The Aztecs, who are making their fifth regional appearance in the last six years and 12th overall, will be among the field vying for a spot in the NCAA national championship series, scheduled for May in Bradenton, Fla. SDSU garnered the seventh seed out of 18 teams in the St. George Regional, earning one of 29 automatic bids to the NCAA tournament after winning its first-ever Mountain West title on April 22. A total of 72 NCAA Division I schools received invitations to play in one of four regionals that will be held concurrently this week in South Bend, Ind. (Notre Dame), San Antonio, Texas (UTSA), Raleigh, N.C. (North Carolina State) and St George, Utah (BYU). Joining the Aztecs this week will be 17 other teams, including 12 opponents ranked in the top 50, along with six individual competitors (96 golfers overall). The top six squads and the three highest finishing individuals not on an advancing team will move on to nationals from each of the four regionals. Teams will complete 18 holes (54 total) of stroke play each of the three days following a practice round on Wednesday, May 6. SDSU will be paired with Miami (Fla.) and Colorado for Thursday s opening round, which is set to get underway from the first tee at 8 a.m. MT, while Friday s second round also starts as early as 8 a.m. The competition then wraps up on Saturday, with final-round action slated to begin with another 8 a.m. tee time. Rounds Emma Henrikson Mila Chaves Sirene Blair Georgia Lacey Paige Spiranac Aztec Lineup For This Week Fourth-year San Diego State head coach Leslie Spalding will accompany five golfers to Utah s Dixie this week, featuring junior Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden), freshman Mila Chaves (Asunción, Paraguay), sophomore Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), freshman Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) and senior Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.). Henrikson and Spiranac will be making their third consecutive appearances in regional competition, while Blair finds herself in the thick of the fight for the second straight year, joining first-time participants Chaves and Lacey. Henrikson, who owns a team-best stroke average for the season, is ranked 60th nationally in the latest Golfstat Cup standings, while Chaves (73.83) enters the tournament at No. 90. SDSU At NCAA Regionals The Aztecs are making their fifth trip to NCAA regionals in the last six years and eighth overall as a team. SDSU earned team bids in 1999 (18th), 2001 (15th), 2004 (15th), 2010 (t-15th), 2011 (17th), 2012 (t-20th) and 2014 (t-21st). The program has also been represented by individual golfers in 1996, 1997, 2000 and This week marks the fifth time the Aztecs are participating in a western-based regional as a team, following the 1999, 2004, 2011 and 2014 squads. The Scarlet and Black also competed in the East Regional on two occasions in 2001 and 2012 to go along with an appearance at the Central Regional in Including this season, the program will have played in 12 different cities and 10 different states in its NCAA regional history. Heather MacRae boasts SDSU s best individual finish when she tied for 11th place in 2004; Malin Enarsson is second with her 12thplace performance in 2010, while Hiroko Fukushima sits in third with an 18th-place effort in In addition, Paige Spiranac tied for the 19th spot in 2013, while Gina Clark cracked the top 30 in 2012, finishing in a tie for the 29th position. The Competition The Aztecs are one of 17 teams in the St. George Regional field that are ranked among the top 50 in the latest Golfstat rankings released May 4. Of those squads, seven occupy the top 25, including No. 1 USC, followed by Arkansas (8), Virginia (9), Stanford (16), Vanderbilt (17), UNLV (22) and SDSU (25). The Aztecs own a record in head-to-head results against 10 of their regional foes during the campaign, including unblemished marks vs. California (3-0), Colorado (2-0), Denver (1-0) and New St. George Regional 5/4 4/26 SDSU Record Team Rankings Golfstat Golfweek vs. In San Diego State (14-10) USC Arkansas Virginia Stanford Vanderbilt UNLV Miami (Fla.) Colorado California SMU TCU Denver Wisconsin Middle Tennesse State New Mexico State Northern Arizona Albany Mexico State (1-0). In addition, SDSU has maintained the upper hand this year against Mountain West rival UNLV (5-3) and Stanford (2-1). A Look At The Course The host site of the 2015 NCAA Women s Golf St. George Regional is the par-72, 6,255-yard Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club, located some 117 miles northeast of Las Vegas in the heart of Utah s Dixie at the convergence of the Mojave Desert, Colorado Plateau and Great Basin. Weaving through sandstone cliffs, rugged arroyos, rolling dunes, ancient black lava beds and meandering streams, Entrada, which opened in 1996, is a Johnny Miller Signature Design layout, ranked as the No. 1 year-round private golf course in the state of Utah by Golf Digest. San Diego State was a regular fixture in the St. George area from , competing in the BYU Dixie Classic 10 times in 11 years. The Aztecs captured the team title in their last visit to Entrada in 2010, winning by 15 strokes over Louisville. Between 2000 and 2004, SDSU played the tournament when it was held at Sunbrook Golf Club, before the event shifted to Entrada in Backspin: 2014 West Regional San Diego State saw its come to a conclusion after tying for 21st place with Portland State during the final round of the 2014 NCAA West Regional at Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Wash. Battling cool and blustery conditions for the second day in a row, the Aztecs fired a combined 32-over 320 on the final day of competition for a 54-hole total of 91-over 955 on the par-72, 6,252- yard course layout. Emma Henrikson was SDSU s highest finisher for the fifth tournament in a row despite carding