1 Newsletter NOVEMBER / DECEMBER Tournament Season Concludes Ross Robinson Scores Double by Winning Gross in Pinehurst Scotch and Greenskeeper s Revenge Ross Robinson proves that persistence pays off as he claimed victory in the final two events of the tournament season. A perennial fixture in SRGC tournaments, Robinson had failed to cash, or should I say shop credit, in a single 2010 event until he and partner Carroll Carter combined for a 5 under par 67 to claim victory in the Pinehurst Scotch event October 30th. Robinson came back strong on November 13th to take the gross title in the Greenskeeper s Revenge for the third straight time. Robinson won the 2007 and 2008 events prior to this year. The event was not played in Robinson was the only player in the field to break 90 on a day that saw many players succumb to some truly diabolical pin placements. The pin on the eighteenth hole spoiled many a round with the clubhouse in sight. Pinehurst Scotch Gross Champions: (L) Carroll Carter and (R) Ross Robinson. Pinehurst Scotch Net Champions: (L) Chad Mitchell and (R) Chris Warfield. The 2010 SRGC tournament season concluded with several impressive highlights and first time winners. Howard Pope won the two-day Governor s Cup tournament in June by ten shots. He posted an 81, net 59 on day one and followed it up with a net 71 on day two. Matt Murphy, seeded fifth in the championship flight, defeated two-time club champion and number 1 seed, Lee Fields, in the semifinals of the Club Championship. He then defeated the qualifier champion and number 2 seed, Chris Warfield, in the 36-hole finals to claim his first SRGC Club Championship. Chris Warfield teamed up with former SRGC member Jason Dunn to win the 2010 Member Guest with the lone birdie recorded in the shootout. Warfield s approach to 4 1/2 feet and subsequent birdie putt was enough to secure the victory after no other team was able to match them. Finally, the SRGC Ryder Cup team won the Cup for the fourth straight year and the sixth time in the nine-year history of the event. Access to tournament golf is a valuable benefit of being a South Riding Golf Club member. Spirited competition among the members builds friendships and provides a chance to test their golf games. With a variety of formats, there is a tournament for every member to play. We look forward to seeing you competing in a 2011 event. The first event will be held in early April. Sign up early!

Each partner plays from the teeing ground, but plays the partner s ball for the second shot. After the second shots, partners select the ball with which they wish to score and play that ball alternately to complete the hole. The team handicap is calculated by combining 60% of the lower player handicap and 40% of the higher player handicap. The total is rounded with fractions of.5 or greater rounded up to the next higher number. Did You Know??? Playing with his regular group of weekday competitors, with their regular wagers riding, Dick Bradley shot his career low round on October 18th and took a few bucks in the process. Dick made the turn two over par before running off a string of four straight birdies on ten through thirteen. He added a birdie on seventeen and somehow held it together with a par on eighteen to break 70 for the first time. Nobody knows exactly how old Mr. Bradley is so we don t know how close his score of 69 came to shooting his age. In case anyone doubts that the score was posted, I can attest that it was. I took care of that little task myself! Congratulations, Dick. Members Chris Warfield and Lee Fields won the 1st Annual Pig Skin Challenge at SRGC on October 16th. The event featured a 2-man scramble format with stableford scoring. Each team dressed in the team colors of their favorite NFL or college football team. Chris and Lee accumulated 53 stableford points over the 18 holes, including eagles on the 10th and 17th holes. Their nearest competitor totaled 40 points. It s a good thing that there weren t any teams wearing Eagles gear. Fifty-three points may not have been enough! 3 CHRIS WARFIELD The Old Farts Doug Ball Dick Bradley Lee Fields Bob Gardiner Rusty Harper Andy MacLean Bob Murphy Ross Robinson The Young Bucks Dave Ambrose Chris Arbore Phil McQuitty Chad Mitchell Matt Murphy Chris Ross Dave Smith Chris Warfield This all got started the way a lot of things start amongst guys. A group of senior players from South Riding had won a senior event at Evergreen CC earlier this fall. Lee Fields was relating the details of the matches to Dave Ambrose, who began talking a little trash about the senior players. Soon the trash was flowing pretty good in both directions. The result was a challenge; a match was proposed between the senior players (over 50 years old) and a group of young players to settle the score. Thus began the Old Farts vs. Young Bucks matches. On a cold and windy Sunday morning in early November, eight Old Fart members of the Club, led by Lee Fields, took up the challenge from eight Young Buck members, led by Dave Ambrose. The matches consisted of two-man teams playing match play. Each team match was worth three points and consisted of 18-holes, with a front nine match of better ball, a back nine match of modified alternate shot. and an eighteen hole match. The first match, Doug Ball / Dick Bradley vs. Chris Arbore / Dave Smith, was won by the Young Bucks. Chris and Dave played extremely well on the front nine individually, and even better on the back nine as a team. They won their match handily and put the Young Bucks into an early lead. The second match, Rusty Harper / Andy MacLean vs. Matt Murphy / Chris Ross was close throughout. Matt and Chris won the front nine one up. The duo found themselves down early on the back nine before battling back to tie the back nine and win the overall one up. Although Chris and Matt scored 2.5 points for the Young Bucks team, this was a very competitive match all the way through. The third match, Bob Murphy / Bob Gardiner vs. Chad Mitchell / Chris Warfield remained close throughout. Chad and Chris fought off an early deficit to win the front nine one up and take that lead into modified alternate shot. On the back nine, the experience of the Old Farts took over. Hitting their drives next to each other all day made the alternate shot a breeze for them as they played steady throughout. With putts falling and iron shots pelting pins, Bob and Bob won the back nine two up to capture two points for the Old Farts team. The heavily anticipated final match of the day would settle all the trash talking. The Lee Fields / Ross Robinson vs. Dave Ambrose / Phil McQuitty match lived up to the hype. Neither team ever led by more than one hole throughout the match. The back and forth front nine better ball match ended in a draw. The back nine was more of the same with neither team leading by more than one hole. The outcome of this match was not decided until the final putt on the eighteenth green. With all their matches tied, Dave Ambrose holed a 25-foot putt from off the green for birdie to win the back nine and the overall to earn 2.5 points for the Young Bucks. Although the final score appears to be extremely lopsided, these were hard fought and competitive matches throughout. Congratulations to all players involved, and thanks to Lee Fields and Dave Ambrose for organizing the event. Additionally, we would like to thank Willy Lutz for allowing us to have this Non-Sanctioned event at the Club, and to Joshua of the Food and Beverage staff for cooking the wings for our post event gathering. Of course, the Old Farts are looking for a rematch next year. The Golf Committee is considering adding a 2011 challenge to the golf program.
