2 Red Tail Golf Club Junior Golf Guidelines This guide for the Red Tail Junior Golf Program is developed for the use of parents and junior golfers together to make a few important decisions to enable your junior golfer to get the most out of our Junior Golf Program. We encourage parents to take a short amount of time to read this guide with their junior golfers. Then, spend some time together on the practice range, short range, putting green and on the golf course to access the raw skills, ability levels, course sense, and the desire of your junior. Then compare them with the guidelines set forth in these pages to aid in the placement of your junior into the correct participation group. This decision will affect the type of instruction, form of competition, the level of rules, knowledge expected, as well as, set goals for improvement. Please resist the temptation to make this decision solely on the placement of years past. Should you have any questions about performance in the past, please do not hesitate to ask a group leader or a member of the Red Tail Professional Staff. We believe this decision to be the first of two key elements of a successful junior golf program. The second element is the required participation of parents as walkers within the various participation groups. Parents with golfers in the program will be asked to serve as walkers/rangers (cart riders) on 2 different occasions for each child in the program with a limit of 4 dates maximum. **This does not mean that the parent must be there; however if he or she cannot attend, the parents are responsible for filling those spots and notifying the appropriate group leader of who will be substituting.** Please read the following brief description of EACH group. You will find the following information set forth as a profile of the typical member of that group. Evaluate your junior s skills as impartially as possible and remember that it is preferable to advance your golfer as his or her skills improve. In the event that you feel that your junior is between 2 groups, please consult a member of the professional staff. **PARTICIPATION IN THE JUNIOR GOLF PROGRAM IS LIMITED TO CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN OF FULL-GOLF MEMBERS FIRST AND CHILDREN OF SOCIAL-GOLF MEMBERS CAN BE ADDED IF SPACE IS AVAILABLE**

3 3-Holers The 3-Holer group is our most diverse group as it is where most junior golfers begin. We ask members of this group be at least seven (7) years of age (8 th birthday occurs on or before the final day of the junior golf season). 9:00am Warm-up & Rules 9:30am On the course Play from 150 yards on assigned holes & Red Tee markers on par 3 s. (After 10 swings the ball is placed on the putting green) Average age 8 ½ years Average 3-Hole score from 150 yards 24 The typical 3-Holer makes regular contact with the ball and will hit more shots in the air than grounders. Each week a threesome or foursome will be paired with a group leader and be comprised of different golfers each week. Each group will be accompanied by a walker/scorer. The golfers should be aware of their score but are not yet required to keep their keep it. We will emphasize basic course etiquette: Basic club selection around the green How to carry a golf bag Where to set the bag when your ball is on the green Golf course care Golf carts may be used for group leaders or to transport the golfers from the green to the next marked teeing area (150-yard marker). BEFORE GRADUATING TO THE 5-HOLER GROUP THE GOLFER MUST BE ABLE TO PLAY 3 HOLES IN 40 MINUTES WHILE WALKING IN A FOURSOME AND MAINTAIN A GOOD LEVEL OF CONCENTRATION.

4 5-Holers The 5-Holer group is where the golfer continues to refine ball striking skills and learns more imaginative shots around the green. 9:00am Warm-up & Rules 9:30am On the course Play from 200 yards on assigned holes & Red-Tee markers on par 3 s After 10 swings the ball is to be placed on the putting green & after 2 consecutive shots go in the water, place the ball on the other side of the water and continue to play Average age 10 Average 5-hole score from 200 yards 38 The typical 5-Holer will get the ball airborne the majority of the time and is able to carry the ball 75 yards in the air. Players will begin to get a feeling for distances with various clubs and should have a reasonable idea for what club to use in any situation. There will still be a walker/ranger with each group; however, players are encouraged to keep their own score and be aware of the play of the day. BEFORE GRADUATING TO THE 6-TEE S, THE GOLFER SHOULD HIT THE BALL WELL ENOUGH TO: PLAY AN ENTIRE HOLE KNOW THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF ETIQUETTE COURSE CARE BE ABLE TO FINISH 5 HOLES CARRYING THEIR BAGS, IN A FOURSOME IN LESS THAN 1 HOUR AND 10 MINUTES

5 6-Tees The 6-Tees is an exciting group where emphasis BEGINS to shift from ball striking to completing a hole from start to finish 9:00am Warm-up & Group Review 9:30am On the course Play from the Red Tees on assigned holes If a player cannot make it over the water in 2 shots, they will be able to drop the ball on the other side of the hazard with the appropriate penalty strokes Average age 12 Average 6 hole score 45 They start to gain knowledge of the Rules of Golf as they pertain to the teeing ground, different types of hazards, lost ball, through the green and the putting green. The player is expected to be able to keep and turn in an accurate scorecard. The typical 6-Tee should not have any difficulty carrying the ball to the fairway from the red tees and should be aware of all the correct procedures for rules that would be encountered in the normal play of a hole. BEFORE GRADUATING TO THE 9-HOLERS, THE GOLFER SHOULD HAVE THE ABILITY TO MAINTAIN THE MENTAL LEVEL OF CONCENTRATION NECESSARY TO COMPLETE FOR 9 HOLES AND BE ABLE TO COMPLETE 6 HOLES, CARRYING THEIR BAG IN A FOURSOME IN LESS THAN 1 HOUR AND 15 MINUTES.

6 9-Holers The 9-Hole group will see golfers in many stages of physical development due to the age of most people in the group. 8:00am Warm-up & Group review 8:30am On the course Boys play White Tee s Girls play Red Tee s Average age 15 Average score for 9 holes 60 As physical maturity ensues ball striking and distance should improve drastically as the typical 9-hole male and female begin to manage their game getting their ball to the fairway as well as managing where it should be in the fairway. A sense of course management is beginning to develop while competition and lower scoring are beginning to become very important. Those players who aspire to play competitive golf will probably begin to distinguish themselves. As Play of the Day events become more varied, a more in-depth knowledge of the Rules of Golf will be necessary to resolve those situations which golfers will encounter. BEFORE GRADUATING TO THE 18-HOLERS, THE GOLFER SHOULD BE ABLE TO CONFRONT MOST RULES SITUATIONS WITH ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE, START TO PLAN A WAY TO PLAY THE HOLE AND BE ABLE TO PLAY 9 HOLES CARRYING THEIR BAG IN A FOURSOME IN LESS THAN 2 HOURS.

7 ** IMPORTANT RULES ** REMEMBER TO ALWAYS BRING YOUR GOLF CLUBS HOME. RED TAIL GOLF CLUB IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST CLUBS. Everyone must carry his or her own clubs while playing any hole Play the ball as it lies 3- & 5-Holers Place the ball on the green after 10 strokes. Limit 2 balls into the water, then drop on the side of the water closest to the hole. Count ALL strokes No practice swings on the course No riding on the golf cart unless being transported to or from the course, from green to tee or there is severe weather in the area PARENTS PLEASE REMEMBER TO SCHEDULE YOUR RANGER DAYS!