an uncharacteristic 83 during the final round. The Aztec sophomore was plagued by seven bogeys and two double-bogeys, sliding 23 places into a tie for 68th with a collective 20-over 236. Conversely, Paige Spiranac was lone SDSU player to make a significant gain on the individual leaderboard, climbing 12 spots into a tie for 75th at 21-over 237 after recording a final-round 78. The Aztec junior drained a pair of birdies at Nos. 8 and 12 to help ease the sting of two double-bogeys and four bogeys before closing with five straight pars. Meanwhile, Sirene Blair wrapped her rookie campaign by firing an 81 over the final 18 holes. The SDSU freshman was even just before the turn as a birdie on the par-4, 320-yard No. 3 offset a bogey at No. 1. However, Blair was unable to recover from a triple-bogey on No. 9, suffering four bogeys and a double-bogey down the stretch to drop six places into a tie with Spiranac in the 75th position. The Aztecs other freshman, Maria Fernanda Villegas, saved her best for last, posting a final-round 79, which put her in a tie for 113th at 32-over 248. Villegas got off to a rough start with seven bogeys, including five straight to begin the day, but regrouped nicely on the back nine, notching five pars to go with birdie on the 13th, her second of the round following a successful make on No. 8. Rounding out the SDSU delegation was junior Kristina Lynn, who shot an 82 to finish one stroke in back of Villegas at 249. Lynn was just 3-over on the front nine, but a trio of double-bogeys after the turn sandbagged her round. In all, individual scores rose for the second day in a row, with only four golfers finishing at or below par during the final round. The 126-player field averaged strokes over the final 18 holes, compared to a scoring average during the second round and a clip in round one.

Joining the Women of Troy and the Huskies were Arizona State, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Iowa State, Texas A&M and Northwestern, along with individuals Clariss Guce of Cal State Northridge and Denver s Tonje Daffinrud. ASU s Noemi Jimenez (-3) captured medalist honors after edging USC s Annie Park and SooBin Kim of Washington, both of whom finished two shots behind at 1-under. Awards Aplenty San Diego State head coach Leslie Spalding was named Mountain West Women s Golf Coach of the Year, while junior Emma Henrikson, sophomore Sirene Blair and freshman Mila Chaves each garnered all-conference accolades on April 30. Henrikson was a first-team all-mw honoree, while Blair and Chaves were second-team selections, giving the Scarlet and Black three all-conference picks for the third consecutive year. Now in her fourth season, Spalding has guided the Aztecs to arguably their finest campaign in program history. SDSU has been ranked as high as 12th nationally in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings and has posted six top-five finishes this year, including the team s first-ever MW Championship on April 22. In addition to their MW title, the Aztecs were also victorious at the season-opening Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., before successfully defending their crown at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown last October. Through nine events, SDSU has compiled a sparkling head-to-head record for a.722 winning percentage. A native of Billings, Mont., Spalding played on the LPGA Tour from , competing in 215 events with seven top-10 finishes. After a four-year stint as head coach at Montana State from , Spalding arrived on Montezuma Mesa where she has led the Aztecs to 18 top-five placements, five event titles and four regional appearances. Individually, Spalding s players have earned 14 all-conference honors and collected seven weekly/monthly awards from the league. Under Spalding s direction, Christine Wong became the first Aztec to garner MW Women s Golfer of the Year accolades in 2012, while Henrikson and Blair each received MW Freshman of the Year distinction in 2013 and 2014, respectively. This season, Henrikson landed a spot on the all-mw first team for the third year in a row after leading the squad with a stroke average to go with three top-five finishes, including a medal-winning performance at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic.. Blair, meanwhile, picked up her second straight all-mw certificate after posting three top-five performances of her own during the campaign, including a runner-up finish at the Ram Classic, followed by a third-place tie at the Branch/McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. For her efforts, Blair was named MW Women s Golfer of the Month for September. She also received the league s weekly award in the spring on the strength of a gritty second-place showing during inclement weather at the Bruin Wave Invitational in March. Not to be outdone, Chaves blossomed into one of the conference s elite golfers during her rookie campaign on The Mesa after leading the Aztecs in three tournaments this spring, including the MW Championship, where she set a league record for lowest opening-round score with a 6-under 66. The native Paraguayan tied for first in regulation at the tournament before falling on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. Rewind: Aztecs Win First-Ever MW Championship San Diego State secured its first-ever conference title after shooting a 1-under-par 287 during the final round the 2015 Mountain West Championship at Mission Hills Country Club on April 22. The Aztecs finished the three-day, 54-hole event with a combined 12-over 876, topping New Mexico (+17) by five strokes on the par-72, 6,291-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course. SDSU boasted three players in the top 15 on the individual leaderboard, led by Mila Chaves, who tied for the top spot in regulation with New Mexico s Manon Mollé at 4-under 210, before falling