop a ball (or re-tee if on the teeing ground) as near as possible to the shot last played under a penalty on one stroke and distance A player may play a provisional ball if it is not certain that it was struck out of bounds. The player must declare his intentions before hitting the provisional ball. If not, it must be played as if the original ball is out of bounds. A player may play the provisional ball without penalty until he comes up to where the original ball is thought to have rested. If the player continues to play the provisional ball nearer the hole than where the original ball is though to be, then the provisional becomes the ball in play under penalty of one stroke and distance. Once a player begins his search for whether or not the original ball is out of bounds, he is only allowed 5 minutes. If this time expires, the ball is deemed to be lost or out of bounds and the provisional ball becomes the ball in play. The rules for a lost ball are basically the same as for out of bounds 3

4 USGA Rule - Obstructions An obstruction is anything artificial including cart paths except for fences, stakes, and walls that define out of bounds. An obstruction is a movable obstruction if it can be moved without unreasonable effort, otherwise it is an immovable obstruction. A player may take relief, without penalty, from a movable obstruction by either removing the obstruction. If the ball lies in or on the obstruction it may be lifted, cleaned and placed as near as possible to the spot it lied when in the obstruction. A player may take relief, without penalty, from an immovable obstruction by finding the nearest point of relief from the obstruction and then dropping it within one club length. The ball may be cleaned under this process. USGA Rule Unplayable Ball If a player deems a ball to be unplayable he has three (3) options: He/she may opt to play a ball from the spot where the previous shot was played under penalty of one stroke (stroke and distance) He/she may take the point where the ball currently lies and drop a ball on a line with the flag stick no closer to the hole and with no limit on how far back under penalty of one stroke Take two-club lengths relief from where the ball lays no closer to the hole under penalty of one stoke USGA Rule Provisional Ball A provisional ball played under rule 27-2 for a ball that may be lost outside of a water hazard or out of bound. In order to save time, a player may declare a provisional ball in the case that it may be lost outside of a water hazard or out of bounds. If the player does not state his intentions before playing another ball then the original ball is out of play and he/she will incur a penalty of one stroke and distance. The second ball becomes the ball in play. USGA Rule Abnormal Ground Conditions (Casual Water, Ground Under Repair) Interference is defined by if the ball lies in the abnormal condition or when the abnormal condition interferes with the player s stance of the area of his intended swing. Relief must be taken at the nearest point that gives complete relief from the condition. The player may drop the ball within one club length of that spot with no penalty. If the ball lies on the putting green only, an abnormal ground condition could also be interference with the line of the putt. Relief is only the nearest point that provides complete relief from the condition and may not end up being on the putting green. 4

5 Signing for Score/Scorecards After each hole the marker should check the score with the competitor and record it. On completion of the round the marker will sign the scorecard and return it to the competitor. After the completion of the round, the competitor should check his/her score for each hole and settle any doubtful points with the Committee. After ensuring that the scorecard is correct, the competitor must sign it and turn it in to the Committee as soon as possible. No alteration may be made to the scorecard one it is turned into the Committee. Wrong score for a hole if a player returns a card with a score on a hole lower than actually taken, then he/she is disqualified. If a player returns a card with a score higher than the actual score taken, then the higher score as returned stands. Thank you for your participation! 5