on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. Chaves entered the day with a three-shot advantage over her Mollé, but was unable to avoid a playoff after carding a 70, while her UNM counterpart posted the field s final-round low of 67. The Aztec freshman carded five birdies against three bogeys, but Mollé closed the gap with a spot-free day, draining five birdies of her own to go with 13 pars. The two golfers returned to the 18th hole for the sudden-death playoff, where Mollé sank a birdie putt to claim medalist honors, while Chaves made par. Despite the outcome, Chaves still established an Aztec record for lowest 54-hole score in a conference tournament, eclipsing Jenna Wilson s total of 215 set in 2004 at Sunriver, Ore. In addition, the native Paraguayan matched SDSU s highest finish at the event after Christine Wong tied for first as well in 2012 at Litchfield Park, Ariz.. Not to be outdone, Emma Henrikson posted her second straight top-five performance at the MW Championship after tying for the fourth position with a collective 1-over 217. Henrikson, who landed in the runner-up spot a year ago, equaled Chaves effort with a 70 of her own, highlighted by three birdies, including the Aztecs lone conversions of the day at Nos. 12 and 18, which ranked among the toughest holes of the final round. With her effort, the SDSU junior finished seven strokes in back of the leaders with San José State s Megan Osland, one shot behind Dana Finkelstein of UNLV (E), who wound up in the third spot. Meanwhile, Paige Spiranac tied for 14th at 9-over 225 after firing a 76 over the final 18 holes. The Aztec senior captain was 4-over at the turn, but played even par on the back nine, offsetting two bogeys with a pair of birdies, including a crucial make on the par-4, 351-yard No. 15, which played as the third-most difficult hole of the final round. Sirene Blair also figured in SDSU s final tally, saving her best round for last with a 71. The Aztec sophomore, who endured a sluggish start with atypical scores of 84 and 81 over her first 36 holes, found her rhythm during the final day, carding two birdies compared to just one bogey. Blair reeled off 12 consecutive pars during one stretch to climb nine places into 34th at 20-over 236. Rounding out the Aztec delegation was freshman Georgia Lacey, who posted a final-round 78 to finish the championship in a tie for 24th at 15-over 231. The Torrey Pines High alumna was plagued by eight bogeys, but managed to finish relatively strong with a pair of birdies on her final three holes in her first conference tournament action Highlights Despite a roster with three freshmen and a schedule replete with high-level competition, San Diego State enjoyed another successful campaign in , posting top-five team finishes in six of nine tournaments, highlighted by the program s first-ever Mountain West championship to go with a pair of team titles during the fall slate. Buoyed by the 1-2 individual finish of Emma Henrikson and Sirene Blair, the Aztecs took home the crown at the season-opening Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., where the Scarlet and Black (+6) topped Mountain West rival UNLV by eight strokes. Blair kept the momentum rolling at the Branch Law Firm/Dick Mc- Guire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., with a third-place indvidual performance, earning MW Women s Golfer of the Month honors in the process. By the end of September, the Aztecs climbed as a high as 12th in the Golfweek national rankings. Henrikson and Mila Chaves logged top-five individual performances at the highly competitive Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, leading SDSU to a respectable sixth-place finish in the team standings. The Aztecs closed out their fall schedule with a co-championship at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in late October. With its result, the Scarlet and Black claimed two regular-season titles in the same year since winning the Lady Aztec Invitational and UC Riverside Invite during the campaign. After placing eighth in its spring opener at the UC Irvine Invitational, SDSU turned in a gritty fourth-place performance at the Bruin Wave Invite in the San Fernando Valley, battling damp and rainy conditions for the first two rounds. Despite the inclement weather, Blair tied for the runner-up position on the individual leaderboard to garner MW Golfer of the Week accolades. In late March, the Aztecs unveiled a new format for the third installment of the SDSU Farms Invitational as 16 teams competed in four rounds of match play over three days. The Scarlet and Black came away with a solid third-place finish after posting a 3-1 record, highlighted by victories over Long Beach State, UNLV and Arizona State. The Aztecs lone blemish at the tournament was a defeat to eventual champion Tennessee, one of eight schools in the stacked field ranked among the Golfstat top 40. Just A Chip Shot Away The top six teams and the three highest finishing individuals not on one of those squads will advance out of the NCAA St. George Regional to the national championships, scheduled for May in Bradenton, Fla. A total of 24 teams and 12 individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play over a three-day period at Concessions Golf Club, with the top 15 squads and nine highest placing individuals advancing to a fourth round of stroke play, which will determine the top eight schools for match play competition, as well as the 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams after 72 holes of play will be placed into a bracket with the No. 1 seed playing the No. 8 seed, the No. 2 seed playing the No. 7 seed, the No. 3 seed playing the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed playing the No. 5 seed in match play. SDSU has previously sent an individual to the NCAA national tournament, but has never qualified as a team.
